For a persistent CO₂ leak sound or a fault these checks do not resolve, stop troubleshooting and contact SodaStream support; do not open the machine or improvise an internal repair.
Start with the bottle and water
- Confirm the bottle is compatible with your exact machine. A bottle that does not fit the model can interfere with carbonation. SodaStream’s carbonation and water-leak guidance and related model guidance advise checking bottle compatibility and setup.
- Fill to the marked line. Do not overfill. For the machines shown in those support instructions, a correctly inserted bottle leaves a gap between the bottle and the machine base. Treat that as a model-specific cue, not a universal rule for every SodaStream.
- Carbonate plain water first. SodaStream’s instruction is: “Always fizz water before adding any flavor!” Add flavor only after carbonation; adding it beforehand can contribute to overflow.
Identify and check the CO₂ cylinder
SodaStream machines use different cylinder connections. Determine whether your machine takes a Quick Connect cylinder or a screw-in cylinder before you buy, exchange, or install one. The systems are not interchangeable; match the connector to the exact machine rather than relying on the cylinder’s appearance or brand.
Quick Connect cylinder
Place the cylinder in its holder and lower the handle to secure it. Follow the machine’s instructions for your model. SodaStream’s cylinder troubleshooting and replacement guidance covers checking installation and possible depletion.
Screw-in cylinder
Turn the cylinder by hand until it is held firmly in place. Do not use tools to tighten it. SodaStream’s replacement instructions specifically say not to use tools.

Check whether the cylinder may be empty
No bubbles can mean the cylinder is depleted, but first check that it is the correct type and installed properly. SodaStream suggests checking whether CO₂ enters the bottle, pressing the carbonation lever a few times to look for bubbles, and listening for sputtering. If there are still no bubbles after correct installation, the cylinder may need replacing. Use an official or participating exchange route where available, and verify the replacement matches your machine’s connector.
What to do if you hear CO₂ leaking
If a release sound follows carbonation, keep the machine upright and wait for the gas release to stop before removing the bottle. If the sound continues, contact SodaStream support. If it begins after cylinder installation or during carbonation, check that the cylinder is compatible and correctly installed. - Weak fizz or overflow: verify bottle compatibility, fill line, insertion, and that you carbonated plain water before flavoring.
