Those recommendations come from BHG’s at-home testing of 10 models, not a controlled laboratory comparison. The best choice depends on where you need it, how it catches insects, and how much upkeep you’re willing to do.
How BHG chose its four mosquito traps
BHG says it set up 10 models in its own yards and assessed mosquito-catching effectiveness, ease of use and cleaning, durability, and overall value. Testers assembled units where needed, placed them for use, observed insect capture and whether the insects were killed, and considered cleaning and maintenance. Outdoor traps were exposed to wind, rain, and extended sunlight.

The published account does not describe controlled laboratory conditions or a standardized mosquito challenge, so its results are best read as practical, at-home observations rather than a guarantee of performance in every yard. BHG’s article was updated April 10, 2026: The 4 Best Mosquito Traps, Tested by BHG.
Compare the four picks
| Pick | Where it fits | How it works | Coverage and placement | Upkeep and tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DynaTrap LED Mosquito Trap Best overall |
Indoor or outdoor, according to BHG’s product details | UV light attracts flying insects into a trap | Listed for up to half an acre; BHG found the power cord short enough to require an extension cord in its setup | BHG observed about 10 mosquitoes over 24 hours, along with other flying insects; it was not yet peak mosquito season |
| Zevo Flying Insect Trap Best indoor |
Indoor | UV light attracts insects to an adhesive cartridge | BHG describes its range as small; multiple units may be needed for whole-home coverage | Replace and discard the cartridge for cleanup; it also caught gnats and flies |
| Tougher Than Tom Mosquito TNT 2.0 Best liquid trap |
Outdoor | Liquid bait attracts mosquitoes into the trap | BHG does not state a coverage figure | Setup took about 15 minutes in BHG’s test; replace bait every 30 days and avoid contact with it |
| PIC Solar Insect Killer Torch Best torch |
Outdoor | Solar-powered zapper kills insects on contact | Listed for up to half an acre; can be used on a tabletop or stake | BHG found the taller stakes flimsy and unstable in wind; it was nearly silent in use |
Coverage figures are product details reported by BHG, not a promise that every device will protect that entire area in real conditions. Wind, placement, competing light and the number of mosquitoes nearby can affect what a trap catches.

Which trap best matches your space?
For an outdoor sitting area: DynaTrap LED Mosquito Trap
BHG selected the lantern-like DynaTrap as its overall winner because its UV light and design suited outdoor sitting areas. During the test it caught an average of around 10 mosquitoes in 24 hours, as well as other flying insects. That is one BHG test observation, not a typical daily catch rate: the testers noted that it was not yet peak mosquito season. Check where an outlet is available before choosing this corded option; BHG needed an extension cord because the supplied cord was short.
For indoor flying insects: Zevo Flying Insect Trap
The Zevo uses an adhesive cartridge rather than a zapper. BHG valued the cleanup: remove and dispose of the cartridge instead of handling dead insects. Its small range is the key limitation, so one unit may not cover a whole home. BHG also saw it catch gnats and flies, which may be useful in a room with more than one kind of flying-insect nuisance.
Rank #2
- Catch Flying Insects 24/7: This plug-in flying insect trap uses blue & UV light to attract and catch house flies, fruit flies, gnats, and flying pests. Its continuous attraction helps catch insects day and night for everyday indoor flying pest control.
- No-Mess Adhesive Cartridge: Disposable glue cartridge works like bug sticky traps by holding trapped insects hidden on the wall-facing adhesive pad, while the no-mess tab makes cartridge removal simple when it is time to toss and replace.
- Spray-Free, Zap-Free, Odor-Free Design: This quiet fly trap helps quickly and continuously control small flying insects indoors without spraying, zapping or added odors, making it a discreet everyday option in kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms, enclosed patios, and other indoor spaces.
- Family-Friendly Fly Trap: Safe for use around children and pets when used as directed.* Works best placed near the source - fruit bowls, trash bins and indoor plants, where flying insects and fungus gnats gather.
- Year-Round Indoor Fly Control: Blinking blue light reminds you to check the cartridge every six weeks. Includes 1 device & 1 cartridge for everyday fly control in your kitchen and home. Stock up on refills or choose a Value Pack to keep a fly catcher in every room.
For an outdoor bait approach: Tougher Than Tom Mosquito TNT 2.0
This liquid-bait trap took about 15 minutes to set up in BHG’s test, where testers observed mosquitoes and flies entering the liquid. Its maintenance is recurring: BHG says to replace the bait every 30 days. Keep the bait away from skin and follow the product’s directions for handling and placement.

BHG’s pick comes as a solar-powered two-pack and can be configured for tabletop use or set on stakes. It killed mosquitoes and other flying insects and operated nearly silently during testing. The taller stakes are a meaningful placement drawback: BHG found them flimsy and unstable in wind, so a more sheltered or tabletop position may be preferable.
Rank #3
- BACKYARD MOSQUITO PROTECTION: Use the mosquito killer outdoors on the ground in a level shaded location near bushes, trees, or other secluded areas of your yard for lasting defense that keeps working and reduces the amount of mosquitoes over time
- OUTDOOR MOSQUITO CONTROL: Stops the breeding cycle at its source by using technology backed by scientific research to mimic natural mosquito breeding sites to lure mosquitoes in through a contained and targeted approach (Aedes and Culex spp)
- KILL & PREVENT: Kill adult mosquitoes in 9 days and their larvae in the station and other places they lay eggs, preventing new mosquitoes from developing; provides more comprehensive control than traps, repellents, or repellers (Aedes and Culex spp)
- HASSLE-FREE AND EASY TO USE: Quiet and effective mosquito control without flames, sprays, or batteries - just set-up per directions using a refill band and water, replace the band every 30 days, and check water level periodically to refill as needed
- LARGE PROTECTION ZONE: Ortho Home Defense Mosquito Kill & Prevent protects up to 4,300 sq. ft. against mosquitoes and larvae (Aedes and Culex spp)
Understand what each type of trap does
- UV capture traps attract insects with light and collect them. The DynaTrap and Zevo use this approach; the Zevo’s adhesive cartridge is also the collection surface.
- Zappers kill insects on contact. The PIC torch is a zapper, and zappers may kill many kinds of insects rather than selectively targeting mosquitoes. Some mosquitoes may be caught incidentally.
- Liquid-bait traps use bait to draw mosquitoes into a trap. The TNT 2.0 is the liquid option among these four picks.
A trap manages some adult insects near the device; it does not remove breeding sites. Nor should a trap and a repellent be assumed to work better together: Chrystal Swinger, Environmental Health Director for Mecklenburg County Public Health in Charlotte, North Carolina, told BHG that overlapping strategies can conflict. “When people want to use citronella candles to repel mosquitoes, but they also want to collect them in a trap, it ends up being a conflict of intent,” she said.
Reduce mosquitoes at the source first
Dumping standing water is often the more direct first step because mosquitoes breed in it. Swinger told BHG: “It’s more cost effective and efficient to prevent mosquitoes from breeding than it is to try to control them as adults.” She also explained: “Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so the key is locating the water that they’re using to breed and simply dump it out.” Check places where water can collect, empty what you find, and keep doing so rather than relying on an adult trap to solve the source.
Rank #4
- Dual Function Bug Zapper: This TIENBE Flying Insect Trap not only attracts and catches flying pests like mosquitoes and fruit flies with its UV light and glue boards but also doubles as a gentle night light. Perfect for creating a pest-free environment while you sleep.
- Super Grabber: This sticky glue trap quickly captures pests and insects for easy monitoring and removal. The package includes 1 White trap and 6 adhesive sheets that can be replaced at any time. You can use this indoor insect catcher in living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, dining rooms, bathrooms, and yards.
- EFFECTIVE UV FLY TRAP: This fly trap from TIENBE utilizes dual wavelengths of 365nm and 395nm to increase mosquito and fruit fly capture rates by 80%. Its clever design increases the phototropism of insects, attracting them to the glue board.
- Silent Mosquito Killing Device: Unlike traditional zappers, this TIENBE Bug Zapper utilizes glue boards to capture flying insects without any odors. It's safe, noise-free, and comes with prolonged use. Protect your eyes and sleep peacefully without the buzz of mosquitoes.
- Smart Night Light Mode: With two LED beads, this Flying Insect Trap offers smart and night light modes for versatile use. The device automatically detects ambient light levels in smart mode, while the night mode provides continuous illumination. Ideal for keeping your room insect-free and well-lit during nighttime hours.
BHG attributes to Swinger the estimate that an egg can develop into a flying adult in seven to 10 days. The publication also cautions that traps may help manage adult mosquitoes but are unlikely to cause significant damage to the mosquito population as a whole; this is an expert observation reported by BHG, not a population-control result from BHG’s trap test.

Are mosquito traps safe?
BHG says traps can be safe when used correctly, but safety depends on the specific model and following its instructions. Keep electrical components away from chewing pets, and observe any product-specific directions about children, pets, and included chemicals. For the TNT 2.0, BHG specifically advises avoiding contact with the liquid bait. Do not treat a general safety statement as a substitute for the label or manual for the exact model.

How much should I expect to pay for mosquito traps?
BHG’s four listed traps ranged from around $20 to $90 in its updated article. That is a reported range, not a current quote: prices, stock, exact model versions, and replacement-part costs can change. Factor in ongoing cartridge or bait purchases as well as the initial price; BHG specifies a 30-day replacement interval for the TNT 2.0 bait and notes that Zevo’s adhesive cartridge needs replacing when used.
Quick Recap
What upkeep should you plan for?
- For Zevo, check the adhesive cartridge and replace it when it is full or no longer useful; the cartridge makes disposal simpler but is a recurring consumable.
- For the TNT 2.0, replace the liquid bait every 30 days as BHG advises, and avoid direct contact.
- For outdoor models, choose a stable position and check the manufacturer’s directions for weather exposure and electrical safety. BHG’s observations of outdoor durability are limited to its own test conditions.
