For most homeowners, the Ryobi 40V HP Whisper Series 800 CFM is the best cordless leaf blower to buy. It combines strong independently measured blowing force, useful controls, a large battery platform, relatively low noise, and better value than most premium alternatives. Choose the EGO Power+ 880 CFM if maximum handheld power matters more than battery cost and weight; the Greenworks Pro 60V BL60L512 if value is the priority; or a backpack such as the ECHO DPB-5800T if you routinely clear a large property or heavy, wet leaves.
Cordless blowers are now credible replacements for gas blowers for most residential cleanup. They are not all equivalent, however. CFM and MPH ratings are measured inconsistently, maximum-power runtime is usually far shorter than the advertised low-speed figure, and some blowers produce substantially more force with a larger battery. The rankings below therefore separate handhelds from backpacks and distinguish manufacturer specifications from independent test results.

One important exception: EGO Commercial’s new LBX1000 is rated higher on paper than every handheld here, at 1,000 CFM and 32 Newtons. It is included later as a heavy-duty model to watch, but the public independent evidence is not yet extensive enough to give it a top tested award.
How these blowers were evaluated
This is a review of current products using manufacturer documentation plus published independent testing from Consumer Reports, Popular Mechanics, TechGearLab, and Pro Tool Reviews. The performance numbers are attributed to the organization that measured them; they are not presented as original hands-on measurements by Bettesworth Construction.
#1 Best Overall
- [Powerful Motor & Two-Speed Control] SUNCHERS cordless leaf blower features a powerful motor with a speed of up to 18,000RPM, enhancing work efficiency. It provides airflow and speed up to 680CFM and 250MPH, the low-speed mode is suitable for cleaning dust in fine areas such as car interiors and window sills. The high-speed mode can quickly blow away larger debris such as fallen leaves in the courtyard and loose stones on the road, easily handling various cleaning challenges.
- [2 x 3.0Ah Batteries System] Equipped with two 3.0Ah batteries and a battery charger. The blower leaf has a maximum runtime of over 60 minutes, and even at the highest wind speed, it can last for more than 30 minutes, effectively increased battery usage time. Please charge in a cool and safe area and unplug it when charging is complete. You can get more “SUNCHERS battery or charger” on Amazon.
- [Double Tube Design & Wide Uses] Electric leaf blower is equipped with dual hoses, and its latch design allows for easy assembly and disassembly, making it perfect for a variety of cleaning situations. Whether it's fallen leaves deep in the courtyard, dust on the car roof, lawn debris close to the ground, or dust in low Spaces such as indoors, users only need to switch different air ducts according to their actual needs to precisely remove the debris.
- [Lightweight and Ergonomic Design] Weighing just 5.5lbs, the leaf blower is designed with a lightweight build, making it ideal for most users. It comes with a rubber-coated, non-slip handle that offers a comfortable grip and is ergonomically designed. Combined with a sturdy base, it provides excellent balance, effectively reducing user fatigue and ensuring a smooth and convenient experience.
- [Easy to Assemble and Operate] Assembling our blower is effortless. Just insert the battery, attach the blower tube, and press the start switch to power up the cordless leaf blower, making it ideal for home and yard use. If you have any problem, please feel free to contact us. We will solve your problem.
That distinction matters. A manufacturer’s CFM and MPH rating is a specification, not necessarily a result obtained under the same conditions as another brand’s rating. Independent tests may use a different nozzle, battery, measurement distance, surface, or test protocol.
Useful published testing includes:
- Consumer Reports’ gas-versus-electric testing, which examines sweeping, loosening embedded debris, handling, noise at the operator’s ear and at a distance, and runtime.
- Popular Mechanics’ practical testing, including airspeed, air volume, runtime, sawdust erosion, leaves, hay, grass clippings, noise, and clearing control.
- TechGearLab’s side-by-side test of eight blowers, including airflow, airspeed, runtime, charge time, and operating weight.
- HGTV’s wet-leaf testing and buying guidance, which illustrates why wet debris and measurement location can change the result.
- Pro Tool Reviews’ Newton-force, runtime, noise, and battery-comparison tests, linked in the individual reviews below.
The most useful review would test every exact retail SKU on the same day with the same battery state, nozzle, surface, and debris. If you are comparing listings yourself, apply that same discipline: a Ryobi 730 CFM is not the same blower as the current 800 CFM model, and a Ryobi 730 CFM backpack is not the current 850 CFM backpack.

The 10 best cordless leaf blowers
1. Ryobi 40V HP Whisper Series 800 CFM: best overall handheld
Model: RY40HPLB01B bare tool; RY40HPLB01K kit
Best for: Most homeowners with a medium or large residential yard
Skip it if: You need a backpack for all-day work or want the lightest possible handheld
Ryobi’s current 40V HP Whisper Series blower is the most balanced choice in this group. Its official rating is 800 CFM and 180 MPH, and the tool has a variable-speed trigger, cruise control, and separate power and runtime modes. Ryobi claims more than 85 minutes of low-speed runtime with an 8Ah battery and says the Whisper Series is 82% quieter than gas. Those are useful platform claims, but the low-speed runtime should not be confused with continuous high-power operation. See the official Ryobi specifications.
In Pro Tool Reviews’ test with an 8Ah battery, the Ryobi produced 25.3 Newtons on high and 18.2 Newtons on low. Runtime was 11 minutes 37 seconds in Max Power mode and 15 minutes 13 seconds in Max Runtime mode. The test measured 71 dBA on low and 75 dBA on high at the operator’s ear. Pro Tool Reviews measured the tool at approximately 6.4 pounds bare and 10.5 pounds with the 8Ah battery. Read the full Ryobi 800 CFM test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPopular Mechanics also named it its best overall handheld after testing leaves, hay, grass clippings, sawdust, airspeed, air volume, runtime, noise, and practical clearing. Its published page contains an obvious 0.4-pound weight error. Do not use that number; it is inconsistent with the tool’s size and with independent scale measurements.
The Ryobi’s strength is not one record specification. It is the combination of substantial real-world force, useful low-speed control, and access to the extensive Ryobi 40V ecosystem. It is a convincing gas replacement for ordinary homeowner work, including dry leaves, grass clippings, pine needles, patios, driveways, and many wet-leaf jobs.
Important drawback: An 8Ah battery makes the tool heavy enough to cause wrist fatigue during long sessions, while high-power operation drains it quickly. If your cleanup routinely lasts longer than 15 to 20 minutes at high output, budget for a second battery or consider the Ryobi backpack model.
2. EGO Power+ 880 CFM: most powerful residential handheld
Models: LB8800 bare tool; LB8803-2 kit
Best for: Large residential yards, wet leaves, pine needles, and car drying
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Skip it if: You intend to use the small kit battery at maximum power for long sessions
EGO’s LB8800 is the highest-output residential handheld in the shortlist by published specification, rated at 880 CFM and 200 MPH. It has a digital display, carbon-fiber body, two nozzles, IPX4 weather resistance, and compatibility with EGO’s 56V ARC Lithium battery system. EGO claims up to 90 minutes using two included 4Ah batteries, but that figure is a low-demand runtime claim. The EGO product page provides the official configuration and features.
The critical buying detail is battery size. Pro Tool Reviews measured 19.8 Newtons with a 4Ah battery, 24.3 Newtons with a 7.5Ah battery, and 29.4 Newtons with a 12Ah battery. With the 4Ah battery, it ran for 12 minutes 35 seconds on high; the tester estimated approximately eight minutes of continuous turbo use. See the independent EGO 880 review.
This is why a 30-Newton-class claim should not be treated as the output of every kit. A larger battery can unlock more peak performance on this blower, but it also adds cost and handheld weight. The 880 is an excellent choice if you already own a larger EGO battery or are willing to buy one. If your priority is a lighter tool for short cleanup, the kit’s 4Ah battery may be more manageable, but it will not deliver the same measured force.
The EGO has the power to move stubborn wet leaves and pine needles, but its turbo mode is best used in bursts. For a typical homeowner, high mode plus a larger battery is usually more useful than holding turbo continuously.
3. Husqvarna Leaf Blaster 350iB: best premium handheld for control
Model: 350iB kit with BLi30 battery and charger
Best for: Buyers who want strong output, precise airflow, and premium controls
Skip it if: You want the lowest kit cost or a compact tool for occasional patio cleanup
Husqvarna lists the 350iB at 800 CFM, 200 MPH, and 23.5 Newtons, with cruise control, boost mode, and compatibility with its 36V battery system. The kit includes a BLi30 battery rated at 7.7Ah and a charger. Husqvarna lists a 10-pound operating weight with the included battery and a 79.4 dBA operator-ear sound-pressure rating. Check the Husqvarna specifications for the current configuration.

TechGearLab bought and tested eight blowers side by side and measured the 350iB at 1,105 CFM and 153 MPH at five inches from the nozzle. It ran for more than 37 minutes on high, weighed 10.2 pounds on the tester’s scale, and took approximately 70 minutes to charge. TechGearLab named it its best overall blower. Popular Mechanics reported roughly 15 minutes at maximum power and up to 30 minutes at lower settings in its own testing.
The different airflow figures do not automatically mean one tester is wrong. Husqvarna’s 800 CFM rating and TechGearLab’s 1,105 CFM measurement were not necessarily obtained with the same nozzle, distance, instrument, or method. The useful takeaway is that the 350iB has ample airflow and unusually good control. Its narrow nozzle concentrates the stream for beds, edges, and gutters; its larger nozzle moves more volume for broad leaf piles.
The 350iB is a refined handheld rather than simply a high-number blower. Cruise control reduces trigger fatigue, and boost gives a short reserve for stuck debris. It can work around gutters, although Popular Mechanics found it awkward from a ladder. Use a stable ground-based method whenever possible.
4. Greenworks Pro 60V BL60L512: best value
Model: BL60L512
Best for: Value-conscious homeowners who want strong performance and a long warranty
Recommended Free Tools
Skip it if: You already own another high-voltage battery platform and would have to buy a complete new system
Greenworks’ BL60L512 is rated at 700 CFM and 170 MPH and comes with a 5Ah battery. The package weight is listed at 10.14 pounds, and the kit includes a 6A charger. Greenworks claims up to 50 minutes at low speed and a 50-minute recharge time. It has variable speed, cruise control, and turbo. The manufacturer lists a four-year tool and battery warranty. See the current Greenworks listing.
Consumer Reports identified this model as its highest-scoring handheld in its 2026 cordless-blower roundup, with an overall score of 85 out of 100 and a reported price of about $250 at the time of its coverage. Consumer Reports’ roundup and test coverage should be checked for current availability and subscription-specific details. Pro Tool Reviews measured 20 Newtons with the concentrator nozzle in its test; read its Greenworks review.
The Greenworks is a strong value because the performance is not merely theoretical. It has enough force for normal leaf piles, grass clippings, hard surfaces, and many wet-leaf jobs, while the four-year battery warranty reduces some ownership risk.

5. ECHO DPB-2500: best lightweight/value handheld
Model: DPB-2500
Best for: Small and medium yards, patios, driveways, grass clippings, and users sensitive to weight
Skip it if: You regularly move deeply embedded wet leaves or need backpack-level output
The ECHO DPB-2500 is a useful middle ground between a compact cleanup blower and a heavy high-output handheld. ECHO lists 16 Newtons of blowing force, maximum airflow of 896.4 cubic meters per hour—approximately 528 CFM—and maximum airspeed of 65.9 meters per second—approximately 147.5 MPH. Dry weight is 2.6 kilograms, or about 5.7 pounds.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →ECHO lists 12 minutes of wide-open-throttle runtime with its 150Wh battery and 26 minutes with its 250Wh battery. Popular Mechanics named it its best-value handheld and measured 23 minutes 26 seconds of runtime, 112 MPH, and 483 CFM in its test configuration. Its reported package weight was 9.5 pounds. Compare the ECHO specifications with the Popular Mechanics test; they are not identical configurations.
The DPB-2500 is especially appealing when a large battery would make a bigger blower tiring. It is capable on paved surfaces and ordinary lawn debris, and ECHO’s dealer network and five-year consumer tool warranty are meaningful ownership advantages.
It is not the right answer for every wet-leaf problem. Wet leaves lying on concrete are much easier than wet leaves pressed into tall grass. For that work, step up to the Ryobi, EGO, Husqvarna, or a backpack blower.
6. STIHL BGA 160: best constant-power and dealer-support option
Model: BGA 160
Best for: Existing STIHL AP owners and buyers who value dealer service and consistent output
Skip it if: You are comparing only independently measured performance or do not have access to a STIHL dealer
STIHL rates the BGA 160 at 21 Newtons and says its constant-power system maintains output as the battery depletes. It uses the professional-oriented AP battery system, a brushless motor, cruise control, IPX4 construction, and a 36V rated voltage. The STIHL product page has the current specifications.

With the cordless design, it is easy to cross the courtyard, living room and various crevices. It is suitable for lawn care, garden, yard, depot, car and house cleaning.
- [2 Batteries for Long Working Time] JAGROM cordless leaf blower packs with two 2.0Ah batteries and charger. You can totally get more than 30 minutes operating time with them. When one battery is charging, another one can be charged, you will not need to worry about running out of the power. Meet different kinds of the cleaning job needs.
- [2 Tubes for Different High of Use] There are two tubes in the package, they can easily install or disassemble. With 2 tubes set up, you can clean the floor without bending over. When using one tube, you can also easily complete the table top, railing cleaning. More ergonomic design can help clean more efficiently.
- [Lightweight and Quick Assembly] JAGROM cordless leaf blower with battery are only 2.6 pounds, reduce your cleaning burden and improve cleaning efficiency. Once you get the package, you just need to plug the tube in and then the blower can work.
- [Always Stand Behind the Products] There are one machine, two batteries, one charger and user manual in the package. Please store the battery in a cool and dry place, always use the original charger for charging, and should recharge it once every three months during long-term idle storage. We provide you with a 7x24 hours after-sale service and will work hard to get any product issue solved.
Constant output is a valuable feature in practice. A blower that gradually loses force as the battery empties can become frustrating when the last part of a cleanup is the heaviest. However, the public sources available for this comparison do not expose enough model-level Consumer Reports data to establish that the BGA 160 outperforms the Ryobi, EGO, Husqvarna, or Greenworks handhelds.
That makes the BGA 160 a platform-specific recommendation rather than the universal winner. If you already own compatible AP batteries, or you rely on STIHL’s dealer network for service, its constant-power design may matter more than a higher advertised CFM number from another brand. If you are starting from zero, compare the complete tool, battery, and charger cost before choosing it.
7. Milwaukee M18 FUEL: best compact blower for M18 owners
Models: 2724-21HD kit / 2724-20 bare tool
Best for: Patios, decks, gutters, garages, workshops, vehicles, and small yards
Skip it if: You have a large property, heavy wet leaves, or long seasonal cleanup sessions
The Milwaukee M18 FUEL is a compact tool, not a substitute for a large 40V-to-82V leaf blower. Milwaukee’s current product page lists 450 CFM and 120 MPH, high and low speed settings, a lock-on button, and compatibility with more than 200 M18 tools. The low setting is particularly useful when you need to clear debris without scattering mulch. See the current Milwaukee listing.
Popular Mechanics’ tested configuration produced 376 CFM, 87 MPH, 16 minutes 4 seconds of runtime, and a 6.7-pound operating weight. The difference between those figures and Milwaukee’s current 450 CFM/120 MPH specification illustrates the problem with mixing generations, batteries, nozzles, and test conditions. Confirm that a retailer’s listing identifies the same 2724 configuration before comparing numbers.

It is a poor value if you need to buy the entire M18 system only for leaf blowing. A higher-voltage platform will clear a large yard faster and handle wet, embedded leaves better.
8. ECHO DPB-5800T: best homeowner backpack blower
Model: DPB-5800T
Best for: Large residential properties, heavy leaf cover, and long sessions that cause handheld wrist fatigue
Skip it if: You mostly clear a patio, a small yard, stairs, or tight planting beds

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The ECHO DPB-5800T is a homeowner-friendly backpack design with enough output for serious seasonal cleanup. ECHO lists up to 795 CFM, 195 MPH, and 25 Newtons, three battery ports, variable speed, cruise control, and a turbo lock. The kit includes two 5Ah batteries and a dual-port charger. ECHO’s current page lists a 15-pound operating weight in that configuration, while other documentation lists different weights depending on the battery arrangement. Always check the exact configuration on the ECHO product page.
Popular Mechanics measured 608 CFM, 148 MPH, and 24 minutes 20 seconds of runtime. Its tested operating weight was 27.8 pounds, which again demonstrates why weight must be reported with the installed batteries and accessories rather than as a bare-tool figure. It found the DPB-5800T particularly effective at moving heavy leaves out of weeds and brush. See the full practical test.
A backpack shifts the motor and batteries from the wrist to the torso. That does not make the equipment light, but it makes sustained work much less tiring for many users. The trade-off is slower setup, more storage space, less maneuverability around vehicles and flower beds, and a higher kit cost.
For a homeowner with a large property, the DPB-5800T is more sensible than holding a 10-pound handheld at full power for an hour. For a small property, it is unnecessary equipment.
9. Ryobi 40V HP 850 CFM backpack: best-value backpack
Model: RY40HPLB02K
Best for: Homeowners who need backpack ergonomics and already use or want the Ryobi 40V platform
Skip it if: You need independently verified commercial output or want the lightest setup
Ryobi’s current 40V HP Whisper Series backpack is rated at 850 CFM. Ryobi claims more than two hours of runtime using two 40V 8Ah batteries and says it can exceed the performance of a 58cc gas backpack blower. The current kit is listed at $629 on Ryobi’s website at the time of this review. See the current Ryobi listing.
Popular Mechanics named a Ryobi 40V HP Whisper Series backpack its best-value backpack and measured 588 CFM, 142 MPH, 26 minutes 23 seconds of runtime, and 21.4 pounds with two 8Ah batteries. However, those results appear to correspond to an earlier or different backpack configuration than the current RY40HPLB02K 850-CFM SKU. They should not be merged with the current manufacturer rating as though they were a single test of the same model. See the Popular Mechanics results and confirm the exact model before publication or purchase.

- Enhanced Battery Power - Say goodbye to the tedium of leaf raking and back strain! Ditch the cord limitations and bulky noise of traditional leaf blower. Upgrade to the LAZYBOI battery-operated leaf blower with not one, but two powerful batteries, ensuring uninterrupted yard work efficiency. It's not just a tool; it's a thoughtful and practical present
- Advanced Turbo Technology - Unleash the power of advanced turbo technology with the LAZYBOI electric leaf blower, ramping up the maximum air speed to an impressive 150MPH. Although the turbo mode uses a lot of power (which drains the battery faster), it efficiently tackles dry leaves stubborn debris, making cleanup a breeze. Enjoy the lightweight and cordless design, ensuring a superior user experience. Perfect for quick cleanups around patios, driveways, garages, and small outdoor spaces
- Fast Charging & Continuous Power - Fed up with lengthy battery charging times? Get back to work fast with 1-hour charging. The LED turns red while charging and green when ready. Each 2.0Ah 21V battery provides up to 15 minutes on low or 10 minutes on high per charge. With two batteries included, swap and keep working for up to 30 minutes (low) or 20 minutes (high) total. Ideal for light yard work and routine home use
- Lightweight and Portable Design - Crafted for effortless maneuverability, LAZYBOI cordless leaf blower boasts a lightweight design for convenient one-handed operation. Weighing only about 3.5 lbs and featuring an ergonomic body, it reduces user fatigue by 30%. The upgraded rubber grip offers non-slip support, making your work easier and more comfortable
- Battery Care Assurance - Safety is paramount. That's why our batteries are equipped with overheat protection, ensuring consumer safety at all times. To maximize battery lifespan, we recommend fully charging before initial use and allowing a 5-minute cooldown period post-use to prevent overheating. While the battery can be stored for about a year when fully charged, we advise recharging every six months for optimal performance
The recommendation is based on the design and platform value, not on treating the older independent measurements as current-SKU proof. The backpack format, dual large-battery setup, and existing Ryobi ecosystem make this a logical step up from the Ryobi handheld for large residential cleanup.
10. Greenworks Commercial BB361 Optimus: best professional battery backpack
Model: BB361
Best for: Landscape crews, commercial properties, and very large residential lots
Skip it if: You only clear a typical suburban yard
The Greenworks Commercial BB361 is not a homeowner bargain blower. It is professional equipment designed to deliver sustained output, carry two batteries, and reduce the need for gas in commercial maintenance work.
Pro Tool Reviews tested the BB361 with two 82V 8Ah batteries and measured 36.9 Newtons on high, 26.3 Newtons on medium, and 19.6 Newtons on low. Runtime was 26 minutes 43 seconds on high, 41 minutes 53 seconds on medium, and 64 minutes 55 seconds on low. The tested operating weight was 31.9 pounds. Those are the most impressive independently measured Newton-force results in this comparison. Read the BB361 test.

See its battery-blower power roundup.
The BB361 is a realistic battery alternative for professional users whose work can be divided among batteries and charging periods. It is also a serious option for a very large property where time matters more than purchase price. But at nearly 32 pounds in the tested configuration, it is too heavy and expensive for ordinary homeowner use. Its inclusion should not cause a 10-pound handheld to be judged as inadequate; they serve different jobs.
The new EGO Commercial LBX1000: powerful on paper, not yet a tested winner
EGO Commercial’s LBX1000 deserves attention because it is one of the newest heavy-duty cordless blowers. EGO rates it at 1,000 CFM, 185 MPH, and 32 Newtons. The bare tool weighs 7.3 pounds, has IPX5 weather resistance, and is claimed to run for 100 minutes on low, 33 minutes on high, or 20 minutes on turbo with a 10Ah battery. EGO Commercial gives it a two-year commercial-use warranty when registered within 90 days. See the EGO Commercial LBX1000 page.
Those specifications make it a serious challenger to the EGO 880 and a potential heavy-duty handheld alternative to a backpack. They do not yet establish that it is the best blower in actual clearing work. Public independent testing is less extensive than for the Ryobi 800, EGO 880, Husqvarna 350iB, Greenworks BL60L512, or Greenworks BB361. Treat the LBX1000 as a model to test or as the most powerful handheld on paper—not as a verified 32-Newton result under a standardized independent method.
Handheld or backpack?
| Choose a handheld when… | Choose a backpack when… |
|---|---|
| You clear patios, driveways, decks, gutters, and small or medium lawns | You clear a large property or several hours of leaves |
| You need to maneuver around beds, stairs, vehicles, and fences | You routinely move heavy leaf piles or wet leaves embedded in grass |
| You prefer quick setup and compact storage | Handheld wrist and forearm fatigue limits your work |
| You want a lower initial kit cost | You need multiple batteries and sustained output |
A backpack is not automatically more powerful, but its harness changes how the power is delivered. The motor and battery weight rests on the torso instead of the hand, making long sessions easier for many users. In return, you get more bulk, more setup, a larger storage footprint, and usually a higher total system cost.
For most residential properties, start with a handheld. Move to a backpack when the cleanup duration, debris volume, or wrist fatigue—not merely the size of the lawn—justifies it.
CFM, MPH, and Newtons: which number matters?
- CFM is cubic feet per minute, or air volume. It generally helps move broad piles of leaves and loose debris.
- MPH is air velocity. A concentrated high-speed stream can help break loose embedded debris and direct leaves around obstacles.
- Newtons measure force. When independently measured with a disclosed method, Newton force can be more useful than comparing two manufacturers’ CFM claims.
Do not choose solely by the largest printed number. HGTV notes that manufacturers may measure CFM and MPH near the blower housing or at the end of the tube. A wide nozzle, narrow nozzle, battery size, and measurement distance can all change the result.
Use this hierarchy when comparing models:
- Real-world clearing performance on the debris you actually have.
- Independently measured Newton force, when the method and battery are disclosed.
- Independently measured airflow and airspeed under known conditions.
- Manufacturer CFM and MPH specifications, labeled as specifications rather than laboratory comparisons.
The Husqvarna 350iB illustrates the issue: its 800-CFM manufacturer rating and TechGearLab’s 1,105-CFM measurement at five inches from the nozzle are not directly interchangeable. The EGO 880 illustrates another issue: its output changes significantly with battery size.

Runtime reality: plan around useful power
Advertised runtime usually describes low-speed or eco-mode operation. Wet leaves, pine needles, and embedded debris require more power, so the relevant figures are maximum-power runtime and mixed-use runtime.
| Model and test configuration | Published or tested runtime | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Ryobi 800 with 8Ah battery | 11:37 Max Power; 15:13 Max Runtime in Pro Tool Reviews | High-output handheld work consumes a large battery quickly |
| EGO 880 with 4Ah battery | 12:35 on high in Pro Tool Reviews; approximately eight minutes estimated on continuous turbo | The kit battery is not the battery configuration that produced the highest measured force |
| ECHO DPB-5800T with two 5Ah batteries | 24:20 in Popular Mechanics | Backpack battery capacity supports longer heavy cleanup |
| ECHO DPB-2500 | ECHO claims 12 minutes WOT with 150Wh and 26 minutes with 250Wh | Battery energy and operating mode matter more than a single runtime claim |
| Greenworks BL60L512 with 5Ah battery | Up to 50 minutes at low speed according to Greenworks | Do not treat the low-speed figure as a high-power runtime |
| Greenworks BB361 with two 82V 8Ah batteries | 26:43 high; 41:53 medium; 64:55 low in Pro Tool Reviews | Professional output requires substantial battery capacity |
For a small property, a single battery may be adequate. For a medium property, a second battery is often more convenient than waiting for a recharge. For large properties or repeated commercial work, a backpack with multiple battery ports can be more practical than carrying several handheld batteries.
Remember that amp-hours are not directly comparable across voltage platforms. Battery energy is more meaningfully expressed in watt-hours, calculated approximately as volts multiplied by amp-hours, but even that does not predict runtime perfectly because motor efficiency, speed mode, and electronic controls differ.
Does a larger battery improve performance?
Usually, a larger battery increases runtime. It can also make a blower heavier, and on some high-output models it can increase peak output. Pro Tool Reviews measured the EGO 880 at 19.8 Newtons with a 4Ah battery, 24.3 Newtons with a 7.5Ah battery, and 29.4 Newtons with a 12Ah battery.
That means the largest battery is not automatically the best choice. Use a smaller pack when short sessions and low weight matter; use a larger pack when peak force or runtime matters; and consider two moderate batteries when carrying one very large battery would make a handheld uncomfortable.
Always compare:
- Battery model and amp-hour rating used in the test
- Tool weight with that battery installed
- Maximum-power runtime
- Normal working-speed runtime
- Replacement battery and charger cost
- Whether the battery can be shared with tools you already own
Battery-platform buying advice
The cheapest blower is often the one that fits a battery platform already in your garage, but platform compatibility must be exact.

- Ryobi 40V and Ryobi 18V ONE+ are separate systems. An 18V ONE+ battery does not become a 40V battery because the brand is the same.
- Greenworks 60V, 80V, and Commercial 82V are not automatically interchangeable. Confirm the specific tool and battery pairing on the manufacturer’s page.
- DeWalt FLEXVOLT batteries can operate in compatible 60V MAX and 20V MAX tools where DeWalt explicitly supports that use. See the DeWalt platform information.
- Milwaukee M18 and M12 are separate systems. The compact blower here uses M18 batteries.
- EGO 56V ARC Lithium batteries are intended for compatible EGO tools.
- STIHL AP batteries require compatible STIHL AP-system tools.
Before buying, write down the complete ownership cost: bare tool, kit price, replacement battery, charger, and second battery. A bare tool can be the right deal for an established platform. If you are starting from zero, the kit may be the better comparison even when the tool-only price looks attractive.
Noise: quieter than gas does not mean silent
Cordless blowers generally offer a more neighbor-friendly experience than gas blowers, but high-output battery models are still loud enough to require hearing protection. Noise claims are meaningful only when the measurement location and speed are known.
For example, Pro Tool Reviews measured the Ryobi 800 at 71 dBA on low and 75 dBA on high at the operator’s ear. Husqvarna lists a 79.4 dBA operator-ear sound-pressure rating for the 350iB. Those figures were not necessarily measured using identical instruments or conditions, so they should not be treated as a laboratory ranking. Consumer Reports measures at the ear and 50 feet, while Popular Mechanics reports measurements at the operator position and 75 feet.
Manufacturer claims that the Ryobi Whisper Series is 82% quieter than gas and the Ryobi backpack is 83% quieter than gas are useful directional claims, not substitutes for a stated dBA test at a stated distance. Check city and county rules before using any blower. Noise ordinances and seasonal gas-blower restrictions vary by location.
Wet leaves, pine needles, mulch, and gutters
Wet leaves
Yes, cordless blowers can handle wet leaves, but the surface matters. Wet leaves on concrete are considerably easier than wet leaves pressed into tall grass. For difficult debris, favor high measured force, a narrow concentrator nozzle, and a battery that can sustain the required output. The EGO 880 with a larger battery, Ryobi 800, Husqvarna 350iB, and the backpack models are better candidates than the Milwaukee M18.
Consumer Reports specifically tests loosening debris embedded in grass rather than relying only on dry-leaf sweeping. That is a more useful test for homeowners with mature trees. Read its testing explanation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePine needles and grass clippings
Pine needles and damp clippings reveal whether a blower has useful concentrated airflow. A high CFM figure alone does not guarantee that it will lift debris from grass or move it out of planting beds. Use the narrow nozzle carefully, and avoid directing full turbo power into loose mulch.
Mulch and flower beds
If the blower moves mulch, lower the speed, use the variable trigger or cruise control, and aim across the surface rather than directly into the bed. The Milwaukee M18’s low setting is specifically useful for controlled cleanup. The Ryobi, Husqvarna, EGO, Greenworks, and STIHL models also provide the variable control needed for delicate work.
Gutters and roofs
A handheld blower can be useful for ground-level gutter cleanup with an appropriate extension, but a large high-output blower may be awkward from a ladder. Popular Mechanics found the Husqvarna 350iB useful for gutter work but awkward on a ladder, while it found the Ryobi 800 too large for comfortable ladder operation.
Do not climb a ladder while trying to control a heavy, high-torque blower if a ground-based extension or professional gutter service is safer. Avoid roof use in wet or slippery conditions, follow the manual, wear eye protection, and keep people, pets, windows, and vehicles clear of discharged debris.

What these blowers cannot do
Most high-output models in this comparison are dedicated blowers. They do not automatically vacuum, collect, or mulch leaves. If your goal is to reduce leaves into a bag or compost stream, shop for a separate cordless blower-vac/mulcher category. Do not infer vacuum capability from a high CFM rating.
Safety and ownership checklist
- Wear eye protection and hearing protection, especially at high or turbo speed.
- Keep people, pets, open windows, vehicles, and fragile decorations away from the discharge path.
- Do not blow dust, gravel, or debris toward a road, sidewalk, or another person.
- Inspect the intake and tube before use; clothing or debris near the intake can reduce performance.
- Use lower power around mulch, gravel, flower beds, and newly seeded areas.
- Use stable, ground-based gutter methods whenever possible instead of operating a heavy blower on a ladder.
- Follow the manufacturer’s charging, storage, temperature, and weather instructions. IPX4 or IPX5 weather resistance does not mean waterproof operation or submersion.
- Remove and store batteries as directed, keep contacts clean and dry, and do not use a battery that is swollen, damaged, or unusually hot.
- Check local noise ordinances and seasonal restrictions before operating the blower.
Alternatives worth considering
- Corded electric blower: Often the lowest-cost solution for a small yard near an outlet, provided the cord is acceptable.
- Rake: The quietest option and still practical for small areas or sensitive neighborhoods.
- Cordless blower-vac/mulcher: Better when collection and volume reduction matter more than maximum blowing force.
- Gas backpack blower: Still relevant for sustained professional work where rapid refueling and long continuous duty outweigh noise, maintenance, emissions, and local restrictions.
How to choose your specific model
- Identify the debris. Dry leaves and grass clippings need less force than wet leaves embedded in tall grass or pine needles.
- Estimate a real work session. Compare maximum-power and mixed-use runtime, not only the manufacturer’s low-speed maximum.
- Choose the format. Use a handheld for maneuverability and short sessions; use a backpack for heavy, prolonged work.
- Check the existing battery platform. A compatible battery may lower total cost, but do not accept a compact blower that is inadequate for your property merely because you own that brand.
- Compare operating weight. Include the battery. Bare-tool weight is not the weight you hold or carry.
- Check service and warranty. Greenworks lists four years for the BL60L512 tool and battery; ECHO offers a five-year consumer tool warranty for the DPB-2500; and EGO Commercial lists a two-year commercial-use warranty for the LBX1000 when registered within 90 days. Confirm current terms and exclusions.
- Verify the model number. Do not mix Ryobi’s 730 and 800 CFM handhelds, Ryobi’s 730 and 850 CFM backpacks, EGO’s 765, 880, and commercial 1,000 CFM models, or Greenworks’ 60V, 80V, and 82V lines.
Bottom line: Buy the Ryobi 40V HP 800 CFM for the best all-around residential balance. Buy the EGO 880 when maximum handheld force is the priority, but budget for the battery that can deliver it. Choose the Greenworks BL60L512 for value, the ECHO DPB-2500 for lower weight, the Husqvarna 350iB for premium control, or the STIHL BGA 160 when AP batteries and dealer service are central. For large properties, move to the ECHO DPB-5800T or Ryobi backpack; for professional output, the Greenworks Commercial BB361 is the most convincing independently tested choice in this group.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a cordless leaf blower replace a gas blower?
For most residential work, yes. Current high-output cordless models can match or outperform gas blowers in relevant sweeping and embedded-debris tests while being easier to start, easier to maintain, and generally quieter. A professional battery backpack is a more appropriate gas replacement than a compact handheld for long commercial sessions; gas can still make sense where sustained output and rapid refueling are essential and legally permitted.
Is CFM or MPH more important on a leaf blower?
Neither number is sufficient by itself. CFM describes air volume and helps with broad piles; MPH describes velocity and helps with concentrated airflow. Independently measured Newton force and real-world clearing performance are more useful when available, because manufacturers do not use one universal location or method for measuring CFM and MPH.

How long will a cordless leaf blower run at full power?
Usually much less time than the advertised low-speed maximum. Independent tests measured about 11 to 15 minutes for the Ryobi 800 with an 8Ah battery, about 12 minutes on high for the EGO 880 with a 4Ah battery, and about 24 minutes for the ECHO DPB-5800T with two 5Ah batteries. Actual runtime depends on battery size, speed mode, debris, temperature, and battery condition.
Do larger batteries make a cordless blower more powerful?
Not always, but some high-output blowers respond significantly to battery size. Pro Tool Reviews measured the EGO 880 at 19.8 Newtons with a 4Ah battery, 24.3 Newtons with a 7.5Ah battery, and 29.4 Newtons with a 12Ah battery. Larger batteries add runtime and may add peak force, but they also add weight and cost.
Can I use any battery from the same brand?
No. Battery platforms are usually specific even within one brand. Ryobi 18V ONE+ and 40V are separate; Greenworks 60V, 80V, and Commercial 82V batteries should not be assumed interchangeable; and Milwaukee M18 and M12 are separate systems. Confirm compatibility for the exact tool and battery model.
Can cordless leaf blowers move wet leaves?
Yes, if the blower has enough useful force and the leaves are not deeply embedded in tall grass. Wet leaves on pavement are easier than wet leaves in grass. A narrow nozzle and a larger battery can help, while compact blowers such as the Milwaukee M18 are better suited to light cleanup than heavy wet-leaf work.
Can I use a leaf blower to clean gutters from a ladder?
Use caution. A powerful blower can be awkward and produce torque when operated from a ladder. Ground-based gutter extensions are preferable where possible. Follow the manual, maintain stable footing, use eye protection, and avoid roof or ladder work in wet or slippery conditions.
The Bottom Line
The best cordless leaf blower for most homeowners is the Ryobi 40V HP Whisper Series 800 CFM. It has the strongest overall balance of measured performance, control, platform value, and manageable noise. Choose the EGO 880 for maximum residential handheld output, the Greenworks BL60L512 for value, the ECHO DPB-2500 for lower weight, or the Husqvarna 350iB for premium airflow control. If the property demands long, heavy cleanup, a backpack is the better tool: ECHO for homeowners, Ryobi for value, and Greenworks Commercial BB361 for professional output.
