For most setups, place the soundbar centered just below and in front of the TV, with its grille unobstructed and near seated ear level. Above the TV can work when the screen is mounted unusually low or when that position better suits the room—but the bar should still face the listening area, and the soundbar’s manual takes priority. No cited setup guidance establishes a universal sound-quality winner for every room and model.
Why below the TV is the usual choice
Dolby describes below-TV placement as typical because it directs sound toward listeners without obstruction. Its general guidance is to keep the soundbar close below or directly in front of the TV. TCL likewise recommends positioning the bar below the center of the screen and around seated ear level.
Keep the bar centered with the display when practical, aimed into the room, and clear of objects that cover its grille or drivers. On a shelf or console, avoid pushing it behind the furniture edge or enclosing it. Dolby advises against placing a soundbar behind or inside enclosed furniture; Bose’s Smart Soundbar 700 owner guide says to put that model’s front as close as possible to the shelf or stand’s front edge.
When placing it above the TV makes sense
Above-TV placement is a reasonable exception when a TV is mounted unusually low and putting the soundbar beneath it would leave the bar too low for the listening position. Dolby identifies this as an acceptable option in that situation. Bose’s Smart Soundbar 700 guide also permits placing that model directly above the TV, with its grille facing the room.

That model-specific permission is not a blanket rule for other soundbars. Check the instructions for your exact model, and position the bar so its front is not blocked by the TV, a shelf, or nearby decor. Keep it aimed toward the seats rather than tilted toward the ceiling or floor without a manufacturer’s reason to do so.
Choose a position that fits the room and soundbar

Special considerations for Dolby Atmos soundbars
Some Atmos soundbars use upward-firing drivers to create overhead effects by reflecting sound from the ceiling. Dolby’s soundbar setup guide calls for a clear line of sight from those drivers to the ceiling, so avoid putting the bar under a cabinet or soffit that blocks that path. The guide recommends mounting the bar at or slightly above a seated listener’s ear level for optimum playback of overhead effects.

Those are Atmos-specific setup considerations, not a universal height measurement for every soundbar. Dolby’s published ceiling-height range of 7.5–12 feet concerns Atmos reproduction conditions; it does not show that mounting a bar above or below a TV produces better sound.
What placement can—and cannot—tell you about sound quality
Official setup recommendations support a practical default, not a measured comparison proving that below-TV placement always sounds better than above-TV placement. Actual results depend on the model’s driver layout, the room, TV height, obstructions, and where listeners sit. Keep the soundbar unobstructed and close to the display, then use the manufacturer’s placement instructions for any model-specific requirements.

For a TCL soundbar setup, TCL recommends keeping the subwoofer less than 9.8 feet from the soundbar. That distance is specific to the relevant TCL guidance and should not be treated as a rule for other brands.

- Confirm that the grille and any upward-firing drivers will not be blocked by the TV, furniture, or trim.
- If attaching a bracket to a TV mount, verify that both products are compatible and that the mount remains within its load limits.
- Position the bar near seated ear level where practical, while accounting for the TV height and the room’s layout.
