In BHG’s testing, the Beaumont earned praise for its appearance, clear instructions, predrilled holes, and sturdy hardware. It remained stable through rain, snow, and strong wind. The test also exposed two details worth planning for: the open trellis roof provides only partial, dappled shade, and the cedar will need a protective sealant or stain as it weathers. The multi-piece rafter construction is functional but may look less refined up close than a fully continuous beam.

BHG tested a PURPLE LEAF model on a concrete patio and found that the finished pergola looked better than its low price suggested. Assembly took nearly six hours in the test, not the kind of quick one-hour project some listings imply. The kit arrived in a heavy single box with labeled components and basic tools, but the supplied wrenches were not especially useful. Some holes were filled with paint, and a few screws were difficult to align.
The canopy fabric is UV-resistant, fade-resistant, and water-repellent rather than a solid waterproof roof. It can handle sun and light rain, but it should not be treated like a hardtop pavilion. BHG also noted that the frame is relatively light and can rattle in wind. That is a reminder that the anchoring method matters as much as the frame material—especially on concrete, pavers, or an exposed deck.
There is some size ambiguity across retailer listings and versions of this product. BHG’s test notes describe a smaller model, while current listings also show a 12 × 16-foot version with a retractable canopy. For example, Home Depot lists a 12 × 16-foot model. Do not assume the test result, dimensions, canopy color, or included lighting applies to every PURPLE LEAF SKU.

The limitation is shade. The Kingston has open rafters and no retractable canopy, so it provides visual structure and some filtered shade rather than full sun or rain protection. It works best over a bistro set, garden seating, or a small patio—not over a large outdoor kitchen or full dining table.

1. Match the roof to the protection you actually need
