There is no single best dish rack for every kitchen. The right choice depends on whether you need a large family-size rack, a flexible drain path, fold-flat storage, stemware support, or the lowest price. For most countertop layouts, the Joseph Joseph Extend Stainless-Steel Expandable Dish Drainer is the strongest all-around choice because it adjusts to changing loads and can direct water toward the sink. The KitchenAid Full-Size Dish-Drying Rack is better for large family loads, while the OXO Good Grips Aluminum Fold Flat Dish Rack is the best option when the rack must disappear after use.
This is a research-based comparison, not a claim that our team performed hands-on testing. The rankings draw on recent product specifications and published evaluations from Bon Appétit, Food Network, and Bob Vila, with older or mixed-method coverage used only as supporting evidence. If the title “tested” is essential to your buying decision, look for a version of this guide updated after the publication has completed its own documented test.

The most useful recent evidence is Bon Appétit’s July 2026 roundup, which reports testing 18 racks across countertop, folding, expandable, over-the-sink, drying-pad, and other designs. Its reported load included four dinner plates, four glasses, four sets of flatware, a five-quart Dutch oven, and a 10-inch frying pan. The evaluation considered drainage, capacity, stability, cleanability, construction, orientation, storage, and appearance.
#1 Best Overall
- COMPACT VOLUME: Kitsure dish rack is suitable for kitchens with limited space. The bottom layer measures only 12''W x 15.5''L and the overall height is 5". The rack is capable of holding 10 plates and other bowls and glasses. With a Kitsure dish rack, you can perfectly save your countertop space.
- PREMIUM MATERIAL: Kitsure Kitchen dish drying rack has a plastic drainboard and premium rust-proof metal which can effectively prevent rust and deformation. And you can clean the rack easily by rinsing it under a running tap. Tips: Water may not drain smoothly if the sink edge is above the counter.
- EASY INSTALL & CLEAN: Kitsure dish drainer is easy to install with the attached installation manual. In addition, with the waterproof coating, the rack is also easy to clean. All you need to do is wipe the rack with a damp cloth or rinse it under a running tap after use. The water pipe can also be disassembled for cleaning.
- EASY TO USE: Kitsure drying rack for kitchen consists of a cutlery holder, a dish rack, and a drainboard set. With such a simple structure, it is easy to install as no tool is needed in the process. the dish rack stays firmly where it is.
- DETACHABLE CUTLERY HOLDER: The cutlery holder of this dish drying rack is divided into two spaces for cutlery and other small items. With this dish rack, you can always find the right place for various tableware!
Food Network’s February 2025 test covered 11 racks and selected KitchenAid overall and simplehuman as its splurge choice. Bob Vila’s 2024 test assembled and loaded eight racks, left wet dishes overnight, and assessed drainage, awkward cookware, movement when full, footprint, price, and appearance.
Those results point to a more useful standard than advertised plate counts: a good rack must protect the counter, remain stable with mixed dishes, fit the available space, and be practical to clean. No leading source in the supplied research provides a consistent numerical table for drainage time or a long-term rust and coating-wear study. Accordingly, claims such as “rustproof,” “drains completely,” and “mold-proof” should not be treated as established facts.
1. Joseph Joseph Extend Stainless-Steel Expandable Dish Drainer
Best overall for adaptable countertop use
The Joseph Joseph Extend is the best fit for a kitchen whose dish load changes from day to day. It can stay relatively compact for a few plates, then expand when you are washing cookware or a full dinner-for-four load. Bon Appétit selected it as its best overall dish rack after its reported test of 18 products.

- Approximate dimensions of 14 W × 12.25 D × 6.5 H inches when closed and about 14 W × 20.25 D × 6.5 H inches when expanded.
- A movable drain spout with three possible positions.
- A removable cutlery drainer with dedicated knife slots.
- Raised ribs and non-scratch prongs intended to keep dishes above pooled water and protect surfaces.
- Tool-free dismantling for cleaning.
- A two-year guarantee from the manufacturer; the U.S. site listed it at $59.99 on sale compared with a $75 regular price in the supplied research.
Bon Appétit reported fitting dishes, utensils, pots, and glassware from a dinner for four, as well as heavier cookware such as a Dutch oven. That makes the Extend more versatile than a basic plate-only rack, but its capacity depends heavily on how far it is expanded and where the utensil basket is placed.
What it gives up
Expansion is not the same as compactness. At more than 20 inches deep, the rack can consume most of a standard countertop when fully open. Its drain spout offers useful positioning but is less flexible than a true swivel spout, and published testing noted small recesses that could collect residue or become unpleasant if they are not cleaned regularly.
Joseph Joseph instructs owners to hand-wash and dry the rack, avoiding abrasive cloths and strong chemical cleaners. The rack also needs a level enough surface and a spout position that actually reaches the sink. A nominally adjustable drain path does not help if the counter is deep, the sink is recessed, or the sink rim sits too high.
Buy it if: your counter needs to accommodate both small and large loads, or you want more flexibility than a fixed rack provides.
Skip it if: your counter is shallow, you need a rack that stores completely out of sight, or you do not want to maintain a multi-part drainage system.
Evidence: Bon Appétit’s evaluation and Joseph Joseph’s product and care information.
2. KitchenAid Full-Size Dish-Drying Rack
Best for large loads and family kitchens
The KitchenAid Full-Size rack is the conventional, spacious option. It is a better answer than an expandable rack for households that regularly hand-wash most of their dishes and have a permanent place for a large rack on the counter.
What it offers
- Current Costco documentation identifies model KNS896FPCGC at 19.6 W × 14.9 D × 6.9 H inches.
- Rust-resistant satin-coated wires.
- A removable flatware caddy.
- Soft nonslip feet.
- An angled removable drainboard designed to direct water toward the sink.
- Enough room, according to Bob Vila’s evaluation, for four place settings, heavy cast-iron items, delicate china, cups, mugs, and cookware.
Food Network selected the KitchenAid as its overall winner after testing 11 racks, and Bob Vila reached the same overall conclusion in its eight-rack evaluation. That repeated result is meaningful for shoppers who prioritize stable capacity over storage.
What it gives up
The rack is large before it is loaded and difficult to move once it contains wet cookware. Its drainboard points in one direction, so the sink must be on the correct side or the rack may send water toward the counter. Measure the intended position rather than assuming that the drainboard can be reversed.
Availability is also a practical concern. The Costco listing identified in the research was unavailable when crawled, while a Costco same-day listing showed $45.39 and was also out of stock. Food Network listed it at approximately $70 in February 2025. Treat the KitchenAid as a model to verify across retailers, not as a product guaranteed to be in stock at one fixed price.
Rank #2
- Space-Saving Design: The dish drying rack (15.2” L x 11.2” W x 5.7” H) fits perfectly in the kitchen with limited space. It holds up to 10 plates, bowls, and cups while keeping your counter dry and organized. Say goodbye to clutter in your small kitchen or apartment!
- Rapid-Drain System: This dish drainer features an angled drip tray and a draining spout that channels water directly into the sink. No more puddles or soggy counters—enjoy faster drying and a cleaner workspace. Easy to store, small in size. Tips: Water may not drain smoothly if the sink edge is above the counter.
- Rust-Resistant Material: Made from high-quality, rust-proof, sturdy and stable metal, this dish rack resists rust, corrosion, and wear. Easy to rinse and maintain, the sturdy construction effortlessly holds all your dishes and cups.
- Assembly without Tools: Easy to setup, with such a simple structure, you can easily assemble the dish rack drainer together. Just following the help of the installation manual, no tools included!
- Removable Utensil Holder: Features a removable utensil holder with 3 separate compartments to keep your cutlery neatly sorted and right at your fingertips. No more cluttered utensils—everything has its place. Suitable for various occasions.
The full-size model should not be confused with KitchenAid’s separate compact and expandable racks. “KitchenAid dish rack” is not precise enough when checking dimensions or replacement parts.
Buy it if: you wash large mixed loads, use heavy pots and pans, and can dedicate roughly 20 by 15 inches of counter space.

3. simplehuman Steel Frame Dishrack, Standard
Best premium rack for permanent countertop use and stemware
The simplehuman Standard is for buyers who want a rack that remains on display and are willing to pay for a more specialized layout. Its most distinctive feature is not simply size; it is the integrated stemware holder, which is designed for up to four extra-large Bordeaux wine glasses.

- A swivel drain spout for more flexible sink positioning.
- An integrated wine-glass holder rated for up to four extra-large Bordeaux glasses.
- Silicone-capped plate holders.
- Removable accessories.
- A hydrophilic inner tray intended to spread water for faster evaporation.
- A five-year manufacturer warranty.
- A brushed version listed at $100 on simplehuman’s U.S. site; some white and matte-black versions were listed at $110.
Bob Vila described it as spacious enough for both large loads and smaller daily loads. Bon Appétit called it the largest rack in its test and praised the quality and stemware capacity. For a household that regularly washes wine glasses, the dedicated holder solves a problem that many ordinary racks leave to chance.
What it gives up
Size is the central drawback. Bob Vila lists the standard model at approximately 22.3 W × 20.2 D × 11.5 H inches, so it needs substantially more working space than the Joseph Joseph, KitchenAid, or OXO options. Check overhead cabinets and backsplash clearance as well as the countertop footprint.
The drainage system also needs attention. Bon Appétit praised the capacity but criticized the drain’s cleanability and the limited number of plate-support pegs. A large premium rack can still collect residue if its channels are neglected.
simplehuman generally does not recommend putting rack parts in the dishwasher. Its care guidance favors warm water, vinegar, mild detergent, and soft cleaning materials, and warns that harsh chemicals and abrasives can damage the coating and contribute to rusting. The finish should therefore be understood as a maintenance feature, not a lifetime guarantee against corrosion.
Buy it if: the rack will stay out permanently, you wash stemware often, and your counter can accommodate a very large unit.
Skip it if: you live with limited counter space, store the rack after every use, or are primarily looking for value.
Evidence: simplehuman’s specifications and care guidance, Bob Vila’s evaluation, and Bon Appétit’s comparison.

4. OXO Good Grips Aluminum Fold Flat Dish Rack
Best folding dish rack
The OXO Fold Flat is the clearest choice when storage matters more than automatic drainage. It can operate as an upright two-level rack or as a flatter drying board, then fold to roughly two inches high. That makes it particularly useful for renters, occasional hand-washing, and kitchens where the counter must be cleared for food preparation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What it offers
- Rustproof aluminum frame, according to OXO.
- Two-level configuration with raised ridges.
- Removable utensil cup that can be placed on either side.
- Nonslip feet.
- Approximate footprint of 16.4 × 14.6 inches.
- Flat storage at approximately two inches high.
- Manufacturer-listed price of $46.99 in the supplied research.
Bon Appétit selected it as its best folding rack after testing it in upright and flat configurations. The flexibility is real: it can provide separated levels for plates and smaller pieces, or a relatively open surface for larger items.
What it gives up
The lower level has height limitations, and Bon Appétit found that bowls did not always sit securely in the upper slots. Tall glasses and stemware are also difficult to accommodate. It is not the best choice for a family-size load containing deep bowls, tall tumblers, and a large pan.
The biggest drainage compromise is the tray. It holds residual water rather than sending it into the sink, so you must empty or wipe it. Published testing also found that the tray-ridge orientation can work against water flow. When folded, the utensil basket becomes a separate loose piece, which is easy to misplace in a small cabinet.
Buy it if: you need a rack that can be stored in a cabinet, stood vertically, or removed from the counter after occasional use.

5. SONGMICS Expandable Dish Drying Rack
Best budget-feature option, with an important model warning
SONGMICS offers many features for less money than the Joseph Joseph: expansion, knife slots, a divided utensil basket, glassware pegs, and support for cookware. It is the most attractive option here for a budget buyer who wants more than a basic $15–$30 rack can provide.
What it offers
- An expandable section and adjustable drain spout on the configurations described in the supplied research.
- Dedicated knife slots.
- A three-compartment utensil basket on the tested design.
- Glassware pegs and supports for plates, bowls, cups, cutting boards, and pans.
- Current SONGMICS listing: 19.1 inches wide, adjustable from 12.5 to 19.9 inches deep, and 8.9 inches high.
- Current listed price of $37.99 on sale compared with $49.99.
Bon Appétit reported that its tested SONGMICS rack held four place settings along with bowls, pots, pans, utensils, and glassware. The test also found that it offered many Joseph Joseph-style features at roughly half the price.
Why the exact model matters
SONGMICS sells several materially different dish-rack designs. The configuration described in Bon Appétit’s evaluation was approximately 20 W × 12.75 D × 9 H inches closed and 20 W × 22 D × 9 H inches open. The current product page linked above describes a different-looking configuration at 19.1 inches wide and 12.5–19.9 inches deep.
Do not combine those dimensions, accessory lists, or test results as though they describe one product. Check the exact SKU, photos, dimensions, drain design, and included basket before ordering. The current listing is identified in the supplied research as UKCS037, but marketplace listings may use different names or bundles.
What it gives up
Bon Appétit found that small and medium amounts of water could remain on the tray instead of draining. The expansion tray and accessories rely partly on gravity and friction rather than especially robust locking mechanisms. When extended, the rack can consume nearly the full depth of a standard 25-inch counter, and its materials and connection points feel less substantial than the Joseph Joseph’s.

- Auto-draining Drainboard: The dish drying rack includes central drainage holes and a swivel spout, making sure the water flows directly into the sink, not onto the countertop. The swivel spout is 360° rotatable so you can put the rack next to the sink in the best position for your needs, and have it work.
- Rustproof and Sturdy: The escurridor de platos is made of premium metal. Corrosion Resistant and Rust Resistant are ideal for kitchen applications. the sturdy construction will provide a strong load-bearing to storing all your kitchenware easily.

Cleaning may also take longer because of the tray and accessory interfaces. This is a plausible value choice, not the best pick for someone who wants effortless drainage, premium construction, or minimal maintenance.
Buy it if: you want expansion and multiple holders while keeping the price below most premium racks.
Skip it if: standing water, loose-feeling connections, model uncertainty, or extensive cleaning would frustrate you.
Evidence: Bon Appétit’s evaluation of a SONGMICS expandable design and the current SONGMICS product listing. Because those sources describe different configurations, verify the SKU before treating the test results as applicable.
The best alternative for almost no counter space: OXO Good Grips Over-the-Sink Aluminum Dish Rack
The OXO Good Grips Over-the-Sink Aluminum Dish Rack deserves consideration if preserving counter space is more important than capacity. It uses extendable arms, can sit over or inside a sink, includes upright plate holders, and has a removable divided utensil cup. OXO lists it as a rustproof aluminum rack at $46.99.
Bon Appétit found that it could span approximately 15 to 19 inches, but also found that its compact design limited capacity: four plates consumed more room than expected, leaving less space for glasses or cookware. It is not a replacement for a large countertop rack.
Measure the usable sink opening, rim width, faucet clearance, and the space needed to wash or fill a large pot. An over-sink rack can save the counter but block the basin, reduce access to the drain, interfere with the faucet, and require unloading before the sink can be used normally. It is best for a compatible sink and a small daily load—not a universal small-kitchen solution.
How to choose the right dish rack for your kitchen
Choose by household and use pattern
- For a family or frequent hand-washing: Start with the KitchenAid Full-Size. Choose the simplehuman Standard if stemware and premium permanent placement matter more than price.
- For changing loads: Choose the Joseph Joseph Extend. It handles small and larger loads without requiring a permanently expanded footprint.
- For a renter or occasional use: Choose the OXO Fold Flat. Its storage advantage is more important than its lack of automatic drainage.
- For a budget buyer who wants accessories: Consider SONGMICS, but verify the exact model and accept the drainage and construction compromises.
- For nearly zero counter space: Consider the OXO Over-the-Sink, provided the sink dimensions and faucet clearance work.
- For frequent wine-glass washing: The simplehuman Standard’s dedicated holder is the strongest match of these options.
Measure before ordering
Dish racks are small enough to seem easy to fit and large enough to create daily frustration. Treat the purchase like a tight countertop fit-out and record both the rack’s body dimensions and its operating clearance.
- Measure counter width and depth. Use the actual usable area, excluding the space needed for a coffee maker, faucet, backsplash, or cabinet doors.
- Measure the sink opening and rim. Note whether the sink is undermount or drop-in. A raised drop-in rim can prevent a drain spout or drying rack from reaching the basin.
- Measure the distance to the sink. Include the spout’s reach, not just the rack body. A rack can fit on the counter while its water outlet still misses the sink.
- Check height. Measure cabinet clearance, especially for the simplehuman Standard and racks with tall glass holders.
- Check the expanded footprint. Expandable models may be deeper than fixed racks when open. The SONGMICS configuration described by Bon Appétit reached approximately 22 inches deep when expanded.
- Check storage dimensions. For a folding rack, measure folded height and whether the utensil cup or other accessories become loose pieces.
- Check removal clearance. Leave enough room to take out the utensil basket, lift a full rack, or wipe beneath the tray.
Drainage: the feature that matters most
“Drains well” is too vague to be useful. A rack must handle light drips from plates, water under bowls and glasses, and occasional larger flows without sending water back onto the counter. Spout location, counter slope, sink-rim height, tray channels, and load position all matter.
If you are comparing a rack in your own kitchen, use three simple checks:
- Place freshly rinsed plates, bowls, and glasses in the rack and observe whether light drips reach the spout.
- Pour 250 milliliters of water onto the tray and check whether it flows toward the sink without pooling or leaking at the spout connection.
- Repeat with the rack partially and fully loaded, then inspect for residual water after five minutes, 15 minutes, and overnight.
A larger pour can reveal overflow problems that a few plate drips will not. Conversely, a rack may handle a large flow while leaving small drops in shallow tray recesses. That is why “eliminates all standing water” is an unjustified claim without a defined load and measurement period.
Capacity is more than a plate count
Manufacturers often advertise how many plates a rack can hold, but thin plates in evenly spaced slots do not represent a real kitchen load. Four plates can fit while four pasta bowls, four glasses, a frying pan, and a utensil basket make the rack unusable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a realistic comparison, use four 10- to 10.5-inch dinner plates, four cereal or pasta bowls, four drinking glasses, four sets of flatware, one 10-inch frying pan, one five-quart Dutch oven or similarly bulky pot, one cutting board, and one chef’s knife in a secured knife slot. Record whether wet surfaces touch, whether bowls remain upright, whether glasses are stable, and whether accessories block the main rack.
Best Value
- SPACIOUS DESIGN FOR LARGE LOADS: This full size dish rack offers ample space for plates, mugs, glasses, bowls, utensils, and even larger items like pots and pans. Please refer to product dimensions to ensure an ideal fit for your countertop.
- NON SLIP, STABLE BASE: Equipped with soft, anti slip feet, this dish rack stays securely in place, protecting surfaces and providing stability even on smooth countertops.
- RUST RESISTANT, DURABLE COATING: Constructed with heavy duty satin coated steel wires, this dish rack is designed to resist rusting and stand up to daily kitchen use. To maintain optimal rust resistance, dry the rack and drainboard after use.
- IMPROVED ANGLED DRAINAGE SYSTEM: The angled drainboard directs water straight into the sink, preventing pooling and keeping countertops dry. The board and rack are precisely aligned for smooth water flow and easy cleaning.
- REMOVABLE FLATWARE CADDY WITH ADJUSTABLE COMPARTMENTS: The flatware caddy features adjustable sections to keep utensils organized. Its built in handle makes it easy to remove and unload directly into drawers or cabinets.
Bowls deserve separate attention. Many designs are optimized for flat plates, and published testing found that bowls did not always sit securely in the OXO Fold Flat’s upper section. Tall glasses, champagne flutes, insulated bottles, and wide-bottomed beer glasses also expose capacity limits that a plate count hides.
Cleaning, rust, and wet-dry wear
A drainage system only helps if its tray, spout, and channels can be cleaned. Before buying, look for tool-free disassembly, removable drain components, open utensil holders, accessible channels, and smooth surfaces without deep enclosed grooves.
For routine care:
- Remove dishes and empty residual water after use.
- Rinse away food debris before it dries.
- Remove accessories and wash with warm water and mild dish soap.
- Use a narrow brush only when the manufacturer permits it and the part can be rinsed fully.
- Rinse every component and dry it completely before reassembly.
- Inspect welds, cut ends, coating edges, feet, and spout connections for rust, flaking, looseness, or trapped water.
Do not assume a rack is dishwasher-safe. Joseph Joseph specifies hand washing. The KitchenAid listing identified in the research says hand wash only. simplehuman generally advises against dishwashing rack parts because high heat can deform plastic. Avoid bleach, steel wool, harsh abrasives, and unapproved acids; simplehuman specifically warns that harsh chemicals and abrasives can damage its coating and contribute to rusting.
“Rustproof,” “rust-resistant,” and “corrosion-resistant” describe a material or manufacturer claim, not a guarantee of permanent service. Repeated wet/dry cycling, food residue, damaged coating, and water trapped where metal meets plastic can all change the outcome. The supplied independent tests are primarily short-term and do not establish how every model will perform after years of use.
When a basic $15–$30 rack is the better buy
A premium rack is not automatically better value. If you hand-wash only a few plates, already have a convenient sink-side drain path, and can tolerate wiping a tray, a basic rack may meet the need at a fraction of the cost. Pay more when you need a specific advantage: Joseph Joseph’s expansion, KitchenAid’s large stable load, simplehuman’s stemware holder, OXO’s fold-flat storage, or SONGMICS’ accessory set.
Do not pay for nominal capacity you cannot use. A $70 rack that does not fit the counter or drain into the sink is worse value than a $20 rack that fits correctly and is easy to clean.
Other drying systems worth considering
Not every kitchen needs a conventional rack. A drying mat or board can be easier to store for occasional hand-washing, although Bon Appétit found the Dorai Dish Pad space-conscious and effective but comparatively fragile and expensive. The IKEA Rinnig drainer and plate holder can be inexpensive, but clearance over a high sink lip may prevent proper drainage. An Umbra Sinkin is designed for in-sink drying, which preserves counter space but reduces access to the basin. These alternatives solve different problems and should not be ranked directly against a large countertop rack.

Special note for infant feeding items
Do not assume that an ordinary dish rack is automatically appropriate for bottles, pump parts, or other infant feeding equipment. The CDC advises that drying racks can trap moisture, allowing mold and germs to grow, and can be difficult to clean. It recommends a clean, protected air-drying setup and thorough drying. If a rack is used for these items, reserve it for that purpose and clean it regularly. Follow the CDC’s infant-feeding cleaning guidance rather than relying on general dish-rack marketing.
Bottom line
Choose the Joseph Joseph Extend when adaptability and sink-directed drainage are your priorities. Choose the KitchenAid Full-Size for the largest ordinary family loads, if you can find the correct model in stock and position its fixed drainboard correctly. Choose the simplehuman Standard for a permanent premium setup with unusually good stemware support. Choose the OXO Fold Flat when storage is the deciding factor. Choose SONGMICS when price and accessories matter more than premium construction and perfectly reliable drainage.
Before ordering, measure the counter, sink opening, rim height, spout reach, cabinet clearance, and expanded footprint. That fit check will prevent more frustration than an advertised plate count ever will.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which dish rack is best for most kitchens?
The Joseph Joseph Extend is the strongest general-purpose choice for adaptable countertop use because it expands for larger loads, includes a movable drain spout, and can be dismantled for cleaning. It is not ideal for very shallow counters or anyone who wants a completely maintenance-free drainage system.

Do dish racks really drain into the sink?
Some do, but performance depends on the spout reach, counter level, sink-rim height, and load. Test the rack in its intended position with light drips and a measured 250-milliliter pour. A rack can drain a large flow while still leaving small amounts of water in tray recesses.
Is a folding dish rack better than a countertop rack?
A folding rack is better when counter space must be reclaimed after use. The OXO Fold Flat stores at roughly two inches high and can be used in two configurations, but its tray holds water, its upper bowl support is less secure, and it is not well suited to tall stemware or full family loads.
How do I know whether a dish rack will fit beside my sink?
Measure usable counter width and depth, the distance from the rack position to the sink, sink-rim height, faucet and backsplash clearance, and the rack’s expanded dimensions. Include the drain spout and the space required to remove the utensil holder; the published body dimensions alone may not show the actual working footprint.
Can I put a dish rack in the dishwasher?
Do not assume so. Joseph Joseph specifies hand washing, the KitchenAid listing identified here says hand wash only, and simplehuman generally advises against dishwashing rack parts because high heat can deform plastic. Check care instructions for every component and use mild detergent and soft cleaning tools unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
