Budieggs Wool dryer balls are the best overall choice in this roundup. In Reviewed’s laboratory testing, the six-pack produced the strongest drying result among the products tested while leaving laundry soft. It did not make every item fully dry in the standardized cycle, however: some T-shirts and the center of a comforter still needed more time.

Whitmor is the better choice if you want plastic rather than wool, Smart Sheep is the premium-wool pick, Grove Co. stands out for observed durability, and Gleener Dryer Dots are a value-oriented alternative. The rankings below distinguish independent test observations from claims made by the manufacturers.

Quick verdict

Pick Best for Material Pack information Evidence basis
Budieggs Wool Dryer Balls Best overall 100% New Zealand wool Six-pack Strongest drying result in Reviewed’s lab tests; laundry felt soft
Whitmor Dryer Balls Best plastic dryer balls Thermoplastic Varies by listing Reviewed found them durable and similar to wool options for dampness, but less softening
Smart Sheep Wool Dryer Balls Best premium wool Hand-felted 100% New Zealand wool Check the current listing Reviewed praised the wool’s softness; Smart Sheep reports fair-trade production in Nepal
Grove Co. Wool Dryer Balls Best for durability Wool Check the current listing Good Housekeeping saw no visible wear after more than 200 loads
Gleener Dryer Dots Best value and longevity alternative Wool dryer balls Six-pack recommended for value Good Housekeeping tested them for several months; some yellowing was observed

Wool dryer balls are usually the most appealing option for shoppers who want reusable laundry aids without the fragrance and softening chemicals found in many conventional dryer-sheet products. That does not mean every wool product is free of every chemical or suitable for every fabric, so check the product label.

How dryer balls work—and what they cannot do

Dryer balls tumble among wet garments, helping separate fabric layers so warm air can circulate more freely. Wool balls can also absorb some moisture and may make laundry feel softer. Plastic and rubber versions provide the tumbling and separation effect without using wool.

They are not a replacement for a correctly sized load, an appropriate drying cycle, or enough drying time. In Reviewed’s controlled testing, the products were used with towels, T-shirts, and a queen-size comforter. Loads were weighed before and after washing, dried for 40 minutes on a timed cycle, and weighed again. The testers used the recommended number of balls for each product and also compared the results with a tennis ball. The products were additionally used in a home GE dryer.

#1 Best Overall
Handy Laundry Wool Dryer Balls 6-Pack, Reusable Natural Fabric Softener
  • SUPERIOR QUALITY WOOL: 100% New Zealand premium wool with no synthetic fillers, rolled into tight, extra-large balls and felted for a natural, long lasting product
  • REUSABLE FABRIC SOFTENER: Replace chemically infused dryer sheets and liquid fabric softeners with a natural alternative that will last more than a thousand dryer loads
  • SPEED UP DRYING TIME: As the dryer balls tumble around in the dryer, they lift and separate laundry allowing the hot air to circulate better and dry faster
  • SAVE ENERGY COSTS: Reduce appliance usage and electricity bills by shortening drying time up to 25%
  • REDUCE STATIC CLING: Toss them into the dryer and your clothing will dry faster, fluffier and softer, with fewer wrinkles and less static cling

Every product left at least some T-shirts slightly damp after that standardized cycle, and most comforters remained damp in the middle. A bulky load may need a longer cycle, more separation, or a lower load size regardless of which dryer balls you use.

Do not treat dryer balls as guaranteed energy savers or assume they reduce drying time by a fixed percentage. Results depend on fabric, load size, moisture left by the washer, dryer condition, humidity, and cycle settings.

1. Budieggs Wool Dryer Balls: best overall

Budieggs wool dryer balls are the strongest all-around choice in the available testing. Reviewed selected the six-pack as its overall winner after repeated laboratory loads. The balls produced the strongest drying result among the tested products, and the testers found the laundry soft afterward.

The product is described as 100% New Zealand wool. That makes it a sensible fit for shoppers who want a natural-feeling, reusable alternative to dryer sheets and who value softness as much as moisture movement.

Why it stands out

  • Best drying performance among the products in Reviewed’s comparison.
  • Left laundry feeling soft in the test.
  • A six-pack is suitable for the larger loads for which multiple balls are commonly recommended.
  • Wool avoids the fragrance added to many dryer-sheet products.

Limitations

Reviewed’s test did not show that Budieggs eliminates drying time. Some T-shirts and the middle of a comforter remained damp after the 40-minute cycle. The brand’s statement that the balls are intended to last 1,000 or more loads is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified lifetime result.

Best for: Most households that want a wool dryer ball with the strongest available comparative drying evidence.

2. Whitmor Dryer Balls: best plastic dryer balls

Whitmor plastic dryer balls are the clearest choice for people who prefer not to use wool. Reviewed identified them as thermoplastic and found them more durable than the wool options in its testing.

The trade-off is softness. Whitmor performed similarly to the wool products for dampness in Reviewed’s comparison, but it did not soften laundry as effectively. Choose it for material preference, toughness, or a non-wool design—not because plastic balls are proven to deliver softer clothing.

Why it stands out

  • Non-wool construction.
  • More durable than the wool options in Reviewed’s testing.
  • Comparable dampness results in that test.
  • A reasonable option for shoppers who want to avoid wool fibers.

Limitations

Plastic dryer balls may be noisier than wool, particularly in an empty or lightly loaded dryer, and the testers found less softening. The exact pack size and current configuration can vary by retailer listing, so verify the product identity before buying.

Rank #2
Budieggs Wool Dryer Balls XL 6-Pack, 100% New Zealand Wool Handmade
  • 🌿 NATURAL & CHEMICAL-FREE — Made from 100% premium New Zealand wool with no fillers, no synthetics, and no chemical additives required. The perfect natural alternative to dryer sheets and liquid fabric softeners — gentle enough for every member in your family, the elderly and anyone need natural products for laundry.
  • 👕 SOFTER, FLUFFIER FABRICS NATURALLY | Our XL wool dryer balls bounce gently in dryer, separating your clothes and circulating hot air evenly to reduce wrinkles, tangling, twisting, static cling, lint and pet hair — leaving fabrics soft, flat, and fluffy every time without any chemicals.
  • ⚡ SAVE TIME & MONEY ON EVERY LOAD | Shorten drying time by 10–30%, eliminating the need to keep buying dryer sheets or liquid softener. Each extra large laundry ball set lasts 1,000+ loads (2–3 years), making this one of the most cost-effective and natural laundry solutions available.
  • 🌸 ADD YOUR FAVORITE FRAGRANCE | Simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oil — lavender, lemon, eucalyptus, and more — directly onto the balls before drying. Enjoy naturally fresh, beautifully scented laundry every single time.
  • 🎁 A THOUGHTFUL GIFT FOR EVERY OCCASION | Packaged in a beautiful reusable cotton gift bag, Budieggs dryer balls make a perfect gift for Mother’s Day, weddings, bridal showers, Christmas, housewarmings, college graduations, and more.

Best for: Shoppers prioritizing plastic construction and durability over the softest laundry.

3. Smart Sheep Wool Dryer Balls: best premium wool

Smart Sheep wool dryer balls are the premium-wool pick. Reviewed rated the wool especially soft and luxurious. Smart Sheep says its balls are hand-felted from 100% New Zealand wool and made through fair-trade production in Nepal, with inspection and packaging in the United States.

The softness is the main reason to pay attention to this set. It is a good match for readers who want a well-finished wool product and care about the brand’s stated production practices.

Why it stands out

  • Reviewed found the wool particularly soft.
  • Hand-felted 100% New Zealand wool, according to Smart Sheep.
  • Smart Sheep describes its Nepal production as fair-trade.
  • Appropriate for shoppers seeking a premium-feeling wool option.

Limitations

Reviewed observed some static and incomplete drying with heavy or bulky loads. Smart Sheep’s claims about durability, including statements that the balls can last more than 1,000 loads, should be treated as manufacturer claims rather than a guaranteed result.

Best for: Buyers who value soft wool and the brand’s stated sourcing and production information.

4. Grove Co. Wool Dryer Balls: best for durability

Grove Co. is the durability-focused choice because Good Housekeeping’s home testers reported no visible wear after more than 200 loads. The testers used the balls in weekly household laundry, making this a longer-duration observation than a single cycle comparison.

The product is made in Nepal. Grove states durability of up to 1,000 loads, but that number is a manufacturer estimate or claim—not an independently verified lifetime guarantee. “No visible wear after more than 200 loads” is the more precise reported observation.

Why it stands out

  • No visible wear after more than 200 loads in Good Housekeeping’s home testing.
  • A practical choice for frequent laundry users.
  • Wool construction provides the separating action and softening associated with wool dryer balls.

Limitations

The 1,000-load figure should not be used as a promise that every set will last that long. Actual life depends on the dryer, load size, heat, laundering habits, and the condition of the felted wool.

Rank #3

5. Gleener Dryer Dots: best value and longevity alternative

Good Housekeeping tested Gleener Dryer Dots for several months in both small and large loads and described the set as cost-effective when purchased in a six-pack. That makes them worth considering when the replacement cost per ball matters more than choosing the overall winner.

The testers found the balls generally durable, although some yellowed sooner than expected. Gleener claims up to 3,000 loads. That is substantially longer than the durability claims commonly made for comparable products, but it remains a manufacturer claim rather than an independently demonstrated result.

Why it stands out

  • Good Housekeeping found the six-pack cost-effective.
  • Tested for several months across small and large loads.
  • Generally durable in the home test.

Limitations

Some balls yellowed during testing. Yellowing does not necessarily mean the balls have stopped working, but it may matter if appearance is important. Do not buy solely on the 3,000-load figure without recognizing that it comes from the manufacturer.

Best for: Shoppers looking for a relatively economical multi-ball set and willing to accept possible discoloration.

How the testing evidence should be interpreted

This article does not claim that the publisher independently tested these products. The comparative laboratory findings come from Reviewed, while the longer home-use observations come from Good Housekeeping. Brand statements are identified separately.

Reviewed’s laboratory comparison

Reviewed repeatedly laundered towels, T-shirts, and a queen-size comforter, weighed loads before and after washing, used a 40-minute timed drying cycle, and measured the post-dry weight. The team followed each product’s recommended number of balls and used a tennis ball as a comparison condition. It also used the products in a home GE dryer.

This approach gives the results more structure than an informal “I used these once” review, but it still represents particular loads, a particular dryer, and a particular cycle. A 40-minute result should not be converted into a universal time-saving promise.

Rank #4
Handy Laundry Wool Dryer Balls 4-Pack, Reusable Natural Fabric Softener
  • SUPERIOR QUALITY WOOL – 100% New Zealand premium wool with no synthetic fillers, rolled into tight, extra-large balls and felted for a natural, long lasting product.
  • REUSABLE FABRIC SOFTENER – Replace chemically infused dryer sheets and liquid fabric softeners with an eco-friendly and natural alternative that will last more than a thousand dryer loads.
  • SPEED UP DRYING TIME – As the dryer balls tumble around in the dryer, they lift and separate laundry allowing the hot air to circulate better and dry faster.
  • SAVE ENERGY COSTS – Reduce appliance usage and electricity bills by shortening drying time up to 25%
  • REDUCE STATIC CLING – Toss them into the dryer and your clothing will dry faster, fluffier and softer, with fewer wrinkles and less static cling.

Good Housekeeping’s home testing

Good Housekeeping tested Grove Co. and Gleener in regular household laundry over extended periods. Its more-than-200-load observation for Grove Co. and several-month assessment of Gleener are useful for identifying visible wear and real-world convenience, but they are not the same as a controlled head-to-head laboratory test.

How to choose dryer balls

Choose wool if softness and low fragrance matter

Wool is the dominant material in this list. It can absorb some moisture and may soften fabric as it tumbles. It is a good starting point for people replacing fragranced dryer sheets, provided everyone in the household tolerates the material and the product’s label meets your requirements.

Choose plastic if you want a non-wool, durable option

Plastic balls are preferable when you want to avoid wool or prioritize a harder-wearing design. The trade-off is that they may not provide the same softening effect, and they can make more noise.

Match the number of balls to the load

Larger loads generally use more balls, but there is no single correct number for every dryer ball, dryer, or load. Follow the product instructions and your dryer manual. Overloading the drum can restrict airflow and undermine the purpose of the balls.

Think about bulky bedding separately

Comforters, towels, and other dense items can hold moisture in their centers. Dryer balls may help separate the load, but they cannot guarantee that the middle of a comforter will dry on a standard timed cycle. Use the appropriate bulky-items setting when available, avoid packing the drum too tightly, and check the center before storing the item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control static through cycle settings

Static depends on over-drying, fabric type, humidity, and the selected cycle. Reviewed advised reducing drying time by about 10 minutes to help prevent static in its testing. Treat that as test-specific guidance, not a universal setting: remove laundry promptly and adjust the cycle for the actual fabrics in the load.

Check care instructions

Wool balls may be refreshed or washed according to the manufacturer’s instructions, but care directions differ by brand. Do not assume that a cleaning method suitable for one felted-wool product applies to another. Let any washed balls dry completely before returning them to the dryer.

What about sustainability, allergies, and babies?

Wool dryer balls can reduce reliance on disposable dryer sheets, but sustainability depends on the product’s materials, packaging, manufacturing, shipping, and eventual disposal. Friendsheep is a noteworthy alternative for readers focused on those details: its official product information describes handmade 100% organic New Zealand wool, plastic-free construction, compostability at end of life, and sets that include five extra-large balls. It is a sustainability-oriented alternative, not one of the independently tested winners in this ranking.

Avoid broad claims that dryer balls are hypoallergenic, universally safe for babies, or chemical-free in every sense. Wool can irritate or trigger sensitivities for some people, and “natural” does not automatically mean allergen-free. Check the exact product materials and consult a clinician for a medically significant allergy or skin condition.

Are tennis balls a good substitute?

Reviewed included a tennis ball as a comparison condition, but tennis balls are not a direct substitute for every household. They may introduce odor, noise, dye or material concerns, and garment-care questions. Dryer balls purpose-built from wool or thermoplastic materials are easier to evaluate against their stated use and care instructions.

Bottom line by household

  • Want the best tested all-rounder? Choose Budieggs.
  • Want to avoid wool? Choose Whitmor.
  • Want especially soft premium wool? Choose Smart Sheep.
  • Run frequent loads and care most about visible wear? Choose Grove Co.
  • Want a value-oriented six-pack? Consider Gleener Dryer Dots.

Whichever set you choose, use it as an airflow aid—not as a guarantee of shorter cycles, lower utility bills, or completely dry bulky laundry. Correct load size and an appropriate cycle remain more important than the brand of ball.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do dryer balls really work?

They can help separate laundry and improve airflow, and wool can absorb some moisture and soften fabric. In Reviewed’s laboratory testing, results varied by product, and every product still left some T-shirts slightly damp after a 40-minute timed cycle. Most comforters also remained damp in the middle, so dryer balls do not guarantee a shorter or complete drying cycle.

How many dryer balls should I use?

Use the number recommended by the product manufacturer and your dryer manual. Larger loads generally use more balls, but there is no universal quantity because ball size, load composition, and dryer capacity differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are wool or plastic dryer balls better?

Wool is the better choice if you want softening and a natural-feeling material. Plastic is the better choice if you want to avoid wool or prioritize durability. Reviewed found Whitmor’s thermoplastic balls more durable than the wool options, but less effective at softening laundry.

Can dryer balls prevent static?

Not reliably. Static is affected by over-drying, fabric type, humidity, and cycle settings. Reviewed suggested reducing drying time by about 10 minutes in its testing, but that is not a universal rule for every dryer or load.

Will dryer balls dry a comforter completely?

Not necessarily. Reviewed found that most comforters remained damp in the center after the standardized cycle. Use an appropriate bulky-items cycle, avoid overloading the drum, and check the center before putting the comforter away.

How long do dryer balls last?

Reported and claimed lifespans vary. Good Housekeeping saw no visible wear on Grove Co. after more than 200 loads. Grove says up to 1,000 loads, Budieggs says 1,000 or more, Smart Sheep says more than 1,000, and Gleener claims up to 3,000. The brand figures are manufacturer claims, not independently verified guarantees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Budieggs is the best overall dryer ball in the available testing, but no dryer ball eliminates the need for the right load size and enough drying time. Choose Whitmor for plastic durability, Smart Sheep for premium wool, Grove Co. for observed long-term wear resistance, or Gleener for a value-focused alternative.
