The short answer
A posted detour is the route selected and signed to carry drivers around a temporary closure or traffic-control zone. Continue following its markers until they show that the detour ends or that you have rejoined the regular route.

The controlling instruction is the most immediate official one: a barrier, a closure sign, a temporary signal, a uniformed controller, or a detour arrow. If a later sign appears inconsistent with an earlier one, do not drive through a closed work area while trying to resolve the inconsistency.
What each route means
Posted detour
Detour signs reroute road users around a temporary traffic-control zone or another closure. The U.S. Federal Highway Administration describes detour signing this way: “Detour signing is for rerouting traffic around a temporary traffic control zone. The signs are in place only for the duration of the activity necessitating the detour.”
Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation driver handbook likewise tells drivers to follow detour markers until they return to the regular route. A detour is therefore a managed route, not merely a suggestion from a map application or a convenient-looking side road.
Temporary access to a construction or roadworks site
The United Kingdom Department for Transport’s guidance, updated 5 December 2023, labels one sign “Temporary access to a construction or road works site.” That wording describes the destination and function of the entrance: it provides access to the works.
Whether other drivers may use that entrance depends on the project’s traffic-control arrangements, any additional signs, and instructions from authorized personnel. The access sign alone does not convert a works entrance into a public detour.
What a temporary access sign can—and cannot—tell you
The word “access” describes movement into a place, not necessarily movement through it. A works entrance can be intended for site vehicles while the public road remains closed. It can also be opened to ordinary traffic for a particular period if the traffic-control plan and on-site instructions expressly make that change. Because both situations are possible, neither assumption is safe: do not treat every access road as forbidden in all circumstances, but do not treat any access sign as automatic permission either.
Read the complete sign assembly rather than one large word. Look for a detour symbol, route number, arrow, vehicle-class instruction, time condition, or a message saying that public traffic is being directed through the entrance. A small supplementary panel may limit access even when the roadway looks broad and finished. If the sign only identifies construction or roadworks access and gives no public direction, stay on the signed detour.
Decision sequence at the closure
- Recognize the closure. Treat the road as closed when a closure sign, barrier, cones arranged to block the lane, temporary signal, or traffic controller indicates that it is closed. Do not proceed simply because you can see an access road beyond the barrier.
- Find the first detour instruction. Look for the detour symbol, arrow, route shield, or temporary direction sign. Read the whole panel, including vehicle restrictions, lane information, and temporary speed limits.
- Follow every marker. Continue from one detour sign to the next. Do not leave the signed route for an unsigned shortcut unless an authorized controller clearly directs you to do so.
- Assess any access-road sign carefully. If it says temporary access to a construction or roadworks site, assume it serves the work site unless another sign or an authorized controller expressly directs public traffic onto it.
- Obey work-zone controls. Slow down, expect lanes and priorities to change, and follow temporary signals and speed limits. Ontario’s handbook warns drivers entering a construction zone to use extra caution and be prepared for a lower speed limit.
- Resolve uncertainty safely. If signs are missing, blocked, contradictory, or impossible to read, stop only in a safe, legal location. Ask the traffic controller or the responsible road authority rather than entering the closed area.
How to interpret the controls you encounter
Closure signs and barriers
A physical barrier or an explicit road-closed instruction takes precedence over a driver’s assumption that the road is passable. Barriers may protect workers, unfinished pavement, excavations, equipment movements, or a lane arrangement that changes further ahead. Do not move, drive around, or pass a barrier unless an authorized controller directs you and the movement is visibly controlled.

Detour arrows and route markers
A detour arrow normally tells you where to turn next, not that the detour has ended. Check for the next marker after every turn, especially at intersections where a permanent street sign could be mistaken for the temporary route. Continue until a sign indicates the end of the detour or returns you to the regular route.
Temporary access signs
Access signage can identify an entrance for construction traffic without describing the legal status of the road for everyone else. A driver may see a wide, graded, or apparently public road and still be prohibited from entering. Look for language that specifies public access, a traffic-control direction, vehicle classes, hours, or an escort requirement. If none is present, remain on the posted detour.
Traffic controllers and temporary signals
A person directing traffic or a temporary signal provides immediate control at the work zone. Follow the controller’s visible instruction even if a permanent sign points another way. Do not stop in a live lane to debate the instruction; proceed only when directed and when the movement is safe.

Posted detour and temporary access compared
| Feature | Posted detour | Temporary works-site access |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Reroutes road users around a temporary closure or traffic-control zone. | Provides an entrance serving a construction or roadworks site. |
| Who it is for | Drivers directed by the temporary traffic-control plan. | Work-site users or other traffic specifically authorized by the site’s controls. |
| What the sign establishes | A signed route to follow around the affected area. | The location or function of access to the works; the sign alone does not establish public permission. |
| How long it applies | For the activity requiring the detour; FHWA says the signs remain only for that duration. | For the period and conditions set by the work site’s traffic-control arrangements. |
| What the driver should do | Follow each marker until the regular route is regained or the detour ends. | Use it only when clear signage or authorized personnel direct public traffic onto it. |
How to compare route options without guessing
If more than one road appears available, compare only information that is current and official. First ask whether the route is open to your vehicle class. Next check whether signs, barriers, and controllers direct traffic onto it. Then check legal restrictions and physical clearance, including any stated height, width, weight, length, or hazardous-load limits. Confirm that the closure status has not changed. Travel time may be considered only when it comes from a current, credible source; an app’s estimate is not authority to enter a closed road.
This order matters because a shorter route is irrelevant if it is not authorized or cannot accommodate the vehicle. A route that looks suitable on a map can have a temporary restriction at the next junction. Conversely, a works entrance may be usable for public traffic only under an instruction that is visible at the site. If you cannot verify those conditions, continue on the marked detour or obtain directions from the road authority.
Check whether the detour fits your vehicle
A posted route is not a guarantee that every vehicle can use every segment under every condition. Before committing to a turn, read restrictions for vehicle class, weight, height, width, length, hazardous loads, or local access. A route designed for ordinary passenger traffic may not accommodate a high vehicle, a heavy combination, a bus, or a vehicle towing a trailer.
Austroads’ Guide to Temporary Traffic Management Part 3: Static Worksites (2021) says detours should use roads capable of handling the volume and type of traffic that would normally use the closed road. That is design guidance for road authorities. It does not give a driver permission to select an unsigned shortcut or override a restriction.

For drivers of larger or unusual vehicles
Check the vehicle information before reaching the closure, not after turning into a narrow temporary lane. Know the vehicle’s actual height, width, length, weight, and any hazardous-load classification, then compare those details with the temporary signs. A restriction may apply to one vehicle class while allowing another. If the sign is unclear, ask for an approved route rather than relying on a visible clearance or following another vehicle.
Before setting out
For a planned journey, check the current closure notice from the relevant road authority and allow time to read temporary signs at the site. A notice can identify the affected road, but it does not replace the controls that drivers meet on the ground. Conditions may change after a traffic-control plan is installed, so obey the newest visible instruction.
Set navigation equipment before moving and treat its route as supplementary information. A mapping service may not know that a barrier has been placed or that a works entrance is restricted. If the device proposes a turn that conflicts with a detour arrow or closure sign, follow the temporary control and stop only at a safe location if you need to reset the route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDrivers responsible for passengers, deliveries, or commercial vehicles should communicate the restriction rather than asking someone to find an improvised shortcut. The safe alternative may require a separate arrangement for that vehicle or destination. Only the road authority or an authorized site controller can confirm it.
When signs seem to conflict
Detour arrow versus access sign
Follow the detour arrow. The access sign identifies the works entrance; it does not cancel the detour. Only a clear instruction in the traffic-control arrangement or from an authorized controller should redirect public traffic.
Open-looking lane versus closure barrier
Treat the barrier and closure instruction as decisive. Work areas often contain lanes that look complete but are not open, or that are reserved for site vehicles moving in the opposite direction.
Permanent sign versus temporary control
Temporary signs, signals, and controller instructions govern the temporary arrangement. A permanent “through road” or turn sign may no longer describe the route while work is underway.

Two temporary messages at the same junction
Read both messages and identify which one applies to your movement. A detour panel may direct through traffic while an access panel directs site traffic. If the distinction is not clear, the safest response is to wait outside the controlled area and seek an explicit instruction. Do not infer permission from another driver’s movement, a delivery vehicle’s presence, or an open gate.

- Reduce speed before the first cones or narrowed lane, not after entering the work area.
- Expect workers, equipment, abrupt lane shifts, temporary signals, and vehicles entering or leaving the site.
- Leave additional following distance so you can stop for a controller or a sudden queue.
- Stay in the marked lane and do not cross a solid temporary line or channelizing device to reach a shortcut.
- Keep your attention on signs and traffic movements rather than trying to operate a navigation device while moving.
- Follow temporary speed limits even when the road appears empty; the limit reflects the work-zone arrangement, not just congestion.
- Do not stop at the mouth of a works entrance to decide what the sign means. Move to a safe legal place where you will not obstruct the detour or site traffic.
Jurisdiction matters
The title does not identify a country, state, province, road, or project. Sign appearance, legal duties, and exceptions therefore cannot be generalized from one place to another. The following official material illustrates the differences without replacing the rules at your location.
Ontario
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation’s official driver handbook explains temporary-condition signs and instructs drivers to follow detour markers until they return to the regular route. It also tells drivers entering a construction zone to use extra caution and be prepared for a lower speed limit.
United Kingdom
The Department for Transport’s Signs for road works and temporary situations guidance applies to England, Scotland, and Wales. Its “Temporary access to a construction or road works site” sign identifies works access; it should not be read as a general public-detour instruction without the accompanying traffic controls.
United States
Federal Highway Administration Interpretation Letter 6(09)-42 (I), concerning signing for rerouting due to traffic incidents, defines the temporary purpose of detour signs. State and local agencies may add requirements, restrictions, or different sign layouts, so the signs at the site remain controlling.
Australia
Austroads’ 2021 guide addresses temporary traffic management at static worksites and the capacity and traffic types a detour should accommodate. It is guidance for designing the route, not a driver authorization to leave the signed path.
Practical examples
The access road is the only visible paved route
You reach a closure and see a sign for temporary access to the construction site. No sign says that ordinary traffic may enter. Remain at the closure, locate the detour marker, and follow it. The paved surface and apparent availability do not change the access road’s stated purpose.

An authorized controller gives a clear instruction that public traffic should use the entrance, and the movement is compatible with the signals and barriers. Follow that direction slowly, watching for workers and site vehicles. The controller’s instruction is the factor that changes the route, not the access sign by itself.

The detour leads to a restriction for your vehicle
A signed detour reaches a height, weight, width, or vehicle-class restriction that applies to your vehicle. Do not divert into the works area. Stop at a safe location and obtain an approved route from the road authority or controller; the appropriate detour may require a separate arrangement for that vehicle class.
The detour appears to end, but work continues
When a sign says the detour ends or returns you to the regular route, check the roadway and continue reading signs. A new temporary control can begin at the next junction, and the end of one detour does not authorize entry into a separately closed lane.
What not to do
- Do not move cones, gates, or barriers.
- Do not assume a navigation app’s route overrides temporary signs.
- Do not follow a work vehicle through a restricted entrance unless you are expressly authorized.
- Do not turn around inside the work zone or stop where you obstruct traffic.
- Do not treat a familiar permanent route as open when temporary controls close it.
- Do not make a speed or travel-time comparison the deciding factor; authorization and safe traffic control come first.
- Do not rely on another driver’s decision as proof that a route is open to you.
Before you continue after the detour
Once a sign shows that the detour ends or that you have regained the regular route, check that you are actually on the normal roadway and that no further temporary restriction applies. Temporary works can continue beyond the original closure, and a new set of signs may begin at the next junction. Continue reading the signs until the temporary control clearly ends.
For a real route, consult the current closure notice from the relevant road authority before setting out. A general explanation cannot provide live status for a particular project, and conditions can change after a sign plan is installed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a temporary construction access road if it looks open?
Not unless the signs or an authorized traffic controller clearly direct ordinary public traffic onto it. An access sign identifies the works entrance and does not, by itself, grant public permission.
What should I do if a detour sign and a permanent road sign disagree?
Follow the temporary detour, signal, barrier, or controller instruction. Permanent signs may not describe the route while work is underway.
Does a posted detour fit every vehicle?
No. Check vehicle-class, height, width, weight, length, hazardous-load, and local-access restrictions. If your vehicle is restricted, obtain an approved route from the road authority or controller.
When can I leave the detour?
Continue following markers until a sign indicates that the detour ends or that you have returned to the regular route. Do not leave early for an unsigned shortcut.
What if the next detour marker is missing?
Do not enter a closed lane or work area by guesswork. Stop only where legal and safe, then ask a controller or contact the responsible road authority.
Can a navigation app override the temporary signs?
No. App directions are supplementary. Barriers, closure signs, temporary signals, and authorized controllers govern the live work-zone arrangement.
The Bottom Line
Use the posted detour unless clear temporary controls or an authorized traffic controller direct public traffic onto the access road. Obey barriers, signals, speed limits, and vehicle restrictions; never improvise through a closed work area. When the route is unclear, stop safely and ask the responsible road authority.
