The 5 Best Countertop Microwaves of 2026

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most households, the Toshiba 7-in-1 countertop microwave Oven is the best countertop microwave of 2026 because it combines even microwave heating with air-fry, convection, broil, sensor-cook, and combination modes. It is not the right choice for everyone, though. Choose the Hamilton Beach 1.1 Cu. Ft. model for straightforward value, the Black + Decker Digital Countertop Microwave for the smallest footprint, the Panasonic HomeChef 4-in-1 for the broadest cooking capability, or the GE JES1109RRSS for the easiest controls.

These recommendations are based primarily on Good Housekeeping’s July 22, 2026 countertop microwave evaluation, which assessed more than 16 models, with an independent cross-check from RTINGS’ countertop microwave testing. The Black + Decker pick was selected from specifications, features, and the brand’s testing history rather than a direct Good Housekeeping laboratory test.

Our picks at a glance

The best model depends on whether you mainly reheat leftovers or want a second countertop oven. Combination models add useful functions, but they also take up more space, involve more accessories, and require more cleanup. Traditional microwave-only models are usually the better fit for simple daily use.

1. Toshiba 7-in-1 Countertop Microwave Oven: Best overall

Toshiba 7-in-1 countertop microwave is the strongest all-purpose choice if you want one appliance to reheat meals and occasionally replace an air fryer or small convection oven. Its seven cooking functions are microwave, air fry, convection, broil, defrost, sensor cook, and combination cooking. The unit has a 1.0-cubic-foot cavity and 1,000 watts of microwave output.

#1 Best Overall
TOSHIBA Countertop Microwave Oven, 1.2 Cu.Ft, 1000W, Stainless Steel | Smart Humidity Sensor, 12 Auto Menus, Mute Function, ECO Mode, Easy Clean Interior
  • Microwave output power 1000 watts, input power 1600 watts. External dimensions 20.6 x 14.6 x 11.8 inches (WxDxH); includes 12.4-inch glass turntable.
  • Smart Sensor Technology for Optimal Cooking: Automatically adjusts cooking time and power based on food humidity, ensuring perfectly cooked meals every time. Say goodbye to overcooked or undercooked dishes.
  • 6 Preset Menus: This countertop microwave features 6 preset menu options for popular foods like pizza, veggie, sensor reheat and more.
  • 10 Unique Power Levels with clock and kitchen timer: Tailor your cooking power levels for greater culinary flexibility, making it an essential kitchen tool. Perfect for everything from deodorization to boiling liquids.
  • Easy Defrost & One touch start: Defrost your frozen food by weight or by time. Quick access to start the microwave from 1 to 6 minutes cooking at full power.

Good Housekeeping reported especially even results when testing melted cheese, baked potatoes, and a large macaroni-and-cheese casserole. That matters more in everyday use than a wattage number alone: a fast microwave that leaves cold spots can be more frustrating than a slightly slower model that heats a plate consistently. The Toshiba also includes inverter technology, humidity-based sensor cooking, a mute function, a handle-operated door, and a plus-30-seconds control.

The main usability complaint is that the codes for some presets are printed inside the microwave rather than on the exterior control panel. You may need to open the door or consult the interior label until the controls become familiar.

Important model-number caution: Good Housekeeping’s accessible roundup identifies this product by its family name rather than displaying a definitive retail model number. Toshiba’s current U.S. microwave catalog confirms that the company sells sensor-equipped and air-fryer combination countertop models, but it does not establish that every similarly named Toshiba model is the Good Housekeeping test unit. Confirm the exact model, capacity, modes, inverter status, and dimensions with the retailer or manufacturer before ordering.

Choose it if: you want the best balance of ordinary microwave performance and occasional air-fry or convection cooking.

Skip it if: you only reheat food and do not want to learn combination-oven controls or store extra cookware.

2. Hamilton Beach 1.1 Cu. Ft. Countertop Microwave: Best value

The Hamilton Beach 1.1 cu. ft. microwave is the value pick for buyers who want a conventional microwave with a reasonably roomy cavity and uncomplicated controls. It provides 1.1 cubic feet of capacity, 1,000 watts, 10 power levels, a plus-30-seconds button, six cooking presets, and one-touch express buttons for one through six minutes.

Its popcorn preset performed reasonably well in Good Housekeeping’s testing: about one ounce of a 3.2-ounce bag remained unpopped. The more significant weakness was reheating consistency. Different areas of the same dinner plate reached substantially different temperatures, so you should stir, rotate, or rearrange leftovers halfway through heating when possible. Letting food stand briefly after cooking can also help the temperature equalize.

This is a better value proposition than a combination microwave if your routine consists of leftovers, frozen meals, beverages, vegetables, and popcorn. You are paying for a larger basic cavity and familiar microwave functions rather than air-fry hardware and oven accessories you may rarely use.

Choose it if: you want a relatively large, traditional microwave at a budget-oriented price.

Skip it if: you rely heavily on sensor cooking or want very uniform heating without stirring and rearranging food.

  • Push-button door release for easy access
  • Dimensions (W x D x H): 17.3” x 13” x 10.2”

3. Black + Decker Digital Countertop Microwave: Best compact

For dorm rooms, offices, apartments, and crowded kitchen counters, the Black + Decker compact microwave is the most space-conscious recommendation. It measures approximately 19.1 inches wide by 14.8 inches deep by 11.5 inches high, with a 0.9-cubic-foot interior, a 900-watt output, and a 10-inch turntable.

The compact size comes with predictable limitations. The lower output may take longer than a 1,000-watt model, and the small cavity will not comfortably accommodate large casserole dishes or wide dinner plates. Measure the dishes you use most often rather than assuming that a listed cubic-foot capacity tells the whole story.

Controls include 10 power levels, three programmable custom cooking presets, and standard programs for popcorn, potatoes, and frozen vegetables. Those custom buttons are useful if the microwave will live in an office or dorm where the same foods are prepared repeatedly.

Testing limitation: Good Housekeeping did not directly laboratory-test this specific Black + Decker model. Its recommendation was based on listed specifications, features, and the brand’s prior testing history. That makes this a specification-based compact pick, not a claim that this exact unit produced the same laboratory results as the directly tested models.

Choose it if: counter depth and width are more important than large-dish capacity or maximum speed.

Skip it if: you regularly heat family-size leftovers, large plates, or casserole dishes.

4. Panasonic HomeChef 4-in-1 Countertop Microwave Air Fryer Combo: Best multifunction model

The Panasonic HomeChef 4-in-1 microwave is for buyers deliberately combining several countertop appliances. It functions as a microwave, broiler, convection oven, and air fryer. Good Housekeeping reports that the HomeChef baked a nine-inch cake with convection and produced crispy chicken wings with its air-fry function.

Panasonic’s official quick-start guide documents inverter microwave operation, sensor reheat, Turbo Defrost, quiet mode, an air-fry basket, wire rack, enamel tray, and 21 preset programs. It lists convection temperatures from 215°F to 425°F and describes combination modes using microwave plus broil or microwave plus convection. Good Housekeeping also reports app compatibility and more than 20 presets.

The trade-off is physical and practical rather than a lack of capability. The rack, enamel tray, air-fry basket, and glass accessories need to be removed and stored elsewhere during ordinary microwave use. That takes cabinet space and adds handling before and after cooking. An appliance that can do four jobs is only a space saver if you actually use those jobs and have a sensible place to keep the accessories.

Because this is a convection and broil appliance as well as a microwave, it also needs more attention to placement and cleaning than a basic model. Follow the manual’s clearance, cookware, rack-position, and cleaning instructions, and do not assume that every accessory is dishwasher-safe or interchangeable with another Panasonic version.

Choose it if: you want a genuine microwave, convection oven, broiler, and air fryer in one countertop appliance.

5. GE JES1109RRSS Countertop Convection Microwave with Air Fry: Easiest to operate

The GE JES1109RRSS microwave is the best choice when visible, straightforward controls matter more than having the smallest or simplest appliance. Good Housekeeping highlighted its front-panel preset labeling, strong heat distribution, and a turntable that continues rotating without requiring exact placement on the support ring.

According to GE’s official product page, the JES1109RRSS has a 1.0-cubic-foot capacity, 1,050 watts of microwave output, 10 power levels, air-fry, convection, broil, auto and time defrost, preset controls, a supplied crisper pan, and a 12.4-inch glass turntable. Its listed dimensions are 11.875 inches high by 20.6 inches wide by 16.60 inches deep.

The GE’s accessible controls make it a particularly good fit for shared kitchens, older users, or anyone who does not want to decode interior preset charts. However, its multifunction design makes it more involved than a microwave-only model. Check that the 16.60-inch depth and door-opening area fit your counter before buying, and leave the manufacturer-specified ventilation space around it.

Choose it if: you want air-fry and convection functions with presets that are easy to find and understand.

Skip it if: you need a very shallow appliance or have no interest in oven-style cooking.

Good alternatives to the five featured picks

The five models above are a focused list, not the only good countertop microwaves. RTINGS’ broader testing of more than 30 microwaves points to several alternatives for buyers whose priorities differ from Good Housekeeping’s categories.

  • Breville the Smooth Wave: RTINGS identifies this as its best countertop microwave. It emphasizes tactile controls, a readable display, sensor cooking, a mute option, a soft-close door, and the ability to stop turntable rotation for large dishes. Consider it when you want a premium traditional microwave rather than an air-fry combination appliance.
  • Sharp SMC2266KS: RTINGS lists this as a powerful mid-range option with a large cavity and sensor cooking. It is worth considering when interior capacity matters more than compactness.
  • Sharp SMC1162HS: RTINGS identifies this as a fast budget model. It is a better direction for shoppers who want conventional microwave functions without paying for convection or air frying.
  • Toshiba EM131A5C-BS: RTINGS describes this as an affordable, quiet model with sensor cooking and a mute button. It is a sensible alternative when the Toshiba 7-in-1’s extra modes seem unnecessary.

RTINGS also cautions against choosing solely on wattage or small differences in evenness. Controls, cavity size, noise, sensor behavior, and day-to-day usability can matter just as much as the output figure.

How to choose the right countertop microwave

1. Measure the entire placement, not just the cavity

Before comparing features, measure the available counter width, depth, and height. Then check four additional details:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Door swing: Make sure the door can open fully without hitting a wall, cabinet, backsplash, or nearby appliance.
  • Ventilation: Countertop microwaves need the clearance specified in their manuals. Do not place one inside a tight cabinet or enclosed shelf unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that installation.
  • Outlet location: Confirm that the cord reaches the outlet without running across a hot surface or creating a trip hazard. Avoid using an extension cord unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically allow it.
  • Working space: Leave room to set down a hot bowl, remove a rack, or handle an air-fry basket safely.

Advertised interior capacity does not describe the full installation footprint. The GE’s 1.0-cubic-foot cavity, for example, sits in a unit listed at 20.6 inches wide and 16.60 inches deep. The Black + Decker’s approximately 19.1-by-14.8-by-11.5-inch exterior is more compact, but its 0.9-cubic-foot cavity and 10-inch turntable are smaller too.

  • SAFETY FIRST: The built-in child safety lock on the handle ensures the door doesn’t open accidentally, and you can disable the microwave control panel using the Lock Mode.

2. Pick traditional microwave-only operation or a combination appliance

Choose a traditional microwave-only model if your main tasks are reheating leftovers, defrosting meat, warming drinks, cooking frozen food, and making popcorn. The Hamilton Beach, Breville Smooth Wave, Sharp SMC1162HS, and Toshiba EM131A5C-BS are the more natural categories to consider. They generally involve fewer accessories and fewer modes to navigate.

Choose a combination model if you will regularly use air frying, convection baking, or broiling. The Toshiba, Panasonic HomeChef, and GE can consolidate appliances, but the benefit depends on your habits. If you never use the extra modes, the added controls, accessory storage, counter depth, and cleaning are costs without much practical return.

3. Treat wattage as a guide, not a complete ranking

Microwave output affects how quickly food heats, but it does not predict the whole experience. The listed picks range from 900 watts in the compact Black + Decker to 1,050 watts in the GE. Between those figures, cavity geometry, turntable behavior, power-level control, sensor programs, and heating consistency can make a larger difference than a modest wattage gap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recipes and package directions are often written around a particular power range. If your microwave heats more slowly, add time in short increments; if it heats faster, reduce the time and check food early. Stir or rotate dense foods, and use a food thermometer when safe cooking temperature matters.

4. Understand sensors and inverter systems

Sensor cooking uses moisture or humidity information to estimate when food is ready rather than relying only on a fixed timer. It can be convenient for reheating and common foods, but it is not a guarantee that every portion of a plate will be equally hot. Container shape, food density, starting temperature, and how evenly the food is distributed still matter.

Inverter systems are featured in the Toshiba and Panasonic recommendations. They are designed to provide more continuous power control than simply switching full power on and off. That can be useful for delicate or lower-power cooking, but it should not be treated as a promise of perfect results. Good placement, stirring, standing time, and an appropriate power level remain important.

5. Check the turntable and dish size

Capacity in cubic feet can be misleading if your usual dishes do not fit comfortably. Compare the turntable diameter with the plates, casserole dishes, and containers you actually use. The Black + Decker has a 10-inch turntable, while GE lists a 12.4-inch glass turntable for the JES1109RRSS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A turntable that rotates reliably helps distribute energy, but some models offer additional flexibility. RTINGS notes that the Breville Smooth Wave can stop turntable rotation for large dishes. GE’s review specifically highlights a design that continues rotating without requiring exact placement on the support ring.

6. Consider controls, noise, and shared-kitchen use

Look for a clear display, a dedicated plus-30-seconds key, accessible power-level controls, and a mute option if the microwave will be used early or late. A handle-operated door may be easier to use than a push button when the other hand is occupied. Front-panel preset labels, as on the GE, are easier to understand than codes printed inside the cavity, as on the Toshiba.

Chefman Countertop Microwave Oven 0.7 Cu. Ft., 700 Watts with 10 Power Levels, 6 Cooking Presets with One-Touch Express Cook, Child Safety Lock, & Mute Button - Black
  • EXTRA-QUICK COOKING: Choose from six popular presets for microwave ovens, including popcorn, pizza, beverages, veggies, potatoes, or leftovers. Or just press the number keys to quickly set the cook time for that number of minutes.
  • LOW TO HIGH POWER: This 700W digital microwave packs big power into a compact appliance! Choose from 10 power levels, from a low setting to melt butter to maximum power for rapid cooking in moments.
  • DIGITAL CONTROLS: It’s easy to set up everything from microwave popcorn to warming up leftovers in this mini microwave. Customize your time and power level or add a bit of extra time with the +30 seconds button.
  • SAFETY FIRST: The built-in child safety lock on the handle ensures the door doesn’t open accidentally. Just pull upwards on the top edge of the handle to open the microwave.
  • MUTE OPTION: Silence this counter top microwave with the Audio Button, turning off any annoying beeps if you’re trying to stay quiet or not wake up your kids.

Noise is difficult to judge from a specification sheet. RTINGS’ alternatives include the Toshiba EM131A5C-BS as a quiet option, while the five primary recommendations emphasize different priorities. If the microwave will sit beside a bedroom, workspace, or open-plan living area, look for a return policy that allows you to assess noise in your own room.

7. Plan for cleaning and accessory storage

A microwave-only model usually needs little more than regular wiping of the interior, door, and turntable according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Combination models add air-fry baskets, racks, trays, and grease or food residue from browning. Panasonic’s HomeChef is particularly capable, but its accessories need to be stored outside the oven during ordinary microwave use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying a replacement glass tray, turntable, rack, or air-fry basket, match the exact model number and dimensions. Accessories that look similar are not automatically compatible. Use only cookware and racks approved for the selected cooking mode, especially when switching between microwave, convection, broil, and air-fry operation.

Which microwave should you buy?

For the simplest everyday microwave: Start with the Hamilton Beach if value and capacity matter, or consider the Breville Smooth Wave, Sharp SMC1162HS, or Toshiba EM131A5C-BS if their respective control, speed, or quiet-operation advantages fit you better.

For the smallest practical footprint: Choose the Black + Decker, provided your largest usual dish fits its 10-inch turntable and 0.9-cubic-foot cavity.

For the most versatile appliance: Choose the Panasonic HomeChef if you will use all four cooking modes and have somewhere to store its accessories. The Toshiba is the better balanced alternative if you want combination cooking but prefer a more compact 1.0-cubic-foot format.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the easiest controls: Choose the GE JES1109RRSS. Its front-panel labeling, supplied crisper pan, and combination features make it the most approachable multifunction option in this group.

Recheck the exact model number, current price, dimensions, stock status, app compatibility, and warranty terms immediately before publication or purchase. Those details can change, and the Toshiba test-unit identifier remains the most important unresolved specification in this roundup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an air-fryer microwave better than a regular countertop microwave?

Only if you will use the extra functions. Air-fryer and convection models such as the Toshiba, Panasonic HomeChef, and GE JES1109RRSS can brown, crisp, bake, or broil food, but they generally take more counter space, require more accessories, and create more cleanup. For reheating, defrosting, drinks, and popcorn, a conventional model is usually simpler.

What wattage should a countertop microwave have?

A 900-watt model can work well for compact spaces, while 1,000 to 1,050 watts generally offers faster cooking. Wattage is not the only important factor: sensor behavior, cavity size, controls, noise, turntable design, and heating consistency also affect real-world performance. Adjust cooking time to your microwave rather than relying blindly on package directions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I choose a microwave by cubic-foot capacity alone?

No. Measure the exterior width, depth, and height, check the door swing and ventilation space, and compare the turntable diameter with your largest usual plate or casserole dish. The Black + Decker’s 0.9-cubic-foot cavity and 10-inch turntable are suitable for compact use but not large dishes, while GE lists a 12.4-inch turntable for the JES1109RRSS.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the Toshiba 7-in-1 for the best overall blend of microwave and oven-style functions, the Hamilton Beach for basic value, the Black + Decker for limited counter space, the Panasonic HomeChef for true four-in-one versatility, and the GE JES1109RRSS for the clearest controls. Confirm dimensions and the exact Toshiba model number before purchasing, and do not pay for convection or air frying unless you expect to use them.
