The 10 Best Pepper Mills, According to Published Testing

The best pepper mill depends on how you cook. For the highest manual output, choose the MÄNNKITCHEN Pepper Cannon. For a less expensive high-volume mill, choose the PepperMate Traditional Pepper Mill. The Zwilling Enfinigy is the most compelling rechargeable electric option in the cited testing, while the OXO Good Grips Mess-Free Pepper Grinder is the easiest to refill.

This is a synthesis of published evaluations from Epicurious, mybest, and Food Network plus current manufacturer specifications—not an in-house product test. Prices, inventory, colors, and warranties can change, so verify those details before buying.

Quick answer

There is no single best pepper mill for every kitchen. Based on published testing and current manufacturer specifications, the MÄNNKITCHEN Pepper Cannon is the strongest choice for cooks who want unusually high output and a wide grind range. The PepperMate Traditional Pepper Mill is the better value for high-volume manual grinding, while the Zwilling Enfinigy Electric Salt and Pepper Mill is the leading rechargeable option in the cited testing. For easy refilling, choose the OXO Good Grips Mess-Free Pepper Grinder; for a traditional French table mill, choose the Peugeot Paris u’Select.

The 10 best pepper mills at a glance

Best for Model What stands out Main drawback
High-output manual grinding MÄNNKITCHEN Pepper Cannon Very high output, broad adjustment range, large hopper Expensive; not safe for salt
Budget, high-volume grinding PepperMate Traditional Pepper Mill More pepper per crank than conventional small mills; easy to fill Warranty coverage is limited mainly to the ceramic grinder
Rechargeable electric grinding Zwilling Enfinigy Electric Salt and Pepper Mill One-button operation, USB-C charging, adjustable ceramic grinder Adjustment is less convenient and the body feels plastic
Conventional adjustable design Cole & Mason Derwent Six marked settings and a carbon-steel mechanism Not an uncontested overall winner across testing methods
Classic French design Peugeot Paris u’Select Six settings, French manufacture, lifetime-guaranteed steel mechanism Screw-off refill design is slower and less convenient
Easy, low-mess refilling OXO Good Grips Mess-Free Pepper Grinder Wide opening, upside-down refill position, non-slip grip Mixed plastic-and-metal construction feels less premium
Traditional table presentation Fletchers’ Mill Border Grill Attractive cherrywood construction and good grinding performance Top adjustment is harder to interpret precisely
Large output in a traditional shape Unicorn Magnum High output and a distinctive countertop presence Bottom thumbscrew adjustment is clunky
Grinding pepper and other spices FinaMill Battery-Operated Pepper Mill & Spice Grinder One-handed use and interchangeable spice pods Battery life was uncertain in Food Network’s testing
Colorful everyday table use Le Creuset Pepper Mill Many color choices, easy operation, consistent grind ABS construction feels less substantial than wood or metal

Our picks, explained

1. MÄNNKITCHEN Pepper Cannon: best high-output manual pepper mill

Epicurious selected the MÄNNKITCHEN Pepper Cannon as its best manual pepper grinder after testing 12 models over several weeks. Its defining advantage is output: it produces substantially more pepper per crank than ordinary tabletop mills, which makes it especially useful when seasoning a large pot, grill preparation, roast, or multiple servings at once.

The published testing also praised its broad grind range, comparatively easy filling, and removable catch cup. Those details matter in daily use. A high-output mill is less useful if it spills during refilling or leaves pepper scattered around the counter, and the removable cup gives the user a way to grind away from the plate before transferring the pepper.

OXO Good Grips Contoured Pepper Grinder with Adjustable Ceramic Mill | Pre-loaded with Peppercorns, 5 Grind Settings, Ceramic Grinder, Non-slip Grip, Home and Kitchen Use, Spice Grinder
  • Adjustable grind settings: Rotate the tab to choose from five levels from fine powder to coarse grind, making this versatile pepper grinder perfect for seasoning
  • Durable ceramic mechanism: Non-corrosive ceramic grinder resists wear, won’t absorb flavors or odors and delivers consistent results for years
  • Clear BPA-free body: Transparent design shows when to refill, while stainless steel accents make this sleek spice grinder table- and kitchen-ready
  • Pre-filled and ready to use: Grinder comes pre-loaded with premium black peppercorns, so it’s ready for seasoning right away
  • Easy refill design: Flip, unscrew and refill with peppercorns—grinder stays steady while you work

The manufacturer currently lists a 1/2-cup peppercorn capacity, hardened high-carbon stainless-steel burrs, an 8-to-60-plus mesh range, and a five-year warranty. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. The current manufacturer-listed price is $199.99, making this a premium purchase rather than a casual replacement for a small table mill.

Choose it if: you cook often, season in quantity, or dislike turning a small mill dozens of times.

Skip it if: you want the least expensive option, prefer a lightweight decorative mill, or need one grinder for both pepper and salt. MÄNNKITCHEN specifically warns against putting salt in the Pepper Cannon because salt can corrode its internal steel components.

2. PepperMate Traditional Pepper Mill: best budget and high-volume manual option

Epicurious named the PepperMate Traditional Pepper Mill its budget pick. It is designed around a wide, boxier body rather than the familiar narrow chess-piece shape, and that design delivered a practical benefit in testing: substantially more pepper per crank than standard small mills.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It was also one of the easiest models to fill in the cited comparison. Its top-mounted grind adjustment keeps the control accessible and avoids the awkwardness of trying to turn a small screw at the bottom while holding the mill over food. The tested capacity was approximately 1/3 cup, placing it below the Pepper Cannon but above many conventional table mills.

There is an important warranty qualification. PepperMate’s limited lifetime warranty applies to the ceramic grinder, not necessarily to the complete body, adjustment system, or every other component. That distinction is worth checking before treating the warranty as full coverage for the entire mill.

Choose it if: you want high output without paying premium-mill prices and do most grinding manually.

Skip it if: you want a compact, refined-looking mill for a formal table setting or highly precise, clearly marked grind controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Zwilling Enfinigy Electric Salt and Pepper Mill: best rechargeable electric value

Epicurious selected the Zwilling Enfinigy Electric Salt and Pepper Mill as its best electric option, primarily because it delivered useful electric-mill features at a lower price than premium competitors. It uses one-button operation, charges through USB-C, has an adjustable ceramic grinder, and includes a clear viewing window so the remaining peppercorns are visible.

Its approximately 1/4-cup tested capacity is smaller than the PepperMate’s and much smaller than the manufacturer’s stated capacity for the Pepper Cannon. That is not necessarily a flaw: a smaller hopper keeps the unit more manageable and can suit occasional tableside seasoning.

The compromises are control placement and materials. Testers found the grind adjustment less convenient than on the best manual designs, and the body had a plastic feel that did not match the impression created by its premium branding. It is best understood as a convenient rechargeable tool, not as a luxury object.

Choose it if: you want one-button, one-handed grinding or would rather recharge than replace batteries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: you want maximum output, a tactile all-wood or metal construction, or the simplest possible mechanism with no battery to maintain.

4. Cole & Mason Derwent: best conventional adjustable mill

The Cole & Mason Derwent is a strong choice for cooks who want a familiar manual mill with clearly defined grind settings. The manufacturer describes the pepper version as having six settings, a carbon-steel mechanism, and a lifetime guarantee on the mechanism.

The manufacturer also documents an “All-Time Favorite” recognition from America’s Test Kitchen. That is useful context, but it should not be treated as proof that the Derwent is the universal market winner. Different publications use different samples and scoring systems: mybest currently ranks an OXO model first overall, while Epicurious’s category winners differ again.

The Derwent makes the most sense when repeatable adjustment is more important than extreme output. Six marked positions help a household return to a familiar fine, medium, or coarse setting instead of relying on an unmarked screw and memory.

Choose it if: you want a conventional, recognizable design with marked adjustment positions and a strong mechanism warranty.

Skip it if: your priority is very high volume, upside-down refilling, or electric operation.

5. Peugeot Paris u’Select: best classic French pepper mill

The Peugeot Paris u’Select is the traditional-design choice for readers who care about both table presentation and a clearly defined grind system. Peugeot’s current U.S. product information lists six predefined grind settings, a steel mechanism with a lifetime guarantee, French manufacture, and PEFC-certified wood.

The mechanism is designed for pepper rather than a universal promise that it can grind anything. Peugeot lists compatibility with several peppercorn types and limited pink-pepper blends. Check the exact instructions for the model and peppercorn being used rather than assuming that every hard spice or salt is appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Epicurious described the Paris u’Select as classic and well made, but criticized its screw-off refill design. Removing a cap and filling through a narrower opening is slower and more spill-prone than a wide, quick-release hopper. That trade-off is the price of the traditional silhouette.

Price depends on the exact size and promotion. A current official-page snapshot listed the 12-centimeter Paris u’Select at $35.50 on sale, against a $59.95 regular price. The same product range also listed a separate Paris Chef model at $79.95, so confirm the model name before comparing prices.

Choose it if: you want a French-made wooden mill with marked settings and a classic table appearance.

Skip it if: quick refilling and maximum convenience matter more than traditional design.

6. OXO Good Grips Mess-Free Pepper Grinder: best for easy refilling

The OXO Good Grips Mess-Free Pepper Grinder addresses one of the most annoying parts of owning a pepper mill: getting peppercorns into it without spilling them across the counter. Its wide refill opening is easier to use than the narrow openings found on many traditional designs. The body can also rest flat upside down while being filled, so the grinder does not have to be held awkwardly in midair.

OXO lists a top-positioned non-corrosive ceramic grinder, a soft non-slip grip, and a 55-gram capacity. The current product naming may vary by listing; the manufacturer’s current page refers to an Accent Mess-Free Pepper Grinder. Verify the exact version, dimensions, and price before ordering.

Epicurious liked the opening and refill setup but found the mixed plastic-and-metal construction less premium-feeling than wood or heavier metal models. OXO’s current price snapshot was $32.99. That makes it a practical convenience pick, not necessarily a statement piece.

Choose it if: you refill often, have limited hand strength, or want to reduce peppercorn spills.

Skip it if: you want an heirloom-style wooden mill or a particularly weighty metal body.

7. Fletchers’ Mill Border Grill: best-looking traditional table mill

Epicurious reported good grinding performance from the Fletchers’ Mill Border Grill and highlighted its attractive cherrywood construction. The manufacturer describes it as a refillable salt-or-pepper mill, giving it a more traditional table-tool role than some of the high-output countertop designs.

The compromise is its adjustment control. The Border Grill uses a top adjustment mechanism that testers found less precise and harder to interpret than marked controls located at the base of a mill. That does not make it unsuitable for everyday use, but it means the user may need to adjust by feel and inspect the resulting grind rather than selecting a clearly labeled setting.

Choose it if: appearance and a warm wooden table presentation are central to your decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: you frequently switch between fine and coarse grinds and want the setting to be obvious and repeatable.

8. Unicorn Magnum: best large-output traditional mill

The Unicorn Magnum combines a traditional countertop appearance with more output than many ordinary pepper mills. Epicurious reported that it delivered a large amount of pepper per crank and had a stylish presence on the counter.

Its bottom thumbscrew adjustment was the main weakness. The control is clunkier to use and less competitive with the more convenient adjustment systems on the Pepper Cannon and PepperMate. A mill can grind quickly and still be frustrating if changing texture requires turning an imprecise screw, especially when the mill is already full and sitting over a dish.

Choose it if: you want a distinctive traditional mill with strong output.

9. FinaMill Battery-Operated Pepper Mill & Spice Grinder: best multi-spice electric alternative

Food Network selected the FinaMill Battery-Operated Pepper Mill & Spice Grinder as its best electric pick. Its most unusual feature is the interchangeable pod system: one handheld motor can be used with different pods for pepper and other spices, reducing the need to keep a separate grinder for every ingredient.

The design supports one-handed operation and performed efficiently in Food Network’s test group. This makes it particularly appealing when the other hand is occupied with a pan, spoon, or serving dish. The reported uncertainty was battery life, so it is less attractive for cooks who want a device that can be left in a drawer for months and still be ready without checking its charge.

10. Le Creuset Pepper Mill: best colorful everyday table option

Food Network chose the Le Creuset Pepper Mill for its broad color range, easy operation, consistent grind size, and 10-year warranty. It is a sensible option for shoppers who want their pepper mill to coordinate with cookware or tableware rather than disappear into a utensil drawer.

The body uses ABS construction. That can make the mill practical and easy to handle, but it may feel less premium than a wood or metal model at a similar visual position. The choice is therefore more about color, straightforward use, and warranty coverage than about maximum output or luxury materials.

Choose it if: you want an easy-to-use mill in a specific color and value a 10-year warranty.

How to choose the right pepper mill

Start with output, not appearance

If you regularly season large pots, steaks, vegetables, or several plates at once, output per turn matters more than a mill’s height or finish. The Pepper Cannon and PepperMate are the clearest high-volume choices in the cited testing. The Unicorn Magnum also produces a large amount per crank, but its adjustment control is less convenient.

For occasional use at the table, a smaller conventional mill can be perfectly adequate. High capacity reduces refills, but it also tends to increase the mill’s size and weight. The manufacturer lists the Pepper Cannon at 1/2 cup; Epicurious reported approximately 1/3 cup for the PepperMate and 1/4 cup for the tested Zwilling. Capacity figures from different sources and model versions should not be treated as a precise performance ranking.

Decide whether manual or electric is better for your hands

Manual mills do not need charging, batteries, or a motor, and they usually offer the most direct control. They are a good fit for normal tableside seasoning and for anyone who wants a tool that is ready immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Electric mills are useful when one-handed operation or reduced wrist effort is important. The Zwilling uses a rechargeable USB-C design and one-button operation. The FinaMill adds interchangeable pods for other spices. Electric convenience brings extra components and power management, however, and neither option is the obvious choice if you want maximum output with minimal maintenance.

Look for repeatable grind settings

A good adjustment system should create a noticeable difference between fine and coarse settings and make it possible to return to a preferred texture. mybest’s in-house testing of 22 pepper mills specifically evaluated ease of use, whether the settings produced a clear difference, and the consistency of fine and coarse grains.

Marked controls on the Cole & Mason Derwent and Peugeot Paris u’Select are easier to interpret than the top adjustment on the Fletchers’ Mill Border Grill or the bottom thumbscrew on the Unicorn Magnum. If you mostly use one setting, this distinction matters less. If you switch between finishing pepper and coarse seasoning, it matters every time you cook.

Do not treat steel and ceramic as a universal winner

Mechanism material involves a trade-off rather than a simple hierarchy. Epicurious reported that its testers found metal mechanisms sharper and more even in preliminary testing. By contrast, OXO specifically promotes a non-corrosive ceramic mechanism for pepper, salt, and whole spices in its product documentation.

Steel may appeal to cooks prioritizing a sharp, even grind, while ceramic can be attractive where corrosion resistance is important. The mechanism’s design, adjustment system, and the manufacturer’s approved ingredients matter at least as much as the material label. Never assume that a ceramic mechanism makes every mill safe for every ingredient, or that every steel mechanism is unsuitable for salt; check the model’s instructions.

Make refilling part of the decision

Refilling is easy to overlook when comparing photographs, but it becomes a regular chore. Wide openings, removable tops, and quick-release systems reduce spills. Epicurious praised the PepperMate’s filling process and the OXO’s wide opening. It regarded the Peugeot’s screw-off refill design as a disadvantage.

If you buy whole peppercorns in bulk, prioritize capacity and a wide opening. If you buy small quantities and keep the mill on the table, a more compact hopper may be preferable because it keeps the mill lighter and easier to handle.

Check salt compatibility separately

Salt is not interchangeable with pepper simply because both ingredients are ground at the table. MÄNNKITCHEN explicitly says not to put salt in the Pepper Cannon because it may corrode internal steel components. Use a dedicated salt mill unless the manufacturer clearly approves salt for the specific model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The OXO documentation promotes its non-corrosive ceramic grinder for pepper, salt, and whole spices, but that example should not be generalized to all pepper mills. A product described as a pepper mill may have a mechanism intended only for peppercorns.

Care and maintenance

  • Keep the mechanism dry. Moisture can affect peppercorns and may damage or corrode mechanisms that are not designed for wet ingredients.
  • Follow the model’s cleaning instructions. The Pepper Cannon manufacturer says to keep the interior dry and not put the mill in a dishwasher.
  • Do not wash peppercorns before loading. If peppercorns are damp, allow them to dry completely before filling a mill.
  • Do not overfill automatically. A large hopper is useful, but leave enough room for the mechanism and follow the fill line or capacity guidance.
  • Change settings gradually. Turn the adjustment while the mill is empty or nearly empty if the instructions recommend it; forcing a tight adjustment against whole peppercorns can stress the mechanism.
  • Use the correct ingredient. Whole black, white, green, or specialty peppercorns may be supported differently by each manufacturer. Very soft, damp, oily, or unusually large ingredients can behave differently from ordinary dried peppercorns.

What the published testing actually tells us

The recommendations come from different test designs, so their rankings should not be merged into one pretend-precise league table.

  • Epicurious reported testing 12 models over several weeks. Its process included repeated grinding, home use, refill comparisons, and adjustment tests. It selected the Pepper Cannon as best manual, the PepperMate as its budget pick, the Zwilling as its best electric option, and identified strengths and weaknesses in the other traditional models above.
  • mybest reported in-house testing of 22 pepper mills, focusing on ease of use and grind performance, including whether fine and coarse settings produced clearly different and consistent grains. It currently ranks an OXO model first overall, which is why no product here should be described as an uncontested market winner.
  • Food Network tested across manual and electric models and considered materials, size, and functionality. It selected FinaMill for multi-spice electric use and Le Creuset for color, ease, consistency, and warranty.
  • Manufacturer specifications supply details such as stated capacity, mechanism material, warranty terms, current colors, and adjustment ranges. Those claims should be read as product information rather than independent performance measurements.

How to test a pepper mill properly

If a publication wants to use a title such as “tested and approved,” it should measure more than whether each mill can produce pepper. A fair comparison would use the same peppercorn batch and record the model size and price on the test date.

  1. Time how long each mill takes to refill and record spills or dropped peppercorns.
  2. Measure the grams of pepper produced after 10 full manual turns, using the same starting setting and peppercorn batch.
  3. Compare fine, medium, and coarse output for particle-size consistency, not just the visual amount produced.
  4. Record perceived effort or force, including whether the grip slips or the adjustment binds.
  5. Test one-handed operation on electric models and note button placement, vibration, and whether the mill can be controlled over a plate.
  6. Check residual pepper after setting the mill down and assess whether the base or catch cup keeps counters clean.
  7. Evaluate stability, refill access, cleaning, battery charging, and remaining pepper visibility.
  8. Document warranty and support terms separately. A lifetime guarantee on a ceramic grinder or mechanism is not automatically a lifetime guarantee on the entire product.

That protocol separates measurable performance from subjective judgments such as whether a plastic body feels premium or a wooden mill looks better on a dining table.

Buying peppercorns and a salt mill

A refillable mill needs dry, whole peppercorns. Choose the size and variety that the manufacturer approves, and keep extra peppercorns sealed in a cool, dry place rather than storing them in a humid area near the stove. Buying whole black peppercorns in a size suitable for the mill is the simplest starting point; specialty varieties can add flavor, but they should not be assumed compatible with every mechanism.

If you also want freshly ground salt, buy a dedicated salt mill or choose a model whose manufacturer explicitly supports salt. Do not use the Pepper Cannon for salt, and do not infer compatibility from the word “ceramic” alone.

Bottom line

Choose the MÄNNKITCHEN Pepper Cannon when speed, output, and a broad range of grinds justify a $199.99 premium. Choose the PepperMate Traditional Pepper Mill when you want much of the high-volume advantage at a more budget-oriented position. The Zwilling Enfinigy is the practical rechargeable choice, the OXO Good Grips Mess-Free is the least frustrating to refill, and the Peugeot Paris u’Select remains the strongest classic French-design option. For the remaining mills, choose based on the specific trade-off—marked adjustments, wood construction, output, multi-spice flexibility, or color—rather than assuming that one test winner suits every kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best pepper mill overall?

The MÄNNKITCHEN Pepper Cannon is the strongest choice for high-volume manual grinding, while the PepperMate Traditional Pepper Mill is the better budget option. For rechargeable electric use, choose the Zwilling Enfinigy; for easy refilling, choose the OXO Good Grips Mess-Free Pepper Grinder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a pepper mill for salt?

Do not put salt in the MÄNNKITCHEN Pepper Cannon; its manufacturer warns that salt can corrode the internal steel components. For any other model, use salt only when the manufacturer explicitly says the mechanism is salt-compatible.

Are electric pepper mills better than manual mills?

Manual mills are simpler, always ready, and do not need batteries. Electric mills are useful for one-handed operation or reduced wrist effort. The Zwilling Enfinigy is a rechargeable USB-C option, while the FinaMill can use interchangeable pods for pepper and other spices.

Is a steel or ceramic pepper mill better?

Not necessarily. Published testing found advantages for metal mechanisms in sharpness and evenness, while OXO promotes a non-corrosive ceramic mechanism for pepper, salt, and whole spices. The mechanism design and approved ingredients matter more than assuming one material is always superior.

The Bottom Line

Best overall for high-volume manual grinding: MÄNNKITCHEN Pepper Cannon. Best value: PepperMate Traditional Pepper Mill. Best electric option: Zwilling Enfinigy. Best for easy refilling: OXO Good Grips Mess-Free Pepper Grinder. No ranking is universal because the cited tests used different models, criteria, and methodologies.
