If the alarm is sounding a full alarm, check for smoke, heat, or other signs of fire. If fire is possible, get everyone outside and call emergency services from outside. The U.S. Fire Administration says you could have less than two minutes to escape once a smoke alarm sounds. If there are no signs of fire and the sound is a brief, periodic chirp, identify the alarm’s pattern and work through the checks below. A chirp can signal a battery or compartment problem, a retained warning, contamination, a fault, or an alarm that has reached end of life; the exact meaning depends on the model.
First, tell a full alarm from a periodic chirp
A continuous or repeating full-alarm pattern is a warning to treat seriously, not a battery troubleshooting prompt. If you suspect fire, leave immediately and call emergency services from outside. Do not remove the battery or disable the alarm to stop it.

If the alarm was triggered by cooking or a steamy shower and you have confirmed there is no fire, the U.S. Fire Administration advises opening a door or window, pressing the hush button, or waving a towel to clear the air. Do not remove the battery; follow the alarm’s manual for its hush feature.
A short chirp at intervals is different from a full alarm. Note the interval, any voice announcement, and the LED color or blink pattern, then compare them with the exact model’s manual. Kidde, for example, says a chirp every 30–40 seconds can indicate low battery on some models; that interval is not a universal code. Other patterns can indicate hush mode, a malfunction, end of life, or wireless interference. On interconnected systems, use the manual to identify which alarm initiated the alert. Check nearby devices too: another appliance or wireless system can make a similar sound.

- Test/silence button for efficient testing to ensure alarm is working properly
Check the replacement battery and its compartment
For an alarm designed to take a replaceable battery, verify the required size and type in the manual. Use a fresh battery, align its polarity, seat it fully, and close the compartment completely. A loose or incorrectly installed battery can cause intermittent chirping even when the cell is new.
Alarm power designs vary: some use disposable 9-volt batteries, some have nonreplaceable 10-year lithium batteries, and hardwired alarms usually have a backup battery, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Do not try to replace a sealed battery. If the alarm is hardwired, follow its manual for any power-isolation steps; do not disconnect wiring or leave the alarm disabled to silence a chirp.

Reset the alarm only as its manufacturer directs
Some alarms may continue signaling after battery replacement and need a model-specific reset. The procedures and timings differ, so use the instructions for your exact unit rather than treating one timing as universal.
- First Alert’s reset guidance suggests removing the battery and holding the test button for 15–30 seconds before reinstalling the battery and testing the alarm. This instruction is from its guidance dated September 5, 2025.
- Kidde advises holding the test button for at least 15 seconds for certain intermittent-chirp cases; it is not a universal instruction for every Kidde model.
- For Clipsal model 755PSMA4, Schneider Electric specifies a 20-second test-button hold in its guidance dated October 22, 2025.
Consult the model manual before removing a battery or resetting a hardwired alarm. The relevant manufacturer guidance includes First Alert’s steps for chirping after battery replacement, Kidde’s intermittent-chirp guidance, and Schneider Electric / Clipsal’s instructions for the 755PSMA4.

Clean the alarm if the manual permits it, then test
Dust or insects in the sensing chamber can contribute to chirping. Kidde notes that dust accumulation in the chamber can cause a unit to chirp. Clean the alarm only by the method approved in its manual; manufacturers may recommend vacuuming or cleaning the exterior. Do not assume a method or cleaning product is safe for every model.
After cleaning and any model-approved reset, press the test button as directed. If the alarm fails its test or continues to indicate a fault, contact the manufacturer or replace the unit as its manual instructs. Keep a working alarm in place while troubleshooting rather than disabling it.

Check the alarm’s age and end-of-life signal
Find the manufacture date on the label on the back of the alarm. The U.S. Fire Administration says smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years from that date. A new battery does not extend the alarm’s service life, and an end-of-life chirp will not be fixed by another battery. Follow the specific unit’s manual and applicable local requirements.

If the chirp persists after the correct battery, model-specific reset, approved cleaning, and a successful test, the alarm may have a fault or a wiring issue. Contact the manufacturer for model-specific guidance. For hardwired installation or unresolved wiring concerns, use a qualified electrician; the U.S. Fire Administration says hardwired alarms should be installed only by qualified electricians.

When replacing an alarm, first confirm that the replacement suits the existing wiring and mounting and meets local requirements. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends both ionization and photoelectric coverage or a dual-sensor alarm, as well as interconnected alarms so that when one sounds, they all sound. Check the local rules for your city, county, or state before choosing or installing a replacement.
