Most Bose soundbars can connect to most TVs, but not literally every TV. The television needs a compatible audio output—preferably HDMI ARC/eARC, or otherwise optical digital audio. Bluetooth may work with some model combinations, while analog-only or output-free TVs usually require an adapter or are incompatible.
Check the TV’s ports first
“Compatible” can mean more than simply getting sound. You may also want the TV remote to control volume and power, Dolby Atmos or surround sound, reliable automatic switching, and support for external devices such as a game console or cable box. The connection type affects all of those features.

Do not assume that a normal HDMI socket will work. The TV port must be labeled ARC or eARC. Bose’s connection guidance identifies HDMI ARC/eARC as the preferred method and optical as the fallback for supported products.
How to connect a Bose soundbar with HDMI ARC or eARC
ARC means Audio Return Channel: the TV sends its audio back through a compatible HDMI port. eARC is the higher-bandwidth version.

- Find the TV’s HDMI socket labeled ARC or eARC.
- Connect it to the Bose soundbar port labeled HDMI ARC, HDMI OUT (TV ARC), or HDMI eARC.
- Use a High-Speed HDMI cable or better.
- Set the TV’s audio output to external speakers, an audio system, receiver, or the equivalent label.
- Enable HDMI-CEC if volume, mute, or power control does not work.
- Where available, set digital audio output to Auto, Bitstream, Passthrough, or the television’s equivalent.
- Complete Bose app setup and TV-remote configuration after audio is working.
HDMI-CEC has different names by manufacturer. Examples include Samsung Anynet+, Sony BRAVIA Sync, LG Simplink, Vizio CEC, and CEC-related settings on Roku TVs. Names and behavior vary by model.
How to connect with optical
Optical is usually the best alternative when the TV lacks ARC/eARC but has an Optical, Digital Audio Out, or TOSLINK socket.
- Remove the protective caps from the optical cable, if present.
- Connect the TV’s optical output to the Bose soundbar’s OPTICAL IN.
- Select the TV or optical source on the Bose system.
- Set the TV speaker output to optical, external audio, or digital audio out.
- If there is no sound, temporarily change the TV’s digital output format to PCM.
Optical can handle ordinary TV audio and many compressed surround formats, but it does not carry HDMI-CEC commands or provide eARC bandwidth. You may need the Bose remote or app to adjust volume and power. Bose explains these limitations in its Smart Soundbar setup guidance.

Can Bluetooth connect a Bose soundbar to a TV?
Sometimes, but Bluetooth is not a universal TV solution. Both the exact Bose model and the exact TV must support Bluetooth audio transmission. A television that connects to Bluetooth headphones or keyboards may not support a Bluetooth soundbar, and some TVs permit only one paired audio device.
Bluetooth can also introduce lip-sync delay, dropouts, limited audio formats, and less predictable volume or power control. Pair the soundbar through the TV’s Bluetooth audio-device menu and test dialogue synchronization. If the result is unreliable, use HDMI ARC/eARC or optical instead.
Which connection is best for Dolby Atmos?
For a Bose soundbar that supports Dolby Atmos, HDMI ARC/eARC is the connection to favor—especially eARC. Bose documentation directs supported Atmos setups through HDMI ARC/eARC; optical is not the preferred route.

Atmos still depends on the Bose model, TV, source device, streaming app, content, and TV audio settings. A soundbar labeled “Dolby Atmos” does not mean Atmos will work through every connection. Standard ARC may have format limitations, while eARC generally offers more bandwidth. Verify the television’s passthrough specifications before buying specifically for Atmos.

Will the TV remote control the Bose soundbar?
HDMI ARC/eARC gives you the best chance of integrated volume, mute, and power control because it can use HDMI-CEC. Optical does not carry CEC, so the TV remote may not control the soundbar automatically.
If you use optical, program a compatible Bose remote where supported or use separate remotes. Bose’s remote-programming instructions also describe alternatives when HDMI-CEC is unavailable. Bose app setup is primarily for configuring and managing the soundbar; TV-brand recognition for remote control is a separate, model-dependent feature.

What if the TV has only analog or coaxial output?
A 3.5-mm headphone socket or red-and-white RCA outputs generally cannot connect directly to every Bose soundbar. Depending on the soundbar’s inputs, you may need an analog-to-optical converter. A television with digital coaxial output may need a coaxial-to-optical converter.
Adapters add another failure point and may affect volume control, audio formats, or compatibility. They do not create HDMI ARC/eARC, HDMI-CEC, or guaranteed Atmos support. If the TV has no audio output at all, a direct soundbar connection is not possible.

No sound over HDMI
- Confirm both cables are connected to ports labeled ARC/eARC, not ordinary HDMI.
- Choose external speakers or HDMI audio in the TV menu.
- Enable ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC.
- Set digital audio output temporarily to PCM.
- Try another High-Speed HDMI cable.
- Power off and unplug the TV, soundbar, and source devices; reconnect and restart them.
- Disconnect other HDMI devices temporarily to isolate a CEC conflict.
- Try optical as a diagnostic fallback.
If the picture works but sound does not, the HDMI cable may be carrying video while the TV’s audio-return function is disabled or connected to the wrong port. Bose discusses ARC/CEC problems and PCM troubleshooting in its no-audio support guide.

Sound works but the TV remote does not
Check whether you are using optical, whether HDMI-CEC is disabled, or whether the Bose remote setup is incomplete. Cross-brand CEC behavior can be unreliable even when everything is connected correctly. HDMI ARC/eARC remains the best option for unified control.
Sound cuts out
Intermittent audio can result from CEC conflicts, an unsuitable or defective cable, unsupported audio output, source-device passthrough, or outdated TV or Bose firmware. Try PCM, disconnect other HDMI devices, replace the cable, and test optical. Reset the soundbar only after these simpler checks and after consulting the guide for the exact model.
Which Bose soundbar fits the TV?
Bose products are not interchangeable. Inputs, app requirements, audio support, and accessory compatibility differ among the current Bose Smart Soundbar, Smart Ultra Soundbar, Bose TV Speaker, and older or refurbished models such as the Smart Soundbar 300, Soundbar 500, 700, 900, and SoundTouch 300.

External devices normally connect to the TV, with TV audio returning to the soundbar, but routing is model-specific. Do not assume every Bose bar has HDMI inputs for a console or Blu-ray player.
Likewise, Bose Surround Speakers work only with selected compatible soundbars. They are not compatible with every Bose home-theater product, including the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar according to Bose’s compatibility information.
