Neither a storage tank nor a tankless water heater is automatically the better choice. A tank heater stores a ready supply and can deliver high short-term flow, while a tankless unit heats water only as it moves through a heat exchanger. Tankless equipment can reduce standby heat loss and save space, but it costs more to adapt some homes and must be sized for the required flow and temperature rise. The right decision depends on your fuel and utility rates, simultaneous hot-water demand, venting and gas-line conditions, available installation space, local code, warranty support, and the complete written installation estimate—not the equipment price alone.

How storage and tankless heaters work

Storage tank water heaters

A conventional storage heater keeps a reservoir of water hot inside an insulated tank. When someone opens a hot-water tap, heated water leaves the tank and cold water enters to be reheated. The stored volume and the burner or heating elements determine how long the supply lasts. A tank can continue serving several fixtures at once until its usable hot water is depleted, after which recovery speed becomes the limiting factor.

Because the tank is maintained at temperature even when no tap is open, some heat escapes through the insulation. That ongoing loss is commonly called standby heat loss. Better insulation and controls reduce it, but do not eliminate it.

Tankless, or instantaneous, water heaters

A tankless unit has no hot-water reservoir. A flow sensor detects a demand, then a gas burner or electric heating elements transfer heat through a heat exchanger as water passes through. ENERGY STAR describes the benefit this way: “By heating water only when needed, instead of maintaining a tank full of hot water at all times, tankless water heaters can achieve greater efficiency than standard tank-type water heaters.”

The unit can keep supplying water while a fixture is open, but only within its rated flow and temperature-rise capability. It cannot produce unlimited hot water at any flow rate. If several showers, a dishwasher, and a washing machine call for hot water simultaneously, the required gallons per minute (GPM) may exceed the heater’s capacity or force a lower outlet temperature.

Tank vs. tankless: the practical differences

Factor Storage tank Tankless
Heating method Maintains a reservoir at temperature Heats water as it flows through a heat exchanger
Standby heat loss Present because stored water is kept hot Avoided when no hot water is flowing
Hot-water delivery Limited by stored volume and recovery rate; compare first-hour rating Limited by maximum flow at the required temperature rise
Continuous use Supply can run out during heavy demand Can run continuously while demand remains within rated capacity
Space Requires floor area and clearance for a tank Usually wall-mounted, but placement is constrained by venting, combustion air, electrical access, and service clearance
Installation scope Often a more direct replacement, though connections, venting, permits, and code still apply May require gas-line, vent, electrical, condensate, drain, and control changes
Efficiency comparison Use the model’s storage-heater UEF and draw-pattern rating Use the model’s instantaneous-heater UEF and rated flow
Service life ENERGY STAR contrasts conventional gas storage life with a general 20-year estimate for certified gas tankless units ENERGY STAR’s 20-year figure is a general estimate, not a warranty or guarantee for a particular model

These categories are not interchangeable performance tests. A tankless UEF threshold should not be compared directly with a storage-heater threshold as though both products were tested under identical conditions.

Efficiency, UEF, and actual energy bills

Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) is the standard starting point for comparing efficiency among products in the same fuel and product category. A higher UEF generally means more of the input energy becomes useful hot water under the test procedure. UEF is not a prediction of your household bill: your draw pattern, incoming-water temperature, thermostat setting, fuel price, climate, and installation all affect actual consumption.

ENERGY STAR’s criteria page, accessed in 2026, lists these requirements for certified gas-fired instantaneous heaters:

  • UEF of at least 0.95.
  • Maximum flow of at least 2.8 GPM over a 67°F temperature rise.

Certification requirements can change, so verify the current criteria for the model and product category you are considering. Gas-fired storage criteria vary with tank volume and draw pattern; use the appropriate storage test information rather than treating the instantaneous threshold as a universal benchmark.

What the published savings estimate means

ENERGY STAR estimates that a family of four using a certified gas tankless heater instead of a standard gas storage model can save $95 per year in gas bills, or $1,800 over its lifetime. ENERGY STAR does not state a year for this estimate on the referenced page. Treat both figures as program estimates under the stated comparison assumptions, not as a guaranteed household saving or a total-cost calculation. Local gas prices, water use, model efficiency, maintenance, and the cost of adapting your home can make your result substantially different.

Hot-water delivery: size for the peak, not the average

Storage heaters are evaluated partly by tank capacity and first-hour rating: how much usable hot water the unit can provide during an hour that begins with a full tank. Tankless heaters are selected by flow and temperature rise. The relevant question is how many fixtures may operate at once and how much the incoming water must be heated.

Calculate the design demand

  1. List simultaneous uses. Include showers, tubs, bathroom sinks, kitchen taps, a dishwasher, a washing machine, and any specialty fixture that may run at the same time. A household that staggers showers has a different peak than one where two showers run together before school.
  2. Estimate each fixture’s flow. Use the actual flow rating printed on showerheads, faucets, and appliances where available. ENERGY STAR provides illustrative flow figures for common uses and recommends an experienced plumber estimate the home’s needs.
  3. Add the likely concurrent flows. Do not size from the number of occupants alone. Two people can create a higher peak than four people if their schedules overlap, while a large family with staggered use may have a lower peak.
  4. Determine temperature rise. Subtract the incoming cold-water temperature from the desired outlet temperature. Winter groundwater is colder in many regions, so the same heater may deliver less flow at the same outlet setting during the coldest months.
  5. Match the manufacturer’s performance table. Check the model’s GPM at your calculated temperature rise, not just its headline maximum. Ask the installer to document the calculation and identify what happens if demand exceeds the rating.

For a storage unit, compare first-hour rating with your peak-hour demand and check recovery rate. For a tankless unit, compare maximum GPM at the required temperature rise. A model that appears adequate at a mild 45°F rise may not meet the same demand at a colder 67°F or higher rise.

Installation cost: what the equipment price leaves out

There is no reliable universal installed-price range or payback period for this comparison. ENERGY STAR recommends an in-home estimate and a written price. The scope can vary dramatically between a straightforward replacement and a conversion from a tank to a gas tankless system.

Common tankless cost drivers

  • Gas capacity: The existing gas line may not supply the input required by the new burner. A larger line, regulator adjustment, meter review, or other utility work may be necessary.
  • Venting: Tankless combustion and exhaust requirements differ by model. The installer must verify the vent route, pipe material, terminations, clearances, and combustion-air provisions.
  • Electrical supply: Forced-vent models may need a nearby electrical receptacle. A new circuit, outlet, or wiring correction can add scope.
  • Condensate management: Condensing models use a secondary heat exchanger and produce condensate that must drain safely. The required piping, neutralization, pump, or drain connection depends on the site and the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Water and gas connections: Relocation, shutoff valves, isolation valves, filtration, expansion-control equipment, or pipe-size changes may be required by the model or local code.
  • Removal and disposal: Include draining, disconnecting, removing, and disposing of the old tank, plus patching or access work if its location changes.
  • Permits and inspections: Permit fees and inspection requirements vary by jurisdiction and should appear in the estimate.
  • Labor and access: Attic, crawl-space, exterior-wall, masonry, or long-pipe-run conditions can change labor time and materials.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s December 2024 rulemaking analysis discusses modeled components such as vent pipe and fittings, combustion-air intake, and condensate management. Those components help explain why quotes differ; they are not a retail quote for your home.

How to request comparable estimates

  1. Give each contractor the same information: fuel type, existing heater, household schedule, fixture list, incoming-water conditions if known, and the proposed location.
  2. Require the quote to name the exact manufacturer model, fuel, input, UEF, rated flow at a stated temperature rise, and whether it is condensing.
  3. Ask for separate line items for equipment, removal, gas work, venting, electrical work, condensate drainage, water-piping changes, permits, labor, startup, and warranty registration.
  4. Ask whether the quote includes code upgrades, access repairs, disposal, and return visits for inspection.
  5. Confirm who will service the unit, what qualifications are held, response times, and which labor and parts are covered by the warranty.
  6. Check contractor references and obtain at least two written estimates before authorizing work.

Condensing and non-condensing tankless models

A condensing gas tankless heater captures additional heat from exhaust with a secondary heat exchanger. Because the exhaust is cooler, these models can often use approved PVC venting, but they create condensate that needs a properly designed drain system. A non-condensing model generally sends hotter exhaust through a venting system rated for that temperature and may have different clearance and termination rules.

Do not choose between these designs from a generic diagram. The installer must follow the exact model manual and local residential code for vent length, materials, slope, termination, combustion air, drainage, and clearances. A lower equipment price can disappear if the existing vent path or drain location is incompatible.

Space, placement, and household fit

A wall-mounted tankless unit can free floor space, but it is not location-neutral. The unit needs access for maintenance, a suitable vent route, combustion air where required, water and gas connections, electrical power for some controls or fans, and condensate disposal when applicable. Exterior installation may be restricted by climate, freeze protection, and local code.

A storage tank may fit an existing utility-room layout with minimal changes. It also provides a buffer for short, high-flow events, which can matter in homes with simultaneous showers or fixtures whose flow cannot be reduced. Conversely, a small tankless unit may work well in a home with modest, spread-out demand but disappoint if several high-flow fixtures overlap.

Warranty, service, and longevity

Compare the actual model’s heat-exchanger, parts, and labor coverage rather than relying on a category-level promise. ENERGY STAR gives a general 20-year life expectancy for certified gas tankless heaters, but that is not a guaranteed service life and does not replace the manufacturer’s warranty terms. Ask who performs warranty work locally and whether specialized controls or heat-exchanger parts are readily available.

For either design, keep the installation manual, model and serial numbers, permits, commissioning records, and service invoices. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions and have a qualified professional investigate unusual noise, ignition faults, leaking connections, repeated temperature swings, or error codes.

When a tank is usually the better fit

  • The existing gas, water, electrical, and vent connections can be reused with little modification.
  • Several fixtures may run at once and the household values a large stored buffer.
  • The installation budget is constrained and a tankless conversion would require major gas or vent work.
  • Service providers familiar with tankless equipment are difficult to find locally.
  • The home has adequate floor space and the owner prefers simpler replacement planning.

When tankless may be worth the added work

  • Reducing standby heat loss and reclaiming floor space are important priorities.
  • Hot-water demand is continuous or spread through the day, and the selected model meets the measured peak flow.
  • The home already has, or can reasonably add, the required gas capacity, vent route, electrical access, and condensate drain.
  • The owner expects to remain long enough for potential operating savings to matter and accepts that no universal payback can be promised.
  • A qualified installer and dependable local service are available.

A decision checklist before you sign

  • Have you identified the fuel and compared local gas or electricity rates?
  • Do you have a written peak-demand and temperature-rise calculation?
  • Does the proposed model’s UEF and rated flow match the correct product category?
  • Has the installer confirmed gas-line capacity, venting, combustion air, electrical access, and condensate handling?
  • Are removal, disposal, permits, inspections, code upgrades, and startup included in writing?
  • Have you compared first-hour rating for a tank option with rated GPM at your required temperature rise for a tankless option?
  • Have you checked current local rebates and verified eligibility rather than assuming an incentive exists?
  • Do warranty terms and local service support fit the equipment you are buying?
  • Does the quote identify the exact model and all installation materials?

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by household size alone

Occupant count is only a rough indicator. Two simultaneous showers and an appliance load can exceed a heater sized for average daily use. Base the decision on peak concurrent flow and temperature rise.

Comparing only the equipment prices

A tankless unit may require gas, vent, electrical, drain, and permit work that a replacement tank does not. Compare complete, itemized installed estimates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the maximum GPM without its temperature rise

A headline flow number is incomplete. Require the performance at the incoming-water and outlet temperatures your home actually experiences.

Assuming a rebate or payback

Eligibility changes by utility, location, fuel, model, and date. Verify current programs, and calculate payback only after you have a local installed cost and a realistic energy-use estimate.

Treating a tankless replacement as DIY plumbing

Gas connections, combustion venting, condensate, electrical work, permits, and code compliance make this a professional installation in most homes. Use the manufacturer’s manual and local code as the controlling requirements.

Bottom-line decision

Choose a storage tank when predictable high-flow buffering, simpler installation, or lower upfront scope matters most. Choose tankless when the home can support the required gas, venting, electrical, and drainage work and the model is sized for the real peak demand. Compare the exact model’s UEF, delivery rating, warranty, service support, and complete written installation cost. ENERGY STAR’s estimated $95 annual and $1,800 lifetime gas-bill savings for a family of four can inform the discussion, but only your household’s usage and local quote can determine whether the change is financially worthwhile.
