The best outdoor planter is the one that fits your plant, location, climate and maintenance tolerance—not a universally superior material. The 12 options below are category-based editorial picks, not hands-on test winners. Because prices, stock, dimensions and specifications change, confirm those details on the product page before buying.

12 outdoor planter picks by style and use

Use this table to narrow the field, then apply the drainage, sizing and climate checks that follow. “Not stated” means a product-level value cannot be established without selecting a specific model.

Pick Best for Typical material Shape and planting space Moving and weather considerations Drainage and care Current price
1. Tall tapered resin planter Modern entryways and narrow porches Plastic or resin Vertical profile; usable depth varies by model Usually easier to move than concrete; verify outdoor rating and sun-fade resistance Confirm drainage holes or a fitted liner; wipe the finish clean Not stated; varies by product
2. Lightweight fiberglass cube Contemporary patios and rooftops Fiberglass Geometric footprint; choose depth for the root ball Relatively light when empty; verify finish and exposure limits Drainage can be ordered or configured on some models; follow the maker’s instructions Not stated; varies by product
3. Large concrete bowl Permanent focal points and open courtyards Concrete Wide, low planting area for specimens or mixed displays Very heavy and difficult to reposition; place on a surface rated for the load Check for a drain and protect the supporting surface from runoff Not stated; varies by product
4. Metal trough Linear vegetable, herb or seasonal plantings Steel, aluminum or another metal Long horizontal bed; usable volume depends on length and depth Metal can heat up in direct sun and may rust; verify coating and outdoor suitability Use the specified liner or drainage system; do not assume one is included Not stated; varies by product
5. Terracotta pot Mediterranean styling and herbs Terracotta Usually compact and breathable; size to the plant’s mature root space Porous and breakable; exposed pots can crack in freezing weather Keep the drain open and follow winter-storage guidance Not stated; varies by product
6. Glazed ceramic planter Color-focused patios and covered porches Ceramic Many decorative forms; confirm internal planting depth Breakable; verify whether the specific construction is rated for outdoor cold Check that the glaze does not seal the drainage path Not stated; varies by product
7. Self-watering resin planter People who want a larger watering interval Plastic or resin Reservoir reduces the immediately available planting volume Lightweight; confirm how the reservoir performs in freezing conditions Clean the reservoir and follow the fill-level instructions; drainage may be controlled rather than open Not stated; varies by product
8. Window box Small balconies, railings and windows Resin, metal, wood or fiberglass Long and shallow; suited to compact-rooted plants Weight increases sharply when wet; verify bracket capacity and wind exposure Direct runoff away from walls and pedestrians; use the supplied mounting system Not stated; varies by product
9. Hanging planter Vertical displays where floor space is limited Resin, metal, ceramic or fiber composites Small planting pocket; choose plants for the available volume Wind and saturated weight are the main risks; inspect hooks and chains Prevent dripping over walkways and check the drain location before installation Not stated; varies by product
10. Wood planter box Natural, cottage or edible-garden schemes Wood; species and treatment vary Rectangular volume that can suit grouped plants Durability depends on species, treatment and exposure; product-specific lifespan is not established Use the recommended liner or drainage detail and keep the base from sitting in water Not stated; varies by product
11. Stone-look composite planter Traditional style without full stone weight Resin, fiberglass or another composite Often available in urns, bowls and columns Typically lighter than solid concrete, but verify the actual empty weight and anchoring needs Confirm the drainage configuration and clean according to the finish instructions Not stated; varies by product
12. Extra-large commercial-style planter Building entrances, plazas and large patios Fiberglass, resin, metal or concrete Large volume for a visual anchor or small tree; exact dimensions are model-specific Heavy when filled; plan delivery, placement and wind stability before purchase Coordinate drainage, liners and runoff protection with the site surface Not stated; varies by product

How to choose the right material

Fiberglass and resin

Fiberglass is relatively light and can be specified with different drainage arrangements, while resin is often an affordable way to reproduce stone or ceramic looks. Neither label guarantees UV resistance, frost performance or a particular finish. Check the exact product’s outdoor rating, dimensions, drainage and care instructions.

Metal

Metal adds a crisp architectural appearance but can become hotter than other containers in direct sun. Rust resistance depends on the metal, coating and maintenance. A liner may protect roots and the container, but only use one when the product instructions support it.

Devoko Resin 24'' Tall Planters, Large Taper Outdoor Planter
  • Removable Inner Pot: Planters are designed with removable inner pots, making it easy for you to transplant plants and clean the inside of the planter. The opening of the flower pot is designed to be widened
  • Weather Resistance: This planter is made of polypropylene material, which gives the tall tapered planter a smooth surface, good scratch resistance, and impact resistance to withstand all seasons

  • Sturdy&Stable:This planter is UV resistant and won't crack or fade with long-term use, the stylish color and modern rattan tapered look not only ensures its stability, but also makes it suitable for any outdoor environment

Concrete

Concrete is durable and stable but heavy. It is usually a stay-put choice, so confirm that a deck, balcony or paving can carry the filled load and that the planter can be delivered to its final position.

Terracotta and ceramic

Terracotta and ceramic provide distinctive finishes, but they can break; ceramic may crack outdoors during cold weather. For exposed winter locations, follow the manufacturer’s temperature and storage guidance rather than relying on the material name alone.

Wood

Wood is a common container material, but species, treatment, construction and expected service life differ widely. Evaluate the individual product instead of assuming that every wood planter has the same weather performance.

Size the planter to the plant and the setting

Measure the mature plant’s root space, not just the nursery pot it occupies today. Then compare that volume with the visual scale of the location: a small container or coordinated group suits a tight footprint, while a larger planter can anchor an open entry or patio. Leave enough room to water without overflow and to access the plant for pruning.

Drainage is part of the purchase

“Without drainage, water collects at the base of the planter and has nowhere to go,” according to the ePlanters guide. Standing water can also freeze inside a sealed planter and crack it.

  • Confirm whether the planter has open holes, a removable plug, a reservoir or no drainage provision.
  • Decide where excess water will go before placing the container, especially on balconies, decks and finished paving.
  • Pair the planter with a compatible liner, saucer or reservoir system when appropriate; do not drill through a container without checking its material, instructions and the surface below.
  • Keep drainage paths clear of roots, soil and debris during the growing season.

Match the planter to exposure and placement

Full sun

Prioritize a product with a stated outdoor and UV-suitable finish. Dark metal can heat quickly, so use heat-tolerant plants or a design that shields the root zone.

Freezing winters

Verify frost guidance for ceramic, terracotta, resin and composites. Empty or move containers when the manufacturer requires it, and never leave standing water in a sealed vessel.

Windy balconies and rooftops

Account for the filled weight, wind uplift and attachment method. A lightweight empty planter may become stable when planted, but it can also become dangerously heavy for a railing or slab.

Decks and finished surfaces

Protect the surface from trapped moisture, scratches and runoff stains. Use a compatible stand or feet only if they preserve stability and do not block the intended drainage route.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Measure the available width, height and clearance.
  2. Identify the plant’s mature size, root depth and watering needs.
  3. Select a material whose weight, heat behavior and cold tolerance suit the site.
  4. Read the exact product page for dimensions, empty weight, drainage, liner details and outdoor-use language.
  5. Plan delivery and final placement before ordering heavy or extra-large containers.
  6. Confirm the current price, stock and return terms at checkout because they change over time.

What “best” means for your budget

Lower-cost resin can make sense when portability and appearance matter more than a substantial, permanent feel. Fiberglass often occupies a middle ground between visual heft and manageable weight. Concrete and high-specification metal or composite pieces can cost more because of material, finish, structural design and freight. Compare the complete setup—including liner, stand, delivery and drainage accessories—rather than the empty container alone.

The Bottom Line

Choose the planter that solves your site’s real constraints: adequate root space, a safe drainage path, suitable weather performance and a weight you can place and support. Verify those product-specific details, plus current price and availability, before buying.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
