For most installations, setting up a Sonos Beam requires two connections: power and a TV audio connection. The critical detail is using the television’s HDMI ARC/eARC port—not an ordinary HDMI port—then completing setup in the current Sonos app. Optical is a workable fallback for older TVs, but it does not provide Dolby Atmos or HDMI-CEC television control.

Before you begin

This guide applies to both Sonos Beam generations, with important differences:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Beam (Gen 1): Compatible with the current Sonos app and, according to Sonos, the S1 Controller app.
  • Beam (Gen 2): Uses the current Sonos app and is not compatible with S1. It is the Beam generation associated with Dolby Atmos support.

Identify the generation from the product or packaging label, the model or serial information, or the product information screen in the Sonos app. Do not rely on color or appearance alone.

Have the following ready:

  • Sonos Beam and its power cord
  • The supplied HDMI cable
  • The included optical audio adapter if your TV has optical output but no HDMI ARC/eARC
  • A television with HDMI ARC/eARC or digital optical output
  • A broadband internet connection and Wi-Fi network
  • An iOS or Android phone or tablet with the current Sonos app
  • A Sonos account

The Beam supports 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and also has a 10/100 Ethernet port. During setup, keep your phone and Beam on the same local network. Guest networks, client isolation, VPNs, mesh handoffs, and restricted phone network permissions can interfere with discovery.

  • Effortless setup with only two cables and smart Trueplay tuning.

See Sonos’s official Beam setup instructions for current app prompts and compatibility details.

Place the Beam correctly

Put the Beam horizontally on a stable, level surface below or above the TV. Do not place it vertically or on its side.

  • On a TV stand, leave at least 2 inches (50 mm) between the Beam and the television.
  • If it sits on a shelf, place it near the front rather than deep inside a recess.
  • Leave at least 2 inches of space on both sides on a shelf.
  • Keep at least 1 inch (25 mm) above the Beam so its touch controls remain accessible.
  • Keep the ends at least 1 inch (30 mm) from walls or other obstructions for best sound.
  • Do not block the television’s infrared sensor.

These clearances are practical placement guidance, not a guarantee that every room will sound identical. A wall-mounted Beam can work well below or above a wall-mounted TV, but use a mount specifically designed to fit the Beam and plan cable routing before fixing the bracket. Run Trueplay again after changing from stand placement to wall mounting.

Keep the Beam in its final listening position before tuning it. Large furniture changes, relocation, or a new mounting position can change the room’s reflections.

Choose the correct TV connection

Your TV has Use What you get
HDMI ARC or eARC Supplied HDMI cable Preferred connection, TV audio return, and HDMI-CEC control where supported
Digital optical output but no ARC/eARC Supplied HDMI cable plus optical adapter Basic TV audio, but no HDMI-CEC control, TV voice power commands, or Atmos
Neither Check TV compatibility or consult the TV manufacturer The Beam cannot receive TV audio through a normal HDMI input alone

HDMI ARC/eARC: the preferred method

Look at the labels beside the TV’s HDMI sockets. Use the port marked ARC, eARC, or ARC/eARC. Connect one end of the supplied HDMI cable to that port and the other end to the Beam.

A regular HDMI input is not interchangeable with ARC/eARC. Ordinary HDMI inputs receive video and audio; the ARC/eARC port can return the television’s audio to the soundbar. HDMI also enables HDMI-CEC features such as volume control from a compatible TV remote and, depending on the television, voice-based TV control.

Beam (Gen 2) requires an HDMI ARC/eARC connection for Dolby Atmos. ARC is sufficient for many audio formats, while eARC is needed for certain higher-bandwidth formats identified in Sonos’s specifications.

Optical: use it when ARC/eARC is unavailable

  1. Remove the protective cap from the optical adapter.
  2. Attach the adapter to the supplied HDMI cable.
  3. Connect the optical end to the TV’s digital optical output.
  4. Connect the HDMI end to the Beam.
  5. Continue with the Sonos app’s TV setup.

The optical connector is D-shaped. Align it carefully and never force it into the port. Optical can deliver TV audio, but it does not carry HDMI-CEC, so HDMI-based remote and voice TV-control functions are unavailable. Optical also cannot deliver Dolby Atmos through the Beam.

Connect other HDMI devices sensibly

Before the app’s TV setup, disconnect existing home-theater or surround equipment. Connect devices such as cable boxes, game consoles, and Blu-ray players directly to the TV, then connect the Beam to the TV’s ARC/eARC port. This makes the TV the switching hub and lets it return audio to the Beam.

Turn the TV on before beginning TV setup. The exact audio format ultimately depends on the television, source device, application, content, and output settings.

Set up the Beam in the Sonos app

For a new Sonos system

  1. Install and open the current Sonos app for iOS or Android.
  2. Choose Speaker or component when prompted.
  3. Create or sign in to your Sonos account.
  4. Select Add when the Beam appears.
  5. Follow the in-app instructions to connect it to Wi-Fi and assign it to a room.
  6. Add music and other content services if desired.
  7. Complete the TV setup when the app tells you to connect the cable.

For an existing Sonos system

  1. Open the Sonos app.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Add Speaker or Component.
  4. Follow the prompts to add the Beam.

Sonos may adjust labels, icons, or screen order as the app changes, so treat these as the current official path rather than a promise that every device displays identical wording.

Configure the TV and remote

Television menus differ by manufacturer and operating system. Look for settings with names similar to these:

  • HDMI-CEC: Enable it for HDMI-based device control. Manufacturers give CEC different brand names.
  • HDMI ARC/eARC: Enable it if the television lists this separately.
  • Audio output: Choose an external audio system, receiver, ARC/eARC, or equivalent option.
  • Digital audio output: Try automatic, pass-through, bitstream, Dolby Digital, or the equivalent compatible setting when troubleshooting.
  • Dolby Atmos: Enable Atmos pass-through or compatible output if the TV provides that option.

Do not assume a menu path from another television will match yours. If a setting or port is absent, consult the TV manufacturer’s manual.

After TV setup, test volume up, volume down, mute, and power. HDMI-CEC may make a compatible remote work automatically. If it does not:

  1. Run the Sonos app’s remote-control setup again.
  2. For an infrared remote, point it directly at the Beam.
  3. Confirm HDMI-CEC is enabled when using ARC/eARC.
  4. Check that the TV has not reverted to its internal speakers.
  5. Disable conflicting soundbar or universal-remote profiles if commands are duplicated.

Remote behavior depends on the TV, remote technology, CEC implementation, and connection type. With optical, expect to configure infrared control rather than HDMI-CEC.

Run Trueplay room tuning

Trueplay measures how sound reflects from walls, furnishings, and other surfaces, then adjusts the Beam for the room. Sonos requires a compatible iOS device for Trueplay.

Sonos Beam G2 Soundbar + Sub Mini Subwoofer - Black
  • Take your TV, music, and gaming to the next level with this compact smart soundbar and subwoofer.
  • This set is ideal for smaller or medium-sized rooms and low to moderate volume levels.
  • Use the Sonos app to easily set up your home theater system and sync with your existing TV remote.
  • Sub Mini balances out the lowest frequencies so Beam sounds even better.
  • When the TV is off, stream music and more over WiFi from hundreds of services using the Sonos app, your voice, and Apple AirPlay 2.
  1. Open Settings in the Sonos app.
  2. Select the Beam or its room.
  3. Select Trueplay.
  4. Follow the on-screen movement and measurement instructions.

Advanced tuning takes about five minutes. Keep the room quiet, hold the iPhone or iPad as directed, and move through the listening area rather than standing in one place. Keep the Beam’s microphone enabled; microphone-dependent features such as Trueplay are unavailable when it is off.

Run Trueplay from the Beam’s final position. Repeat it after relocating the soundbar, adding major furniture, or changing between stand and wall-mounted placement. Sonos recommends advanced tuning particularly for larger rooms; open-plan spaces may produce less precise results.

Choose settings for dialogue and everyday listening

Speech Enhancement

Turn on Speech Enhancement when voices are difficult to understand. It boosts voice frequencies to clarify dialogue. It is a better first response to unclear speech than making large bass or treble changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Night Sound

Use Night Sound in an apartment, late at night, or whenever loud effects disturb other people. It reduces the intensity of loud sounds while increasing quieter sounds. It changes dynamic range; it is not automatically a higher-fidelity mode.

EQ and loudness

The app provides bass, treble, and loudness controls. Make small adjustments after Trueplay and listen to familiar dialogue and music before changing anything further. Extreme EQ cannot repair an incorrect ARC connection, unsupported audio format, or badly obstructed placement.

Volume normalization, where available for particular content or app playback, is content- and app-dependent. It is not a TV-connection fix and does not create surround sound or Atmos.

Verify TV audio, Atmos, and setup success

A successful installation should pass these observable checks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The Beam appears in the Sonos app and is assigned to the intended room.
  • The app identifies the TV connection successfully.
  • TV sound comes from the Beam rather than the television speakers.
  • The TV remote changes volume and mute as expected.
  • Music plays from the Sonos app with the TV off.
  • The Sonos app’s Now Playing screen identifies the decoded audio format where applicable.
  • The Beam’s status light behaves normally rather than indicating an error.

To test Atmos, you need a Beam (Gen 2), HDMI ARC/eARC, a compatible TV and source path, an app and title that actually provide Atmos, and suitable source output settings. A title labelled Atmos does not guarantee Atmos output: the subscription, content, TV passthrough, source device, and audio conversion settings all matter. Check the decoded format in Now Playing rather than relying on the content label.

Sonos lists Dolby Digital 5.0/5.1 and DTS Digital Surround support for its home-theater products, but DTS is not available for home-theater products using the S1 Controller app. Some Blu-ray players and consoles can transcode DTS to a supported format. This limitation is particularly relevant to Beam Gen 1 systems that remain on S1.

Troubleshoot common problems

The Beam is not found

  1. Confirm that the Beam has power.
  2. Confirm that the phone is connected to the intended home Wi-Fi.
  3. Move the phone closer to the Beam and router.
  4. Restart the Sonos app.
  5. Temporarily connect the Beam to the router with Ethernet if practical.
  6. Follow Sonos’s current Product Not Found guidance.

Do not factory-reset immediately. Resetting can erase setup information without fixing a router, app-permission, network-isolation, or compatibility problem.

There is no TV sound

  1. Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
  2. Confirm it is connected to the TV port labelled ARC/eARC.
  3. Confirm the TV is powered on.
  4. Set the TV audio output to the external audio system or ARC/eARC path.
  5. Enable HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC if listed separately.
  6. Try a compatible automatic, pass-through, bitstream, or Dolby Digital output setting.
  7. With optical, confirm the adapter is attached and connected to the TV’s optical output, not an input.
  8. Run the Sonos app’s TV setup again.
  9. Power-cycle the TV, Beam, and connected source devices to recover a failed ARC handshake.
  10. Use Sonos’s TV requirements and HDMI ARC troubleshooting guidance.

TV audio cuts out

Check cable seating, the ARC/eARC port, CEC, and the TV’s output format first. Temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices and reconnect them one at a time. If the problem follows one source, inspect that device’s bitstream or passthrough setting. A wired Ethernet connection may improve network stability, but it will not correct an incorrect TV port or unsupported audio format.

The remote does not change volume

Rerun remote setup, confirm the TV is using external audio, and enable CEC for ARC/eARC. Point an IR remote directly at the Beam. Remove duplicate universal-remote profiles. Optical installations require IR rather than HDMI-CEC control.

Atmos does not appear

  • Confirm the Beam is Gen 2.
  • Confirm it uses HDMI ARC/eARC, not optical.
  • Check that the TV supports the required Atmos passthrough path.
  • Confirm the app, title, subscription, and source device provide Atmos.
  • Set the source to a compatible bitstream or passthrough mode.
  • Ensure the TV is not converting audio to stereo or another incompatible format.
  • Check the decoded format in Sonos Now Playing.

Trueplay will not run

Use a compatible iOS device, enable the Beam microphone, allow requested microphone access, and keep the room quiet. Start again from the Beam’s current final position.

Wi-Fi setup fails

Ensure the router broadcasts a supported 2.4 GHz network. Temporarily avoid guest networks, VPNs, and client-isolation settings. Wiring the Beam to the router can help discovery or stability, but Ethernet is not required for every installation and does not solve TV-audio problems.

Expanding the system later

Only add components after the Beam works reliably by itself. A Sub Mini or Sub can add low-frequency impact; compatible Sonos Era speakers can provide rear surround channels when the room has practical positions beside or behind the seating area. Neither is a remedy for missing TV audio or unclear dialogue. Re-run room tuning after major system changes.

For a less expensive Sonos option, the Ray is a smaller-room alternative, not a like-for-like Atmos replacement. The Arc Ultra is a larger, more premium option for bigger rooms or buyers seeking a broader front soundstage. Check Sonos’s current product pages for availability and specifications.
