The 5 Best Dyson Vacuums of 2026: Reviews

Dyson’s current vacuum lineup is not a one-model-fits-all proposition. The V16 Piston Animal is the feature-led cordless pick, the Gen5outsize is designed for bigger cleaning runs, the V15s Detect Submarine adds a dedicated hard-floor washing head, the V12 Detect Slim prioritizes low weight, and the Ball Animal 3 gives pet owners a corded upright option. We selected these models by current specifications and intended use—not by our own lab testing—so the right choice depends on flooring, home size, pet hair, and whether you actually need wet cleaning.

There is no single best Dyson for every home. The Dyson V16 Piston Animal is the most feature-led current cordless choice; the Dyson Gen5outsize Absolute is built for bigger cleaning runs; the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine is the one to choose when you genuinely want to wash sealed hard floors; the Dyson V12 Detect Slim makes the most sense when weight and maneuverability matter; and the Dyson Ball Animal 3 remains the corded upright option for pet hair and carpet-heavy spaces.

These recommendations are based on current US product specifications, stated features, and intended use—not in-house lab testing. Dyson bundles, tools, colors, availability, and prices can change by retailer, so verify the exact configuration before buying.

At a glance: which Dyson should you buy?

Best for Model Why it fits Key trade-off
Newest high-spec cordless features Dyson V16 Piston Animal 315 AW stated maximum suction, up to 70 minutes of runtime, adaptive All Floor Cones Sense head, and a debris-compressing bin. A premium, relatively heavy cordless; its stated suction figure is not the same as an independent cleaning test.
Large homes and long sessions Dyson Gen5outsize Absolute 0.5-gallon bin, 12.6-inch cleaner head, two swappable batteries, and up to 140 minutes of stated runtime. At 8.6 lb, it prioritizes capacity over light handling.
Vacuuming plus washing sealed hard floors Dyson V15s Detect Submarine Includes the dedicated Submarine wet roller head for spills, stains, and routine hard-floor washing. Wet-cleaning capability adds weight and cost that dry-vacuum-only homes may not need.
Low weight, stairs, and quick cleanups Dyson V12 Detect Slim 4.8 lb, button power control, laser hard-floor head, and up to 60 minutes of stated runtime. Its 0.1-gallon bin is small for large homes or heavy shedding.
Pet hair and carpet with corded power Dyson Ball Animal 3 A corded upright with a Motorbar cleaner head designed for carpet, hard floors, and hair removal. Less portable and more storage-intensive than a cordless stick.

1. Dyson V16 Piston Animal — Best overall feature-led Dyson

The Dyson V16 Piston Animal is the pick for shoppers who want Dyson’s newest flagship-style cordless vacuum and are willing to pay for its feature set. In the cited US configuration, Dyson lists 315 AW maximum suction, up to 70 minutes of runtime, a 0.35-gallon bin, 7.5 lb weight, 3.5-hour charge time, and filtration rated to capture 99.99% of particles down to 0.1 microns.

Its appeal is not just the headline suction figure. The All Floor Cones Sense cleaner head is intended to adapt across floor types, while the CleanCompaktor bin compresses collected debris to reduce emptying interruptions. That combination makes it a logical fit for mixed flooring, frequent hair pickup, and households that want a single high-spec cordless for regular whole-home cleaning.

#1 Best Overall

Dyson V16 Piston Animal Cordless Vacuum
  • SUPERIOR CLEANING PERFORMANCE: The most powerful anti-tangle cordless vacuum.¹ Dyson’s Hyperdymiumᵀᴹ 900W digital motor delivers 315 Air Watts of continuous, fade-free suction for Dyson's best cleaning performance.²
  • WHOLE HOME CLEANING: Up to 70 minutes of run time.³ Advanced seven-cell lithium battery ensures up to 70 minutes of powerful cleaning on a single charge.
  • HOLDS MORE WITH LESS MESS: CleanCompaktorᵀᴹ bin for more capacity and hygienic emptying. Compressing bin holds 3x more dust and debris.⁶ When you empty, the bin is wiped clean. No dust or tangled hair is left behind.⁷
  • 2 ADVANCED CLEANER HEADS: All Floor Conesᵀᴹ Sense cleaner head illuminates dust you can't normally see and de-tangles all hair lengths⁵. The Fluffy Optic cleaner head reveals invisible dust and is gentle on hard floors.
  • AUTOMATICALLY ADAPTS: All Floor Conesᵀᴹ Sense cleaner head detects the floor type and auto-adjusts brush speed and power⁴ to match. Dynamic Cyclones auto-adjust suction to debris volume to boost power where you need it most.

Why it is not an automatic winner for everyone: 315 AW is Dyson’s stated inlet-test result, not an independent test performed for this article. Independent review context from WIRED found the V16 powerful, but did not find its higher stated suction translated into a clear real-world advantage over every other Dyson model. Treat it as the most feature-rich current choice, not as proof that it will clean every home better than every alternative.

Also verify the exact product name before checkout. The dry-vacuum V16 Piston Animal is distinct from the V16 Piston Animal Submarine, a related wet-and-dry variant that includes a wet roller head. Do not assume a retailer bundle contains that head unless it says so.

Choose it if

  • You want the newest feature-led cordless Dyson for mixed floors and hair.
  • You value fewer bin-emptying pauses more than the lowest possible vacuum weight.
  • You want the highest stated maximum-suction figure in this group.

Skip it if

  • Your main priority is the longest possible run time and largest bin; the Gen5outsize is better aligned with that job.
  • You need wet hard-floor washing; select an exact Submarine-equipped model instead.
  • You prefer the least tiring vacuum for stairs and short daily cleans; the V12 is much lighter.

2. Dyson Gen5outsize Absolute — Best Dyson for large homes

The Dyson Gen5outsize Absolute is the practical choice when square footage, pet hair, and cleanup capacity matter more than a slim profile. Dyson lists a 0.5-gallon bin and a 12.6-inch-wide cleaner head, both meaningful advantages when covering broad floor areas. It also has two swappable batteries with a quoted maximum runtime of up to 140 minutes, and Dyson lists 250 AW maximum suction.

Those numbers point to its real value: less stopping. A larger bin means fewer trips to the trash; a wider head can reduce passes across open rooms; and the second battery gives a longer potential cleaning window. For a large home, multi-pet household, or frequent deep cleaner, that is usually more useful than chasing the lightest body.

The compromise is clear. At 8.6 lb, this is one of the heaviest cordless options here. It can be a strong floor-cleaning tool, but it is less appealing for one-handed overhead work, repeated stair cleaning, or anyone who finds a heavier stick vacuum uncomfortable. The “up to 140 minutes” figure also depends on its two-battery setup and operating conditions; runtime varies by mode, attachment, and floor type.

Dyson V16 Piston Animal Submarine™ Cordless Wet and Dry Vacuum
  • 3 ADVANCED CLEANER HEADS: All Floor Conesᵀᴹ Sense illuminates dust and de-tangles long hair⁵. Fluffy Optic reveals invisible dust and is gentle on hard floors. Submarineᵀᴹ 2.0 washes hard floors and tackles dried-on dirt.
  • POWERFUL WET CLEANING: Wash hard floors with the Submarineᵀᴹ 2.0 cleaner head. Tackle dried on dirt and spills with a combination of hydration, absorption and extraction. Boost mode offers targeted and precise spot cleaning.

Choose it if

  • You have more floor area than a typical quick-clean cordless can comfortably cover.
  • You want a large bin, wide cleaner head, and two-battery setup.
  • You have pets or carpeted rooms that create enough debris to make frequent emptying annoying.

Skip it if

  • Low weight is non-negotiable.
  • You live in a small space where the larger bin and head will not earn their storage footprint.
  • You want a dedicated wet-floor washing head.

The simplest V12-versus-Gen5outsize decision: choose the V12 Detect Slim when low weight matters more than bin capacity and wide-area coverage; choose the Gen5outsize when the opposite is true.

3. Dyson V15s Detect Submarine — Best Dyson for vacuuming and washing hard floors

The Dyson V15s Detect Submarine is the right pick only when its differentiating feature solves a real cleaning need: it can vacuum dry debris and, with its dedicated Submarine wet roller head, wash sealed hard floors. Dyson describes the wet head as engineered to address spills and stains on hard flooring. The cited Absolute configuration lists up to 60 minutes of runtime and whole-machine HEPA filtration.

For a home with sealed wood, tile, vinyl, laminate, or similar hard floors, a vacuum that can handle crumbs and hair before switching to a purpose-built wet roller can simplify routine cleanup. It is especially compelling when kitchen and entryway messes are a regular part of the workload.

Be precise about what this model does. It washes hard floors with a dedicated wet roller head. That is not the same thing as steam cleaning, and no sanitizing claim should be inferred from the wet-cleaning feature. It also is not a reason to buy a wet-and-dry machine if nearly all of your cleaning is dry vacuuming. At 9.0 lb in the cited comparison, it is a substantial machine to lift and maneuver.

Among the compared models, wet cleaning is specific to the V15s Detect Submarine. The V16 Piston Animal, Gen5outsize, V12 Detect Slim, and Ball Animal 3 should not be assumed to include wet cleaning based solely on their family names.

Dyson Floor Dok™ Multi V16 Piston Animal Cordless vacuums
  • Tidy storage for your cordless Dyson vacuum and up to five tools. No drilling required.
  • Only compatible with Dyson V16 Piston Animal cordless vacuums.
  • The Floor Dok Multi is engineered to charge your Dyson.
  • Store and charge anywhere, with no need to fix to the wall.
  • Includes accessory holders for up to five attachments.

Choose it if

  • You have sealed hard floors and expect to use a wet roller regularly.
  • You prefer one cordless platform for dry debris, hair detangling, and routine wet cleanup.
  • You can accept more weight in exchange for the washing capability.

Skip it if

  • You only need dry vacuuming.
  • Your home is mostly carpet, where a wet hard-floor head is unlikely to justify the premium.
  • You need the longest stated runtime and biggest debris bin.

4. Dyson V12 Detect Slim — Best lightweight Dyson

The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is the ergonomics-first choice. Dyson calls it its lightest intelligent cordless vacuum; the cited US model weighs 4.8 lb and has a stated maximum runtime of up to 60 minutes. It uses a button rather than a hold-down trigger for power, a welcome detail for users who dislike maintaining grip pressure through a cleaning session.

The V12 also includes a Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head designed to reveal fine dust on hard floors, particle sensing, and an LCD display. Together, those features make it well suited to apartments, stairs, daily touch-ups, and homes where a vacuum is more likely to be used often if it is easy to pick up and move.

Its limitation is capacity. The comparison information lists a 0.1-gallon bin—one-fifth the size of the Gen5outsize’s 0.5-gallon bin. That does not make the V12 a poor cleaner; it means long sessions, pet hair, or a large home can involve more frequent emptying. The same “up to” qualification applies to its 60-minute runtime: actual results vary with mode, floor type, and attachment.

Choose it if

  • Stairs, frequent quick cleanups, and maneuverability define your cleaning routine.
  • You want a lighter cordless and button-based power control.
  • You live in a smaller home or accept more frequent bin emptying.

Skip it if

  • You need a large-capacity vacuum for long whole-house sessions.
  • You want wet hard-floor washing.
  • You prefer the continuous power and format of a corded upright.

5. Dyson Ball Animal 3 — Best corded Dyson for pets and carpets

The Dyson Ball Animal 3 earns a place here because it gives buyers a genuinely different option: a corded upright rather than another cordless stick with slightly different specifications. Dyson says its Motorbar cleaner head deep-cleans carpets, seals suction on hard floors, and removes tangled long and pet hair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For carpet-heavy homes and persistent pet hair, a corded upright can be the sensible format. There is no battery to charge or maximum battery runtime to plan around, and the upright form is familiar to many buyers who prioritize long cleaning sessions and carpet work over portable convenience.

Dyson Extended Reach kit V16 Piston Animal Cordless vacuums
  • Engineered to reach underneath low furniture and clean into tight gaps and hard-to-reach places.
  • Only compatible with Dyson V16 Piston Animal cordless vacuums.
  • Designed to help you reach up high, down low and into narrow and awkward spaces. For convenient whole-home cleaning.
  • Includes Awkward gap tool 2.0, Flexi hose tool and Low-reach adaptor.

The trade-off is handling. It will not feel like a 4.8-lb V12 on stairs, in a car, or for a quick pass under furniture. Expect a different storage footprint and cleaning experience than with a cordless stick. Dyson’s US warranty terms also distinguish the product categories: corded vacuums carry a five-year limited warranty, while cordless vacuums carry a two-year limited warranty, subject to the applicable terms and normal domestic use.

Choose it if

  • You have pets, substantial carpet, or both.
  • You prefer corded operation and do not need cordless portability.
  • You want an upright designed around hair pickup and carpet cleaning.

Skip it if

  • Your priority is lightweight stairs, quick spot cleaning, or easy car cleaning.
  • You want a wet roller for sealed hard floors.
  • Storage space is especially tight.

How to choose between these five

Start with the cleaning job, not the model number. A newer, more expensive Dyson is not automatically the better purchase if its main advantage does not match your floors or routine.

  1. Decide whether you need wet cleaning. If you want to wash sealed hard floors with the vacuum platform, the V15s Detect Submarine is the relevant model in this comparison. If you do not expect to use a wet roller, avoid paying for that capability by default.
  2. Match capacity to the home. The Gen5outsize’s 0.5-gallon bin and 12.6-inch head are most useful in large or debris-heavy homes. The V12’s 0.1-gallon bin is more sensible when ease of handling matters more than uninterrupted capacity.
  3. Be honest about weight. The V12 is 4.8 lb, the V16 is 7.5 lb, the Gen5outsize is 8.6 lb, and the cited V15s comparison lists 9.0 lb. If stairs or joint comfort are part of the decision, this difference is not minor.
  4. Interpret runtime as a ceiling, not a promise. The quoted 70, 140, and 60-minute figures are all “up to” values. Use them to compare the models’ general intent, then expect mode, attachment, floor surface, and battery configuration to change the result.
  5. Choose the format you will actually use. Cordless sticks excel at quick access and flexible cleaning. A corded upright such as the Ball Animal 3 may be the better fit when carpet and pet hair matter more than unplugged portability.
  6. Confirm the exact bundle. Before purchasing, check the SKU, included cleaner heads and tools, battery count, color, warranty presentation, seller, and return policy. This is especially important for similarly named Submarine and non-Submarine models.

Specification notes worth understanding

Air watts do not settle the whole buying decision

The V16’s 315 AW and the Gen5outsize’s 250 AW are manufacturer-stated maximum suction figures. They can help describe a model’s position in Dyson’s lineup, but they are not a universal score for pickup on every floor. Brush design, floor type, debris type, operating mode, airflow path, and real-world technique all matter. That is why the V16 is recommended for its current feature package rather than declared the objectively best cleaner for every household.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Filtration claims are model-specific

Do not transfer a filtration claim from one Dyson to another. The cited V16 Piston Animal configuration is rated for 99.99% filtration down to 0.1 microns, while the cited V15s Detect Submarine Absolute configuration lists whole-machine HEPA filtration. These are manufacturer product specifications, not medical claims, and exact wording can vary by model and configuration.

“Submarine” is a feature and bundle question

Do not buy based on a family name alone. A Submarine model or bundle includes a wet-cleaning component; a similarly named dry-vacuum model may not. Read the included-items list, especially when comparing retailer pages or marketplace listings.

Large home with pets and long cleaning sessions Gen5outsize Absolute Larger bin, wider head, and two-battery maximum-runtime proposition.
Sealed hard floors with routine spills and sticky messes V15s Detect Submarine The dedicated wet roller is the differentiator.

Carpet-forward home with shedding pets; cord is acceptable Ball Animal 3 Corded upright format and Motorbar hair-removal focus.

Before you buy

  • Verify that the listing is for the exact model named here, not a similar variant.
  • Read the included-tools list; cleaner heads and accessory bundles vary.
  • For a V15s or V16 Submarine variant, verify that the wet roller head is explicitly included.
  • Confirm whether a second battery is included when evaluating a Gen5outsize runtime claim.
  • Check current warranty terms and retailer return policies rather than relying on a summary.
  • Do not base the decision on a temporary sale price, marketplace rating, or stock status that may have changed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy the V16 Piston Animal or the V15s Detect Submarine?

Choose the V16 Piston Animal if you want Dyson’s newest feature-led dry cordless model. Choose a V15s Detect Submarine when you specifically need a dedicated wet roller head to wash sealed hard floors. Confirm the exact bundle: similarly named models do not necessarily include the same heads.

Does the V16’s 315 AW mean it cleans better than every other Dyson?

Not necessarily. Dyson lists the V16 at 315 AW maximum suction, but that is a manufacturer inlet-test specification rather than a universal real-world cleaning score. Independent WIRED review context found the V16 powerful without establishing a clear advantage over every other Dyson. Pick according to floor type, capacity, weight, and wet-cleaning needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Dyson is best for a large house?

The Gen5outsize Absolute is the better match when you need a large bin, wide cleaner head, and the longest quoted runtime. Its 0.5-gallon bin and two-battery setup favor large cleaning jobs; its 8.6-lb weight is the cost of that capacity.

Does the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine steam-clean floors?

No. The V15s Detect Submarine washes sealed hard floors with a dedicated wet roller head. It should not be described as a steam cleaner or as providing sanitization unless the exact current product documentation supports those claims.

The Bottom Line

Buy the Dyson V16 Piston Animal for the newest high-spec cordless package, the Gen5outsize Absolute for larger homes and longer runs, the V15s Detect Submarine when wet hard-floor washing is a real need, the V12 Detect Slim when low weight is decisive, and the Ball Animal 3 for a corded pet-and-carpet upright. Confirm the precise SKU and included heads before you order.
