The best HP printer depends on your workload. The HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e is the strongest choice for a busy home office, the OfficeJet Pro 9125e is the best newer middle-ground model, and the OfficeJet Pro 8135e suits lighter color printing. For document-heavy offices, choose the Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw or the wired, monochrome LaserJet Pro 4001dn instead.
This is a historical 2024 buying guide for U.S. buyers. Prices and availability changed over time, so any 2024 price should be checked against an archived HP or retailer listing rather than a current product page.

“Up to” speeds are not directly comparable: HP uses different modes, including ISO, professional, draft and laser-comparable measurements. For short jobs, first-page-out time and queue behavior may matter more than the headline speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose by workload first
- A few dozen to several hundred pages per month: the OfficeJet Pro 8135e is usually sufficient if you need color, copying and scanning.
- Several hundred to about 1,500 pages per month: the OfficeJet Pro 9125e offers a stronger balance of speed, handling and capacity.
- Up to roughly 2,000 pages per month with a larger paper reserve: the OfficeJet Pro 9025e is the better OfficeJet fit.
- Frequent shared-office documents: consider the color-laser 3301fdw or a higher-capacity business printer.
- Mostly black text at high volume: the LaserJet Pro 4001dn is fast and toner-oriented, but only if wired Ethernet and print-only operation are acceptable.
Do not mistake a printer’s maximum monthly duty cycle for its recommended workload. HP lists the 8135e at up to 20,000 pages maximum but recommends up to 800 pages per month; the 9125e is listed at up to 25,000 maximum and 1,500 recommended; the 9025e is listed at up to 30,000 maximum and 2,000 recommended. These recommended figures are the more useful guide to long-term fit.

1. HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e: best for a busy home office
Why buy it: The 9025e is the most capable of the three OfficeJet models here for a home office that regularly prints color documents, scans paperwork and handles multi-page jobs. It has print, scan, copy and fax functions, four separate ink cartridges, automatic duplex printing, a 35-sheet automatic document feeder, a 250-sheet main tray and a second 250-sheet multipurpose tray.
HP lists up to 24 pages per minute in black and 20 ppm in color in professional mode, a maximum duty cycle of up to 30,000 pages per month and a recommended monthly volume of up to 2,000 pages. See HP’s official specifications.
Running-cost considerations: Four separate cartridges mean you replace colors independently rather than discarding a combined color cartridge when one color runs out. Actual yield depends on coverage and content, so calculate cost from the dated cartridge price and the relevant ISO yield rather than relying on a generic cost-per-page claim.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Main drawbacks: It is an older design than the 9125e, and its value depends heavily on the 2024 price. It is also subject to the ownership questions that apply to HP+ and Instant Ink.
Who should skip it: Buyers printing only occasionally, buyers who need a compact low-cost printer, and offices that print predominantly black text at sustained volume.
Best alternative: Choose the 9125e if you want a newer mid-range OfficeJet, or the 3301fdw if most of your work is recurring office documentation.
2. HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e: best newer mid-range choice
Why buy it: The 9125e sits between the lighter-duty 8135e and the higher-capacity 9025e. It prints, scans, copies and faxes, and HP lists up to 22 ppm black and 18 ppm color in professional mode. Its maximum duty cycle is up to 25,000 pages, with a recommended monthly volume of up to 1,500 pages. It uses HP 936-series cartridges; HP identified EvoMore 936e cartridges as planned for April 2024.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Independent testing from RTINGS describes crisp documents, strong tested yields, USB, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity, and USB flash-drive printing. Its testing also found Wi-Fi materially slower than wired USB, so a networked office should not assume that the advertised print rate will be the same over every connection.
Rank #2
- The OfficeJet Pro 8125e is perfect for home offices printing professional-quality color documents like business documents, reports, presentations and flyers. Print speeds up to 10 ppm color, 20 ppm black
- PERFECTLY FORMATTED PRINTS WITH HP AI – Print web pages and emails with precision—no wasted pages or awkward layouts; HP AI easily removes unwanted content, so your prints are just the way you want
- UPGRADED FEATURES – Fast color printing, scan, copy, auto 2-sided printing, auto document feeder, and a 225-sheet input tra
- WIRELESS PRINTING – Stay connected with our most reliable dual-band Wi-Fi, which automatically detects and resolves connection issues
- 3 MONTHS OF INSTANT INK WITH HP+ ACTIVATION – Subscribe to Instant Ink delivery service to get ink delivered directly to your door before you run out. After 3 months, monthly fee applies unless cancelled.
Best use: Choose it for regular home-office printing and scanning when the 9025e’s higher paper capacity is unnecessary. It is especially suitable for construction-office paperwork such as estimates, invoices, schedules and color forms, provided the monthly workload remains appropriate.
Main drawbacks: It is slower than the 9025e on the cited professional-mode figures and costs more than an entry-level OfficeJet. HP+ and cartridge restrictions also require a deliberate ownership decision.
Best alternative: The 8135e costs less and handles lighter workloads; the 9025e is preferable when paper capacity and higher throughput matter more.
3. HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e: best affordable home-office all-in-one
Why buy it: The 8135e is the sensible choice for households, students and light home offices that need color printing, copying, scanning and faxing without stepping up to a higher-capacity model. HP lists up to 20 ppm black and 10 ppm color under ISO conditions, a 225-sheet input tray and a 35-sheet ADF. It supports automatic two-sided printing, Ethernet, USB, dual-band Wi-Fi, AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct and ChromeOS.
HP recommends up to 800 pages per month, despite listing a maximum duty cycle of up to 20,000 pages. That distinction makes it inappropriate to describe the 8135e as a high-volume office printer. Its most important functional compromise is that it does not automatically scan both sides of a document. It can automatically print two-sided pages, but duplex printing and duplex scanning are separate features.
HP lists standard 923 cartridges at approximately 500 black pages and 400 pages for each color cartridge, while higher-yield 923e EvoMore cartridges are listed at approximately 1,000 black and 800 color pages. RTINGS’ testing produced approximately 410 black and 380 color pages from standard cartridges, showing why published yields and independent results should not be treated as interchangeable.
Main drawbacks: Lower yields, slower color output and no automatic duplex scanning. Users who regularly digitize two-sided contracts, plans or paperwork should step up to the 9125e or 9025e.
Best alternative: Choose the 9125e for regular scanning and higher monthly volume. Choose a laser model if your output is primarily office text and forms.

4. HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw: best color-laser alternative
Why buy it: The 3301fdw belongs in this guide because some offices are better served by color laser technology than by an inkjet. It is aimed at buyers who print recurring color reports, forms, presentations and other business documents and who prefer toner-based operation and consistent text output.
The HP Store lists the 3301fdw among its color laser multifunction printers. However, the available dossier does not establish a dated 2024 set of specifications or price for this model. Before publishing a 2024 price or claiming exact speed, paper capacity, duplex scanning, toner yield or wireless features, verify those details against an archived 2024 HP page or dated retailer listing.
Best use: A small office where several people print mostly business documents in color and a higher initial purchase price is acceptable.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Main drawbacks: Color laser printers generally cost more upfront, and toner plus imaging components affect total ownership cost. Laser output is also less attractive for photo-heavy printing than a suitable inkjet. None of the models in this shortlist should be treated as a dedicated photo printer.
Best alternative: Choose the 9125e or 9025e for lower-volume mixed media and all-in-one inkjet flexibility. Choose the 4001dn when color is unnecessary.
5. HP LaserJet Pro 4001dn: best for black-and-white workgroups
Why buy it: The 4001dn is a fast, print-only monochrome laser designed for a wired office. TechRadar reports a 42-ppm specification on U.S. Letter paper, rapid automatic duplex printing, a 250-sheet main tray, a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and an optional 550-sheet cassette. Setup toner is approximately 2,900 pages, while high-yield toner is rated at up to approximately 9,500 pages.
It offers Ethernet and USB but no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or NFC. That makes it suitable for a wired workgroup sharing a business network, not for a home user expecting wireless setup. HP’s stated maximum monthly duty cycle is up to 80,000 pages, but buyers should still match the printer to the manufacturer’s broader workload guidance and their actual queue demands.

- THE LAST PRINTER YOU'LL EVER NEED – Set it up once and print with confidence; no complicated maintenance, just easy, reliable printing you can count on
- FULLY LOADED WITH SAVINGS – Best for low-cost, high-volume printing—up to 3 years of HP Ink included; get up to 6,000 color or black pages right out of the box
- KEY FEATURES – Print, copy and scan, plus borderless prints, mobile and wireless printing
- MESS-FREE REFILL – Replenish ink with HP's easy-access, mess-free refill system; simply plug the ink bottles into this cartridge-free ink tank and let them drain—no squeezing, no spilling
- BEST PRINT QUALITY, PERIOD – Sharper text, richer colors, only with HP Smart Tank
Main drawbacks: It is print-only, wired-only and unsuitable for color or photo output. TechRadar characterizes its monochrome photo output as grainy and soft. In the U.S. it is designated the 4001dn; the closely related international model is called the 4002dn.
Best alternative: Choose the 3301fdw for color and multifunction needs, or an OfficeJet Pro when wireless connectivity and occasional color media matter more.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ink, toner, Instant Ink and HP+: what ownership really means
Instant Ink is optional
Instant Ink is an optional ink-delivery subscription. A printer advertised with an Instant Ink trial or monthly offer does not automatically require enrollment. HP’s compatibility reference explains which printers support the service.
Recommended Free Tools
HP+ is separate
HP+ is a separate enrollment program. Eligibility does not mean activation is mandatory. HP states that activating HP+ requires an HP account, continuous internet access and exclusive use of Original HP ink for the life of the printer. Those conditions can be unacceptable to buyers with unreliable internet, locked-down business networks or a preference for remanufactured, refillable or third-party cartridges.
Independent testing reports that activating HP+ can prevent later use of third-party cartridges and may require an internet connection even when the printer is connected by USB. Canceling Instant Ink does not automatically remove HP+ restrictions.
Third-party cartridges are not guaranteed
Cartridge compatibility depends on the printer’s dynamic-security system, the cartridge chip and the printer’s firmware state. HP says firmware updates can maintain or strengthen these measures. Do not assume that every third-party cartridge will work, but also do not treat compatibility as a universal guarantee that none will work.
Inkjet versus laser
| Choose inkjet when… | Choose laser when… |
|---|---|
| You need an all-in-one printer, scanner, copier or fax. | Most output consists of recurring office documents. |
| You print color documents, occasional photos or varied media. | You want consistent text and color graphics for multiple users. |
| Your volume is moderate and the lower purchase price matters. | You prefer toner-based operation and less concern about ink drying. |
| You accept HP cartridges or have evaluated Instant Ink and HP+. | You can absorb a higher initial purchase price and toner/imaging costs. |
None of these models is a dedicated photo printer. For occasional color graphics, an OfficeJet is the more flexible choice. For sustained document work, a color or monochrome laser is usually the more sensible technology match.

A practical buying checklist
- Count your real monthly pages. Use the recommended monthly volume, not the maximum duty cycle.
- Separate printing from scanning. Automatic duplex printing does not necessarily mean automatic duplex scanning.
- Decide whether you need an ADF. A flatbed scanner is manageable for single sheets; an ADF is more useful for multi-page paperwork.
- Choose the connection. Ethernet is valuable for a shared office. Wi-Fi is essential if the printer will sit away from the router or serve wireless devices. The 4001dn has no Wi-Fi.
- Calculate consumables. Compare dated cartridge or toner prices with realistic yields. Page coverage, document type and firmware can change the result.
- Make the HP+ decision before setup. If you require offline operation or third-party supplies, do not activate HP+ without understanding its conditions.
- Date the price. A current listing cannot establish what the printer cost in 2024.
Which HP printer should you choose?
- Best for most busy home offices: HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e, if its dated 2024 price was competitive.
- Best newer balanced OfficeJet: HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e.
- Best for low-volume households: HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e.
- Best for frequent color documents: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw, after verifying the relevant 2024 specifications and price.
- Best for black-and-white workgroups: HP LaserJet Pro 4001dn, only when wired Ethernet and print-only operation are acceptable.
- Best for buyers who reject cloud or subscription restrictions: compare the OfficeJet models carefully before activating HP+, and consider whether a non-HP printer better matches your cartridge and offline requirements.
For a typical small construction office, the decision is straightforward: choose the 8135e for light color paperwork, the 9125e or 9025e for regular all-in-one use, the 3301fdw for frequent color documents shared by several people, and the 4001dn for fast black-and-white printing over Ethernet.
