Temporary Detour Signs vs. Navigation Apps: Which Should Drivers Follow?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow the temporary detour signs, road markings, barricades and directions from authorized traffic-control personnel. Use a navigation app as secondary information for traffic conditions and possible alternate routes, never as permission to enter a closed road. If the app and the signs conflict, obey the controls you can see at the scene and reassess only after stopping somewhere legal and safe.

This guidance is based on U.S. federal standards, especially the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), 11th Edition, December 2023. Traffic laws, sign designs and enforcement procedures differ by jurisdiction, so local requirements control outside that framework.

The rule in one sentence

A posted closure or detour is an on-site traffic control; a navigation app is a route-assistance tool. The on-site control determines what you may do at that location.

Do not drive past a “Road Closed” sign, barricade, police direction or other control because an app still draws a route through the blocked section. Follow the marked detour, then let the app recalculate once you are safely on an open road.

Why temporary signs take priority

They describe the condition that exists now

A temporary sign is installed for a specific work zone, crash, flood, event or other obstruction. It tells approaching drivers what the road authority requires at that point: slow down, merge, stop, turn, use a detour or avoid the road entirely. The sign is therefore tied to the physical condition you are encountering, not to an earlier map database or a predicted route.

What the U.S. MUTCD requires

FHWA’s 2023 MUTCD, 11th Edition, Chapter 6I, states: Each detour shall be adequately marked with standard temporary route signs and destination signs. The manual describes a detour as a temporary route that bypasses a closed section and reconnects with the highway beyond the temporary traffic-control zone.

FHWA’s Interpretation Letter 6(09)-42 (I), “Signing for Rerouting Due to Traffic Incidents,” explains that temporary traffic control guides motorists around an incident. Those detour signs remain while the activity requiring the detour continues and are removed when the detour ends. This is U.S. guidance, not a universal legal rule for every country.

Authorized people can control traffic directly

A flagger, police officer, transportation worker or other authorized person may give instructions that supplement or temporarily replace signs. Follow the direction applicable in your jurisdiction. If an instruction seems unclear, stop only where directed or where it is safe and legal, and ask for clarification rather than improvising around a barricade.

What a navigation app can contribute

Useful information before and during a trip

Google Maps’ official help describes traffic layers, incident alerts, turn-by-turn directions, user reports and route updates when a different route becomes available. Reports can include construction and lane closures. These features can help you plan earlier, estimate delays and identify a legal alternative before you reach a work zone.

Availability varies by country, region, platform and feature. An incident may not have been reported, may be reported late, or may have been cleared before the map updates. A route line also does not prove that every road segment is open to your vehicle at the moment you arrive.

What an app cannot authorize

  • It cannot overrule a road-closed sign, barricade, temporary signal, lane-control device or lawful instruction from traffic personnel.
  • It cannot guarantee that a suggested road is open, suitable for your vehicle, legal for your direction of travel or safe for current weather and construction conditions.
  • It cannot justify a sudden turn, illegal U-turn, shoulder maneuver or stop in a live lane.
  • It cannot replace your duty to watch the roadway, signs, workers, pedestrians and other vehicles.

Google’s directions guidance states: When in doubt, follow actual traffic regulations and confirm signage from the road or path that you’re on. That is the correct operating principle whenever the screen and the road appear to disagree.

Signs and apps compared

Question Temporary signs and traffic controls Navigation app
Primary purpose Direct traffic through or around a current closure, work zone or incident. Suggest a route and provide changing traffic information.
Authority at the scene Controls the driver’s immediate legal movement, subject to local law and authorized instructions. Advisory route assistance; it has no authority to reopen a controlled road.
Information timing Placed for the condition drivers are encountering now. Updated from map data, traffic feeds and reports; timing and coverage vary.
Typical detail Turns, destinations, lane shifts, speed or stopping requirements and the path around a closure. Estimated travel time, congestion, incidents, turn-by-turn prompts and alternate routes.
Main limitation Signs can be missed, obscured, poorly spaced or difficult to interpret in complex construction layouts. May lag, omit a closure, show a road that is restricted, or offer a route unsuitable for the vehicle or conditions.
Best use Follow continuously while driving through the controlled area. Plan ahead and reassess from a safe stopped location.

The official materials do not establish a numerical accuracy rate for either signs or apps, nor do they provide a measured crash comparison. Treat claims of a universal percentage advantage with skepticism unless a separate, clearly described study supports them.

What to do when the app and signs disagree

Case 1: The road is physically closed

  1. Reduce speed and look for the complete closure message, barricade, cones, arrow board and detour destination.
  2. Do not enter the controlled area, drive around the barricade or follow the app’s line through the closure.
  3. Follow the signed detour until you are beyond the temporary traffic-control zone.
  4. Once stopped safely or back on an open route, allow the app to recalculate.

A route shown on the screen is not evidence that a barricade is optional. Entering can expose you to workers, equipment, opposing traffic, unstable pavement, flooding or emergency operations.

Case 2: The app proposes another route before the closure

An alternate route may be reasonable if it is open, legal, suitable for your vehicle and reachable without an unsafe maneuver. Check the signs first, maintain lane control and take the alternate only when you can do so normally. Do not cross solid lines, stop in a travel lane or make a last-second turn simply to satisfy the app.

Case 3: The detour seems to disappear

Continue slowly while scanning for the next temporary route or destination sign. Detours often use several decisions rather than one turn. If you miss a turn, continue to a safe location and reroute; never reverse or back up on a roadway to recover it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Case 4: A person directs you differently

Follow the instruction of an authorized traffic controller in accordance with local law. A worker may be managing a lane closure that the app cannot represent, or may be temporarily releasing traffic in a sequence. Keep the phone down and watch for the next control.

Case 5: The app has no signal or gives conflicting prompts

Continue using visible signs, pavement markings and lawful instructions. If you cannot identify the next safe movement, pull completely off the active roadway at a legal stopping place before consulting an offline map or calling for help.

A safe procedure for drivers

  1. Prepare before moving. Enter the destination, review the overview and note likely construction or incident areas while parked.
  2. Set the phone where you do not need to hold it. Start voice guidance before departure and comply with hands-free and distracted-driving laws.
  3. Scan the road, not just the display. Look well ahead for orange work-zone signs, route shields, destination names, arrows, lane markings, cones and flaggers.
  4. Obey each temporary control. A lower speed, lane shift or stop requirement applies even when the app shows an uninterrupted route.
  5. Use the detour’s destination names. Compare the sign’s stated road or town with the app only as a confirmation, not as a replacement for the sign sequence.
  6. Recalculate only when safe. If the route no longer matches conditions, stop in a parking area, rest area or other legal location before touching the device.
  7. Return to normal navigation after the zone. Once the closure is behind you and the route is clearly open, the app can again optimize for traffic and travel time.

How to read a temporary detour

Follow the sequence, not a single arrow

A detour may include an advance warning, a turn sign, a confirmation sign and a destination sign. Missing one sign does not authorize you to invent a shortcut. Continue looking for the next standard temporary route sign and verify that the destination generally matches the announced bypass.

Distinguish a lane closure from a full closure

A lane-closure sign may require a merge while the road remains open. A road-closed or bridge-closed control requires a different response: remain outside the closure and use the signed bypass. Cones, drums, arrow boards and temporary signals may further restrict lanes even when a map still displays the original roadway.

Expect changing layouts

Construction stages can move a merge, shift a lane or change access to a turn. The sign installed for the current stage is more relevant than a route that was valid yesterday. Slow down early enough to read the full message and avoid abrupt lane changes.

Construction-zone examples

Bridge replacement with a signed town detour

The app displays the bridge as the fastest path, but “Bridge Closed—Detour” signs direct traffic to a parallel road and identify the destination beyond the bridge. Take the signed road. The app can be allowed to recalculate after the bypass begins.

Night paving with a live traffic escort

A worker holds traffic while equipment crosses the roadway. The map may show no incident because the restriction is short-lived. Follow the worker’s stop-and-go instruction and do not attempt to pass, turn around or use the shoulder.

One lane open under temporary signals

The route is not fully closed, but temporary signals may release traffic in alternating directions. Obey the signal and queue; an app’s estimated delay is not a reason to enter on red or use an adjacent closed lane.

Local access remains open

A “Road Closed Ahead” sign may allow access only to residents, businesses or emergency services. Unless you meet the stated exception and local law permits entry, use the detour. Do not assume that a destination pin grants an exemption.

Common mistakes and the safer correction

Mistake Why it is unsafe Better response
Driving around a barricade because the map route continues May place you in an active work area or emergency scene. Stop before the control and follow the marked bypass.
Watching the phone while approaching a confusing turn Reduces attention when workers, cones and lane shifts demand it. Continue cautiously or stop at a safe location before checking.
Making a sudden U-turn or lane change for a faster route Can cause a collision and may violate markings or local law. Stay on the current legal path until a normal, safe turn is available.
Assuming a missing app closure means the road is open Reports and map updates are not complete everywhere. Treat the physical restriction as controlling.
Assuming every detour sign is permanent Temporary routes change when work or incident operations end. Follow current signs and normal regulations; do not rely on yesterday’s memory.

Jurisdiction and legal limits

The MUTCD is a U.S. national baseline for traffic-control devices, not a substitute for state, tribal, municipal or territorial law. Sign colors, wording, enforcement powers and rules for authorized personnel can differ. Outside the United States, consult the road authority for the country or region where you are driving before treating a specific sign as a legal requirement.

Even within the United States, unusual incidents can produce instructions not covered by a single general rule. Emergency responders and transportation agencies may temporarily change traffic patterns. The practical obligation remains the same: follow the lawful control presented at the scene and avoid entering a restricted area.

Using navigation apps without creating a distraction

  • Program the trip and inspect the route while parked.
  • Use spoken prompts and a securely mounted device where permitted.
  • Do not report an incident, type a correction or search for a new destination while moving. Google’s help guidance says incident reporting should be done only when safe.
  • If a passenger is available, let that person handle the screen while the driver watches the road.
  • Pull fully out of traffic before accepting an alternate route or investigating why the app has not updated.

Driver checklist for a signed detour

  • Have I identified whether this is a lane restriction or a complete closure?
  • What destination or road name does the next temporary sign show?
  • Is a flagger, police officer or other authorized person directing traffic?
  • Can I make the app’s suggested movement without crossing a restriction or making a sudden maneuver?
  • If I am uncertain, where is the nearest legal place to stop before checking the phone?
  • After the detour, am I back on an open road before asking the app to optimize the trip?

Bottom line for construction and incident driving

Temporary detour signs and other traffic controls are the authoritative instructions at the roadway. Navigation apps add useful, changing information about congestion and possible routes, but they cannot see or overrule every condition and they do not grant access through a closure. Follow the signs, obey authorized personnel, keep your attention on the road and use the app only from a safe stopped position when the route needs reassessment.
