These are manufacturer ratings reported by Popular Science, not independent test results. STIHL product manager Louis Danet reportedly advises clearing in smaller passes during a storm instead of trying to cut through a deep wall of snow. The difference matters if you are comparing the upfront purchase with the equipment needed to match the reported driveway ratings. The kit’s one included battery is not the same as the two-battery assumption behind those capacity figures.
Battery compatibility, capacity and runtime
The SFA 120 reportedly uses STIHL AP batteries. Its dual battery bays draw from one battery at a time and switch automatically to the second, according to Popular Science. The AP 300.0 P is listed by STIHL at 36 V rated voltage, 333 Wh and 4.2 lb, and is described as compatible with ALLPRO and AP tools.

STIHL’s battery specifications provide useful context, but they do not establish how long the SFA 120 runs while clearing snow. STIHL says the AP 300.0 P delivers 60% higher peak power and 20% longer runtime than the previous-generation AP 300.0 S, and up to 3,000 charge cycles. Those are manufacturer battery claims, not snow-thrower runtime measurements. STIHL also says the AP 300.0 P can reach 80% charge in 10 minutes using the AL 1602 MO fast charger; that is a battery-and-charger claim, not a guarantee of charging time in all conditions.

Maintenance: fewer engine tasks, but not maintenance-free
Because the SFA 120 is electric, it has no engine oil, spark plug or carburetor to service. Popular Science identifies three replaceable wear items: the rubber auger paddles, scraper bar and two polymer skid shoes. Inspecting these parts and replacing them as needed remains part of ownership; the available source does not establish model-specific service intervals or exact replacement part numbers.

STIHL says genuine repair parts and manuals are provided through authorized dealers, technicians and distributors, and recommends genuine parts. Ask a dealer for the correct manual and replacement components for the SFA 120 once available.

What is still unknown
Popular Science said the SFA 120 was awaiting a real-world review after snowfall. That means there is not yet a verified basis in the cited report for claims about actual clearing performance, measured noise, or runtime under particular snow conditions. The report also mentions an extremely cold ALLPRO battery at a product demonstration, but STIHL does not publish a minimum operating temperature for those packs. No specific cold-weather operating limit is established.
Model-specific warranty details, a complete official specification sheet, dealer availability and a published SFA 120 manual were not established in the available sources. Treat reported product details and launch plans as provisional until confirmed by STIHL or an authorized dealer.
Is it a fit for your property?
Before choosing this battery powered snow blower, consider your typical snowfall, driveway size, battery inventory and storage space. The quoted driveway capacities depend on snow depth and density and assume two AP 300.0 P packs. Also account for inspecting and eventually replacing the paddles, scraper bar and skid shoes. The available information supports a practical distinction: the SFA 120 removes several conventional engine-service tasks, but it does not eliminate routine care or establish performance for every driveway and storm.
