How these peelers were reviewed
This is a comparison of external testing, not an in-house test. Food Network reported testing 13 peelers on apples, tomatoes, potatoes, and lemons, including hand-washing and dishwasher checks. Reviewed compared multiple peelers in kitchen tasks, and Prudent Reviews reported testing nine models, including OXO, Kuhn Rikon, Spring Chef, and Linden Sweden. The performance observations below are attributed to those publications rather than presented as our own hands-on results.

Food Network named OXO its best overall, Reviewed named the Kuhn Rikon three-pack its best overall in a 2024 guide, and Prudent Reviews selected the Linden Sweden Jonas as its best overall. Those differences are useful: the right peeler depends on whether you value grip comfort, price, soft-produce performance, or a lightweight all-metal design.
1. OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler: best overall
Best for: A single everyday peeler for potatoes, apples, cucumbers, carrots, and mixed produce.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily Peel Potatoes, Apples, and Tough-Skinned Fruit: The swiveling twin blades with flexible action make this much more than just a potato peeler, it's about to be one of your kitchen essentials. Easily tackle all manner of tough-skinned produce.
- Count on the Soft Oversized Handle: The OXO peeler is engineered to make repetitive movements easier on your hands, especially when your facing large jobs, like pounds of potatoes, and need potato peelers that are up to the task.
- Trust the Non-Slip Grip: Even with wet hands, using it as a fruit peeler, you'll find it easy to maintain a firm grip and work efficiently.
- Carve Out Blemishes: The built-in potato eye remover makes quick work of pesky potato eyes without ruining your produce.
- Store it Easily: Utensil drawers can get chaotic so we built a large hole in the handle of our vegetable peelers so you can hang it where it's convenient.
Food Network selected the OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler as its best overall after testing apples, tomatoes, potatoes, and lemons. Its tester praised the comfortable non-slip handle, sharp performance on both soft and firm foods, and appropriately sized potato-eye remover. The principal drawback was practical rather than functional: the enclosed construction can make crevices harder to reach during hand-washing.
OXO identifies the current model as SKU 20081. Its product information specifies Japanese stainless-steel blades, rust-resistant construction, a handle designed to remain secure with wet hands, left- and right-handed use, an integrated potato eyer, and dishwasher safety. OXO lists the dimensions as 7 by 1 by 1 inches and showed a direct price of $13.99 during the research period; retailer pricing may differ.

For most households, the OXO is the safest choice because it balances control, comfort, versatility, and easy cleanup without requiring special blade care. It is also a better fit than a narrow metal peeler for anyone who peels large batches or finds thin handles uncomfortable.
Verdict: Choose the OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler if you want one forgiving, comfortable tool for routine prep.
2. Dreamfarm Sharple: best self-sharpening design
Best for: Cooks who want a blade cover that stays attached and an integrated sharpening feature.
Food Network named the Dreamfarm Sharple its overall runner-up. In that publication’s test, it performed strongly on apples, tomatoes, and lemons. The ceramic sharpener is built into the retractable safety cover, so opening or closing the cover engages the sharpening mechanism rather than requiring a separate tool.
Dreamfarm says the Sharple automatically hones or sharpens its Japanese stainless-steel blade whenever the safety cover is opened or closed. The manufacturer lists ABS construction, a ceramic-ball sharpener, dishwasher-safe care, a 7.2-inch length, and a weight of 0.09 pounds. Its direct U.S. price was $12.99 at the time of research.
There are two important qualifications. Food Network’s tester found that the cover could trap moisture, so it should be opened, drained, and allowed to dry rather than left damp. The potato-eye scoop also removed more potato than necessary in that test. The sharpening feature is convenient, but it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that the blade will remain optimally sharp forever.
Rank #2
- Smooth, Effortless Peeling - Dual Stainless Steel blades stay ultra sharp and swivel to glide along fruits and vegetables easily. Includes a built-in blemish remover.
- Save Time, Less Waste - Skins peel off quickly like they are melted butter without gouging your fruits or veggies. Takes off just the right amount so you save more precious produce.
- Smooth Glide Technology - Will not clog with peels. Dishwasher Safe.
- Soft Grip Handle For Maximum Comfort - The non-slip rubber handle is comfortable for both right and left-handed use and makes peeling enjoyable. Includes hole for easy hanging.
- Ergonomic Design - The peeler is efficient and lightweight and is easy to use, even for those with arthritis.
Verdict: The Dreamfarm Sharple is a smart choice if integrated maintenance and a captive protective cover matter more to you than a deeply contoured handle.
3. Kuhn Rikon Original Swiss Peeler 3-Pack: best budget pick
Best for: Budget-conscious cooks, backup tools, restaurant-style prep, and households that want several peelers.

Food Network chose the Kuhn Rikon three-pack as its best budget option. Its tester found the Y-shaped design comfortable and efficient on potatoes, apples, and lemons. Tomatoes took more wiggling, and the carbon-steel blade is not dishwasher-safe. The low cost is part of the appeal: replacing a dull or misplaced peeler is less painful when the pack is inexpensive.
Kuhn Rikon says the Original Swiss Peeler was launched in 1986, is made in Switzerland, works for either hand, and includes a potato-eye remover. The manufacturer lists the single peeler at 0.032 pounds and recommends hand-washing and thorough drying because the carbon-steel blade can rust. The company showed a single-peeler price of $5.75 during the research period.
Reviewed separately named the Kuhn Rikon three-pack its best overall in a 2024 guide, describing it as lightweight, sharp, fast, comfortable, and durable based on that reviewer’s restaurant experience. That is an external tester’s assessment, not an in-house finding here.
The care routine is simple but non-negotiable: wash by hand, dry the blade promptly, and do not leave the peeler soaking in a sink or wet inside a dish rack. Carbon steel can offer a very sharp edge, but it is a poor match for anyone who prioritizes dishwasher convenience.

4. Microplane Professional Serrated Peeler: best for tomatoes and soft produce
Best for: Tomatoes, peaches, mangoes, kiwis, peppers, and other slippery or delicate skins.
Rank #3
- Sharp, hardened stainless steel blade easily peels cucumbers, apples and more
- Soft, comfortable, non-slip handle cushions hand during repetitive peeling motion
- Built-in potato eyer
- Removable cover protects blade
Food Network selected the Microplane Professional Serrated Peeler as its best serrated model. The tester reported clean, controlled peeling of apples, tomatoes, and lemons, with a thin layer removed and little pith attached when removing lemon zest. Serrations give the edge more bite than a smooth blade, which can make a noticeable difference on soft skins that deform or slide under pressure.
Microplane describes a curved, stainless-steel serrated double blade that swivels up to 30 degrees. Its soft-touch ergonomic handle is designed for right- or left-handed use, and the manufacturer lists tomatoes, kiwis, mangoes, peppers, peaches, and other soft fruits and vegetables as suitable uses. The listed dimensions are 18.5 by 3 centimeters, and the product is described as dishwasher-friendly.

At 3.74 ounces, it is heavier than the small carbon-steel Y-peelers, and it generally costs more. Microplane’s U.S. store showed the product as sold out during the research period, so check current retailer and manufacturer stock before relying on this particular model.
Verdict: The Microplane Professional Serrated Peeler is the specialist pick for soft produce, especially if ordinary smooth blades skate across tomato skin.
5. Linden Sweden Jonas Original: best lightweight precision peeler
Best for: Cooks who prefer a light, minimalist, all-metal peeler with precise swivel action.
Prudent Reviews reported testing nine peelers and selected the Linden Sweden Jonas Original as its best overall. That review described it as lightweight, sharp, precise, and effective on produce including carrots and butternut squash. The same tester found the thin stainless-steel handle less comfortable during long sessions and preferred the OXO Good Grips Y-Peeler among Y-shaped models.
Linden Sweden describes the Jonas Original as a classic vegetable peeler with a stainless-steel handle and a precision-ground swivel knife. It is intended for either right- or left-handed use. Linden’s company materials say the Jonas was introduced in 1953 and has been sold internationally for decades; those are manufacturer-provided historical claims rather than independent test results.
The Jonas’s light, narrow construction can feel nimble and direct, particularly when making controlled, shallow passes. That same narrowness can concentrate pressure in the hand. If you have hand pain, reduced grip strength, or a large amount of produce to peel, a thicker cushioned handle such as the OXO’s may be more comfortable.
Rank #4
- Smooth, Effortless Peeling - Swiveling twin blades with flexible action easily peel potatoes, apples and other tough-skinned fruits and vegetables
- Soft, oversized handle designed for repetitive strokes - The non-slip rubber handle is comfortable for both right and left-handed use and makes peeling enjoyable. Includes hole for easy hanging
- Built-in potato eye remover. Large hole in handle for easy hanging
- Save Time, Less Waste - Skins peel off quickly like they are melted butter without gouging your fruits or veggies. Takes off just the right amount so you save more precious produce
- Dishwasher Safe - This euro peeler is dishwasher safe, making clean up quick and easy
Exact variants and U.S. availability should be checked before purchase because stock can vary.
Verdict: Choose the Linden Sweden Jonas Original for lightweight precision, not for maximum ergonomic cushioning.
How to choose the right vegetable peeler
Y-peeler or straight swivel peeler?
A Y-peeler places the blade perpendicular to the handle. Many cooks find that geometry gives good leverage and lets the tool feel like an extension of the palm, particularly when peeling toward the body of the vegetable. The Kuhn Rikon is the compact Y-shaped choice in this group.
A straight swivel peeler places the blade in line with the handle and resembles the shape of a conventional utensil. It may feel more familiar, especially if you already use a straight peeler. OXO and Dreamfarm use this general format, while the Linden Jonas uses a narrow, classic swivel construction.
Neither geometry is automatically better. Grip diameter, hand size, wrist movement, blade sharpness, and the direction in which you naturally peel matter more than the label alone.
Smooth or serrated blade?
Choose a smooth blade for general-purpose peeling of potatoes, carrots, apples, cucumbers, and similar firm produce. Choose a serrated blade when tomatoes, peaches, mangoes, kiwis, peppers, or other delicate slippery skins make a smooth blade drag or skip. Food Network reported that serrated peelers outperformed most straight blades on soft tomatoes while remaining useful for other peeling jobs.

Stainless steel or carbon steel?
- Stainless steel: Usually the simpler choice for corrosion resistance and routine kitchen care. OXO, Dreamfarm, and Microplane list dishwasher-safe or dishwasher-friendly construction.
- Carbon steel: Can be very sharp and lightweight, but it needs hand-washing and immediate, thorough drying. The Kuhn Rikon blade can rust if neglected.
Always follow the particular manufacturer’s instructions. “Dishwasher-safe” does not mean a tool cannot be dulled, stained, or knocked around by repeated cycles; it means the manufacturer permits that method of cleaning for the stated construction.

Look for a useful potato-eye remover
A built-in potato-eye scoop is convenient, but its size and shape affect how much flesh it removes. Food Network found the OXO’s potato eyer appropriately sized, while its tester found that the Dreamfarm Sharple’s scoop removed more potato than necessary. If minimizing waste matters, a small paring knife may provide more precise control.
Do not confuse a peeler with a julienne tool
A standard vegetable peeler removes a continuous strip of skin. A julienne peeler has a toothed blade designed to cut thin strips for salads, slaws, garnishes, and decorative vegetable work. It is not a direct substitute for a conventional peeler.
Care and safe-use checklist
- Use a stable cutting surface. Peel over a cutting board or another secure surface rather than chasing a loose vegetable around the counter.
- Keep fingers out of the blade’s path. Hold small produce with a fork or reposition it instead of forcing the peeler toward your fingertips.
- Rinse away residue promptly. Vegetable starch and skins are easier to remove before they dry in the blade housing.
- Follow the care label. OXO, Dreamfarm, and Microplane list dishwasher-compatible care; hand-wash and thoroughly dry the carbon-steel Kuhn Rikon.
- Dry enclosed parts. If using the Sharple, open its cover and let trapped moisture escape before storage.
- Replace rather than force a dull tool. A dull blade requires more pressure and can slip. The low price of the Kuhn Rikon multipack makes replacement especially practical; other models may justify replacement based on condition rather than sharpening.
Which one should you buy?
- For one dependable everyday peeler: OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler.
- For a built-in sharpener and attached cover: Dreamfarm Sharple.
- For the lowest-cost multipack: Kuhn Rikon Original Swiss Peeler 3-Pack.
- For tomatoes and soft fruit: Microplane Professional Serrated Peeler.
- For a minimalist, lightweight feel: Linden Sweden Jonas Original.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Y-shaped vegetable peelers better?
Not for every cook, but many people like Y-peelers because the perpendicular blade provides leverage and can feel like an extension of the palm. A straight swivel peeler may feel more natural if you are accustomed to conventional utensils. Handle comfort and blade sharpness matter more than the shape alone.
Is a serrated peeler better for tomatoes?
Usually, it is the more suitable specialist tool. Serrations can grip delicate, slippery tomato skin instead of sliding over it. Food Network reported that serrated peelers outperformed most straight blades on soft tomatoes. For potatoes, carrots, and other firm produce, a smooth general-purpose blade may be preferable.
Can I put a carbon-steel peeler in the dishwasher?
You should not do so unless the manufacturer specifically permits it. Kuhn Rikon recommends hand-washing and thorough drying because its carbon-steel blade can rust.
What is the difference between a vegetable peeler and a julienne peeler?
A vegetable peeler removes a continuous strip of skin. A julienne peeler uses teeth to cut thin strips for salads, garnishes, and decorative preparation, so it is not a replacement for a standard peeler.
The Bottom Line
The OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler is the strongest all-around recommendation because it combines comfort, control, versatile peeling, and easy care. Choose the Kuhn Rikon for value, the Microplane for soft skins, the Dreamfarm for its integrated sharpener and cover, or the Linden Jonas if a light all-metal design is your priority.
