This usually gives the clearest dialogue, keeps voices anchored to the picture, and provides the best path for upward-firing Dolby Atmos drivers.
Above-TV placement is not automatically wrong. It can be the better compromise when the TV is mounted unusually low, there is no usable space beneath it, or an approved bracket allows the soundbar to tilt toward the seating position. The deciding factors are viewing height, driver clearance, soundbar design and aiming—not simply whether the bar is above or below the screen.

The placement rule that works in most rooms
- Keep the TV at a comfortable viewing height.
- Center the soundbar with the TV and main seating position.
- Keep its main drivers near seated ear height where practical.
- Aim the bar toward the listeners.
- Leave the front, sides and top unobstructed.
- Choose below or above only after those constraints are satisfied.
Dolby generally recommends placing a soundbar below and in front of the TV, approximately at ear level, with no obstruction between the bar and listeners. Dolby’s soundbar guidance also recommends positioning an Atmos bar in front of the display where possible.
Do not raise the television into an uncomfortable position merely to create a convenient soundbar location. A correctly aimed bar above a sensibly mounted TV is preferable to a technically “ideal” bar below a TV that is too high.

Why below the TV is usually best
Dialogue stays anchored to the picture
The center channel carries much of the dialogue. A bar below the screen normally keeps voices close to the actors’ apparent location and produces a more natural front soundstage. Centering the bar with both the TV and the principal seating position helps preserve left-right imaging. Bose recommends this centered arrangement for dialogue and front-stage accuracy.
The sound path is usually clearer
A bar on an open console or wall below the TV is less likely to fire over listeners’ heads. It is also less likely to be trapped between the ceiling and the top of the screen.
It is normally better for Atmos hardware
Many Dolby Atmos soundbars use upward-firing drivers. These reflect sound from the ceiling to create height effects, so they need open space above the enclosure. A bar in front of the display generally has a cleaner upward path than one mounted high, close to the ceiling, or beneath a shelf.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPerformance still depends on the model, ceiling, seating position and room surfaces. Dolby’s professional guidance gives an approximate ideal ceiling range of 7.5 to 12 feet (2.3 to 3.66 metres), but that is guidance for Atmos setups rather than a universal pass-or-fail rule for every soundbar.

When placing the soundbar above the TV makes sense
Above-TV placement can work when:
- The television is mounted unusually low.
- There is no suitable space beneath the screen.
- A console would block the display, remote sensor or soundbar drivers.
- The soundbar’s manual permits above-TV mounting.
- The bar can be tilted down toward the listening position.
- There is adequate space between the bar and ceiling.
- The model is primarily front-firing or does not depend heavily on upward-firing drivers.
A bar directly above the screen can still produce a convincing center image if its acoustic output is aimed correctly. The practical risk is height: a flat-mounted bar may make voices sound noticeably above the actors, particularly when the bar is far above seated ear level.
Above-TV mounting is also less convenient if the soundbar has touch controls. Use the manufacturer’s bracket or a mount specifically rated for the soundbar. Do not assume that a universal bracket is safe simply because it physically holds the enclosure.
How Dolby Atmos changes the decision
“Atmos soundbar” can describe several different designs:

- Virtualized Atmos: Relies more heavily on processing, room reflections and listener position.
- Atmos systems with rear speakers: Rear speakers provide much of the surround envelopment, but the bar’s position still affects dialogue anchoring and the front stage.
For an upward-firing model, avoid placing the bar under a shelf, inside a recess or immediately beneath the ceiling. Do not cover its top surface with décor, a cabinet lip or a television mount. Side-firing drivers also need open space on both sides.

Dolby recommends positioning an Atmos soundbar around seated ear height or slightly above for optimum playback, while warning against placing it so low that the listener looks down onto the top of the unit. The exact relationship is model-dependent, so the soundbar’s installation manual takes priority.
How high should the soundbar be?
Use seated ear height as a target rather than relying on one universal measurement from the floor. Bose gives a typical seated ear-height range of approximately 36 to 48 inches from the floor, but seating, screen size and room layout vary.
The soundbar’s physical midpoint is not necessarily its acoustic axis. A bar with angled drivers, upward-firing speakers or a manufacturer-specific bracket may need a different position. If the bar is above ear level, tilt it down toward the main seats only if the manufacturer permits that angle. If it is below the TV, keep it level unless the mounting instructions specify otherwise.

The TV should be positioned first for comfortable viewing. The soundbar is not a reason to mount a television too high.

Console placement: the common installation mistake
A soundbar sitting on furniture is not automatically correctly placed. Avoid:
- Closed-front cabinets and doors.
- Deep shelves that push the bar behind the front edge.
- Shelves above an upward-firing Atmos bar.
- Fabric, décor or a cabinet lip in front of the grille.
- Side walls directly beside side-firing drivers.
Keep the bar at the front edge of a shelf if it must sit on furniture, while following the model’s clearance requirements. For example, Sonos specifies at least 2 inches (50 mm) between Beam and the TV and recommends keeping Beam at the front of a shelf with at least 2 inches of clearance on both sides. Sonos Ray specifies at least 2 inches from the TV and at least 1 inch above the bar for access to its controls. These are model-specific instructions, not universal soundbar rules: Beam guide and Ray guide.
Keep the TV’s remote sensor clear
A soundbar directly in front of a television can block the TV’s infrared sensor. Test power, volume, input switching, streaming-device controls and voice commands after positioning the bar.

If the remote becomes unreliable, move the soundbar forward, raise it slightly, enable HDMI-CEC where supported, or follow the TV and soundbar’s remote-learning procedure. Sonos specifically warns about blocking the TV’s IR sensor when Beam or Ray is placed on a stand.

Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
Wall mounting: useful, but not automatically better
Wall mounting can remove console obstructions and improve projection when the bar is correctly positioned. It is not inherently acoustically superior, however. Check all of the following before drilling:
- The mount is designed for the exact model, weight and shape.
- The TV mount leaves enough vertical separation.
- The bracket does not change the soundbar’s intended angle.
- HDMI, power and optical cables have enough slack without strain.
- The wall can safely support the load through suitable studs or masonry fixings.
- Top, side and front driver paths remain open.
After moving the bar, rerun the manufacturer’s room calibration. Calibration systems are model-dependent; for example, Bose notes that ADAPTiQ is available only on supported products.
Fireplaces and unusually high TVs
A fireplace is a TV-height problem before it is a soundbar problem. The screen may already be too high for comfortable viewing, while heat, masonry, cable routing and limited ceiling clearance complicate installation. Placing the soundbar above the TV usually makes the bar even higher; placing it below may still leave it far above ear level.

Below or above? A practical decision table
| Room condition | Best starting choice | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Open console with comfortable TV height | Below the TV | Keep the bar forward and centered. |
| Upward-firing Atmos model | Below the TV | Protect the ceiling-reflection path. |
| Very low-mounted TV | Above the TV may work | Tilt the bar toward the seating position if approved. |
| No usable space beneath the display | Above the TV | Check height, ceiling clearance and mounting instructions. |
| Closed cabinet or deep recess | Neither as currently arranged | Change the furniture or choose a model suited to the recess. |
| TV above a fireplace | Neither automatically solves it | Resolve TV height and heat constraints first. |
| Bar significantly off-center | Reposition the bar | Furniture layout should not dictate poor alignment. |
Installation and testing checklist
- Measure everything: Record the TV and bar width, height, depth, weight, driver locations and mounting points. For example, Sonos lists Arc and Arc Ultra at 46.38 inches wide, 2.95 inches high and 4.35 inches deep on its soundbar comparison page.
- Set the TV height first: Confirm that seated viewing is comfortable before choosing the bar position.
- Mark the horizontal center: Align the bar with the screen and main seating position.
- Test below the TV: Use the console or painter’s tape to mark a wall position. Check the screen, IR sensor, remote and cable ports.
- Check clearances: Keep front, side and top drivers open, following the manual.
- Check the listener distance: Dolby’s professional soundbar guidance suggests approximately 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 metres) or more for an ideal Atmos experience, though this is not a universal minimum.
- Mount only with approved hardware: Above-TV installations should use a compatible bracket and, where permitted, a downward aim toward the listeners.
- Use the best connection available: HDMI ARC or eARC is generally preferable when supported by the TV and soundbar. Compatibility and supported formats depend on every device in the signal path. Samsung notes that Dolby Atmos requires an HDMI connection in its documented setup guidance: Samsung support.
- Test dialogue: Voices should appear to come from the screen rather than clearly above or beside it.
- Test Atmos and surround: Use known compatible content and confirm that the system reports the intended audio format.
- Check lip-sync: Use the TV or soundbar’s audio-delay control if speech and picture do not align.
- Run calibration last: Perform room correction only after the bar reaches its final position.
- Inspect the finished installation: Verify HDMI-CEC, remote control, cable strain, wall security and access to touch controls.
The bottom line
Choose below the TV unless the room creates a genuine constraint. It is normally the best balance of dialogue placement, ear-level listening, TV ergonomics and Atmos clearance. Choose above the TV when it keeps the television at a comfortable height and the soundbar can remain unobstructed, supported by the correct bracket and aimed at the seating position. Choose neither until the furniture, recess, fireplace or TV height problem is corrected.
