Both presentations use modular steel frames woven with salvaged billboard fabric to make places for shade, sitting and gathering. The project’s central idea is the engawa: a threshold between building and landscape, and between private and shared life.
What is Limbo Engawa?
Designed by TAELON7 and co-commissioned by Limbo Museum and Art Omi, Limbo Engawa is an architectural installation rather than a consumer product or a single finished pavilion. Its modular elements combine steel frames with strips cut from salvaged billboard fabric. Together they form shaded spaces and seating, including oversized daybed-like forms.
The project takes its name from the Japanese architectural concept of engawa, a transitional zone between interior and exterior. TAELON7 applies that idea to spaces that can connect a building with its surroundings and make room for both private retreat and communal use. The studio describes the work as “an open-ended spatial system—temporary, mobile, and responsive to use.”
How did it change between Accra and Art Omi?
| Presentation | Setting | Spatial role | Opening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limbo Museum, Accra, Ghana | An unfinished concrete museum structure and cultivated grounds used by farmers, caretakers and visitors. | A threshold intervention linking the skeletal building with the land around it, with human-scaled places to sit and rest. | March 12, 2026 |
| Art Omi Sculpture & Architecture Park, Ghent, New York | A Hudson Valley landscape described in reporting as fields, wetlands and woods. | A reconfigured, freestanding landscape pavilion. | September 19, 2026 |
The Accra arrangement responded to an unfinished institutional building alongside cultivated grounds. At Art Omi, TAELON7 adapted the same modular system to an open landscape. The two presentations share materials and a spatial approach, but available descriptions do not establish that they are identical or that the structure traveled as one intact piece.

How is the installation constructed?
Lightweight steel profiles are assembled into modular frames, then woven with strips of salvaged billboard fabric. The components combine into larger shade and seating structures. TAELON7 says individual modules can be carried by one person and assembled on site; that is a project-specific design description, not a specification for a retail kit or a general construction system.
The use of salvaged advertising fabric gives the installation a material history beyond its structural role, while the modular approach lets the arrangement respond to the site. In Accra, the frames helped make a transition between building and grounds; in New York, they were configured as a freestanding pavilion within the park landscape.
