Many solar panels produce normally with periodic inspection and rainfall. Cleaning becomes worthwhile when persistent dust, pollen, bird droppings, salt, soot, sap, mud, or mineral deposits measurably reduce production and the value of recovered electricity exceeds the cleaning cost and safety risk.
What “dirty” means for solar panels
Solar professionals generally call surface buildup soiling. It includes dust, pollen, agricultural and construction particles, bird droppings, diesel soot, industrial residue, salt spray, mud, sap, and biological debris.

Soiling reduces the sunlight reaching the photovoltaic cells by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering it. The effect is not uniform: a light layer of loose dust may have little financial impact, while a concentrated patch of bird dropping or hardened mineral residue can obstruct part of a module much more severely.
Cleaning may increase electricity production by restoring light transmission. It does not improve the panel’s rated conversion efficiency or upgrade the equipment.

Does rain clean solar panels?
Rain helps, but it is not a guaranteed cleaning system. Heavy rain can remove loose dust, particularly from panels with enough tilt for water to run off. Light rain may leave spots, spread dust into a film, or cause particles to adhere to the glass.
Pollen is an important exception. In an NREL study of five utility-scale sites in North Carolina, regular rainfall did not prevent persistent pollen-related losses. Peak losses reached as much as 15%, annual losses were approximately 10% without planned cleaning, and mechanical wet-brush cleaning increased measured performance by 5%–11% at those sites. Those results describe pollen-heavy utility-scale locations—not a guaranteed result for a suburban rooftop.
The practical answer depends on the contaminant, rainfall intensity, panel angle, local climate, and how long the residue has been present. Rain may be sufficient for loose dust but ineffective against pollen film, sap, cemented dust, salt, or dried bird droppings.

How much energy can dirt cost?
There is no universal percentage. NREL’s U.S. soiling map uses an insolation-weighted soiling ratio. A ratio of 0.95 represents a 5% annual energy loss from soiling, but measurements vary substantially between locations. The map includes data from 255 U.S. sites; it should be used as evidence of geographic variation, not as a prediction for every home.
NREL materials describe annual soiling losses of up to approximately 6% in some situations, with older material reporting losses of approximately 7% in parts of the United States and much higher losses under particular worldwide conditions. These figures are examples and ranges, not expected losses for all systems.
For a location-specific reference, see NREL’s soiling map. Local production data is usually more useful than a generic national percentage.
When solar panel cleaning is most likely worthwhile
- Dry, dusty climates: Desert and semi-arid areas can accumulate dust quickly, especially when rain is infrequent.
- Agricultural sites: Plowing, harvesting, unpaved roads, and dry soil can create recurring deposits.
- Construction areas: Cement, drywall, soil, and road dust may settle on panels and become difficult to remove after moisture and drying.
- Pollen-heavy locations: Rain may not remove the film left by pollen.
- Bird activity: Droppings can create concentrated obstructions even when the rest of the array looks clean. Nesting may also create maintenance and wiring risks.
- Low-slope installations: Panels with little tilt tend to retain water, leaves, and debris longer than steeper arrays.
- Coastal or industrial environments: Salt, exhaust, oily residue, and airborne pollution may require more frequent inspection.
- Sticky or hardened residue: Sap, mud, ash, and mineral deposits are less likely to disappear with ordinary rainfall.
- A measured production decline: Persistent underperformance that matches visible soiling is stronger evidence than a calendar reminder.
NREL has described how dew and mineral deposits can contribute to “cementation,” making dust harder for rain alone to remove. In these conditions, a test cleaning can be more informative than automatically signing up for recurring service.
When routine cleaning is often unnecessary
Cleaning is less likely to pay off when the array is visibly clean, the system is in a rainy low-dust location, and production is tracking a credible seasonal baseline. A sufficiently steep roof may shed water and debris effectively, although no angle guarantees that cleaning will never be needed.
Routine professional cleaning may also be poor value when the system is small, roof access is dangerous, the quote is high, or rain is expected to remove the buildup shortly afterward. NREL has published historical examples of cleaning costs ranging from approximately $0.25 per square metre for large systems to $1 per square metre for a single residential system. These are study figures, not current market averages.
How to tell whether dirt is reducing output
Start with inspection and monitoring rather than assuming that every production problem is a cleaning problem.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Inspect from the ground. Look for persistent film, streaks, bird droppings, leaves, nests, pollen, salt deposits, or construction residue.
- Review monitoring data. Compare current production with similar sunny periods from previous weeks or years, allowing for season, temperature, shading, and weather.
- Check whether the decline is array-wide. Uniform reduction is more consistent with weather or soiling; one string, optimizer, or module performing poorly may indicate an electrical or equipment fault.
- Use a controlled comparison. Record several comparable sunny days before cleaning, clean only if it is safe and permitted by the manufacturer, then compare several comparable days afterward.
- Normalize the result where possible. Irradiance, temperature, shading, inverter behavior, grid conditions, and battery operation can all affect output.
A one-day improvement is not proof. Look for a sustained difference under comparable conditions.

For commercial systems, a soiling sensor can compare a clean reference cell with a soiled reference cell and estimate the production penalty. Products such as Fracsun’s soiling-monitoring systems provide measurement, alerts, wash forecasting, and data access. This is generally excessive for a typical home array but can be useful for agricultural, commercial, or utility-scale sites.
How to clean solar panels safely
Safety comes first. Do not climb onto a roof or walk on modules unless you are properly equipped and trained. Treat the system as energized even when a disconnect is switched off. Use a qualified professional for steep, high, fragile, obstructed, or difficult-to-reach arrays.
Before using soap, brushes, detergents, or specialized equipment, check the module manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and warranty requirements. NREL guidance generally favors plain water and, where necessary, mild soap. It advises against hard brushes, abrasives, solvents, harsh detergents, and high-pressure water.
Basic method for a safe, ground-accessible array
- Inspect the array from the ground and identify cracked glass, damaged wiring, loose connectors, or exposed components.
- Choose a cool, overcast period or early morning when the modules are not hot. Avoid thermal shock from applying cold water to very hot glass.
- Rinse loose dust with plain water.
- If residue remains, use a soft sponge, microfiber tool, or other manufacturer-approved soft implement.
- Use only a mild, non-abrasive soap if the manufacturer permits it.
- Rinse thoroughly so detergent does not dry into a film.
- Allow the modules to dry or use a soft, non-abrasive squeegee designed for glass.
- Stop if you find cracks, damaged seals, loose wiring, or pest activity, and contact the installer or a qualified solar technician.
Do not make a pressure washer, razor blade, abrasive pad, stiff brush, household glass cleaner, or harsh chemical the default solution. Hard water can leave mineral spots; professional cleaners may use purified or deionized water, but most homeowners do not need a deionization system for occasional, safe maintenance.
How often should panels be cleaned?
Use a condition-based schedule rather than “once” or “twice” per year for every system.
- Rainy, low-dust region: Inspect periodically and clean only when persistent residue remains or monitoring shows a meaningful decline.
- Pollen season: Inspect after peak pollen events and after rain; do not assume rainfall removed the residue.
- Dry or dusty region: Inspect more often and consider seasonal or output-triggered cleaning.
- Agricultural or construction setting: Inspect after dust-generating work, harvesting, grading, or nearby construction activity.
- Bird-heavy site: Inspect frequently and address nesting or concentrated droppings.
- Commercial or utility-scale array: Use production analytics or a soiling sensor where the recovered energy can justify the equipment.
Cleaning frequency depends on cleaning cost, accumulation rate, solar resource, electricity value, module characteristics, rainfall, and the effect of soiling over time.
DIY cleaning versus professional service
DIY cleaning
DIY cleaning has the lowest direct cost and may be reasonable for a ground-accessible array. Water-fed telescoping poles are available from retail suppliers; example listings have shown approximately $85.05 for a 12-foot kit and $113.99 for a 24-foot kit. Prices and availability change, and a product listing’s “soft bristles” description is not independent proof that the tool is safe for every module coating.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →DIY is a poor choice if it encourages roof climbing, directs water toward electrical equipment, requires aggressive scrubbing, or cannot provide a clean final rinse.
Professional cleaning
Professional service is safer for high or steep roofs and may include a useful visual inspection. It does not automatically include a qualified electrical inspection, roof inspection, or repair, so ask exactly what the contractor will do.
As one current service example, Palmetto lists panel-cleaning service starting at approximately $300 and estimates two to four hours, while noting that the actual price varies by location, condition, property, and building type. Treat that as a provider-specific starting signal, not a national average.
Commercial equipment and robotic cleaning
Professional equipment such as Kärcher’s iSolar systems is aimed at cleaning operators and larger or difficult-to-access arrays. Water-free robotic systems such as Ecoppia are primarily utility-scale solutions, not realistic purchases for most homeowners.

Expected annual value recovered = expected annual kWh recovered × value per kWh
Compare that value with the cleaning price, DIY equipment, water and detergent, travel or service charges, access risk, possible damage, and the chance that upcoming rain will remove the residue.
Illustrative example
Suppose a system produces 10,000 kWh per year, cleaning is expected to recover 5%, and the electricity is worth $0.20 per kWh:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Recovered energy:
10,000 × 0.05 = 500 kWh - Recovered value:
500 × $0.20 = $100
A $300 cleaning would not pay for itself in one year under those assumptions. A $75 cleaning might be reasonable, particularly if it includes a valuable inspection. Replace the assumptions with your own production, electricity rate, export compensation, and realistic recovery estimate.
The value of a recovered kilowatt-hour differs depending on whether it is self-consumed, exported under net metering, paid at a lower export rate, stored in a battery, subject to an export cap, or used by a commercial facility with demand charges or a power-purchase agreement.
What if cleaning does not improve production?
Do not keep washing the panels in response to an unexplained output decline. Check:
- Inverter warnings, shutdowns, or error codes
- Monitoring and communications failures
- New shade from trees, construction, or equipment
- Grid outages or voltage problems
- Loose wiring, damaged connectors, or failed optimizers
- Cracked modules, damaged seals, or water intrusion
- Weather and temperature differences between comparison periods
A sudden production drop is especially unlikely to be explained by ordinary dust alone. If output falls sharply after cleaning, stop and arrange an evaluation. Possible causes include residue or streaking, physical damage, water entering already-damaged equipment, a tripped disconnect, a coincidental weather change, or a pre-existing electrical fault.
Special cases
Snow and ice
Snow removal is a separate issue from ordinary panel cleaning. Do not scrape modules with a shovel or other hard tool. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s guidance and avoid unsafe roof access. DOE/NREL maintenance guidance discusses snow shedding and cautions against inappropriate mechanical removal.
Bird droppings
A small concentrated deposit can obstruct part of a module even when the rest of the array looks clean. It may also create localized heating under some conditions, but that is not an automatic result of every dropping. Address nests and pest activity separately from surface cleaning.
Hard or cemented dust
Dust mixed with moisture or mineral deposits can become difficult for rain to remove. Aggressive scrubbing can damage glass or coatings, so persistent residue is a reason to use an appropriate professional method rather than more force.
Final verdict
Solar panels generally require low routine maintenance, but “maintenance-free” is too broad. Inspect and monitor first; clean when persistent soiling is present and the expected recovered electricity, inspection value, or safety benefit justifies the cost and risk. Rain may be enough for loose dust in a wet, low-soiling location, while pollen, construction dust, salt, bird droppings, sap, and hardened mineral deposits often require a more deliberate response.
Recommended Free Tools
Cleaning is only one part of solar maintenance. It does not replace inverter checks, electrical inspections, shade management, roof maintenance, pest control, or warranty service.
