The new Sydney Fish Market in Blackwattle Bay officially opened on January 19, 2026. Its defining feature is a 200-metre (656-foot) wave-shaped roof made with 594 glued laminated timber beams, supported by a steel structure and topped with more than 400 roof panels. The design incorporates solar panels, rainwater collection and skylights, though published sources do not quantify the building’s energy, carbon or water savings.
What is the new Sydney Fish Market’s roof made of?
The roof combines timber beams and steel. The beams are glued laminated timber, commonly called glulam: layers of wood bonded to form structural members. The roof is 200 metres long, equivalent to about 656 feet, and includes 594 glulam beams. The longest beams reach 32 metres (104 feet). Multiplex, the project builder, reported that the roof weighs 2,500 tonnes and has more than 400 panels. Multiplex’s February 2025 construction update says the roof structure was completed in December 2024. New Atlas’s February 2025 architecture report also documents its dimensions and beam count.
How does the roof relate to sustainability?
The project’s published descriptions identify several systems intended to support environmental performance: integrated solar panels, rainwater collection for irrigation and skylights that bring indirect daylight to upper levels. These are documented design features, not proof of measured savings. The sources cited here do not report quantified energy use, carbon reductions or water savings.
The roof’s wave-like form is a prominent architectural feature, but appearance alone does not establish environmental performance. In a February 2025 update, NSW Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said the roof enhances the market’s aesthetic and “the environmental sustainability of the building.” The available project reporting describes the systems behind that aim without publishing performance results.
