Sony Sound Bar Not Working? Troubleshoot No Sound, HDMI ARC, Bluetooth, Power, and Subwoofer Problems

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Sony sound bar not working” can describe several different problems: no power, no TV sound, a failed HDMI ARC/eARC connection, Bluetooth trouble, silent surround speakers, or audio that cuts out. Start with the universal checks below, then follow the section matching your symptom. Do not use a generic factory-reset button combination—Sony reset procedures vary by model.

Start here: the five-minute fix

  1. Confirm the soundbar is powered and the wall outlet works. Test the outlet with another device.
  2. Turn off mute on both the TV and soundbar, then raise the volume.
  3. Press INPUT repeatedly until the connected source appears, such as TV, HDMI, OPTICAL, or Bluetooth.
  4. Turn off the TV and soundbar. Unplug the soundbar for about one minute, then reconnect it and try again. Sony lists power, input selection, cabling, TV output settings, and HDMI control among common causes of soundbar problems. Sony’s troubleshooting guide covers no power, no sound, abnormal sound, and Bluetooth pairing.
  5. Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI or optical cable. If possible, test with a known-good cable.
  6. Test another source. Bluetooth or an internal TV app can quickly show whether the soundbar itself produces audio.

If Bluetooth works but the TV does not, the amplifiers and speakers are probably functioning; the more likely problem is the TV setting, cable, input, or HDMI handshake. That test does not prove every component is healthy.

Choose the symptom that matches your problem

If the soundbar has no power or is frozen

  1. Try a different wall outlet, preferably without a switched power strip.
  2. Reseat the power cord at the soundbar and outlet.
  3. Disconnect HDMI, optical, USB, and analog cables, leaving only power connected.
  4. Try the soundbar’s physical power and input buttons. A failed remote battery or stuck remote button does not necessarily mean the soundbar is defective.
  5. Leave the unit unplugged for several minutes, reconnect it, and try again.

Stop troubleshooting immediately if you notice smoke, a burning smell, liquid exposure, arcing, a damaged cord, or abnormal heat. Do not open the cabinet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If there is still no indicator, display, or response from the physical controls after the outlet and cord checks, repeated resets are unlikely to help. Use the exact model’s Sony support and repair information.

  • Immersive sound - Enjoy a three-dimensional virtual surround sound experience with DTS Virtual:X and more detail with Dolby Audio.
  • Easy setup - Just plug in the included HDMI cable to the HDMI eARC/ARC port on your TV to instantly enjoy audio that's always in sync.

  • Stream audio with Bluetooth - Connect your phone or tablet via Bluetooth to fill the room with your favorite music.

If the soundbar turns on but produces no sound

  1. Select the input connected to the TV or playback device.
  2. Raise the soundbar volume and confirm mute is off.
  3. Test Bluetooth or another source.
  4. On the TV, select the soundbar or Audio system instead of the built-in TV speakers.
  5. Confirm that the cable is connected to the correct ports.
  6. Try a known-good cable.
  7. Set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM as a compatibility test, especially with optical audio.
  8. Check for TV and soundbar firmware updates.
  9. Reset the soundbar only after recording its settings and confirming the exact model procedure.

When only one app, channel, or playback device fails, investigate that source’s audio output and format before resetting the soundbar.

HDMI ARC/eARC troubleshooting

HDMI is usually the best TV connection because it can carry audio and HDMI-CEC control, but it is also sensitive to incorrect ports and handshake problems.

Use the correct ports

Device Correct connection
TV HDMI input labeled ARC or eARC/ARC
Soundbar HDMI output labeled HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC)

Do not connect the TV’s ARC cable to a normal HDMI input on the soundbar. Sony’s connection guidance distinguishes the HDMI OUT ARC/eARC jack from HDMI IN jacks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Perform Sony’s two-minute ARC/eARC reset

  1. Turn off the TV and soundbar.
  2. Disconnect both power cords.
  3. Disconnect the HDMI cable from both devices.
  4. Wait two minutes.
  5. Reconnect the HDMI cable from the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT ARC/eARC port.
  6. Reconnect power and turn on the TV and soundbar.
  7. Refresh the TV’s HDMI-CEC or BRAVIA Sync device list.

If the soundbar does not appear in the TV’s device list, replace the HDMI cable. During diagnosis, avoid adapters, extenders, switchers, and unusually long cables. Sony recommends a high-speed HDMI cable for ARC and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for eARC. See Sony’s ARC/eARC troubleshooting procedure.

Check the TV settings

On compatible Sony BRAVIA televisions, menu labels vary by model and software version. Paths may resemble:

  • SIMPLE SETUP: A single connection from this compact soundbar to the TV via an optical audio cable (included) or an HDMI cable (sold separately) has you up and running in minutes
  • Settings → Display & Sound → Audio output → Speakers → Audio system
  • Settings → Sound → Speakers → Audio system

Enable BRAVIA Sync control or HDMI-CEC. Enable Control for HDMI on the soundbar. Set ARC/eARC or TV Audio Input Mode to On or Auto, where available. Sony’s TV-audio guidance notes that labels differ between BRAVIA models.

Disconnect other HDMI devices temporarily. A streaming box, receiver, game console, or switch can disrupt HDMI-CEC. Reconnect devices one at a time to identify the conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If optical audio is not working

  1. Connect the TV’s Optical OUT to the soundbar’s OPTICAL IN.
  2. Select OPTICAL on the soundbar.
  3. Set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM.
  4. Confirm the TV is sending audio to the external system rather than its internal speakers.
  5. Try another optical cable and check that protective caps have been removed.

Optical can be a useful diagnostic fallback. If it works while ARC does not, the likely fault is in HDMI-CEC, ARC/eARC negotiation, the HDMI cable, or the TV settings—not necessarily the soundbar’s entire audio system.

Optical does not provide the same two-way control as HDMI-CEC. Automatic power, volume, and input switching may not work, and audio-format support is more limited. PCM improves compatibility but can reduce advanced surround-format capability.

Bluetooth pairing and connection problems

Bluetooth will not pair

  1. Put the soundbar into Bluetooth-pairing mode using the instructions for your model.
  2. Forget or remove the old Sony soundbar entry from the phone, tablet, or TV.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off and on again.
  4. Move the source device close to the soundbar.
  5. Disconnect another device that may already be connected.
  6. Restart both devices and try pairing from a second source device.

Bluetooth connects but there is no sound

Select Bluetooth input on the soundbar, raise volume on both devices, and confirm the source is routing media audio to the soundbar. Use only one active TV-audio path while troubleshooting.

Sony specifically documents a conflict between HDMI and Bluetooth: using both simultaneously can prevent audio. Disconnect Bluetooth when using HDMI; to return to Bluetooth, disconnect HDMI first and then select Bluetooth input. See Sony’s HDMI/Bluetooth guidance.

If the subwoofer is not working

  • Confirm the subwoofer is powered and check its status light.
  • Move it close to the soundbar while diagnosing the wireless link.
  • Power-reset both the soundbar and subwoofer.
  • Use the model’s instructions to re-link or re-pair them.
  • Test another source and sound mode.
  • Remember that dialogue-heavy scenes and some audio formats contain little bass.

A silent subwoofer does not automatically indicate failure. If the bar works but the subwoofer remains silent across multiple sources after model-specific pairing, check Sony support for the exact model and repair options.

If rear speakers are silent

  • Confirm the rear speakers and wireless amplifier are powered.
  • Check wireless-link indicators.
  • Verify the rear speakers are compatible with the exact soundbar model.
  • Test surround content instead of a two-channel source.
  • Check sound mode and speaker-level settings.
  • Update firmware, then re-link the speakers using the model manual.

Rear speakers are not expected to produce constant sound from every source. Sony notes that output depends on the audio format and sound mode. Stereo music or dialogue-heavy content may provide little or no rear-channel activity. See Sony’s soundbar usage guidance.

If sound skips, cuts out, or is distorted

  1. Reseat HDMI, optical, and power connections.
  2. Try a different cable.
  3. Test another source.
  4. Disconnect other HDMI devices temporarily.
  5. Set TV digital audio output to PCM.
  6. Move Bluetooth devices, the subwoofer, and rear speakers closer during testing.
  7. Power-reset the system.
  8. Update the TV and soundbar software.
  9. Reset only after recording settings.

Possible causes include damaged cables, wireless interference, unsupported audio formats, HDMI-CEC conflicts, software mismatches, or hardware failure. Sony discusses abnormal sound, cable connections, processing delays, wireless speakers, and audio-format limitations in its troubleshooting information.

If the soundbar will not turn on or off with the TV

This is usually an HDMI-CEC problem. Check that:

  • BRAVIA Sync or HDMI-CEC is enabled on the TV.
  • Control for HDMI is enabled on the soundbar.
  • The soundbar uses the TV’s ARC/eARC connection.
  • The TV is set to use the audio system.
  • The correct HDMI input is selected.
  • Other HDMI devices are not disrupting CEC.

Some Sony models use a model-specific shortcut involving the VOICE button held for five seconds. On those models, the USB indicator flashes twice when Control for HDMI is enabled and once when disabled. Do not assume this shortcut applies to every Sony soundbar; check the manual for your model. Sony documents this behavior in its Control for HDMI guidance.

Update the TV, soundbar, and wireless speakers

Check for firmware updates for the TV, soundbar, subwoofer, and rear-speaker system where applicable. Updates can improve performance or add functions, but installation steps are model-specific. Use Sony’s model support page for manuals, downloads, and instructions.

If the problem began immediately after an update, perform a full power reset, recheck ARC/CEC settings, run the TV’s device detection again, and test another cable. Avoid a factory reset until you have checked update-specific guidance for the model.

Reset a Sony soundbar safely

A factory reset is a late-stage troubleshooting step, not the first thing to try. It can erase or change volume, input selection, sound settings, pairing information, personal information, and app or device registration.

Reset combinations differ substantially between models. Locate the model number on the bottom or rear of the soundbar, its packaging, the connected-device information, or the setup app. Then use Sony’s model-specific reset library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, Sony instructs owners of the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 5/HT-B500 family to hold the bar’s power button for more than 10 seconds until the reset notification sound is heard. That procedure must not be copied to an HT-S100F, HT-S200F, HT-S400, HT-A5000, or another model. Subwoofers may have a separate reset and linking procedure.

A power reset normally restarts the connection state without deliberately erasing settings. A factory reset returns the unit to its initial state and may require pairing and app registration again.

When the fault is probably hardware

Contact Sony support or a qualified repair service when:

  • The unit has no power or indicator after outlet and cord tests.
  • It repeatedly shuts down, overheats, smells burned, or shows physical or liquid damage.
  • One speaker channel remains dead across several sources and after the correct reset.
  • HDMI, optical, and Bluetooth all fail despite correct settings and known-good cables.
  • Wireless speakers cannot link after the model-specific re-pairing procedure.
  • A persistent error code remains after following the manual.

Do not buy a replacement soundbar before testing the cable, input, TV output, and HDMI-CEC settings. Many failures are connection or configuration problems rather than a failed speaker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick decision tree

Symptom Most useful next step
No lights or response Test outlet and cord, disconnect external cables, then seek repair if still dead.
Lights on but no sound from any source Check input, mute, volume, power-reset, update, then model-specific reset.
Bluetooth works but TV audio does not Troubleshoot TV output, ARC/optical ports, cable, and audio format.
Optical works but ARC does not Check ARC ports, HDMI-CEC, cable, device detection, and other HDMI devices.
Bar works but subwoofer or rears do not Check power, wireless link, compatibility, sound mode, and source format.
Only one app or source fails Check that source’s audio format and output settings before resetting the soundbar.

Use the exact Sony model instructions

Sony’s support library provides manuals, help guides, downloads, questions and answers, and repair information. Search by the model number printed on the soundbar rather than relying on a generic button combination. Not every Sony soundbar supports the BRAVIA Connect or Home Entertainment Connect app; consult Sony’s current compatibility list.
