This project puts three battery-powered LED strands in a mason jar and uses a microcontroller to fade them in sequence. It is a soldered electronics build—not simply a matter of placing battery fairy lights in a jar. If you want a straightforward decorative glow without programming or circuit assembly, a battery-powered strand or LED tealight is the simpler option.
What the programmable jar light does
Make: describes its build as an Arduino variant of a firefly-light project. Three LED strands—red, white and blue—sit inside a glass jar. A microcontroller fades each strand in sequence, then repeats the cycle. The controller-driven effect is the reason this version has more parts and wiring than a basic jar light.
The project removes the strands’ original battery units because the microcontroller assembly drives the lights instead. Its tutorial shows the strand wiring connected to a switch and battery contacts. The listed components form a specific design; the tutorial does not establish that arbitrary strands, batteries or controllers can be swapped in without checking electrical compatibility. Parts and tools in the Make: build
- Adafruit Pro Trinket 3V board
- LiIon/LiPoly backpack module and a 3.7V, 500mAh lithium-ion polymer battery
- SPST toggle switch and USB cable
- Three battery-powered LED wire strands
- Short lengths of 22- or 24-gauge stranded wire
- Mason jar
- Heat-shrink tubing
- Soldering iron and solder
- Wire cutters, wire stripper and other assembly supplies
The battery capacity, wire gauge and board are components named in Make:’s materials list, not evidence of a particular runtime, brightness or safety rating. Use the project’s listed design as a whole unless you have verified that any replacement parts are electrically compatible.

Soldering details to watch
Prepare coated wire carefully
Some fairy-light strands use extremely thin copper leads covered in resin, which can make soldering difficult. Adafruit’s related fairy-light lamp guide suggests scraping the coating away with a utility knife before soldering. That tip applies to the wire described in that guide; check the instructions for your actual strand and handle a blade cautiously. Read Adafruit’s fairy-light lamp guide.
Test before insulating the joint
Solarbotics’ jar-light guide advises checking that the lights work and confirming battery polarity before covering the soldered connection with heat-shrink tubing or tape. Following that order makes a wiring mistake easier to find before the joint is insulated. It is a practical project tip, not a comprehensive electrical safety standard. A craft tutorial suggests using an AA-battery fairy-light strand or a battery LED tealight for a simpler jar decoration. Those alternatives are not shown to be interchangeable with the programmable build’s board, battery or wiring. The available project information does not establish a safety certification, temperature test or standards-based safety conclusion for the programmable jar. Do not assume that any light strand is safe to enclose just because it fits inside glass. Use low-voltage components within their stated ratings, and follow the instructions supplied with the specific battery, light strand and soldering equipment you use.
