Soil blocking starts seeds in firm, freestanding cubes of growing mix rather than individual pots or cell packs. You compress damp mix with a soil blocker, sow seeds in the small indentations it forms, and keep the blocks evenly moist as seedlings grow. It can reduce reliance on plastic containers, but it takes the right moisture, careful handling, and some practice.

What is soil blocking?

A soil block is a compressed cube of growing medium that serves as both the seed’s container and its growing space. A handheld soil blocker shapes and ejects the cubes, often leaving a shallow indentation for sowing. Because the blocks stand on their own, they need a stable tray for support and watering.

One practical appeal is using fewer individual pots or cell packs. University of Maryland Extension notes that some gardeners and small-scale commercial growers use blockers to produce transplants with less or no plastic. The blocks also expose their sides to air: extension sources describe roots reaching an edge as being air-pruned rather than continuing to circle inside a pot. These are practical benefits and an explanation of the method, not proof of improved yields or guaranteed transplant success.

What you need to make soil blocks

  • A soil blocker: The central tool compresses the mix and forms one or more blocks per press.
  • A cohesive seed-starting mix: It must hold together when ejected without sticking excessively to the tool.
  • A stable tray: Blocks need a level surface; a tray that holds water is useful for bottom-watering.
  • Seeds, labels, and light: Label varieties and sowing dates as you plant, and prepare a bright growing location for seedlings.

You can prepare mix at home and repurpose a suitable tray, though a blocker, mix, and tray are the basic setup. Illinois Extension notes that buying or assembling the equipment and learning to get the mix right are part of the trade-off.

Choose a block size for your seeds and setup

Block size depends on seed size, how much room you have under lights or on a heat mat, and whether you plan to pot seedlings up as they grow.

Block size or tool feature When it can fit What to consider
Mini-block, about ½ inch Cornell describes mini-blocks for tiny or slow-germinating seeds. Seedlings can be moved into larger blocks or containers as they grow.
Standard block, about 2 inches Cornell describes this size as broadly useful for many other seeds. Allow room between blocks so the sides can dry and receive airflow.
Blocks formed per press Tool models vary: University of Maryland Extension describes a tool that makes five 2-inch cubes per press, while UC Cooperative Extension describes a common four-block 2-inch maker. Check the tool’s dimensions and output, and whether inserts allow seedlings to be potted up.

There is no single best blocker for every gardener. Compare the block dimensions and number formed per press with the space you have and how long seedlings will stay in each size. Ease of cleaning is another useful practical consideration.

How to make and sow soil blocks

  1. Moisten the mix. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach suggests starting with three parts mix to one part warm water. The target is wetter than typical tray mix: it should hold together firmly without dripping. Treat the ratio as a starting point because recipes and ingredients absorb water differently.
  2. Test the consistency. If blocks crumble, the mix is too dry; if it sticks to the tool, it may be too wet. Adjust gradually until it holds its shape when compressed and released.
  3. Fill the blocker firmly. Press the tool into the mix so its cavities are packed, then scrape the bottom flat. Eject the blocks onto a stable tray.
  4. Sow at the right depth. Place seeds in the formed indentations and follow the crop’s sowing directions. Some seeds should be covered; others need light and should remain uncovered.
  5. Label immediately. Mark each variety and sowing date so labels do not get separated from the blocks.

Choose a mix that holds together

There is no single mandatory soil-block recipe. The mix needs to bind into a firm cube while retaining moisture, and recipes differ in their ingredients and proportions.

One UC Cooperative Extension example uses equal parts peat moss or coir, perlite or vermiculite, and compost. The same source also provides a larger recipe involving lime, fertilizer, garden soil, and compost. Johnny’s Selected Seeds’ 2016 instruction manual reproduces a recipe attributed to Eliot Coleman’s The New Organic Grower. These are examples to adapt, not interchangeable guarantees: ingredient choice affects how much water the mix needs and how well it holds together.

Water blocks without eroding them

Bottom-watering helps avoid washing mix out of the cubes. Add water to a solid tray, or set a permeable tray in shallow water and let the blocks wick it up. Remove excess water after they have absorbed enough. Keep blocks evenly moist, not saturated; Iowa State cautions against leaving them in water for a prolonged period.

Once seedlings emerge, provide consistent, strong light. Iowa State recommends 12–16 hours per day to help prevent leggy growth; this is that extension source’s care guidance, not a universal experimental threshold. Leave space between blocks so their sides can dry and roots can encounter air at the edges.

What soil blocking can—and cannot—offer

Soil blocks can reduce the need for individual plastic pots or cell packs during the seedling stage. The exposed block edges are intended to air-prune roots, helping avoid the circling that can occur in a pot. Neither point establishes that soil-blocked plants will produce higher yields or always transplant more successfully; the extension guidance cited here describes the method and its rationale rather than a controlled comparison demonstrating those outcomes.

The method also asks for more attention than simply filling cells: you need to get the mix’s moisture and cohesion right, handle blocks carefully, and monitor watering. A blocker, mix, and tray are startup needs, although a repurposed tray can keep extra purchases down for a small batch. For a larger growing setup, the time needed to learn and make blocks is part of the decision.
