It is a new smart-heating platform built around Matter over Thread, with UK-specific support for heating and stored hot water. The important catch is that tado° X cannot be mixed with tado° V3+ or earlier tado° products.
For a new installation, tado° X can provide room-by-room control, schedules, remote management and wider smart-home integration. For an existing V3+ owner, however, upgrading is a platform replacement rather than a simple add-on.
What is tado° X?
tado° X is a family of smart-heating devices rather than one product. The range includes:
| Device | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Wired Smart Thermostat X | Replaces a wired thermostat and controls compatible boilers. |
| Wireless Smart Thermostat X | Provides wireless room control, usually alongside a Wireless Receiver X. |
| Wireless Temperature Sensor X | Measures temperature in a room where a separate sensor is more suitable than the thermostat or radiator valve. |
| Smart Radiator Thermostat X | Controls individual radiators for room-by-room heating. |
| Bridge X | Acts as a Thread border router and connects the X system to the home network. |
| Wireless Receiver X | Controls the boiler and, in the UK configuration, can also control stored hot water. |
| Heat Pump Optimizer X | Controls selected compatible heat-pump systems. |
The thermostat and temperature sensor measure room conditions, while radiator thermostats regulate individual rooms. A central heating-control device is still needed: radiator valves alone cannot normally request heat from the boiler.

What changed with tado° X?
Thread creates a device network
Thread is a low-power wireless mesh network. Compatible devices can communicate through one another, and multiple Thread border routers can help extend coverage around a home. That may be useful in larger properties or homes where a single central bridge would struggle, although results depend on device placement, walls, floors and the wider network.
Matter improves interoperability
Matter is a smart-home standard designed to let compatible products work across ecosystems. A tado° X device may therefore be controllable through tado°, Apple Home, Google Home and other compatible Matter platforms.
Matter does not guarantee that every tado° feature appears everywhere. Heating insights, specialist automations, fault guidance and some subscription features may remain dependent on the tado° app or its cloud services.
Do you need Bridge X?
Most installations need a Thread border router. This may be:
- Bridge X;
- Wireless Receiver X;
- Heat Pump Optimizer X; or
- a compatible third-party hub, such as Google Nest Wifi Pro or a supported Apple Home hub.
The UK wireless thermostat kit includes a Wireless Receiver X with the required network function. Wired thermostat and radiator-thermostat starter kits may include Bridge X, but product bundles can change, so check the live listing before ordering. A wired starter-kit listing may not include Bridge X if a compatible border router is expected to be supplied separately.
Third-party setups need careful checking. tado° says the compatible hub must support NAT64 for the devices to appear both in the third-party platform and in the tado° app. Not every Apple TV includes Thread support. Requirements are listed in tado°’s Bridge X and border-router guidance.

Which tado° X kit does a UK home need?
Wired thermostat already installed
Choose the Wired Smart Thermostat X Starter Kit when the existing thermostat wiring and boiler arrangement are supported. Do not rely only on the boiler brand: check the thermostat, programmer and wiring arrangement as well.
Recommended Free Tools
Wireless control or stored hot water
The UK Wireless Smart Thermostat X kit is designed for wireless installations and includes a UK-specific programmer/receiver configuration. This matters in homes with a system boiler and hot-water cylinder, where the receiver needs to control heating and cylinder heating.
Do not assume that the standard European wireless kit is interchangeable with the UK version. The UK model has the relevant programmer and hot-water control. The Wireless Receiver X can provide a physical 60-minute boost for heating and, where supported, hot water.
Combi boiler
A combi boiler normally produces domestic hot water on demand, so it does not usually need scheduled cylinder heating. The correct tado° X kit still depends on the boiler’s control method and existing thermostat or programmer.
Room-by-room radiator control
Smart Radiator Thermostat X valves can control individual rooms, but they need a compatible central heating setup. Equipping every radiator can become substantially more expensive than installing one smart thermostat, so calculate the cost of valves, a central controller, any bridge and professional installation.
Heat pump
Heat Pump Optimizer X is intended for selected compatible systems, not every heat pump. Confirm the exact manufacturer and model through the official compatibility checker.
Compatibility: check these details before buying
- Find the boiler manufacturer and exact model.
- Identify the existing thermostat and programmer models.
- Confirm whether the property has a hot-water cylinder.
- Check whether the system uses relay/on-off control, OpenTherm or another modulating protocol.
- Note whether the home uses underfloor heating, an S-plan or Y-plan arrangement, or an unusual wiring centre.
- Check whether you already own a compatible Thread border router.
- Run the complete installation through tado°’s compatibility checker.
tado° X supports simple relay control, supported OpenTherm configurations, many conventional boilers and selected heat pumps. However, tado° says X supports a smaller range of modulating boilers than V3+. A V3+ installation using a non-OpenTherm modulating protocol may therefore be incompatible with X even if the older system worked correctly.

- The Nest Thermostat is designed to work without a C wire in most homes, but for some systems, including heating only, cooling only, zone controlled, and heat pump systems, you’ll need a C wire or other compatible power accessory
- Nest Thermostat turns itself down when you leave, so you don’t waste energy heating or cooling an empty home. Lock feature: No
- Programmable thermostat that lets you create an energy efficient schedule in the Google Home app on your Android or iPhone
- Remote control lets family members change the thermostat temperature from anywhere on a phone, laptop, or tablet[1]
Boiler controls and wiring-centre work can involve mains electricity and heating-system wiring. Use a qualified heating professional where required; the compatibility checker is not a substitute for safe installation.
The biggest warning for existing tado° owners
tado° X is not backwards-compatible with tado° V3+ or earlier tado° systems. You cannot add one X radiator valve to a V3+ home, and X and V3+ devices cannot communicate with one another.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A V3+ owner changing to X must create a new tado° X home. tado° says schedules, rooms and other settings cannot currently be transferred automatically, so settings may need to be recreated manually. Compatibility with an existing V3+ installation does not guarantee compatibility with X.
If an existing V3+ system works well and does not need Matter, Thread or new hardware, staying with it may be the lower-cost decision. tado° X makes more sense for a new installation or a complete replacement where the compatibility check has passed.
What happens during an internet outage?
tado° says room-control devices store schedules locally, allowing programmed heating to continue when the system is disconnected from the internet. The Wireless Receiver X also has physical boost controls for heating and, where applicable, hot water.
This is not the same as full offline functionality. Remote app changes, cloud insights and some automations may be unavailable until connectivity returns. See tado°’s offline receiver guidance.

Basic heating control and smart scheduling should not be assumed to be universally subscription-locked. Availability can depend on the current plan, product and installation date. tado° says some legacy customers with installations before October 2025 may receive certain features without AI Assist. Check the current UK price and feature list in the app or on the official site before committing.
tado° has also published average energy-saving claims, but figures such as 19% or 22% are not guarantees for an individual home. Results depend on insulation, occupancy, weather, boiler efficiency, existing controls and how schedules are configured.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.tado° X compared with the alternatives
The best alternative depends mainly on the household’s existing ecosystem and heating requirements:
- Google Nest: worth considering for a home already centred on Google Home.
- Hive: relevant to UK households that prefer a familiar domestic smart-heating ecosystem, subject to current support and compatibility.
- Drayton Wiser: worth investigating where multi-zone or radiator-level control is the priority.
- tado° V3+: potentially sensible for an existing V3+ owner who wants to expand without replacing the installation, subject to current availability and support.
These alternatives require separate checks for current pricing, product support and boiler compatibility. They should not be selected solely on headline price.
Who should buy tado° X?
Choose tado° X when you are starting from scratch, want room-by-room control, value Matter and Thread integration, have a compatible relay or OpenTherm boiler, or are installing a supported heat pump.
Best Value

Be cautious when you already own several V3+ devices, use a non-OpenTherM modulating boiler, have unusual wiring, need stored-hot-water control, lack a Thread border router, or do not want cloud services or optional subscription features.
The strongest case for X is a properly checked new installation that combines central heating control with radiator valves and an appropriate Thread border router. The weakest case is buying a single X device as an assumed companion to an existing V3+ system.
Frequently Asked Questions
When did tado° X launch in the UK?
tado° announced the UK launch on 4 September 2024, with availability planned for the beginning of November 2024. It should now be treated as an established UK product platform rather than an upcoming launch.
Can tado° X work with tado° V3+?
No. tado° X cannot be added to a V3+ or earlier tado° home, and the two generations cannot communicate. Switching requires a new X home and manual recreation of settings.
Does tado° X need Wi-Fi?
The system needs a network connection for app access and cloud features, but tado° says room-control devices store schedules locally so programmed heating can continue during an internet outage.
Can tado° X control hot water?
The UK Wireless Receiver X can control heating and stored hot water in supported system-boiler installations, including a physical 60-minute boost. Combi boilers generally produce hot water on demand instead.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: tado° X is a capable UK smart-heating platform, especially for new installations requiring room-by-room control and Matter/Thread integration. Check the exact boiler, programmer, wiring and hot-water arrangement first. If you already own tado° V3+, do not treat X as an incremental upgrade: moving over means replacing the platform and recreating your settings.
