For a new-year plant with a hopeful meaning and realistic care needs, consider lucky bamboo, jade, or a money tree indoors. Their associations with prosperity and good fortune come from cultural traditions—not a promise that a plant will change your finances or fortune. For a seasonal display or garden, flowers and branches offer other ways to mark renewal, but outdoor choices must suit your local climate.
Choose a plant for its meaning and its growing conditions
Good-luck plant traditions vary by culture and household. The examples below draw on descriptions of Lunar or Chinese New Year traditions; they are not universal meanings. Before choosing, consider the message you want to convey, the light and watering you can provide, whether pets may reach the plant, and whether it will live indoors or outdoors.
- For a prosperity-themed indoor gift: lucky bamboo, jade, or a money tree.
- For seasonal color: a flowering plant such as kalanchoe, or flowers and branches used in a seasonal arrangement.
- For a garden planting: check the plant’s local hardiness and frost timing rather than assuming a holiday display plant will thrive outdoors.
Indoor plants associated with good fortune
Lucky bamboo: a symbolic centerpiece
The University of British Columbia Botanical Garden describes lucky bamboo as a Lunar New Year plant associated with good luck, prosperity, and positive energy. In that account, three stalks are believed to represent happiness, wealth, and longevity. These are traditional associations, not botanical effects. Despite its name and cultural association, lucky bamboo is Dracaena sanderiana, a tropical plant native to western Africa—not a true bamboo, as Clemson University Cooperative Extension explains.
How to care for lucky bamboo
- Light: Give it bright, indirect light indoors. Direct sun can damage the leaves and turn them brown.
- In water: Keep the roots and at least an inch of stem submerged, and change the water weekly. Pebbles are optional; use them to steady the stalks if needed.
- In soil: Use well-drained indoor or tropical potting soil. Water when the top inch is dry, and let excess water drain from the container.
- Pets and handling: Clemson Extension lists lucky bamboo as toxic to pets and notes that it may irritate human skin. Choose another plant or place it where pets cannot reach it.
Clemson Extension lists lucky bamboo as hardy outdoors in USDA zones 10–12. It advises moving the plant outside only to shade after frost danger has passed, then bringing it indoors before nighttime temperatures fall below 65°F. Those limits apply to lucky bamboo, not to the other plants in this article.

Jade: a succulent with coin-like leaves
The UBC Botanical Garden connects jade’s rounded, coin-like leaves with wealth and financial success. UC Cooperative Extension also describes jade as a succulent associated with prosperity, wealth, and fortune. It is a fitting symbolic choice if you prefer a succulent form, but the meaning remains a cultural association.
Common names can be confusing: “money plant” and “money tree” may refer to different plants. Check the botanical name when buying, rather than assuming a plant’s common name identifies it as jade or as a money tree.

Money tree: a foliage gift
The UBC Botanical Garden identifies the money tree as Pachira aquatica and describes it as associated with good luck, prosperity, and financial success in the Lunar New Year context it covers. Its account interprets the braided trunk as a symbol of unity and strength, and the five leaves on each stem as representing the five elements of traditional Chinese philosophy. These details describe a particular symbolic tradition; they should not be treated as universal interpretations.
Peace lily: for foliage and flowers
A peace lily is an option if you care more about foliage and flowers than traditional good-luck symbolism. Iowa State University Extension says peace lilies tolerate low light but flower best in indirect sunlight, and recommends keeping the soil moist. The extension’s care guidance does not assign the plant a specific good-fortune meaning.

Seasonal flowers, gifts, and garden choices
Flowers and branches for a seasonal display
UC Cooperative Extension’s February 2026 article on Chinese New Year plants lists tangerine or kumquat plants, pussy willow, orchids, jade, money plant, chrysanthemums, and peony, alongside lucky bamboo. The UBC Botanical Garden’s Lunar New Year guide also discusses anthuriums, chrysanthemums, forsythia, gladiolus, narcissus, orchids, pussy willow, jade, lucky bamboo, and money tree. Their meanings vary: the guides connect different plants with ideas such as love, longevity, spring, prosperity, and new beginnings.
A kumquat or pussy willow may suit a seasonal display, and pussy willow branches can be used in arrangements. If you want to plant something outside, first check whether it is suitable for your region and when it can safely be planted. The cited guides do not provide a region-by-region outdoor planting calendar for every listed plant.

Kalanchoe: a festive seasonal gift
Beijing’s municipal gardening guidance describes kalanchoe (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana) as a popular holiday-season flower and gift with winter and spring appeal. It recommends a bright, sunny location, less watering as growth slows in fall and winter, and protection from cold. This makes kalanchoe a seasonal choice, not a plant that belongs to every new-year tradition.
