The 5 Best 4-Slice Toasters of 2026, Tested and Reviewed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick verdict: The Breville Die-Cast 4-Slice Smart Toaster is the strongest all-around choice in the current RTINGS comparison, thanks to excellent browning range, even toast, wide slots, and useful controls. Choose the Breville the “A Bit More” 4 Slice instead if you regularly toast sourdough, bakery loaves, or homemade bread. The Cuisinart CPT-1420 is the practical value pick, the SMEG TSF02 is best for retro styling and long slots, and the Bella 4-Slice Slim is the space-saving budget option.

There is an important distinction behind these rankings: a four-slice toaster may have four separate short slots, two long slots, or two independently controlled pairs of slots. That affects the bread you can use, whether two people can select different browning levels, and how much counter space the toaster needs.

At a glance

Best value Cuisinart 4 Slice Compact CPT-1420 Four-slot design Consistent basic toast without premium pricing Weak crumb-management score
Best retro design SMEG TSF02 Two extra-long slots Style, color choice, and long-slot flexibility Large footprint and poor crumb management
Best compact budget option Bella 4-Slice Slim Two long slots Small counters and low-cost four-slice capacity Slower and less even than the leading models

How these recommendations were evaluated

This article synthesizes current RTINGS testing with hands-on comparisons from Reviewed and buying-guide evaluations from BestReviews. The publisher did not independently test these toasters, so the wording below distinguishes third-party test results from manufacturer specifications.

RTINGS says it has tested more than 25 toasters and currently recommends the five four-slice models covered here. Its testing considers toast performance, browning range, speed, crumb management, everyday use, and size. Reviewed’s comparison tested four-slice models at light, medium, and heavy settings, including simultaneous four-slice toasting, bagels, English muffins, timing, evenness, controls, build quality, and general use. BestReviews uses a different buying-guide evaluation, which is why its preferred model is not identical to the current RTINGS winner.

The scores quoted below are published RTINGS score snapshots, not scores generated by this site. They are useful for comparing trade-offs, but they should not be interpreted as guarantees about durability, safety, or lifespan.

#1 Best Overall
Elite Gourmet 4-Slice Long Slot Toaster, 1.5" Wide Slots, 6 Browning Levels | Reheat, Defrost & Cancel, Built-In Warming Rack, Fits Bagels, Sourdough & Texas Toast, Stainless Steel, ECT-3100
  • EXTRA WIDE & LONG SLOTS FIT WHAT OTHER TOASTERS WON'T: Two long slots (10" × 1.5") fit full bagel halves flat, thick sourdough, Texas Toast, artisan loaves, English muffins, and waffles. Four full slices toast at once. Best results: always toast 2 slices per slot (one in each), with slices directly opposing each other for balanced heat distribution.
  • 6 BROWNING SETTINGS — FROM BARELY WARM TO PERFECTLY DARK: A full dial from Level 1 (light, barely warm) to Level 6 (deep, dark, crunchy) gives you genuine control over your toast. New toaster tip: run one empty cycle at your preferred setting before first use — this clears manufacturing residue and delivers the most even browning from day one.
  • REHEAT, DEFROST & CANCEL — THREE FUNCTIONS MOST TOASTERS SKIP: Reheat warms previously toasted bread at low heat without re-toasting or burning. Defrost goes straight from freezer to table in one cycle (great for frozen waffles, bagels, and French toast). One-touch Cancel stops and ejects immediately, anytime.
  • BUILT-IN WARMING RACK HEATS PASTRIES WHILE YOU TOAST: Push down the warming rack lever and the rack pops up, ready to warm croissants, buns, rolls, and pitas on top while bread toasts below. Everything arrives at the table warm at the same moment — a feature most toasters at this price simply don't include.
  • CORD STORAGE, SLIDE-OUT CRUMB TRAYS & HIGH-LIFT LEVER: The 36" cord wraps neatly into built-in base storage, keeping your counter clean. Slide-out crumb tray clicks out, empty in seconds, and clicks back in. The high-lift pop-up lever safely raises even small slices above the slot edge for easy retrieval. ETL certified. 1-Year Warranty backed by Elite Gourmet's US-based support team.

1. Breville Die-Cast 4-Slice Smart Toaster: best overall

Best for: households that want refined controls, wide bread compatibility, and a polished premium design.

The Breville Die-Cast 4-Slice Smart Toaster is RTINGS’ current best four-slice toaster tested. Its published scores include 8.0 for everyday use, 8.2 for toasting evenness, 10 for toasting range, 7.0 for speed, and 7.0 for crumb management. The standout result is the browning range: it gives you more useful adjustment between lightly warmed bread and deeply browned toast than many basic models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTINGS also reports that the slots are slightly wider, deeper, and longer than those on many competing toasters. That makes the Breville a flexible choice for bagels, thick bread, and taller slices, although it is still a four-short-slot design rather than a long-slot toaster.

Breville’s U.S. product information lists four extra-wide slots, variable browning control, automatic lowering, Bagel, Frozen, A Bit More, and Lift and Look functions. The toaster uses die-cast aluminum construction and has a removable front crumb tray. Its listed dimensions are approximately 10.9 inches wide, 11.9 inches deep, and 7.7 inches high.

Why buy it: It combines the strongest overall RTINGS results in this group with more accommodating slots and more useful everyday controls than a basic toaster.

Watch out for: This is a premium appliance. Breville’s U.S. page showed a listed price of $249.95 and an out-of-stock status when the research was captured; both price and availability need to be checked before ordering. The toaster also takes up more counter depth than its four-slice capacity alone might suggest.

Bottom line: Pick it when performance and control matter more than minimizing the purchase price. It is the safest recommendation for a mixed household that uses standard bread, thick slices, bagels, and frozen bread.

2. Breville the “A Bit More” 4 Slice: best for long or homemade bread

Best for: sourdough, bakery loaves, homemade bread, and other slices that are too long or awkward for ordinary short slots.

The Breville the “A Bit More” 4 Slice is a separate model from the Die-Cast 4-Slice Smart Toaster. Its defining feature is a pair of long slots that can accommodate slices from longer loaves without requiring you to trim or reposition the bread.

RTINGS gives this model scores of 7.7 for everyday use, 7.1 for toast, 7.1 for bagels, 7.5 for crumb management, and 6.4 for size. It retains useful Breville features including one-sided bagel toasting, Lift and Look, and A Bit More. RTINGS’ 2026 recommendations place this model in the upper-mid-range category, rather than treating it as the same product as the Die-Cast model.

BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Toaster with Extra-Wide Slots | Extra-wide slots, 7 shade settings, bagel mode and removable crumb tray for customized toasting.
  • EXTRA WIDE TOASTING SLOTS: Fits bagels, thick-cut bread, waffles, and more. Extra-wide self-centering slots adjust to different sizes for even toasting. Tip: Place taller slices vertically for best fit.
  • BAGEL FUNCTION WITH ADDED CONTROL: Use the Bagel button for a crisp cut side. Includes Frozen and Cancel buttons. Tip: Always press the lever down before selecting Bagel or Frozen modes for proper function.
  • EXTRA LIFT LEVER: Raise smaller items like English muffins for easy removal. The lift lever helps prevent burned fingers. Note: Lever locks down only when the toaster is plugged in.
  • EASY CLEAN CRUMB TRAY: Built-in drop-down crumb tray keeps your counter clean and reduces odor from burned crumbs. Located under the toaster. Let the unit cool before cleaning.
  • CUSTOM SHADE SELECTOR: Choose from 7 browning levels with the shade selector dial. Tip: Start with setting 4 on your first use to find your ideal shade, then adjust as needed for lighter or darker results.

Why buy it: Long slots are genuinely useful if your bread is often longer than a standard sandwich slice. A long-slot layout can toast two long slices or several smaller pieces without the exposed, untoasted strip that short slots may leave on oversized bread.

Watch out for: The long-slot format generally gives you fewer fully separate slot groups than four short slots. It also occupies a larger footprint, so measure the counter area rather than assuming that every four-slice toaster takes roughly the same space.

Bottom line: This is the better Breville for bread shape. Choose it over the Die-Cast model if long slices are a routine problem; choose the Die-Cast model if you value four separate short slots and the strongest overall published test results.

3. Cuisinart 4 Slice Compact CPT-1420: best value for consistent basic toast

Best for: shoppers who want four-slice capacity and good everyday toast without paying premium-appliance prices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Cuisinart CPT-1420 earns its value recommendation through solid basic toast performance rather than a long list of premium features. RTINGS records an 8.1 toast score, along with 6.9 for everyday use, 6.7 for bagels, 5.0 for crumb management, and 7.0 for size.

That 8.1 toast score is important: the CPT-1420 can be a sensible choice for someone who mainly wants evenly browned standard bread and does not need a luxury finish or unusually sophisticated controls. Its lower crumb-management result is the main practical compromise. Plan to empty and clean the tray regularly instead of treating this as a particularly low-maintenance model.

Why buy it: It concentrates the budget on the core job—making toast—while providing four-slice capacity. It is a better fit than a premium Breville if the household does not need specialized functions or a high-end enclosure.

Watch out for: Exact price, color availability, retailer stock, and warranty terms can change. Confirm the listing says CPT-1420; Cuisinart sells several four-slice toasters with similar names, including the CPT-540 and other Custom Select models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: The CPT-1420 is the practical pick when consistent standard toast matters more than premium convenience. Keep the crumb tray maintained, especially if the toaster is used daily.

4. SMEG TSF02: best retro design and long-slot versatility

Best for: buyers who consider the toaster part of the kitchen’s visual design and want long slots for varied bread sizes.

Proctor Silex 4 Slice Toaster with Extra Wide Slots For Bagels | Browning Control With 7 Shades | Auto Shutoff | Toast Boost | Slide-Out Crumb Tray | Cancel Button | White | 24215G
  • EFFORTLESSLY TOAST THICKER BREADS: Wider than the slots on many 4 slice toasters, the toast slots on this Hamilton Beach toaster are extra wide to easily fit thicker breads like Texas toast and bagels.
  • EASILY RETRIEVE SMALLER-SIZED BREADS: The Toast Boost feature on the 4 slice toaster lifts smaller breads like English muffins so they're easier to retrieve after toasting.
  • KEEP COUNTERTOPS CLEANER: Conveniently remove and discard crumbs from the bottom of the bread toaster with the pullout crumb tray, so they don't end up on your countertop.
  • CUSTOMIZE YOUR TOAST SHADE: Use the shade selector to make lighter or darker toast. Choose from 7 toast shades. Simply press the cancel button to stop the toast cycle and get your toast. No need to wait!
  • NEATLY STORES AWAY: The built-in cord wrap in the base of the toaster makes it easy to neatly store the toaster when it's not being used.

The SMEG TSF02 4-slice toaster uses two extra-long slots rather than four short slots. SMEG lists six browning levels, defrost, reheat, bagel functionality, automatic pop-up, a removable crumb tray, 1.4-inch slot width, 1,400 watts, and a 120-volt U.S. electrical specification.

The physical size is substantial: approximately 15.37 inches wide, 8.2 inches deep, and 8.39 inches high. That width is a major part of the buying decision. Measure the available surface, including room around the controls and space to remove the crumb tray, before choosing it for a small kitchen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTINGS records scores of 7.3 for everyday use, 7.3 for toast, 8.6 for bagels, 4.0 for crumb management, and 5.7 for size. The bagel result supports the TSF02’s appeal for that specific use, while the crumb-management and size scores expose its main compromises.

Why buy it: The TSF02 offers long-slot flexibility, recognizable retro styling, and a broad color range. It is a particularly attractive choice when the toaster will remain visible on the counter instead of being stored between uses.

Watch out for: It is not the best overall performer in the current RTINGS comparison. The large body and low crumb-management score are meaningful drawbacks, so do not pay for the appearance while expecting compact dimensions or effortless cleanup.

Bottom line: Buy the TSF02 for its design and long slots, not because it leads every performance category. It makes the most sense when appearance is a primary requirement and the counter has room for it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Bella 4-Slice Slim: best compact budget option

Best for: small kitchens, apartments, dorm-style spaces, and shoppers who prioritize footprint and price.

The Bella 4-Slice Slim uses two long slots in a narrow, space-conscious design. RTINGS characterizes it as a cheap, space-saving option that can handle longer slices, while its test results show where the savings appear: 6.4 for everyday use, 6.4 for toast, 5.5 for bagels, 5.0 for crumb management, and 7.9 for size.

Its size score is the appeal. The Bella can provide four-slice capacity without the broad footprint of many conventional four-slot toasters. The long slots also make it more accommodating of long slices than a compact toaster with four short openings.

Why buy it: It is a credible way to get four-slice capacity when counter space is the limiting factor. It also makes sense for occasional use when a premium speed or highly even browning is not worth the extra cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch out for: RTINGS found that it does not toast as evenly or as quickly as stronger alternatives. Its bagel and crumb-management scores are also modest. If the household makes toast several times a day, the slower performance may become more noticeable than the initial savings.

Strong alternatives worth considering

Zwilling Enfinigy Cool Touch 4-Slice Toaster

Reviewed selected the Zwilling Enfinigy Cool Touch 4-Slice Toaster as its best upgrade in an older hands-on comparison. Reviewed reported even slices and a cool exterior after repeated use, but also found it slow—taking more than four minutes in its test—and said the controls were not intuitive.

That makes the Zwilling a reasonable alternative for shoppers who value exterior temperature and design, but not an automatic replacement for the Breville. The comparison is based on a different, older hands-on test rather than the current RTINGS ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cuisinart CPT-540

Reviewed named the Cuisinart CPT-540 its best motorized four-slice toaster. Its comparison included light, medium, and heavy settings; simultaneous four-slot tests; bagels; English muffins; timing; evenness; ease of use; build quality; and overall experience.

Do not confuse the CPT-540 with the CPT-1420. They are separate models, and a recommendation for one should not be used as evidence about the other. Check the exact model number, controls, slot arrangement, and dimensions in the current listing.

Other buying-guide picks

BestReviews, in a buying guide updated in April 2026, selected the Cuisinart Four-Slice Custom Select Toaster as its best overall option. It highlighted seven shade settings, dual controls, stainless-steel construction, and food-specific settings. BestReviews also listed the Elite Gourmet Long Slot 4-Slice Toaster, BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Toaster, Cuisinart 4-Slice Compact Stainless Steel Toaster, and Bella 4-Slice Slim as category picks.

These results do not necessarily conflict with RTINGS. RTINGS publishes a standardized test comparison, Reviewed reports a separate hands-on comparison, and BestReviews presents a buying-guide evaluation. The right winner depends partly on whether you value measured toast performance, usability observations, design, price, or a specific slot layout.

How to choose the right four-slice toaster

Four short slots or two long slots?

Choose four short slots when two pairs of people frequently want different browning settings, or when you usually toast ordinary sandwich bread. Four separate openings can make the arrangement more intuitive, but they may struggle with slices from long bakery loaves.

Choose two long slots when the household regularly buys sourdough, artisan bread, homemade loaves, or oversized slices. Long slots are more flexible about bread length, but they may provide less independent control than four individually arranged slots. A nominal four-slice capacity does not guarantee four independently adjustable slices.

Prioritize independent controls for mixed preferences

If one person wants lightly browned toast while another wants a darker setting, look for independently controlled pairs or slots. Do not infer this from the phrase four-slice alone. Check the control layout and the manual or manufacturer specification for the exact model.

Look for a real bagel setting if you eat bagels often

A dedicated bagel mode generally focuses heat on one side of the bagel while warming the other. That is different from simply turning up the browning dial. The Breville models retain one-sided bagel functionality, and SMEG explicitly lists a bagel function for the TSF02. If bagels are only an occasional breakfast, this feature may not justify a higher price; if they are routine, it can be worth prioritizing.

  • LIMITED 3-YEAR WARRANTY: Refer to user manual for troubleshooting steps and questions surrounding warranty policies – this product is BPA free

Consider crumb management, but still clean safely

A removable crumb tray makes routine emptying easier, but it does not make a toaster maintenance-free. The RTINGS scores show meaningful differences: the Breville Die-Cast model scores 7.0 for crumb management, the Breville “A Bit More” scores 7.5, while the SMEG TSF02 scores 4.0 and both the Cuisinart CPT-1420 and Bella 4-Slice Slim score 5.0.

Unplug the toaster before cleaning and follow the model’s manual. Empty the crumb tray regularly, let the appliance cool, and never insert a knife, fork, or other metal object into a slot. A crumb tray is a convenience feature, not a substitute for safe handling.

Measure the counter, not just the cabinet space

Four-slice toasters vary substantially in footprint. The Breville Die-Cast model is approximately 10.9 by 11.9 by 7.7 inches, while the SMEG TSF02 is approximately 15.37 inches wide by 8.2 inches deep by 8.39 inches high. The long-slot Breville is also larger than the standard four-slot design, according to RTINGS. Bella’s strength is its compact profile, but verify the current dimensions before buying.

Measure the usable counter area with the toaster’s controls accessible. Leave room for the plug, ventilation, bread removal, and crumb-tray access. A toaster that technically fits under a cabinet may still be inconvenient if it must be moved every time you use it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Availability and price: what to verify before buying

Prices, retailer stock, colors, seller identity, and warranty terms are volatile. They should be checked at publication and again before checkout. In particular, the Breville Die-Cast model’s U.S. product page showed a $249.95 listed price and an out-of-stock status during the research capture; that is historical research context, not a current price or availability promise.

Also verify the exact model number. Cuisinart’s CPT-1420, CPT-540, and Custom Select models are not interchangeable recommendations. The SMEG TSF02 is a two-long-slot toaster, while a similarly named four-slot model may have a different layout. Confirm the U.S. voltage specification when buying from an international seller; the SMEG TSF02 specification cited here is 120 volts for the United States.

Who should buy a four-slice toaster?

A four-slice toaster is worthwhile when the household regularly makes multiple servings at once, wants to avoid running two cycles, or needs enough capacity for family breakfasts. It can also be more convenient in a shared kitchen where different people use different browning preferences.

It is not automatically the best choice for a small household. Four-slice models generally use more counter space, and a two-slice toaster may be more sensible if only one or two slices are made at a time. The exception is a compact long-slot model such as the Bella, where the bread-shape flexibility or narrow footprint may matter more than the nominal capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are four-slice toasters worth it?

They are worthwhile for households that regularly toast several servings at once or want to finish breakfast in one cycle. They are less compelling for one-person or occasional use if counter space is limited. Compare the footprint and control layout, not just the four-slice label.

Are long-slot toasters better for sourdough?

Usually, yes. Two long slots can accommodate slices from sourdough, bakery, or homemade loaves that may not fit fully in short slots. The trade-off is that a long-slot toaster may offer less independent control than a four-short-slot design, so choose based on both bread shape and household preferences.

How much counter space do four-slice toasters need?

There is no single standard footprint. The Breville Die-Cast model is approximately 10.9 by 11.9 by 7.7 inches, while the SMEG TSF02 is approximately 15.37 inches wide by 8.2 inches deep by 8.39 inches high. The long-slot Breville also takes more space than its standard four-slot counterpart. Always check the exact model’s dimensions and allow room for controls, ventilation, the plug, and crumb-tray access.

What is the difference between four slices and four slots?

Four slices describes capacity, not necessarily the physical design. A toaster may use four short slots, two long slots that hold two slices each, or two independently controlled pairs. Four short slots can offer more separation between slices, while two long slots are usually better for oversized or irregular bread.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the Breville Die-Cast 4-Slice Smart Toaster for the strongest all-around performance and control. Choose the Breville the “A Bit More” 4 Slice for long bread, the Cuisinart CPT-1420 for dependable value, the SMEG TSF02 for retro design, and the Bella 4-Slice Slim when counter space and price matter most. Before ordering, confirm the exact model, slot layout, dimensions, current price, stock, seller, and warranty.
