Nine subtly curved, interlocking towers contain distinct galleries and performance spaces; the open areas between them connect those rooms, carry activity through the building, and frame the city. The design also brings a historic music venue, the King Edward Hotel, into a larger cultural complex.
What is Studio Bell?
Studio Bell is the National Music Centre’s home in Calgary, Alberta. Designed by Allied Works Architecture with Brad Cloepfil as architect, it opened in 2016. Its program combines collection and exhibition galleries with performance, recording, broadcast, education, and live-music spaces.
The institution describes the building as 160,000 square feet, while Allied Works lists 163,000 square feet in its project data. The sources do not explain the difference, so neither figure should be treated as a definitive reconciliation. Allied Works also lists a 300-seat performance space.
How do the towers shape the experience?
The building’s defining composition is nine interlocking towers clad in glazed terra cotta. Allied Works describes the towers as acoustically distinct volumes, or “stages,” while Studio Bell’s visitor information emphasizes the open spaces that carry music and activity through five floors. Together, these descriptions suggest a contrast between focused rooms for exhibitions or performances and shared circulation spaces that reconnect visitors with other activities and views of Calgary.

The circulation is part of the institution’s program, not merely a way to get from one room to another. Visitors move between distinct spaces for collections, performances, and learning, then return to open areas where the building’s wider activity becomes perceptible. The architect’s concept makes that sequence legible without requiring every space to serve the same acoustic or public purpose.
How does the architecture use sound as an idea?
Brad Cloepfil’s statement, reproduced in Studio Bell’s 2024 architecture brochure, calls the building “a gathering of resonant vessels” and describes it as “a silent and powerful instrument that exists to emanate music and light.” He connects the towers’ curved walls to light, gravity, and acoustics. The brochure also attributes to the architect a description of voices and music drawing visitors upward through the five floors.

These are architectural intentions and explanatory language, not evidence that the structure literally functions as a musical instrument. The available project information does not report measured reverberation times, decibel levels, or acoustic test results. Stantec, the building-services consultant, says it fine-tuned mechanical systems to minimize interference with programming—a practical complement to the architectural concept, since equipment noise can compete with performances and other sound-sensitive uses.
What is the terra-cotta exterior meant to convey?
Studio Bell’s 2024 architecture brochure reports 220,000 custom glazed terra-cotta tiles. The institution says the material and tower forms reference resonant vessels as well as views of the Bow River and surrounding cityscape. The curved, interlocking surfaces make the building read as a unified composition while retaining the distinct outlines of its component volumes.

The tile count is the institution’s published figure, not an independently verified count. Allied Works’ project description and Studio Bell’s brochure both connect the exterior’s form to the building’s musical and civic setting.
How does the King Edward Hotel fit into the project?
The complex incorporates the historic King Edward Hotel, known locally as the King Eddy, a Calgary venue with a blues history. Allied Works describes the hotel’s restoration as part of the broader project, while its account of the design frames the new presentation spaces as a connection to the club and recording studios. The hotel is part of the larger cultural story, not one of the nine new towers.

The result is more than a new façade around a music organization; it links a working cultural institution to a historic venue in the East Village.

Why published floor-area figures differ
For readers comparing project descriptions, the reported areas are not identical. Studio Bell and Tourism Calgary use 160,000 square feet; Allied Works gives 163,000 square feet in its project data. The sources do not state why the figures differ. Studio Bell’s five-floor description and Tourism Calgary’s account of 22 exhibition spaces describe public-facing spaces rather than resolving the area discrepancy.
