They combine a comfortable non-slip grip, precise scalloped tips, a useful locking mechanism, and dishwasher-safe construction. However, they are not appropriate for nonstick cookware because their stainless-steel tips can scratch coated surfaces.
For other jobs, the Winco UT-12 is the better all-metal choice, the HOTEC 9- and 12-inch set offers the best value for nonstick cookware, and the Misen 13-inch tongs provide the extra reach that grilling and large pans require.
This guide draws on testing reported by Food Network and Yahoo Shopping. ResearchCore did not conduct a new hands-on test, so the testing claims below are attributed to those publishers rather than presented as original testing.

1. OXO Good Grips Stainless-Steel Locking Tongs, 12 inches: Best overall
Best for: everyday cooking in stainless-steel, cast-iron, and other uncoated cookware.
The OXO Good Grips stainless-steel locking tongs are the most balanced choice for cooks who want one pair for turning meat, lifting vegetables, serving pasta, and handling food in a skillet. Yahoo Shopping named them its best overall kitchen tongs, and Food Network also selected the 12-inch OXO model as its best overall pick after testing 17 leading models.
#1 Best Overall
- Great for turning and lifting vegetables
- Versatile for cooking, tossing and transferring food
- Tongs lock closed for convenient storage
- Sturdy, brushed stainless steel construction
- Scalloped edges securely hold food
Food Network’s reported tests included dredging and cooking chicken cutlets, lifting a rotisserie chicken, and cleaning each pair according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The publication praised the OXO’s comfortable non-slip grip, slightly scalloped edge, flat closing profile, and ability to hold slippery food without piercing it. Those features matter more in daily use than a long list of specialized extras: the tips can make controlled contact with food, while the 12-inch length gives useful clearance from a hot pan without becoming unusually cumbersome.

OXO lists stainless-steel construction, a locking design, a non-slip grip, and dishwasher compatibility on its official product page. The product is marketed as 12 inches long. OXO’s separate dimensions field lists 14 by 1 by 2 inches, which appears to describe the full listing or packaged product dimensions; it should not be treated as 14 inches of usable tong reach.
The major drawback is cookware compatibility. Stainless-steel tips can scratch nonstick coatings. Use these with bare stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel, glass, or other cookware where metal utensils are acceptable—not with a coated nonstick pan. If you mainly cook with nonstick cookware, choose the HOTEC set below or another silicone- or nylon-tipped model instead.
2. Winco UT-12 Stainless Steel Utility Tongs, 12 inches: Best metal tongs
Best for: high-heat cooking, commercial-style kitchens, and shoppers who prioritize sturdy all-metal construction over cushioning.
The Winco UT-12 stainless steel tongs are a straightforward, inexpensive alternative to the OXO. Yahoo Shopping selected Winco’s 12-inch heavyweight stainless-steel tongs as its best metal pick. Winco’s official product page identifies the model as UT-12 and specifies commercial-grade 0.9-millimeter stainless steel, a heavy-duty coiled spring, scalloped edges, and dishwasher-safe construction.

The all-metal design is well suited to high-heat tasks where silicone tips may be less desirable, such as turning food in a hot stainless-steel or cast-iron pan. The scalloped edges give the tips purchase on food, and the simple spring construction avoids adding silicone parts that can wear, split, or retain grease. Winco also offers the UT-12 in a 16-inch size and other lengths, although the 12-inch version is the more versatile everyday size.
Rank #2
- Versatile for cooking, tossing and transferring food
- Tongs lock closed for convenient storage
- Sturdy, brushed stainless steel construction
- Scalloped edges securely hold food
- Soft, comfortable, non-slip grips and thumb rests
This is a recommendation for simplicity and construction—not a promise that the tongs cannot bend or fail. The available official information supports the material thickness and spring design, but it does not establish a laboratory durability result or a guaranteed service life.
As with the OXO, keep the Winco away from nonstick cookware. Its metal tips can scratch coated surfaces. It is also less comfortable and polished than the OXO for some users because the priority is functional all-stainless construction rather than a cushioned, ergonomic grip.
3. HOTEC Stainless Steel Locking Tongs with Silicone Tips: Best silicone-tipped value
Best for: nonstick cookware, small kitchens, and anyone who wants two useful lengths for a low price.
The HOTEC silicone-tipped tongs set includes 9- and 12-inch tongs. Yahoo Shopping named this two-piece set its best silicone-tong value pick and reported a $9 Amazon price on May 12, 2026. The shorter pair is convenient for serving and close stovetop work; the longer pair gives more clearance around a pan or grill.
According to HOTEC’s product page, the set has stainless-steel bodies, silicone tips, cushioned silicone handles, a pull-ring locking mechanism, a hanging loop, and dishwasher-safe construction. HOTEC says the tips are heat-resistant to up to 248°C, approximately 478°F. That is a manufacturer-stated rating, not an independently verified test result, so treat it as a specification rather than a guarantee for every cooking situation.
The silicone tips are the right reason to buy this set: they are intended to be gentler on coated nonstick surfaces than exposed stainless steel. The trade-off is control. Food Network’s testing found the general difference between materials clearly: silicone tips protect cookware but can feel more flexible than metal, particularly when moving heavy or stubborn food. Nylon tips can offer a middle ground, with more stiffness than silicone while remaining suitable for many nonstick pans.
Rank #3
- Two pairs of tongs, sized—and priced—just right for your culinary needs
- 12-inch and 9-inch tongs for cooking, tossing and transferring food
- Tongs lock closed for convenient storage
- Sturdy, brushed stainless steel construction
- Scalloped edges securely hold food
The HOTEC set is therefore best understood as a value and versatility pick, not the most precise or demonstrably durable pair available. The research provides no independent long-term durability testing for this exact set. For ordinary nonstick cooking and serving, however, two lengths at a low purchase price make it practical.

Best for: grilling, searing, large pans, and cooks who want additional reach.
The Misen 13-inch tongs are the best choice here when the main problem is getting closer to a grill or farther into a large pan without putting your hand over the heat. Yahoo Shopping selected Misen’s 13-inch silicone tongs as its best grilling pick and reported a $19 Amazon price in May 2026.
Misen’s official product page lists stainless-steel construction, silicone grips, optional silicone tips, a spring-loaded hinge, dishwasher-safe care, and heat resistance up to 450°F. The listed total length for the 13-inch version is 13.9 inches, and its listed weight is 10 ounces. Misen also states that the tongs have a lifetime warranty against defects.
The optional silicone tips give the Misen a useful degree of flexibility: use the appropriate configuration for the cookware and task, rather than assuming every use requires exposed metal. The length is also useful for searing in a wide skillet or working over a larger cooking surface.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThere are two important limitations. First, 13 inches takes more drawer space and can feel less nimble than a 9- or 12-inch pair for serving or close stovetop work. Second, the 450°F rating is a published product limit, not a temperature target. A hot grill grate or a localized contact point can exceed that temperature, so do not assume the tongs are safe for unlimited grill temperatures simply because they are marketed for grilling.

- Versatile for cooking, tossing and transferring food

- Sturdy, brushed stainless steel construction
- Scalloped edges securely hold food
- Soft, comfortable, non-slip grips and thumb rests
How to choose the right kitchen tongs
Start with your cookware
- Stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel, and other uncoated cookware: metal tips provide the most rigid control. The OXO or Winco are the strongest fits.
- Nonstick or other coated cookware: choose silicone or nylon tips to reduce the risk of scratching. The HOTEC set is the value-oriented choice in this lineup.
- Mixed cookware: silicone-tipped tongs are the safer one-pair compromise, while metal tongs remain preferable when maximum rigidity and high-heat contact matter most.
Choose the length for the job
- 9 inches: compact, easy to control, and convenient for serving or close stovetop work.
- 12 inches: the most useful general-purpose size for everyday cooking.
- 13 to 16 inches: better for grills, deep pans, and keeping hands farther from heat, but less compact to store.
Longer is not automatically better. Extra reach adds leverage and can make delicate turning less precise. If you rarely grill, a 12-inch pair is usually easier to live with. If you regularly use a large grill or deep roasting pan, the additional reach is worthwhile.
Compare tip materials
| Tip material | Strengths | Weaknesses | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel | Rigid control; suitable for high heat and heavy food | Can scratch nonstick coatings | Cast iron, stainless steel, grilling, heavy foods |
| Silicone | Gentler on coated cookware; commonly comfortable to handle | Can flex more than metal under load; temperature limits vary | Nonstick cookware and general home use |
| Nylon | More rigid than silicone while remaining suitable for many coated pans | Still has a stated heat limit and may not feel as strong as metal | A middle ground for nonstick cookware |
For a specific nylon alternative, OXO’s official nylon-head model is listed as dishwasher-safe and rated to 400°F. That model was not one of the four primary winners here, but it illustrates why nylon can be attractive when silicone feels too flexible and metal feels too risky for a coated pan. Check the manufacturer’s heat rating for any nylon or silicone model before using it over high heat.
Do you need a locking mechanism?
A lock keeps the arms closed for storage and can make a pair easier to hang or fit into a crowded drawer. OXO, HOTEC, Misen, and Rösle all document locking or storage mechanisms. It is a useful convenience, but it should not be treated as proof of long-term reliability: the available sources do not establish failure rates for these mechanisms.
What the published testing looked at
Food Network reports testing 17 leading 12-inch models. Its evaluation included heat resistance, arm and tip materials, grip shape, locking mechanisms, handling chicken cutlets, lifting a rotisserie chicken, and cleanup according to manufacturer instructions. The findings support the most important buying distinction: metal gives more rigid control, while silicone protects coated cookware at the cost of some flexibility; nylon sits between the two.
Yahoo Shopping reports researching hundreds of pairs, narrowing the field, and testing finalists at home. Its category-based results are more useful than declaring one universal winner: the best everyday tongs, best metal tongs, best silicone value, and best grilling tongs serve different cooking situations.
Alternatives worth watching
Material The Only Tongs is a relevant premium, design-focused alternative and was identified as a splurge pick by Food Network. Material’s tools page showed it out of stock during research, so it is not a primary recommendation or current buy link here.
Best Value
- Ideal for grilling and turning large cuts of meat
- Versatile for cooking, tossing and transferring food
- Tongs lock closed for convenient storage
- Sturdy, brushed stainless steel construction
- Scalloped edges securely hold food
For readers shopping outside the United States, Rösle locking tongs are another premium long-reach option. Rösle’s official page lists a 40-centimeter model at €38.95; price, shipping, and availability depend on market.
Cuisinart 12-inch silicone tongs are a branded nonstick-friendly alternative. Cuisinart lists a $19.99 price and lifetime warranty, but this model was not selected as one of the four primary picks.
Care and safe-use checklist
- Use stainless-steel tips only on cookware that permits metal utensils.
- Use silicone or nylon tips on nonstick cookware, and replace them if the material becomes split, loose, or badly worn.
- Respect the manufacturer’s heat rating. A 450°F or 478°F claim is not permission to expose the tongs to unlimited grill or burner temperatures.
- Keep long grilling tongs away from direct flame unless their instructions specifically permit that use.
- Lock tongs closed for storage if the mechanism works smoothly; do not force a jammed pull-ring or hinge.
- Follow the manufacturer’s dishwasher instructions. All four primary picks are described by their manufacturers as dishwasher-safe, but harsh cycles and prolonged heat can eventually affect finishes or soft components.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are stainless-steel tongs safe for nonstick pans?
Not generally. Stainless-steel tips can scratch nonstick coatings, so use silicone- or nylon-tipped tongs instead. The OXO and Winco picks are better suited to uncoated stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel, and similar cookware.
What length of kitchen tongs is best?
Twelve inches is the most versatile everyday length. Choose 9 inches for compact serving and close stovetop work, or 13 to 16 inches for grilling, deep pans, and extra distance from heat.
Are silicone tongs better than metal tongs?
Neither is universally better. Silicone is gentler on nonstick cookware, while metal is generally more rigid and better for heavy food and high-heat work. Nylon can provide a compromise between surface protection and stiffness.
Can the Misen tongs be used on a very hot grill?
Use the manufacturer’s published 450°F rating as a ceiling, not a target. Grill grates and localized contact points can exceed that temperature, so follow Misen’s instructions and avoid assuming unlimited high-temperature safety.
The Bottom Line
Buy the OXO Good Grips 12-inch stainless-steel locking tongs for the best all-purpose performance on uncoated cookware. Choose the Winco UT-12 if you want simpler commercial-style all-metal construction, the HOTEC two-piece set for inexpensive nonstick-friendly versatility, or the Misen 13-inch tongs when grilling reach matters most. The key decision is not the brand name—it is matching the tip material and length to your cookware and cooking surface.
