For most home cooks making corn tortillas, the Victoria 8-inch cast-iron press is the strongest all-around choice in the tests covered here: Reviewed’s 2024 guide reported that its weight helped produce thin, even tortillas with little effort. If you prefer wood and can accommodate a bulkier tool, Central Coast Woodworks’ hardwood press is a credible alternative. For premium metal construction and reported control over thickness, consider the Doña Rosa x Masienda press.

These recommendations reflect the named publishers’ tests, not a combined head-to-head test. Their methods and product lineups differ, and current prices and availability are not established here.

Which tortilla press should you choose?

Press Best fit What the cited guides reported Considerations
Victoria 8-inch cast-iron press Most cooks seeking a well-rounded press for corn tortillas Reviewed named it Best Overall in its 2024 guide; its tester reported that the heavy press stayed in place and made thin, even tortillas with little effort. Epicurious discussed it as a budget cast-iron option in 2021. Weighs more than eight pounds according to Reviewed; cast iron needs careful drying and rust-preventive care.
Central Coast Woodworks hardwood press Those who prefer a handcrafted wood press and have storage space Reviewed and Saveur reported even, uniform pressing; Saveur named the red oak and walnut model its best overall in 2022. Reviewed and Saveur noted bulk and higher cost as drawbacks. Confirm the exact model and current listing.
Doña Rosa x Masienda press Those seeking a premium metal press with thickness control Epicurious called it top of class in 2021 after its author made hundreds of tortillas, citing smooth operation and control. Saveur listed it as its best metal option and identified powder-coated iron. Epicurious noted cleanup challenges around textured parts; the cited guides do not establish current price or availability.

What the tests found

Victoria: weight does the work

Reviewed’s guide, displayed as updated May 2, 2024, says its professional-chef tester evaluated six presses and selected the Victoria 8-inch cast-iron model as Best Overall. The tester reported that it stayed put during pressing and that the plates’ weight helped make thin, even tortillas without much effort. The plate design also helped contain dough when a ball was not perfectly centered. Epicurious’s 2021 guide separately included the Victoria as a budget cast-iron choice.

This makes the Victoria a sensible starting point if ease and consistent results matter more than a light, compact tool. Its substantial weight is also a storage and handling consideration.

Central Coast Woodworks: a spacious, traditional alternative

Reviewed reported that the 8-inch red oak and walnut press produced thin, uniform tortillas on the first press and kept the handle raised while loading. Saveur’s 2022 roundup named that hardwood model its best overall, praising even pressing and its handcrafted build. Both guides flagged the trade-off: wood presses take up space, and the model was described as expensive. Check that a listing is for the same red oak and walnut model before comparing it with these findings.

Doña Rosa x Masienda: premium metal and control

In Epicurious’s June 2021 guide, the author pressed 25 corn tortillas per press and called this collaboration top of class, valuing its smooth movement and control over thickness. Saveur described it as a powder-coated iron press and named it its best metal option. Epicurious also found its textured parts harder to clean and advised washing when needed, drying thoroughly, and oiling it like cast iron. Those older reviews do not establish current retail price or availability.

How to read the rankings

The guides did not test identical products using one shared protocol, so their winners are not a single universal ranking. Each selection is best understood as that publisher’s recommendation for its own comparison.

  • Reviewed: Its tester made corn-tortilla dough from two cups of masa harina, half a teaspoon of salt, and one and a half cups of warm water; divided it into one-ounce balls; and pressed five tortillas per model. A cut plastic bag lined each press, with parchment also cited as an option. Tortillas were cooked on a preheated cast-iron skillet, flipped every 30 seconds for two minutes. The guide assessed effort, first-press size, thickness, evenness, spillage, taste, and texture across six presses.
  • Epicurious: Its 2021 comparison pressed 25 corn tortillas per model using a cut freezer bag. The author observed force, handle comfort, and sturdiness, and tested cleanup with dry masa harina and wet dough left to cake. Ease of use, durability, cleaning, footprint, cost, and appearance also informed the comparison.
  • Food Network: Its guide, updated February 28, 2025, says it tested ten presses and narrowed its picks to five. Those publisher-specific picks included Masienda Doña Rosa overall, Victoria for smoothness, Central Coast Woodworks for wood, ARC USA for value, and Verve Culture for small kitchens. Food Network described the compact Verve option as suited to small, street-taco-size tortillas; its smaller output and lay-flat form may not suit every cook.

Because the guides are from different years and do not provide a common price or availability check, compare current listings separately rather than treating any historical price or ranking as a current market-wide result.

Alpha Living Tortilla Press – 8 Inch Cast Iron Quesadilla Maker – Heavy Duty Empanada Maker Press – Cast Iron Tortilla Maker for Kitchen, Home Use
  • HOMEMADE TORTILLAS, YOUR WAY — Prepare fresh dough rounds for taco nights, family meals, and your favorite homemade recipes with the ALPHA LIVING 8-inch tortilla press.
  • CAST IRON CONSTRUCTION — A substantial cast iron body and manual lever design help you press prepared dough with controlled pressure, without electricity.
  • 8-INCH PRESSING SURFACE — Shape small or larger dough rounds to suit your recipe. Finished tortilla size and thickness depend on the dough type, consistency, and portion size.
  • EASIER RELEASE WITH LINERS — Designed for use with food-safe plastic cut from a zip-top bag or parchment paper above and below the dough, helping prevent sticking and making dough easier to lift.
  • FROM DOUGH TO DINNER — Press corn masa for tortillas or shape dough rounds for other recipes, then cook separately. Results vary by recipe; wheat-flour dough may need resting or additional rolling.

What size and material make sense?

An 8-inch press is the size represented by the three main candidates here. The diameter of the press indicates the maximum tortilla size it can form; the tortilla may be smaller depending on the dough ball and how it spreads. A larger press can make larger tortillas but usually takes more room and may be heavier. A compact model can suit a small kitchen or smaller tortillas, but the output may be limiting.

  • Cast iron: Its weight can help with leverage and steadiness, as the Reviewed test reported for the Victoria. It is heavy and must be dried carefully to help prevent rust.
  • Wood: A hardwood press offers a traditional, handcrafted option, but Reviewed and Saveur noted that the Central Coast model is bulky. Food Network says wood presses should be oiled periodically to help avoid cracking.
  • Light aluminum: Food Network’s guide notes that lighter aluminum presses may require more force. The cited materials do not establish a specific aluminum model as one of the three leading candidates here.

How to use a press and care for it

Press corn tortillas with a liner

  1. Prepare masa harina dough with water and a little salt. The Reviewed recipe quantities above are that publisher’s test formula, not a universal recipe.
  2. Set a dough ball between sheets of plastic wrap, a cut plastic bag, or parchment. The liner helps keep dough from sticking and makes cleanup easier.
  3. Close the press and apply pressure, then open it and check the tortilla. If needed, reposition or press again for a more even round.
  4. Cook the tortilla on a hot cooking surface. Reviewed used a preheated cast-iron skillet in its test, but its method does not establish that skillet as the only suitable pan.

These presses are chiefly intended for corn tortillas. Flour dough behaves differently: Epicurious notes that gluten-rich dough can shrink after pressing, so a tortilla press should not be assumed to replace a rolling pin for flour tortillas.

Keep cast iron dry; follow the maker’s care directions

For the Victoria, Reviewed recommends pressing with a liner, wiping the press with a damp towel, and drying it to prevent rust. Epicurious advises washing its cast-iron model when needed, drying it completely, and applying a small amount of neutral oil. Food Network says cast iron generally needs regular oiling. Care may vary by product, so follow the manufacturer’s current instructions where available.

Maintain wood and textured finishes

Food Network advises periodically oiling wood presses to help avoid cracking. For the Doña Rosa x Masienda, Epicurious reported that textured areas made cleanup more difficult and recommended thorough drying after washing, plus oiling. Avoid leaving wet dough to cake on a textured surface.

Other picks in the cited guides

Food Network’s 2025 list adds options for different priorities: it named ARC USA for value and Verve Culture for small kitchens, alongside the picks noted above. These are Food Network’s recommendations from its ten-press test, not a claim that those models outperform the three presses compared here. The cited sources do not establish current prices or stock for these or the main picks, so verify both before buying.
