There is no single best dish-drying rack for every kitchen. The right choice depends on whether you wash a family’s worth of dishes or only a few glasses, how much counter space you can spare, whether your sink can support an over-the-sink model, and how much cookware you need to dry.
This research-backed shortlist covers five genuinely different solutions: the KitchenAid Full-Size Dish-Drying Rack for large loads, the simplehuman Steel Frame Dishrack for a polished premium setup, the OXO Good Grips Foldaway Dish Rack for storage-conscious kitchens, the Joseph Joseph Extend for adjustable capacity, and the Surpahs Roll-Up Rack for drying directly over the sink.
Important qualification: these are proposed recommendations and a testing slate based on product specifications and independent coverage. I could not verify a publicly indexed Better Homes & Gardens article under the exact title “The 5 Best Dish Drying Racks, Tested by BHG,” so this article does not represent an official BHG winner list or claim that BHG tested these five products. The protocol below explains how the racks should be tested under identical conditions before publishing definitive “best” awards.

The five best dish-drying rack choices
1. KitchenAid Full-Size Dish-Drying Rack: best overall candidate for large loads
The KitchenAid Full-Size Dish-Drying Rack is the strongest general-purpose candidate for a household that hand-washes frequently. Its 19.6-by-14.9-inch listed footprint gives it more room than compact racks, and it includes a drainboard and removable flatware caddy.
#1 Best Overall
- COMPACT VOLUME: Kitsure dish rack is suitable for kitchens with limited space. The bottom layer measures only 12''W x 15.5''L and the overall height is 5". The rack is capable of holding 10 plates and other bowls and glasses. With a Kitsure dish rack, you can perfectly save your countertop space.
- PREMIUM MATERIAL: Kitsure Kitchen dish drying rack has a plastic drainboard and premium rust-proof metal which can effectively prevent rust and deformation. And you can clean the rack easily by rinsing it under a running tap. Tips: Water may not drain smoothly if the sink edge is above the counter.
- EASY INSTALL & CLEAN: Kitsure dish drainer is easy to install with the attached installation manual. In addition, with the waterproof coating, the rack is also easy to clean. All you need to do is wipe the rack with a damp cloth or rinse it under a running tap after use. The water pipe can also be disassembled for cleaning.
- EASY TO USE: Kitsure drying rack for kitchen consists of a cutlery holder, a dish rack, and a drainboard set. With such a simple structure, it is easy to install as no tool is needed in the process. the dish rack stays firmly where it is.
- DETACHABLE CUTLERY HOLDER: The cutlery holder of this dish drying rack is divided into two spaces for cutlery and other small items. With this dish rack, you can always find the right place for various tableware!
The rack’s wires are satin-coated and described as rust-resistant by the product listing. Its angled drainboard is designed to direct water toward the sink rather than leaving it beneath the rack. Those features address the two biggest problems with inexpensive racks: insufficient room and water collecting on the counter.
Why it stands out
- Large enough for a balanced meal load rather than only a few plates.
- Includes a separate utensil caddy and drainboard.
- Angled drainage is more useful than a flat tray if the rack is correctly leveled and positioned.
- The open-wire design should allow air around plates, glasses, and cookware.
What still needs to be tested
- Whether it remains stable with a heavy skillet or Dutch oven alongside plates and glasses.
- Whether the drainboard prevents countertop pooling after several hours.
- Whether the utensil caddy drains or traps water at its base.
- Whether the nearly 20-inch length and 15-inch depth fit an ordinary kitchen counter.
Choose it if: you routinely wash dishes for several people and can dedicate a sizeable area of counter space.

Food Network named this KitchenAid model its best overall rack after testing 11 products, but that independent result is evidence that it is a strong candidate—not proof of a BHG test result. See Food Network’s comparison for its test context.
2. simplehuman Steel Frame Dishrack: best splurge candidate
The simplehuman Steel Frame Dishrack is aimed at people who want a dish rack to look acceptable while it remains permanently on the counter. The brushed version was listed at $100 on the cited official page and includes a five-year warranty.
Its most distinctive feature is a swivel drain spout that can be oriented toward the sink from different directions. The tray has a hydrophilic coating intended to spread water across the surface so it can evaporate more quickly. An integrated wine-glass rack is designed to hold up to four extra-large Bordeaux glasses, making this a more specialized choice than a basic plate-and-cup rack.
Why it stands out
- Swivel drainage can make placement easier when the sink is not directly in front of the rack.
- The dedicated wine-glass holder may protect stemware better than laying glasses across ordinary rack wires.
- The premium finish and five-year warranty are meaningful for a rack that stays visible.
- The tray and accessories are designed as part of one drainage system rather than as a loose mat and basket.
Trade-offs
- The price is substantially higher than many basic dish racks.
- The wine-glass feature takes up space and may be unnecessary for households that mostly use tumblers.
- More removable parts can mean more corners, channels, and caddy surfaces to clean.
- A drain spout still requires a level counter and enough clearance to reach the sink.
Simplehuman advises against putting parts in the dishwasher unless they are specifically labeled dishwasher-safe. It also warns that harsh chemicals and abrasives can damage finishes, so care should follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than relying on generic stainless-steel cleaning advice.
Choose it if: you hand-wash often, have stemware to protect, and are willing to pay for design, drainage flexibility, and warranty coverage.
Skip it if: you need maximum capacity per dollar or plan to hide the rack in a cabinet.
3. OXO Good Grips Foldaway Dish Rack: best folding candidate for small households
The OXO Good Grips Foldaway Dish Rack is the most practical choice here for a household that does not want a rack occupying the counter all day. It measures 19.4 by 15.5 by 5.125 inches open and closes to 19.4 by 12.5 by 3.875 inches, according to OXO’s product page.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →It has a fold-down plate rack, a cup rack intended to keep glasses inside the rack, and a drain spout. The stainless-steel construction and folding parts make it more substantial than a simple drying mat, but the storage advantage matters only if the rack can be folded without excessive rearranging or dripping water through the kitchen.
Why it stands out
- Closed dimensions are shallower than the open footprint, making cabinet or pantry storage easier.
- The plate rack folds down when you need space for other items.
- The cup rack helps separate glasses from plates and cookware.
- A drain spout gives it more controlled drainage than a rack that relies on a flat tray.
Limitations
- Its listed open footprint is still large; “foldaway” does not mean compact while in use.
- A large skillet, Dutch oven, or cutting board may consume much of the available space.
- The folding mechanism must be tested when wet and loaded, not only when empty.
- OXO’s product page identifies the construction but does not use that page to promise dishwasher cleaning for every component.
Food Network specifically highlighted OXO’s folding legs, fold-down plate rack, drain spout, and compact storage as reasons it suited small households. It is a better fit for occasional or moderate hand-washing than for a family that fills the rack repeatedly throughout the day.
Choose it if: you want a real rack for daily use but need to reclaim the counter afterward.
Rank #2
- Space-Saving Design: The dish drying rack (15.2” L x 11.2” W x 5.7” H) fits perfectly in the kitchen with limited space. It holds up to 10 plates, bowls, and cups while keeping your counter dry and organized. Say goodbye to clutter in your small kitchen or apartment!
- Rapid-Drain System: This dish drainer features an angled drip tray and a draining spout that channels water directly into the sink. No more puddles or soggy counters—enjoy faster drying and a cleaner workspace. Easy to store, small in size. Tips: Water may not drain smoothly if the sink edge is above the counter.
- Rust-Resistant Material: Made from high-quality, rust-proof, sturdy and stable metal, this dish rack resists rust, corrosion, and wear. Easy to rinse and maintain, the sturdy construction effortlessly holds all your dishes and cups.
- Assembly without Tools: Easy to setup, with such a simple structure, you can easily assemble the dish rack drainer together. Just following the help of the installation manual, no tools included!
- Removable Utensil Holder: Features a removable utensil holder with 3 separate compartments to keep your cutlery neatly sorted and right at your fingertips. No more cluttered utensils—everything has its place. Suitable for various occasions.
Skip it if: your priority is the largest possible cookware capacity or you will never fold it away.
4. Joseph Joseph Extend Stainless-Steel Expandable Dish Drainer: best expandable candidate
The Joseph Joseph Extend solves a different problem: the load changes. In its closed configuration, the listed dimensions are 14 by 6.5 by 12.25 inches; it extends to 20.25 inches in length when more drying space is needed.
The rack includes a movable cutlery drainer, knife slots, raised ribs intended to keep water from remaining beneath glasses and bowls, and a spout that can be positioned in three places. In theory, that lets a small rack handle a light breakfast load and a much larger dinner load without permanently consuming the expanded footprint.
Why it stands out
- Adjustable length is useful when dish volume varies from day to day.
- The raised ribs should improve airflow beneath upside-down bowls and glasses.
- Three spout positions offer more flexibility than a fixed drain opening.
- Dedicated knife slots are preferable to treating a general utensil cup as a knife organizer.
Limitations
- Expansion changes length, not every aspect of the rack’s capacity; it may still be narrow for large cookware.
- The rack must stay level when extended and loaded unevenly.
- Sliding surfaces, joints, channels, and recesses may collect food residue or mineral deposits.
- It is listed as hand-wash only.
Bon Appétit included Joseph Joseph as a leading choice in its July 2026 dish-rack update, while the brand’s own specifications explain the expansion and drainage design. The useful question for testing is not simply whether it gets longer, but whether the added length remains stable and drains correctly when the rack is full.
Choose it if: your typical load varies and you want one rack that can be compact or larger.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSkip it if: your counter is too shallow for the closed dimensions or you want the simplest possible rack to wash.
5. Surpahs Over-the-Sink Multipurpose Roll-Up Rack: best candidate for minimal counter space
The Surpahs Over-the-Sink Multipurpose Roll-Up Dish Drying Rack puts drying space over the sink instead of beside it. The extra-large model measures 20.5 by 15.5 inches and is specified by the manufacturer for sinks up to 19.5 inches wide.
It is made from silicone-wrapped steel, rolls for storage, is listed as dishwasher-safe, is heat-resistant to 400°F, and carries a lifetime warranty according to the official product page. Its price is especially volatile: the cited page displayed a list price of $37.99 and a sale price of $27.48, so verify the current price and stock before publication or purchase.
Why it stands out
- Water falls directly into the sink rather than onto a drainboard or counter.
- It rolls into a drawer or cabinet more easily than an upright rack.
- The flexible surface can also be useful as a temporary surface for cookware or produce when the manufacturer’s stated uses apply.
- It is a strong solution when counter space—not maximum dish organization—is the limiting factor.
Limitations
- It does not provide dedicated upright plate slots, cup hooks, or a conventional flatware caddy.
- Flexible rods may be less stable for tall glasses or a heavily loaded stack of dishes.
- The sink rim must support both sides securely; nominal sink width alone is not enough.
- It may cover a drain, second basin, faucet sprayer, or part of the sink while in use.
- Silicone edges and seams should be checked for residue, odors, and mineral buildup over time.
Roll-up racks are best understood as a separate category, not as smaller versions of upright racks. Food Network and TechGearLab treated them as useful for small loads or supplemental drying rather than automatic replacements for a high-capacity family rack.

How to choose the right type of dish rack
Countertop racks
A countertop rack is the default for frequent hand-washing and larger loads. It normally offers the best organization for plates, bowls, glasses, mugs, and utensils. The cost is permanent counter space, plus the need to manage water that drains into a tray or toward the sink.
Two-tier racks
Two-tier racks increase vertical capacity without adding as much counter depth. They can be useful for families, but the upper level may make the rack top-heavy. Measure cabinet clearance with your tallest glasses in place; a rack that fits empty may be unusable when loaded.
Rank #3
- COMPACT DESIGN: Measuring only 15.6"*12.0"*4.9", Sakugi dish rack features a compact design. Meanwhile, it's capable of holding 6 plates and other bowls and glasses. Sakugi drying rack makes full use of your kitchen space.

- CONVENIENT CUTLERY HOLDER: The cutlery holder of this dish drying rack with drainboard is separated into two spaces. You can set your spoons, knives, forks, and other small kitchenware in two categories. With this drying rack, you can have your various tableware well-organized!
Expandable racks
An expandable rack is a compromise between a small and large countertop model. It is useful when dish volume changes, but hinges and sliding parts add cleaning requirements. Confirm that the rack remains level and that the drainage path still works at every usable extension.
Foldaway racks
Foldaway racks are best when storage matters as much as drying. They are particularly useful in apartments, studios, guest kitchens, and homes with dishwashers where only certain items are hand-washed. Their disadvantage is that the largest open capacity may not match a permanent full-size rack.
Over-the-sink and in-sink racks
These save counter space and usually drain directly into the basin. They require exact measurement and can be awkward with two-basin sinks, rounded rims, undermount sinks, pull-out sprayers, or low faucets. They are often better for light loads, cookware, or supplemental drying than for a family’s entire dishwashing cycle.
Roll-up racks and drying mats
A roll-up rack or mat is convenient for a few glasses, washed produce, or a pan. It is not usually the best primary rack for a household that needs upright plate slots and a place for flatware. Do not compare a mat’s small-load convenience directly with a full-size rack’s dinner-load capacity.
Recommended Free Tools
How much capacity do you actually need?
Ignore vague descriptions such as “large capacity” unless they are accompanied by a useful load. Before buying, ask whether the rack can accommodate:
- Four large dinner plates held upright without leaning dangerously.
- Four drinking glasses without their rims touching neighboring items.
- Four sets of flatware in a caddy that drains properly.
- Two bowls without forcing them to lie flat on top of wet plates.
- One mug.
- One cutting board.
- One 10-inch frying pan or a comparable cookware item.
This balanced load is more informative than a raw count of plates. A rack that holds 20 plates but no bowls, glasses, or pans may be less useful than one that handles a complete meal.
For a larger stress test, add a 5-quart Dutch oven and a 10-inch frying pan. Bon Appétit has described a comparable standardized-load approach, including four large plates, four drinking glasses, four flatware sets, a Dutch oven, and a frying pan. That is a testing reference, not a claim that BHG used the same protocol.
How the racks should be tested before a definitive BHG award
A trustworthy comparison should test all five products under the same conditions. Product pages and other publications can identify promising candidates, but they cannot replace a controlled comparison of capacity, stability, drainage, cleaning, and storage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Document the exact products
- Buy each unit at retail or disclose the source of any supplied sample.
- Record model number, size, color, accessories, price, purchase date, and test date.
- Test the exact retail variant linked in the article; do not test a compact version while linking to a standard version.
- Measure each rack independently, including spouts, handles, caddies, hooks, and its full expanded footprint.
- Photograph every rack empty, fully loaded, draining, folded or closed, and cleaned.
- Record assembly time, required tools, and whether the instructions are clear.
BHG has described a wider product-testing process involving editors, experts, research, and testing labs. A dish-rack article should supplement that broad process with a clearly disclosed rack-specific protocol.
2. Test balanced capacity
Use the same dishes for every model. Record the maximum stable number of plates, bowls, glasses, mugs, and utensils, along with the largest pan or cutting board that fits. Note whether the full load can dry without stacking wet items on top of one another.
3. Test stability
Use the balanced load, then add a heavy skillet or Dutch oven on one side and three fragile glasses on the other. TechGearLab used an eight-pound cast-iron skillet with three fragile glasses as a deliberate stability challenge. That is a stress test—not an ordinary required load for every rack.
Record sliding, tipping, wobbling, plate leaning, glass contact, flexing, sharp edges, loose rods, and whether the rack shifts when one item is removed from a partially full load.
4. Test drainage in more than one orientation
- Place the rack in the manufacturer’s recommended position.
- Add a full load of wet dishes.
- Pour a measured amount of water across the rack.
- Check the spout, drainboard, countertop, and sink clearance.
- Repeat with the rack rotated or moved to another advertised orientation.
- Inspect beneath cups, bowls, the utensil caddy, feet, and removable tray.
- Record standing water after 15 minutes and again after several hours.
Test light drips separately from a heavy pour. Slow drips may behave differently from a large stream, and a drain spout cannot prevent leaks if the rack is tilted away from the sink or positioned too far from it. Bon Appétit’s testing has usefully distinguished these different water-flow conditions.
Rank #4
- Detachable 2 Tier Dish Rack: This drying rack for kitchen counter take a detachable 2-tier design. Together with a utensil holder, a cup rack, providing a large space for storing tableware such as dishes, plates, bowls, mugs, kitchen pots and frying pans.
- Auto-draining Drainboard: The dish drying rack includes central drainage holes and a swivel spout, making sure the water flows directly into the sink, not onto the countertop. The swivel spout is 360° rotatable so you can put the rack next to the sink in the best position for your needs, and have it work.
- Rustproof and Sturdy: The escurridor de platos is made of premium metal. Corrosion Resistant and Rust Resistant are ideal for kitchen applications. the sturdy construction will provide a strong load-bearing to storing all your kitchenware easily.
- Assembly Without Tools: No screws and tools are needed, you can easily assemble the dish rack drainer together. Just following the help of the installation manual, no tools included! It Only Takes 1 min to install a perfect dish drying rack with drainboard.
- Multifunctional Rack: Besides drain board, this kitchen dish drying rack comes with a cup rack and a utensil holder, the side cutlery rack can hold various utensils, meet your needs for storing kitchenware.
5. Test everyday usability
Evaluate one-handed loading, removing a full caddy, placing plates without striking glasses, taking one item from the middle of a full rack, fitting a large pan, operating the folding or expansion mechanism, and safely separating knives. A rack should not earn a high score merely because it holds many pieces if loading it is frustrating.
6. Test cleaning
After wet-load testing, disassemble removable components according to the instructions. Inspect hinges, sliding rails, feet, drainage channels, tray undersides, caddy bottoms, and silicone seams. Record trapped water, residue, odor, discoloration, coating damage, and mineral buildup.
Do not put a rack or component in a dishwasher unless the exact manufacturer instructions permit it. “Stainless steel” does not automatically mean that coated parts, plastic pieces, silicone feet, or attached accessories are dishwasher-safe.
7. Measure operating and storage footprints
Report both the rack’s usable footprint and its operating footprint. The latter includes spout clearance, wine-glass holders, caddies, handles, and the room needed to load or fold the rack. For folding and expandable models, report open and closed dimensions. For over-sink models, report the supported sink width and the actual ledge conditions required.
8. Judge value by the problem solved
Value should combine price, usable capacity, drainage, sturdiness, warranty, replacement-part availability, cleaning burden, and the space problem the rack solves. A cheaper rack is not a bargain if it leaks onto the counter or cannot hold a useful meal load; a premium rack may be worthwhile if its drainage, warranty, or glassware protection solves a persistent problem.
Measure your kitchen before buying
For a countertop rack
- Measure the counter width and depth available after allowing room to load dishes.
- Include the drain spout, caddy, wine-glass holder, handles, and any extended section.
- Check height beneath cabinets, especially with tall glasses or mugs loaded.
- Determine whether the counter slopes toward or away from the sink.
- Leave enough room for the spout to reach the basin without dripping across the counter.
For an over-sink rack
- Measure the interior sink width or the distance between the actual supporting ledges.
- Measure front-to-back depth and check whether both ends rest securely.
- Check faucet, sprayer, soap-dispenser, window, and cabinet clearance.
- Determine whether the rack blocks the drain, second basin, garbage-disposal opening, or sink accessories.
- Inspect the rim shape. Rounded or narrow rims may provide less support than the nominal sink width suggests.
Surpahs specifies that its extra-large model fits sinks up to 19.5 inches wide, but that is a manufacturer fit claim, not a guarantee for every sink with that measurement. Ledge depth, rim shape, faucet placement, and load distribution still determine whether it is safe and stable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Important trade-offs and failure modes
Hard water and water spots
Mineral spots on glasses do not necessarily mean the rack is draining badly. If your water is hard, items may need to be towel-dried after draining. Use a clean towel, and distinguish mineral residue from actual standing water or a leaking tray. Good Housekeeping discusses this distinction in its dish-rack guidance.
Rust and coating wear
“Rust-resistant” does not mean rust-proof. Stainless-steel grades and finishes vary, and coated wires can chip or wear at contact points. A short test can show immediate sturdiness and whether visible rust appears during the test period; it cannot prove that a rack will remain corrosion-free after a year of daily wet use.
Cast iron
Do not leave cast iron wet in any rack for an extended period. Dry it promptly and maintain its seasoning according to the cookware manufacturer’s instructions. A rack can support a heavy pan without being suitable for storing that pan while damp.
Knives
A general utensil cup is not automatically a safe knife holder. Use dedicated slots when provided. Otherwise, follow the rack and knife manufacturer’s guidance; never force sharp blades into a crowded caddy where they can contact hands or other utensils.
Wood and bamboo
Wood can take longer to dry than metal and some plastics. It is not maintenance-free: empty standing water, clean it according to its instructions, and allow it to dry fully between heavy uses. Good Housekeeping identifies drying speed and rust prevention as material-related considerations.
Cleaning chemicals
Do not assume that bleach, steel wool, abrasive powders, or harsh sprays are appropriate. They can damage coatings and finishes. Use the manufacturer’s care instructions, especially for premium racks with treated trays or silicone components.
Are dish racks worthwhile if you have a dishwasher?
Yes, often. Many dishwasher owners still hand-wash knives, cast iron, wood utensils, nonstick cookware, fragile stemware, oversized items, and pieces that should not go through a dishwasher. A rack is also useful when a dishwasher is full or when only a few items need washing. Bon Appétit makes the same broader point: a dishwasher does not eliminate the need to hand-dry every kitchen item.
Best Value
- SPACIOUS DESIGN FOR LARGE LOADS: This full size dish rack offers ample space for plates, mugs, glasses, bowls, utensils, and even larger items like pots and pans. Please refer to product dimensions to ensure an ideal fit for your countertop.
- NON SLIP, STABLE BASE: Equipped with soft, anti slip feet, this dish rack stays securely in place, protecting surfaces and providing stability even on smooth countertops.
- RUST RESISTANT, DURABLE COATING: Constructed with heavy duty satin coated steel wires, this dish rack is designed to resist rusting and stand up to daily kitchen use. To maintain optimal rust resistance, dry the rack and drainboard after use.
- IMPROVED ANGLED DRAINAGE SYSTEM: The angled drainboard directs water straight into the sink, preventing pooling and keeping countertops dry. The board and rack are precisely aligned for smooth water flow and easy cleaning.
- REMOVABLE FLATWARE CADDY WITH ADJUSTABLE COMPARTMENTS: The flatware caddy features adjustable sections to keep utensils organized. Its built in handle makes it easy to remove and unload directly into drawers or cabinets.
Air-drying is not a sanitizing function of the rack, and it is not automatically more sanitary in every household. The narrower, supportable benefit is that, after washing and sanitizing, air-drying avoids rubbing a potentially contaminated towel across clean dishes. The FDA Food Code requires air-drying or adequate draining in food establishments and says clean utensils may not be cloth-dried before use. The CDC gives similar air-drying guidance for infant-feeding items. These are food-service or specialized public-health guidelines, not a federal household mandate.
How to keep a dish rack clean
- Empty standing water from trays and caddies instead of allowing it to sit indefinitely.
- Wash the rack, tray, feet, and utensil holder regularly, following the product’s care instructions.
- Clean narrow drainage channels, hinges, sliding rails, and silicone seams where residue collects.
- Allow the rack itself to dry between heavy uses when possible.
- Do not use a dishwasher for a part unless the exact product documentation says it is dishwasher-safe.
- Avoid harsh abrasives and chemicals when the manufacturer warns they can damage the finish.
- Inspect coated wires, welds, feet, and caddy hardware for rust or coating damage.
Why these five categories are more useful than five similar countertop racks
Many buying guides compare several nearly identical countertop baskets. That can help readers who already know they want a permanent rack, but it does not solve the more common space and use-case decisions. These five categories cover:
Recommended Free Tools
- Permanent high capacity: KitchenAid.
- Premium visible-counter design: simplehuman.
- Foldaway storage: OXO.
- Adjustable capacity: Joseph Joseph.
- Direct-over-sink drying: Surpahs.
Independent coverage supports the shortlist but does not eliminate the need for a common test. Food Network tested 11 racks and selected KitchenAid overall; Good Housekeeping reports evaluating more than 20 models and brands; TechGearLab tested 11 after researching more than 50; and Bon Appétit’s cited update tested 18 racks. Their differing winners reinforce the importance of publishing the load, drainage, stability, cleaning, and fit conditions behind any “best” award.
Which rack should you choose?
- You wash dishes for three or four people: Start with KitchenAid or another full-size countertop rack.
- You want the rack to remain attractive on the counter: Consider simplehuman if its price and extra features are justified for you.
- You have a small kitchen but still need a structured rack: Choose OXO if its open footprint fits and you will actually store it closed.
- Your load changes substantially from day to day: Choose Joseph Joseph Extend, provided both the closed and expanded sizes fit.
- You have almost no free counter space: Choose Surpahs only after measuring the sink’s supporting ledges and checking the load you expect it to hold.
- You mainly dry one pan, a few glasses, or produce: A roll-up rack or mat may be more practical than a full-size rack.
- You have low cabinets: Measure loaded height, not just the empty rack.
- You have hard water: Prioritize easy-to-empty trays and caddies, but expect that glasses may still need a clean towel to remove mineral spots.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are dish racks sanitary?
A dish rack does not sanitize dishes. Its practical benefit is to let washed items drain and air-dry, which can avoid rubbing a potentially contaminated towel over clean dishes. Clean the rack itself regularly and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. FDA and CDC air-drying guidance cited here applies to food establishments or specialized situations such as infant-feeding equipment, not as a federal household mandate.
Is stainless steel better than plastic for a dish rack?
Neither material is automatically best. Stainless steel and coated metal often dry quickly and can feel sturdy, while plastic and silicone may be gentler on glassware and easier to handle. Stainless steel can still spot or corrode, coatings can wear, and silicone seams can collect residue. Judge the complete design, including drainage and cleanability.
Do dish racks rust?
They can. “Rust-resistant” is not the same as rust-proof. Inspect coated wires, welds, feet, and caddy hardware, and avoid leaving water trapped on the rack. A short product test can report whether rust appeared during testing but cannot establish year-long corrosion resistance.
Can I put a dish rack in the dishwasher?
Only if the exact product instructions say that the rack or specific component is dishwasher-safe. Stainless-steel construction does not make every plastic, silicone, coated, or attached part dishwasher-safe. Simplehuman specifically advises against dishwasher cleaning unless a part is labeled dishwasher-safe; the Surpahs product page lists its roll-up rack as dishwasher-safe.
How do I measure for an over-the-sink rack?
Measure the distance between the actual supporting ledges, not only the sink’s advertised width. Also check front-to-back depth, rim shape, faucet and sprayer clearance, cabinet or window interference, and whether the rack blocks a drain or second basin. The rack must rest securely on both sides under the expected load.
Is a rack or a drying mat better for a small kitchen?
Choose a folding rack if you need upright plate organization and flatware storage but want to put the rack away. Choose a mat or roll-up rack if you dry only a few items, cookware, or produce and want the smallest storage footprint. A mat generally cannot replace a full family rack.
Can I put knives in the utensil holder?
Only when the holder has dedicated knife slots or the manufacturer specifically supports that use. A crowded general-purpose caddy may expose blades or allow them to contact hands and other utensils. Follow the rack’s instructions and handle knives separately when in doubt.
How often should I clean a dish rack?
Clean it regularly rather than waiting for visible slime, odor, or mineral buildup. The correct interval depends on how often you use it and how much standing water it retains. Empty trays and caddies frequently, wash drainage channels and feet, and allow the rack to dry between heavy uses.
What is the best rack for large pots and pans?
A full-size countertop rack such as the KitchenAid is the strongest candidate here because it offers more open area, but the exact answer depends on whether the pan fits without blocking plates and glasses. Test a 10-inch frying pan and a Dutch oven rather than relying on an advertised item count.
Is a roll-up rack strong enough for dishes?
It can be suitable for light loads if both ends are securely supported by the sink ledges. It is less likely to organize and stabilize a full family load of plates, glasses, bowls, and flatware than an upright rack. Test the rack with your heaviest pan and tallest glass before treating it as a primary dish rack.
The Bottom Line
The best dish-drying rack is the one that matches your space and load rather than the one with the highest advertised capacity. Choose KitchenAid for a large, permanent countertop setup; simplehuman for premium drainage and stemware features; OXO when foldaway storage matters; Joseph Joseph Extend when capacity needs to change; and Surpahs when preserving counter space is the priority.

Before calling any model the definitive BHG winner, test all five with the same balanced dish load, heavy cookware, fragile glasses, drainage orientations, cleaning routine, and storage measurements. That distinction matters: the shortlist is research-backed, while a true “tested by BHG” ranking requires documented first-party testing.
