American University’s Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance received a Sustainability Award of Merit in ENR’s 2026 Best Projects coverage. The Washington, D.C., athletics and wellness facility pairs rooftop solar with ground-source heating and cooling, water-conservation measures and stormwater features. Its LEED Platinum certification is achieved; its net-zero energy performance and anticipated ILFI certification should be understood as goals, not verified operating results.

What the award recognizes

ENR’s October 6, 2026 feature identifies the Meltzer Center as a Sustainability Award of Merit project in its 2026 East Best Projects coverage. DAVIS Construction submitted the project, American University is the owner, and Perkins Eastman is the lead design firm. ENR MidAtlantic’s August 7 announcement also lists it among the regional Sustainability Award of Merit recipients. ENR’s project feature and regional announcement provide the award details.

The regional announcement scheduled recognition of the winners and Award of Merit projects for October 30, 2026, in Baltimore. That is the announced event date; it is not confirmation that the event took place.

Athletics and wellness facility on campus

The Alan and Amy Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance is paired with the Sports Center Annex. American University says the facility is 89,077 square feet and opened in January 2026; DAVIS describes the project as 92,000 square feet. The sources do not reconcile those reported areas, so they should not be treated as identical measurements. See American University’s project page and DAVIS Construction’s project page.

University-described spaces include a competition and practice court, wrestling training center, sports medicine and strength and conditioning areas, meeting spaces, and wellness programming.

How the building addresses energy

Solar generation

American University reports 1,334 photovoltaic panels across the Meltzer Center roof and adjacent Bender Arena, with an annual production figure of 779,631 kWh. The university says the system is designed to generate more electricity annually than the building consumes. ENR describes the array as nearly 780,000 kWh. These are design and project-reported figures, not independently verified full-year operating data.

Ground-source heating and cooling

The university reports 85 geothermal wells, each 500 feet deep. Its description says the system uses below-ground temperatures with a heat pump and heat-recovery unit for heating and cooling. Together with onsite solar, this infrastructure supports the project’s net-zero energy design ambition.

Certification and the net-zero distinction

American University identifies the Meltzer Center and Sports Center Annex as LEED v4 BD+C Platinum certified, the highest LEED level according to the university. Separately, the university describes net-zero as a design goal and says ILFI Zero Energy certification was anticipated. DAVIS also calls the center the university’s first net-zero building.

Those statements do not establish that the facility has completed a full year of independently verified net-zero operation or earned the anticipated ILFI certification. The distinction matters: a design target and a certification expectation are not the same as measured energy performance over time.

Water, landscape and stormwater measures

American University reports a 37% reduction in indoor water use compared with a building using traditional fixtures, and a 94% reduction in outdoor water use attributed to drought-tolerant plants. The project description also names low-flow bathroom fixtures, green roofs, bioretention basins, and reflective pavement and roofing.

The university reports 18,822 square feet of green roof. ENR describes more than 18,800 square feet and says the stormwater features were designed to capture and absorb all rainfall. That is a description of the design, not a separately reported measured outcome.

Materials, construction and light pollution

American University reports that 89.8% of construction waste was diverted from landfill; ENR describes diversion as exceeding 75%. The sources do not explain the difference, so each figure should remain attributed to its source. The university also reports selecting recycled-content products and suppliers that provide environmental product declarations.

ENR notes that lighting fixtures with low backlight, uplight and glare ratings were selected to limit light pollution and protect migratory birds. These are reported design choices; the available project descriptions do not quantify their realized environmental effects.

Why the project’s approach is notable

The award case brings together several building strategies rather than relying on a single headline feature: onsite renewable generation, ground-source mechanical systems, water reduction, vegetated and reflective surfaces, stormwater management, material selection and construction-waste diversion. The most important qualification is also the clearest: the university reports an achieved LEED Platinum certification, while net-zero remains a design objective whose full-year operational verification is not established by the cited project descriptions.
