Spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum) prefer bright light but adapt to medium light, and they suit hanging baskets because their leaves and plantlets arch and trail. Let the potting mix dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. A basket can be a good display choice, but the research available does not establish a safe anchor, load rating, or current price for a complete setup.
Light and Placement
Use medium light as a practical starting point. Illinois Extension describes spider plants as preferring bright light while adapting to medium light, and includes them among houseplants for which medium light is a minimum. A dim corner should not be treated as equivalent to suitable medium light.
Choose a location that provides appropriate light and lets you water the plant without runoff damaging the surface below. If you use a hanging basket, consider where drainage will go before watering.
Watering and Drainage
Let the potting mix dry between waterings rather than following a fixed weekly schedule. The right interval depends on conditions and the basket: hanging containers can lose moisture relatively quickly, and moss-lined baskets may dry faster than solid containers.

- Check the mix before watering rather than relying on a calendar.
- When the mix has dried between waterings, water thoroughly.
- Let excess water drain fully, and keep runoff from damaging floors, shelves, or other surfaces.
Illinois Extension advises filling a hanging basket and allowing water to drip from the bottom. Plan for that runoff: do not return a dripping basket to a location where drainage could damage a surface.
Choosing a Hanging Basket
Illinois Extension describes spider plants as ideal hanging-basket plants. Basket materials have different drainage and moisture-retention tradeoffs, so choose a container that suits the plant’s location and your watering routine.

These are general basket tradeoffs described by Illinois Extension, not requirements unique to spider plants. Check the mix as conditions change instead of assuming every basket dries at the same rate.

Hanging Safety: What to Check
A wet planter can be heavier than it looks because the soil holds water. The research available supports taking the fully watered setup into account, but it does not provide load ratings or installation instructions for drywall, plaster, masonry, ceiling joists, or particular hardware.

Before hanging a basket, identify the actual building surface and obtain installation guidance appropriate to that surface and the hardware. Do not treat general plant-care advice as structural guidance, and do not assume a particular hook or anchor is safe without a suitable rating and installation instructions.
Plantlets and Propagation
Spider plants produce small plantlets at the ends of long, arching stems. Illinois Extension notes that plantlets are produced when the plant is potbound. Their trailing form is one reason spider plants are commonly displayed in hanging containers.

Setup Costs: What the Research Can Establish
The university extension sources reviewed explain care and basket considerations but do not publish current prices for plants, baskets, hangers, or installation. They therefore do not support a reliable total setup budget or a price comparison.
To compare costs, first define the setup—for example, a plant alone, a plant with a basket, or a professionally mounted complete setup—and check dated prices for your region. Do not assume that a listed basket price includes mounting hardware or installation.

University of Minnesota Extension lists spider plants among houseplants it considers safe around pets. This is general houseplant guidance, not veterinary advice. Do not encourage pets to chew plants; contact a veterinarian if you have a concern about your pet.
