Stop Droopy Drawers: Diagnose and Fix a Sagging Drawer Bottom

A sagging drawer may have a slipped bottom panel—or a hardware problem. Inspect the drawer, then match the repair to what failed.

If a drawer sags, first find out whether its bottom panel has slipped or failed, or whether loose screws or worn slides are letting the drawer droop. Empty and remove the drawer, then inspect the panel, its grooves, the joints, fasteners, and slides. The right repair depends on what you find.

How to tell what is making the drawer droop

Many drawer bottoms are thin panels captured in grooves along the sides, front, and back. The panel can bow under the contents and eventually slip out of a groove, often at the rear. A drawer can also droop because its hardware or fasteners are loose or damaged.

  1. Empty the drawer and remove it from the cabinet.
  2. Check whether the bottom is intact, bowed, cracked, or out of its groove. Look along the panel’s edges to see how it is captured.
  3. Inspect the drawer joints and screws for looseness or damage.
  4. Check the slides for wear or damage. If the panel and its grooves are sound but the drawer still droops, focus on the hardware.

How to repair a bottom that has slipped out of its groove

If the panel is sound enough to reuse, re-seat it and reinforce it. Larry LeMasters, author of the This Old House guide updated May 11, 2026, writes: “The glue is the most critical component—it’s what holds everything solidly and tightly together.” This Old House’s repair guide describes the following approach.

  1. Apply carpenter’s glue in the groove at the back of the drawer, push the panel back into place, and wipe away excess glue. The guide says this repair can also be used if the bottom has slipped from a front or side groove.
  2. Cut a solid-wood or plywood support block 3/8 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and 4 inches long. Glue it underneath the bottom.
  3. Let the glue cure overnight.
  4. Turn the drawer upright and fit a 1 1/2-by-1 1/2-inch metal corner brace at the rear center. Screw it into the drawer back and down through the bottom into the support block.

Before driving screws, make sure the drawer has enough sound material to hold them and that they will not protrude through a visible face.

When to replace the bottom panel

If the panel is too warped or damaged to reuse, replace it with plywood cut to the same dimensions as the damaged panel. Check how the original panel is captured before cutting or fastening the replacement so it fits the drawer’s grooves and construction.

How to add support beneath a sound bottom

Support strips are another reinforcement option. WOOD Magazine describes them as a quick fix. Where a strip meets a bottom that sits in a groove in the drawer front, use brads short enough that they cannot pierce the visible front face. See WOOD Magazine’s droopy-drawer guidance.

When the slides or screws are the problem

Tighten loose screws before replacing hardware. If inspection shows that the sliders are worn or damaged, they may need replacement. Identify the failed hardware and its type and dimensions before choosing replacement slides; The Home Depot’s drawer-repair guide also covers this hardware repair path.
