A stripped screw usually has a damaged drive recess—the slot or shaped opening in its head—so a driver can no longer grip it reliably. Stop turning as soon as the driver slips. Then choose a removal method based on whether the head protrudes, how much of the recess still engages, and how much risk of damage the surrounding material can tolerate.
What is a stripped screw?
In most cases, “stripped” means the screw head’s drive recess has been rounded or worn, rather than that the screw’s threads are damaged. These are separate problems: a damaged head makes it hard to turn the screw, while damaged threads affect how it holds in the material.
When a stuck screw resists turning, torque can push the driver out of the recess. That slipping wears down the edges, making it easier for the driver to slip again. A poorly matched driver, excessive force, and repeated attempts can all contribute. iFixit explains how slipping can wear the recess; The Home Depot and This Old House also emphasize driver fit and avoiding force when a driver does not engage.
How do I remove a stripped screw?
There is no guaranteed method for every screw. Start with the least invasive option that fits the screw’s condition, and move to drilling or cutting only if the simpler approaches do not work and the workpiece can tolerate the risk.

- Stop and inspect. Note whether the head is protruding, flush, or recessed, and whether any part of the drive recess still gives a driver purchase. Do not keep turning a driver that slips.
- Try a correctly fitting manual driver. If part of the recess remains, try a different size or type of screwdriver that fits it. Use controlled pressure and stop if it will not engage. Both The Home Depot and This Old House describe a well-matched manual driver as an early option.
- Grip a head that protrudes. If enough of the head is above the surface, self-locking pliers may grip it so you can turn the screw out. This approach does not apply to a flush or recessed head.
- Use a screw extractor according to its instructions. Extractor designs differ. For its own extractor, BLACK+DECKER’s instructions say to drill a pilot hole using the size stamped on the extractor or listed in its table, insert the extractor, and turn it left with an open-end or adjustable wrench. Those pilot-hole sizes are specific to that manufacturer’s extractor numbers; do not transfer them to another kit. Some kits are designed for use with a drill, while other styles are turned by hand. Follow the directions for the tool you have. BLACK+DECKER describes the expected result as: “The screw or bolt will ease out.” That is the procedure’s expected action, not a guarantee for every fastener.
- Consider a left-handed bit or a newly cut slot if the workpiece allows. A left-handed bit used in reverse or a screw extractor may be appropriate depending on the screw and access. A rotary tool can cut a new slot for a flathead driver, but cutting can damage nearby material. Treat it as an option only when there is room to work and that risk is acceptable.
Drilling and cutting can damage the surrounding surface or screw hole. The cited instructions do not establish a universal safe drill speed or a success rate for any method. Follow the current tool instructions, protect the workpiece where practical, and stop if continuing could cause more damage than the repair allows.

How do I stop stripping screws?
- Match the driver tip to the screw’s drive type and size.
- Keep the driver engaged and apply controlled pressure as you turn.
- Stop if the driver slips; repeated slipping can wear the recess further.
- If a screw resists, check the fit rather than forcing the driver. Some assembly instructions recommend a hand driver instead of a drill.
