The 3 Best Ring Alternative Video Doorbells With Local Storage

Yes—you can replace a Ring doorbell without committing to a monthly recording plan. The best choice depends on where footage is stored: a MicroSD card inside the doorbell, built-in memory, or storage in an indoor hub. For most buyers, the Reolink Doorbell (Battery) is the strongest fully wireless option, the Philips 7000 Series is the best package-viewing choice, and the EZVIZ EP3x Pro is the lowest-maintenance option when its solar panel receives enough sunlight.

All three are recommended by TechRadar’s home-security team and support basic local recording without requiring a paid subscription. That does not make them completely offline or immune to theft, outages, app accounts, or vendor ecosystems. This guide explains the differences before you buy.

  • Exceptional Night Vision: Equipped with four powerful infrared LEDs and an advanced image sensor, providing sharp, detailed footage even in total darkness

First, what “local storage” actually means

Local storage means recordings are saved somewhere under your control instead of being retained only in the manufacturer’s cloud. The location matters:

  • MicroSD in the doorbell: convenient and inexpensive, but the card can disappear if someone steals the camera.
  • Built-in storage: the EZVIZ EP3x Pro uses 32GB of eMMC memory. You do not need to buy a card, but the storage is not removable or easily upgraded.
  • Indoor-hub storage: the Aqara G4 puts its MicroSD slot in the indoor chime, which is harder to steal with the outdoor camera. It also adds another powered device and ecosystem dependency.
  • Home Hub, NVR, or NAS-style recording: useful for larger systems and more resilient storage, but usually requires extra hardware and, in some cases, wired power.

Local does not necessarily mean offline. Setup may still require a vendor account and app, while remote notifications and viewing generally require internet access. A doorbell may continue recording during an internet outage, but you may not receive an alert or view the clip remotely until connectivity returns. Confirm the exact behavior for the model and recording mode you choose.

1. Reolink Doorbell (Battery): best fully wireless Ring alternative

Choose it if you want a battery-powered installation, local MicroSD recording, and a head-to-toe view without running new wiring.

The Reolink Battery doorbell records at 2K/4MP resolution and offers person, vehicle, and package detection. TechRadar identifies the model as IP65-rated and found its battery performance impressive, while also reporting that it did not reach Reolink’s claimed maximum of five months. Treat that number as a scenario-dependent ceiling, not a schedule.

High traffic, frequent live views, weak Wi-Fi, long clips, high resolution, and cold weather can all shorten runtime. A busy front entrance may need more frequent charging than a quiet side door. The doorbell supports local-storage configurations involving MicroSD, Reolink Home Hub, and compatible Wi-Fi NVR equipment, depending on the setup.

Why it stands out

  • Most straightforward wireless installation of the three main picks.
  • Head-to-toe framing helps show visitors and the area immediately below the camera.
  • Supports person, vehicle, and package detection.
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi is advertised for the battery model.
  • Google Home and Amazon Alexa support are available.

What it lacks

There is no dedicated second camera aimed at parcels. If packages are routinely placed close to the door, a dual-camera model may show them more reliably. The target review also reports no Apple HomeKit or Matter support.

Arlo Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Gen) Wireless or Wired - 1-Cam
  • Video Doorbell Camera for Complete Front Door and Entryway Protection: Monitor your front door with 2K video, person recognition, package detection, two-way audio, and IP65 weather resistance. Wired or wireless installation options.
  • Arlo Secure Early Warning System Unlocks Advanced Features: Get 60-day video history, AI detection, and emergency response. A paid plan is required after trial. Live streaming and basic alerts work without a subscription.
  • Smart Alerts That Keep You Informed: Get notifications for package and pet detection, along with person and vehicle recognition. Intelligent detection helps reduce false alerts and keeps you connected wherever you are.
  • Only Get Alerts That Matter: Set custom activity zones to monitor areas like your front door and pathway, and use privacy zones to block sensitive spaces while reducing unnecessary motion alerts for more meaningful notifications.
  • Flexible Power for Easy Installation: Choose a wire-free setup with a rechargeable doorbell or hardwire to existing wiring for trickle charging and uninterrupted security.

Do not confuse this battery model with the separate Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi. That wired model offers 5MP video, MicroSD support up to 256GB, Ethernet, 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, and NVR compatibility. It is a better fit for continuous recording but not for renters or battery-only installations.

2. Philips 7000 Series: best for packages and visitors

Choose it if the lower part of the frame matters as much as the visitor’s face. The Philips 7000 uses a dual-camera design: one camera views the visitor and another looks downward toward deliveries. It offers 2K video, HDR, a rechargeable battery, an included chime, and the option to use existing doorbell wiring.

TechRadar ranks it as the strongest overall doorbell in the relevant comparison and reports crisp night vision, strong motion sensing, and a polished tested experience. It also noted some lag during two-way talk.

TechRadar reports 8GB of onboard storage. However, the current Philips product page clearly documents the dual-camera, 2K, battery, chime, and cloud-related features without clearly repeating that capacity. Verify the current manual or Philips support documentation before treating 8GB as a manufacturer-confirmed specification.

Why it stands out

  • Dual cameras provide a more useful view of parcels than a single wide-angle lens.
  • 2K HDR video is suited to identifying visitors in difficult lighting.
  • Can be installed with its battery or existing doorbell wiring.
  • Includes an indoor chime.
  • TechRadar reports effective motion sensing and night vision.

Important buying caveat

Availability is country-specific. The target coverage noted that the model was not available in the U.K. at publication, while Philips lists it for the U.S. Market pricing also varies: Philips’ U.S. suggested retail price was listed as $229.99, while the Philips Home Access store showed a $169.90 sale price when checked. Sale pricing is not a guaranteed current price.

3. EZVIZ EP3x Pro: best built-in storage and solar-assisted operation

Choose it if you want storage included in the doorbell and have a porch that receives useful sunlight. The EP3x Pro combines a 2K main camera with a 1080p lower camera, human-motion and package detection, color night vision, two-way talk, and a voice changer.

Rank #3
Ring Battery Doorbell 2K (newest model) Retinal 2K with wide-angle video, up to 6x Enhanced Zoom, Two-Way Talk, and Built-In Battery, Speckled Gray
  • Capture it all with Retinal 2K video — From wide views to tighter focus, it’s easy to see your home or business in crisp clarity with Retinal 2K.
  • Zoom in up to 6x — Catch details at a distance, inspect faces, and more with up to 6x Enhanced Zoom.
  • Connect to who’s there — See, hear, and speak in real time with Live View and Two-Way Talk.
  • Get real-time alerts — Receive real-time notifications on your phone when motion is detected.
  • Easily recharge — Simply insert the included removal tool to detach your doorbell from the wall, then recharge the built-in battery via USB-C. (Cable not included.)

Its 32GB of built-in eMMC storage is the key distinction. No MicroSD card is required for basic local recording. EZVIZ says that capacity can hold up to six months of history under an assumption of only 10 minutes of activity per day. That is a useful reference point, not a promise for a busy entrance. A home receiving frequent deliveries or experiencing repeated motion events will overwrite old footage sooner.

The included solar panel can reduce charging, but it is not magic. Shade, winter sun, panel angle, rain, dirt, and frequent activity all affect the energy balance. Hardwired operation is also supported. TechRadar reported occasional notification delays, although two-way talk worked without lag once connected.

Why it stands out

  • 32GB internal eMMC storage requires no card purchase.
  • Lower camera is designed to show packages near the threshold.
  • Included solar panel can reduce maintenance in a suitable location.
  • Supports hardwired operation as an alternative.
  • EZVIZ CloudPlay is optional for users who want cloud backup or additional cloud features.

What to consider

Built-in storage is less flexible than a removable card or NVR. The camera also uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and its broader smart-home and open-protocol support should not be assumed from the product’s Alexa compatibility alone. Alexa support may provide live-view integration without making every recording, alert, automation, or two-way-talk function available outside the EZVIZ app.

How these compare with Ring

Ring doorbells can still provide live viewing and allow you to answer doorbell notifications without a paid plan. Ring says that recorded videos and photos are not saved for later review without a subscription. In the U.S., Ring Protect Solo is currently listed at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year, while Protect Multi is $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. Check Ring’s current plan page for the latest pricing and plan details.

Ring also offers local video storage through compatible Alarm Pro equipment. That is different from placing a card in a standalone Ring doorbell and requires additional Ring hardware. The practical distinction is simple: most standalone Ring buyers should expect saved footage to live in Ring’s cloud, while the alternatives above are designed to record locally without making a paid cloud plan mandatory for basic storage.

Local recording may lower long-term costs, but you can give up some cloud conveniences, polished integrations, remote backup, or cross-device history. “No subscription required” should not be read as “no account, app, internet, or optional cloud service required.”

Choose by installation and household needs

Your priority Best direction Why
Battery-only installation Reolink Doorbell (Battery) Designed for wireless installation and local recording.
Frequent deliveries Philips 7000 or EZVIZ EP3x Pro Both use a lower-facing camera for package visibility.
Lowest routine maintenance EZVIZ EP3x Pro Built-in storage and a solar panel can reduce charging and accessory needs.
Apple HomeKit Aqara G4 Aqara advertises HomeKit Secure Video and stores MicroSD footage in its indoor chime.
24/7 recording Wired Reolink or wired Aqara G4 Battery doorbells generally sleep between events; Aqara says 24/7 recording requires wired power.
Ethernet, NVR, or continuous recording Wired Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi or PoE model Wired power and network options suit permanent recording better than a battery doorbell.
Low-sun porch Reolink Battery or wired installation Do not depend on solar charging where the panel receives limited useful light.

Other local-storage doorbells worth considering

Aqara Video Doorbell G4

The Aqara G4 is the most relevant alternative for Apple households. Its MicroSD slot is located in the indoor chime and supports cards up to 512GB. Aqara advertises Apple HomeKit Secure Video, Alexa, and Google smart-display streaming. Its limitations include 1080p video, no dedicated package camera comparable to the dual-lens models, and 24/7 recording only when wired. See Aqara’s specifications.

Wired Reolink models

If you own the property and can provide permanent power, a wired Reolink doorbell is more suitable for continuous recording, Ethernet, MicroSD, Home Hub, or NVR use. The wired Wi-Fi model is not a substitute for the battery version: it is a different product with different installation requirements and capabilities.

Local storage is not the same as a complete backup

A local clip can still be lost. A thief may remove a doorbell containing its MicroSD card; a fire or flood can destroy the camera and any indoor hub; a dead battery or failed router can interrupt recording; and built-in storage cannot simply be transferred to another device.

For important evidence:

  1. Use a high-endurance card where the product supports removable storage.
  2. Export important clips promptly instead of leaving them only in rolling storage.
  3. Keep a second copy on another local device or use optional cloud backup if the privacy trade-off is acceptable.
  4. Place indoor hubs and chimes where they are less exposed to theft or damage.
  5. Consider surge protection or backup power for the router and hub.
  6. Check whether the app requires an account and whether recordings remain accessible during an internet outage.

Installation checks before you buy

  • Wiring: confirm transformer voltage, AC/DC requirements, chime compatibility, and whether a bypass or supplied chime is needed.
  • Wi-Fi: test signal strength at the mounting point, not just inside the home.
  • Weather: check the exact model’s rating and protect the mounting area from water pooling and direct glare.
  • Battery: expect shorter runtime with frequent motion, live viewing, weak Wi-Fi, cold weather, or high-quality settings.
  • Solar: assess seasonal shade and panel placement rather than assuming the included panel will eliminate charging.
  • Storage: identify whether you need a card, hub, NVR, or no accessory at all.
  • Smart home: distinguish basic Alexa or Google live-view support from full recording, alert, automation, and two-way-talk integration.

Bottom-line recommendations

Buy the Reolink Doorbell (Battery) for the simplest genuinely wireless setup and local recording. Choose the Philips 7000 Series when package visibility and dual-camera coverage matter most, but verify its current storage and platform documentation first. Choose the EZVIZ EP3x Pro when built-in storage and solar assistance are more valuable than removable media or an open recording ecosystem.

If your priority is 24/7 recording, Ethernet, or NVR storage, skip battery models and choose a wired Reolink configuration instead.
