The best fabric softener depends on whether you need conventional softness, dryer-stage static control, fragrance-free care, or odor removal without coating fabrics.

Best overall: Downy Ultra Liquid Fabric Conditioner for conventional softness on suitable everyday loads. Choose a fragrance-free liquid or sheet if you are avoiding added scent, a dryer sheet for dryer-stage static control, and a fabric rinse—not a traditional softener—when odor in towels or activewear is the problem.

The best fabric softener depends on the job: choose a liquid conditioner for a conventional cotton or linen load, dryer sheets when dryer-stage static control is the priority, a fragrance-free formula if you are avoiding added scent, and a fabric rinse when odor—not extra coating—is the problem. For most ordinary loads, Downy Ultra Liquid Fabric Conditioner is the strongest conventional-liquid pick in current Good Housekeeping testing.

None of these products belongs in every load. Conventional liquid softeners and dryer sheets can leave a coating that compromises absorbency, wicking, water repellency, cleaning performance, or flame resistance. Check the care label first, and skip conventional softener for performance wear, towels when absorbency matters, microfiber, water-repellent items, flame-resistant clothing, swimwear, and cloth diapers.

The 10 best fabric softeners and alternatives

  1. Downy Ultra Liquid Fabric Conditioner — Best conventional liquid overall

Good Housekeeping names Downy Ultra its best overall fabric softener and reports especially noticeable softness in its lab testing. It is the straightforward choice for ordinary washable cottons and linens when a conventional soft feel and a floral scent are welcome.

Choose it for: Everyday bedding, casual clothes, and other suitable fabrics where softness is the main goal.
Know before buying: The floral scent can be too prominent for fragrance-sensitive households. Buy the specific scent/formula you want; different Downy products should not be treated as identical.

  2. Downy Free & Gentle Liquid Fabric Softener — Best mainstream fragrance-free liquid

Good Housekeeping selects Downy Free & Gentle for sensitive skin. The manufacturer says this liquid has no dyes or perfumes and uses diethylester dimethyl ammonium chloride as its softening active. It is a practical mainstream option for people who want a conventional liquid without added fragrance.

Manufacturer claims: hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested, with recognition from eczema and psoriasis organizations. Those claims describe the product; they do not guarantee that it will prevent a rash, allergy, or eczema flare for a particular person.

Use it correctly: Put it in the dispenser when your machine has one. For applicable top-loading machines, Downy also permits adding it during the rinse cycle; follow the bottle and appliance instructions.

  3. Bounce Dryer Sheets — Best conventional dryer-sheet pick

Good Housekeeping names Bounce its best dryer-sheet pick. Select this format when static control in the dryer is your priority and you want the familiar convenience of a conventional sheet.

Choose it for: Suitable everyday loads that come out of the dryer with static cling.
Skip it for: Fragrance-free needs and specialty fabrics that should not receive conventional softening products.

  4. Seventh Generation Free & Clear Liquid Fabric Softener — Best ingredient-forward fragrance-free liquid

Seventh Generation Free & Clear is a strong option for shoppers who want both a fragrance-free liquid conditioner and unusually direct product-level disclosure. Its product page lists ingredients and says the formula is free of dyes and fragrances, USDA Certified Biobased Product 84%, and EPA Safer Choice certified.

EPA Safer Choice is a voluntary U.S. program with ingredient and product-performance criteria. It is useful certification information, not proof that a product is non-toxic or suitable for every person or every fabric.

  5. Seventh Generation Free & Clear Fabric Softener Sheets — Best certified fragrance-free sheet

For a fragrance-free dryer-sheet format with current certifications, choose Seventh Generation Free & Clear Fabric Softener Sheets. The manufacturer describes them as fragrance-free, dermatologist tested, EPA Safer Choice certified, and USDA Certified Biobased Product 97%; its page also lists the softening ingredients.

Important label limitation: Do not use these sheets on flame-resistant garments or fluffy cotton fabrics such as fleece, flannel, and terrycloth.

  6. all free clear Liquid Fabric Softener — Best alternative fragrance-free liquid

all free clear Liquid Fabric Softener gives shoppers another no-dyes, no-perfumes liquid option. The brand calls it hypoallergenic and notes National Psoriasis Foundation recognition.

Use it correctly: Follow the dispenser-dose directions and do not pour it directly onto fabrics. Its label also says not to use it on flame-resistant sleepwear or fluffy fabrics such as fleece and terry cloth.

  7. all free clear Dryer Sheets — Best fragrance-free sheets for static and pet hair

all free clear Dryer Sheets are the fragrance-free-sheet choice for households looking for the brand’s stated benefits of softening, static control, wrinkle reduction, and pet-hair repelling. The pet-hair result is a manufacturer claim, not an independent result in the research reviewed here.

    • 2 IN 1 BENEFIT: Experience this Downy liquid fabric softener that fights odors and leaves an April Fresh scent

    • SAFE ON ALL MACHINES: This liquid fabric softener is safe on all washing machines, fitting easily into your laundry routine

Label dosing: one sheet for a small load, two for a medium load, and three for a large load. More sheets are not better; excess can leave residue on laundry or the machine.

  8. Bounce Free & Gentle Fabric Softener Dryer Sheets — Best mainstream fragrance-free sheet

Bounce Free & Gentle is a broadly familiar dry-format alternative for readers avoiding added fragrance. Bounce describes these sheets as fragrance-free, dermatologist tested, and hypoallergenic, and says they soften while reducing static and wrinkles.

They still belong to the same conventional-softener exclusions as other dryer sheets. Fragrance-free describes the formula; it is not a medical guarantee.

  9. Downy Rinse & Refresh — Best odor-focused softener alternative

Downy Rinse & Refresh is not a traditional fabric softener. Good Housekeeping includes it as its best fabric rinse, while Downy describes it as a citric-acid-based rinse that removes odor-causing residue instead of lubricating or coating fibers. That distinction makes it the clearest choice here for persistent odor in washable activewear, towels, or laundry left damp too long.

Downy says it is suitable for washable activewear, towels, and children’s clothing. Because it is intended to avoid the coating associated with traditional softeners, it is the better fit when preserving towel absorbency or athletic-wear wicking matters. Do not use it in the same load as liquid softener: both products use the rinse/dispenser slot.

  10. HEX Performance Fabric Conditioner — Best specialty choice for performance gear

Good Housekeeping selects HEX for workout wear. HEX says its fabric conditioner and wet dryer sheets are designed to preserve breathability, wicking, and stretch. This is a performance-gear-specific option to consider when you want conditioning for athletic fabrics rather than a conventional all-purpose softener.

    • SAFE ON ALL MACHINES: This fabric softener liquid is safe to use on all washing machines, making your laundry routine hassle-free

That performance support is primarily a manufacturer claim in the available research, so it should not be read as proof that it will outperform every alternative on every synthetic garment. Follow the garment label and HEX directions.

Pick the format before you pick the brand

Format What it does Best use Key limitation
Liquid fabric conditioner Rinse-stage coating/lubricating product Conventional softness on suitable everyday loads Can reduce absorbency, wicking, repellency, cleaning effectiveness, or flame-resistant performance
Dryer sheet Heat-activated dryer product Dryer-stage static control and convenience Has the same broad specialty-fabric exclusions as conventional softener
Fabric rinse Residue- and odor-removal alternative Odor-prone towels, washable activewear, and forgotten laundry Not a traditional softener; do not combine with liquid conditioner in the dispenser slot

How to choose

  • You want maximum conventional softness and a noticeable scent: Start with Downy Ultra Liquid Fabric Conditioner, if the load is suitable for conventional softener.
  • You want no added fragrance or dyes: For liquid, choose Downy Free & Gentle, Seventh Generation Free & Clear, or all free clear. For sheets, choose Bounce Free & Gentle, Seventh Generation Free & Clear, or all free clear.
  • You want static control but only want to add something in the dryer: Choose a dryer sheet. Liquid conditioner is used in the washer’s rinse system; sheets work in the dryer.
  • You are fighting odor in activewear, towels, or forgotten laundry: Choose Downy Rinse & Refresh rather than a conventional conditioner.
  • You want a product explicitly aimed at workout clothing: Consider HEX Performance Fabric Conditioner, while treating its wicking and stretch benefits as manufacturer-positioned claims.

Do not use conventional softener on these items

Use softener without creating residue problems

  1. Read the garment label and product label. A product can be appropriate for ordinary sheets but wrong for the next load of athletic clothing.
  2. Use the labeled amount only. Excess liquid softener or too many sheets can leave residue on clothes and appliances.
  3. Use the right compartment. Use a liquid dispenser where available. Never pour all free clear Liquid Fabric Softener directly onto fabrics.
  4. Do not stack softening products. Do not add liquid conditioner, dryer sheets, and a rinse merely because each promises a different benefit. Choose the one that addresses the load’s real need.
  5. Keep rinse and conditioner separate. Downy Rinse & Refresh and liquid softener both use the rinse/dispenser stage, so do not use them in the same load.
  6. Pause use if a household member reacts to a product. “Hypoallergenic,” dermatologist tested, fragrance-free, and certified are useful product descriptors, but none can predict an individual skin response.

What the labels and certifications do—and do not—tell you

“Fragrance-free” and “free of dyes and perfumes” are meaningful formulation details for people avoiding added scent. They are not promises that a product cannot irritate skin or trigger a sensitivity. Similarly, manufacturer terms such as “hypoallergenic” should be understood as product claims, not as medical outcomes.

EPA Safer Choice is relevant to the exact Seventh Generation Free & Clear liquid and sheet products above because their current product pages display the designation. EPA’s voluntary program evaluates ingredients and product-level performance; for fabric softeners, its standard requires the stated CSPA DCC-13 user-requirement test or an equivalent method. That makes it a worthwhile criterion for shoppers who value that program, but it does not establish universal safety or make every use appropriate.

Our practical verdict

For conventional softness on a suitable everyday load, choose Downy Ultra Liquid Fabric Conditioner. For a mainstream fragrance-free liquid, choose Downy Free & Gentle; for ingredient disclosure and product-specific EPA Safer Choice certification, choose Seventh Generation Free & Clear Liquid. For dryer-stage static control, choose Bounce Dryer Sheets or a fragrance-free alternative from Bounce, all, or Seventh Generation. When odor is the real issue—especially in towels or washable athletic clothing—skip the coating and use Downy Rinse & Refresh.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use fabric softener on towels?

Not necessarily. Conventional softener can leave a coating that reduces towel absorbency. If absorbency matters, skip liquid softener and dryer sheets; dryer balls are the better dryer companion option.

Can I use fabric softener on workout clothes?

Usually no. Conventional liquid softener and dryer sheets can interfere with moisture wicking. For washable activewear with persistent odor, a fabric rinse such as Downy Rinse & Refresh is the more suitable documented option; for a performance-gear-specific conditioner, consider HEX while following the garment label.

Can I use Downy Rinse & Refresh and liquid softener together?

No. Both use the rinse/dispenser stage, and Downy directs users not to use Rinse & Refresh with liquid fabric softener in the same load. Choose softness or odor-focused rinsing based on the load’s need.

Does fragrance-free mean it cannot irritate skin?

No. Fragrance-free is a formulation descriptor, not a guarantee that a product will be suitable for every individual or prevent irritation. If you have a known skin condition or reaction history, follow your clinician’s guidance and stop using a product that causes a reaction.

How much fabric softener should I use?

Use the manufacturer’s labeled dose. Excess liquid softener or too many dryer sheets can leave residue on laundry and appliances, so adding more does not improve results.

The Bottom Line

Use conventional softener only on compatible everyday fabrics and at the label dose. For towels, activewear, microfiber, water-repellent gear, flame-resistant garments, swimwear, and cloth diapers, preserve the fabric’s function by skipping conventional liquid softener and dryer sheets.
