Sony’s 2024 soundbar launch was a premium two-model refresh, not a soundbar range for every budget. The BRAVIA Theatre Bar 8 (HT-A8000) and Bar 9 (HT-A9000) are Dolby Atmos-capable standalone bars that can later be expanded with Sony subwoofers and wireless rear speakers. The Bar 8 is the more sensible value choice; the wider, more expensive Bar 9 is aimed at larger rooms and buyers committed to Sony’s BRAVIA ecosystem.
Sony announced the BRAVIA Theatre home-audio range on April 18, 2024. The same announcement also included the BRAVIA Theatre Quad, a four-speaker wireless system, and BRAVIA Theatre U, a personal neckband speaker. Neither is a conventional soundbar. Sony’s launch announcement therefore supports a broader home-cinema story, but not the claim that its new soundbars cover every price bracket.
What Sony actually launched in 2024
| Product | Model | Type | What it means for buyers |
|---|---|---|---|
| BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 | HT-A9000 | Premium standalone soundbar | Flagship single-bar option, expandable with optional speakers |
| BRAVIA Theatre Bar 8 | HT-A8000 | Premium standalone soundbar | Lower-cost, shorter alternative with the same core immersive-sound platform |
| BRAVIA Theatre Quad | HT-A9M2 | Four-speaker wireless home-theater system | Not a soundbar; designed for physical front, center and surround placement |
| BRAVIA Theatre U | HT-AN7 | Wearable personal speaker | For individual listening rather than room-filling cinema sound |
Bar 8 versus Bar 9
| Criterion | Bar 8 (HT-A8000) | Bar 9 (HT-A9000) |
|---|---|---|
| Sony’s position | Step-down premium bar | Flagship standalone bar |
| Amplifier channels | 11 | 13 |
| Dimensions | 1,100 × 64 × 113 mm (43⅜ × 2⅝ × 4½ in) | 1,300 × 64 × 113 mm (51¼ × 2⅝ × 4½ in) |
| Best fit | Medium-to-large rooms and narrower TV furniture | Larger rooms needing a broader front soundstage |
| Expansion | Compatible Sony subwoofers and rear speakers | Compatible Sony subwoofers and rear speakers |
| Gaming | HDMI 2.1 features, including high-frame-rate passthrough | HDMI 2.1 features, including high-frame-rate passthrough |
Specifications are from Sony’s HT-A8000 support page and HT-A9000 support page. Channel count is not a direct sound-quality score. In practice, the Bar 8’s shorter cabinet is easier to place, while the Bar 9’s extra width and amplifier channels make more sense when the room and seating area are large enough to use them.
Prices and what they do—and do not—include
The original U.S. list prices were approximately $999.99 for the Bar 8 and $1,499.99 for the Bar 9. Sony’s U.S. store displayed the Bar 8 at $799.99, reduced from $999.99, while the Bar 9 page listed a $1,499.99 MSRP when checked for this article. Prices, stock and promotions can change; verify the current offer on the Bar 8 product page and Bar 9 product page. Those are bar-only prices. A subwoofer or rear speakers are additional purchases.

What Sony’s immersive-sound features really do
360 Spatial Sound Mapping
Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping combines room calibration with signal processing to create phantom speaker positions around the listener. It can make a single bar sound wider and more enveloping, but phantom speakers are not physical speakers. Results vary with room geometry, ceiling height, reflective surfaces, furniture, seating position and calibration accuracy.
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X
Both bars support object-based formats including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Decoding an Atmos soundtrack does not guarantee ceiling-like effects. You also need an Atmos-capable source, a suitable streaming or disc track, correct TV audio settings, and an HDMI connection that can carry the signal. Sony’s Help Guide documents HDMI eARC/ARC connections and supported formats.

Room optimization
Run Sony’s calibration after placement and again if you substantially move the bar, TV or seating. Optimization can improve timing and the virtual sound field, but it cannot correct every problem in an open-plan, asymmetrical or heavily absorbent room.
BRAVIA TV integration
With compatible televisions, Acoustic Center Sync lets the TV and soundbar share center-channel duties. Sony specifically identifies 2024 BRAVIA 7, BRAVIA 8 and BRAVIA 9 families for its exclusive BRAVIA audio features. Check your exact model and connection requirements in Sony’s compatibility article; owning any BRAVIA TV does not automatically provide every feature.

Gaming and HDMI requirements
Sony lists HDMI 2.1 passthrough on the Bar 9 for 4K/120Hz and 8K/60Hz, along with VRR and ALLM. These capabilities matter for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and compatible PCs, but they only work when the console or PC, television, cables and selected HDMI settings support them. “8K support” means supported passthrough conditions; the soundbar is not an 8K display.
- Use the TV’s HDMI eARC port when routing devices through the television.
- Enable eARC and passthrough or bitstream output where the TV provides those controls.
- For a console, confirm that the complete chain preserves 4K/120Hz, HDR, VRR and ALLM.
- If the TV has no suitable ARC/eARC connection, check its audio and video limitations before buying.
Do you need a subwoofer or rear speakers?
| Configuration | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Bar only | Cleanest installation and lowest total cost | Less deep bass and less convincing physical surround |
| Bar plus subwoofer | Stronger low-frequency impact for action films and music | Higher cost, more floor space and possible neighbor disturbance |
| Bar plus subwoofer and rear speakers | Most convincing surround presentation in Sony’s expandable system | Total cost can approach that of a complete multi-speaker theater package |
Neither bar requires a subwoofer to operate. Sony’s Help Guide explains that compatible subwoofers and rear speakers can be added through the app. Sony’s A-Series catalog identifies current accessory families, but accessory pricing and bundles should be checked at the time of purchase.

Setup, streaming and troubleshooting
Initial setup
- Connect the bar to the television’s HDMI eARC or ARC port.
- Connect the bar to mains power.
- Install Sony | BRAVIA Connect on a compatible smartphone.
- Open the app and follow its on-screen setup instructions.
- Run room optimization.
- Update the bar, app and any optional speakers.
- Add a compatible subwoofer or rear speakers through the app if required.
BRAVIA Connect handles setup, room optimization, remote functions, software updates and accessory pairing. Buyers expecting a completely remote-only installation should plan on using a smartphone.
The Help Guide confirms Bluetooth playback, Spotify Connect and Apple AirPlay. It does not establish universal support for every music service or protocol, so do not assume Google Cast, DLNA or Tidal Connect without checking the exact specification.

If setup or operation fails
- Check that every device is connected to the intended HDMI jack.
- Reseat both HDMI ends and confirm the TV’s eARC/ARC and audio-output settings.
- Make sure ventilation openings are clear.
- Disconnect AC power, wait several minutes, then reconnect it.
- Check Sony support in BRAVIA Connect or on Sony’s support site.
- If the problem continues, reset the system. Sony says to hold the bar’s power button for more than 10 seconds; this returns settings to their initial state.
- Contact Sony support or an authorized dealer if the reset does not resolve the fault.
Which model should you buy?
Choose the Bar 8 when
- You want premium Sony Atmos processing at a lower price.
- Your TV furniture has limited width; the 43⅜-inch cabinet is easier to fit.
- Your room is medium-sized and the seating area is not unusually wide.
- You may add a subwoofer later but do not need one immediately.
- The Bar 8 is substantially cheaper than the Bar 9 at the time you buy.
Choose the Bar 9 when
- You want the top standalone bar in Sony’s 2024 range.
- Your room can benefit from a 51¼-inch front soundstage.
- You value the additional HDMI 2.1 gaming specifications.
- You are comfortable paying the premium and may build a Sony wireless system later.
Skip both when
- You need physical rear channels immediately or want a subwoofer and rears in the box.
- Your budget is below the premium segment.
- Your room is open, highly asymmetrical or acoustically difficult and you expect virtual surround to behave like discrete speakers.
- Music-service flexibility matters more than BRAVIA integration.
Alternatives worth comparing
A Sonos Arc Ultra is a stronger candidate for buyers prioritizing Sonos multiroom software, but it is less suitable if HDMI video passthrough or Sony-specific BRAVIA features are central. Samsung’s flagship Q-series packages can be more attractive when a subwoofer and rear speakers are included. Bose’s Smart Ultra Soundbar favors simplicity and dialogue-focused use. Discounted Sony HT-A7000, HT-A5000 and HT-A3000 models may also be sensible, provided you check their older compatibility and feature sets. Current prices and availability for these alternatives are not stated here because they require a separate, current commercial check.
TV and room-fit checklist
- Measure TV stand width and leg spacing before choosing the 43⅜-inch Bar 8 or 51¼-inch Bar 9.
- Check whether the television or wall mount could obstruct upward-firing drivers.
- Leave clearance around the bar and do not block ventilation.
- Consider how an open-plan layout or low, absorbent ceiling may affect virtual height effects.
- Place the main seating position where Sony’s calibration can measure it accurately.
- Plan a subwoofer location that will not create unacceptable vibration for neighbors.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Sony’s 2024 lineup is two premium soundbars, not an every-budget ladder. Buy the Bar 8 for the better value and easier fit; choose the Bar 9 for a larger room, wider soundstage and deeper commitment to Sony’s expandable ecosystem. If you require physical surround speakers, bundled bass or a lower price, compare a complete package or an older discounted model instead.
