A-frame signs

Temporary Business Signs: Compare Materials, Sizes, Placement, and Display Rules

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right temporary business sign depends less on a universal “best” material than on four local decisions: who must see the message, how much surface you need, where the sign may sit, and how long it may remain. A-frame (sandwich-board) signs suit pedestrian traffic near an entrance; banners provide a larger temporary message where attachment is allowed; window signs use the storefront itself but may be limited by coverage, location, or duration.

There is no universal legal size. Municipal rules differ sharply: Toronto, Alameda, Portland, and Harrisburg publish different dimensions, clearances, materials, and operating hours. Treat those figures as examples for those jurisdictions, not as a code-compliant design for another address. Confirm the current rule with the authority having jurisdiction before ordering or installing a sign.

Compare the three temporary sign formats

Format Best use Typical decision points Main compliance risk
A-frame or sandwich board Short-range, pedestrian-facing messages beside a business entrance Footprint, sidewalk clearance, stability, display hours, and whether public right-of-way use is allowed Blocking an accessible route or exceeding local portable-sign dimensions
Banner Large temporary promotions visible from a street, parking area, or yard Material, finishing, attachment method, district, location, and maximum duration Unsafe or unapproved attachment, sagging material, or a banner left up beyond its permitted period
Window sign Messages read through or on the storefront glazing Interior versus exterior placement, percentage of window coverage, and duration Violating glazing-coverage, zoning, or temporary-display limits

Raleigh describes an A-frame as a temporary freestanding sign used to attract pedestrian traffic. That description explains the format’s purpose, but the lawful placement and size come from the local code. A banner or window graphic is not automatically governed by the same provisions as an A-frame.

A-frame signs: construction and practical limits

Materials and message panels

Harrisburg, North Carolina, lists plastic, metal, wood, melamine, and chalkboard among the materials allowed for A-frame fabrication in its June 2023 temporary-sign guide. The same guide limits the message portion to no more than 6 square feet per side. Those are Harrisburg rules, not a ranking of material durability or a national product standard. Select a surface that can tolerate the intended weather and can be weighted or braced without creating a trip hazard, then verify that the finished sign meets the local construction rule.

Published size examples

Authority Published A-frame or portable-sign limit Important qualification
City of Toronto 0.6 m wide × 1 m high × 0.75 m long One sign per business location is noted, along with other licensing conditions.
City of Alameda Up to 4 ft high and 3 ft wide The guide also sets a placement zone and separate timing rules for temporary signs.
City of Portland Up to 8 sq ft in the sidewalk or street area; up to 12 sq ft on private property; public-right-of-way limits of 4 ft high and 2.5 ft wide The page states registration is not needed beginning July 25, 2026; verify the current code because this is time-sensitive.

These figures cannot be averaged into a “safe” sign size. A sign that fits Alameda’s dimensional envelope could still be unlawful in Toronto or Portland, and a private-property allowance may not apply once the sign occupies a sidewalk or street area.

Banners: materials, finishing, and attachment

Harrisburg’s construction specification

Harrisburg’s sign standards specify vinyl scrim of at least 13 ounces or vinyl mesh of at least 9 ounces for banners. The standards call for professional printing, hems, and grommets on at least four connective corners. For a yard banner, they describe heavy metal stakes; bungee cord or a similar material is used to keep the banner taut. This level of detail shows why a banner’s fabric alone is not the whole compliance question: edge reinforcement, connection points, and support hardware matter as well.

The Harrisburg ordinance text surfaced as an adopted version amended January 10, 2005. Check that the provision remains current before treating it as a purchasing specification. Do not assume that a 13-ounce scrim banner is acceptable everywhere, or that a banner designed for a fence may be moved to a building wall without a different approval.

Where a banner can go

Before ordering an outdoor vinyl banner, identify the proposed support: wall, fence, yard, temporary frame, or another structure. Local rules may distinguish those locations and may impose separate requirements for attachment, setbacks, illumination, or wind exposure. A banner that can be installed on private property may be prohibited in a public right-of-way, and a district rule can shorten the display period even when the material is acceptable.

Window signs: use the glass, check the coverage rule

Window signs can be printed film, paper, paint, or another approved graphic, but the legal distinction is often whether the sign is inside or outside the glass and how much of the window it covers. Centennial’s temporary-sign information distinguishes interior from exterior window signs and gives different display durations by district and material. Alameda also lists local timing and size provisions for temporary signs. Because those rules are location-specific, measure the actual glazing, identify the sign’s position relative to the glass, and ask the planning or building department which category applies before installation.

A window sign may avoid sidewalk-obstruction concerns, but it can still trigger zoning, visibility, lighting, or building-owner restrictions. If the storefront is leased, obtain the landlord’s written approval in addition to municipal approval.

Placement: protect the accessible path first

Public sidewalk versus private property

Portland explicitly distinguishes portable signs in a public right-of-way from signs on private property. That distinction affects both allowable area and height. Other cities may require a permit, registration, license, or proof that the business occupies the adjacent premises. Determine the property line and right-of-way boundary rather than relying on where the pavement appears to end.

Toronto’s clearway model

Toronto requires a 2.1 m pedestrian clearway on sidewalks, expanding to 2.5 m on certain downtown streets. Its guidance says A-frames should be beside the curb and aligned with other street furniture where possible, and that they may be displayed only during business hours. The clearway is an access requirement, not merely a suggested setback: measure the unobstructed route after accounting for poles, trees, benches, café furniture, snow, and other signs.

Alameda’s placement-zone model

Alameda places portable A-frames within the first 3 ft of sidewalk measured from the building face. That approach differs from Toronto’s curb-side guidance. It illustrates why moving a sign a few feet can change compliance even when the sign itself has not changed.

Site checks before installation

  • Measure the unobstructed pedestrian route at the narrowest point, including the sign’s feet, ballast, and any open door swing.
  • Check whether the surface is level enough to prevent tipping and whether wind, rain, or snow requires additional restraint.
  • Keep the sign clear of curb ramps, tactile warning surfaces, fire connections, utility covers, transit stops, and emergency access.
  • Confirm that the proposed placement is on the business’s property or is expressly allowed in the public right-of-way.

Display hours, duration, permits, and zoning

Operating time can be as important as physical size. Harrisburg’s A-frame guide allows display during normal business hours, or until 10 p.m. for a 24-hour business. Toronto likewise limits A-frames to business hours. Store the sign inside when the permitted period ends; leaving it outside overnight can create a violation even if the daytime placement is compliant.

Alameda lists a 30-day maximum for some temporary-sign categories and a 25-square-foot limit for seasonal sale signs. Centennial provides different banner durations by district and material. Those examples are not interchangeable calendars. Ask which category covers the message, whether the clock starts on installation or approval, and whether a renewal is available.

NYC’s Department of Buildings summarizes the broader framework: business-sign requirements can depend on zoning district, sign type, location, projection, illumination, and permits. Even a temporary sign can therefore require more than a dimension check. A construction or property manager should obtain the applicable zoning and building guidance for the exact address and retain any permit, registration, or owner authorization with the project records.

How to choose the format for a specific message

  1. Define the viewing distance. Use an A-frame for people already walking past the entrance. Use a banner when the message must be read from a road, parking lot, or larger setback. Use a window sign when the storefront glazing is the intended viewing plane.
  2. Identify the legal surface. Mark whether the sign is inside the building, attached to private land, mounted to a fence or wall, or placed in a public right-of-way.
  3. Check the local category. Search the municipality’s current sign, zoning, and right-of-way pages, then call the issuing office if the sign combines categories, such as a banner on a temporary frame.
  4. Design to the most restrictive measured condition. Account for total footprint, projection, clearance, height, message area, attachment hardware, and the occupied hours—not just the printed panel.
  5. Plan removal and storage. Assign who removes the sign at closing, during severe weather, at the end of the approved period, or when construction changes the accessible route.

Ordering and installation checklist

  • Write the address, jurisdiction, zoning district if known, property owner, sign type, dimensions, materials, lighting, proposed location, and display dates on one approval sheet.
  • For an A-frame, specify the outside dimensions, each message panel, hinge or brace arrangement, non-slip feet, and any ballast. Confirm that the ballast does not expand the prohibited footprint or create a trip point.
  • For a banner, specify the fabric weight, mesh or scrim type, hem, grommet positions, support spacing, tie material, and wind plan. Never rely on adhesive tape or improvised wire where the local standard calls for reinforced edges and secure connections.
  • For a window graphic, record the percentage and dimensions of covered glazing, whether it is inside or outside, the installation and removal method, and the approved display period.
  • Photograph the installed sign and the clear pedestrian route. Recheck the route after nearby work, outdoor seating, deliveries, snow, or landscaping changes.

Common mistakes and recovery steps

The sign fits the product description but not the site

Manufacturers may advertise a panel size without counting feet, braces, projection, or ballast. Measure the complete assembled sign and compare it with the local definition of area and height. If it exceeds the rule, reduce the assembly or relocate it to a site with a different, documented allowance; do not trim the sign after installation and assume the footprint is compliant.

A banner is secure but unauthorized

Strong attachment does not substitute for permission. Stop installation, confirm whether the wall, fence, or yard is an allowed location, and obtain the required owner or municipal approval. If the ordinance specifies scrim, mesh, hems, grommets, or stakes, order to that specification rather than adapting an indoor banner.

The display period expired

Remove the sign promptly, record the removal date, and ask whether a new application is required. Do not roll an expired temporary sign into a new promotion without confirming the reset or renewal rule.

The sign narrows an accessible route

Move it immediately to restore the measured clearway, then remeasure with all street furniture and doors operating normally. If no compliant location remains, use a window sign or an approved private-property placement instead of forcing an A-frame into the sidewalk.

What to verify before you buy

Use generic product searches such as “A-frame sidewalk sign” or “outdoor vinyl banner” only to compare construction options. The official sources do not establish a universal price, a particular seller, or performance results for any listing. Confirm the assembled dimensions, fabric specification, finishing, hardware, weather exposure, and return policy against the written local requirements. A low-cost sign that must be replaced after a failed inspection is not a savings.

Finally, verify the current municipal text immediately before publication or installation. Portland’s page notes a registration change effective July 25, 2026, and the Harrisburg banner ordinance surfaced as an older amended version. Local rules can change without changing the physical appearance of the sign; the approval record should always identify the date and authority used.
