Choose a traditional deadbolt when dependable key operation, minimal maintenance, and no connectivity dependency matter more. Neither category is automatically more secure. The meaningful comparison is the exact lock’s tested rating, its fit on your door, the quality of installation, and what happens when power, Wi-Fi, or a credential fails.
What you are actually comparing
A smart lock is a deadbolt or lockset with electronic controls layered onto the physical locking mechanism. Depending on the model, those controls can include a keypad, a phone app, Wi-Fi or another wireless connection, temporary codes, activity notifications, or integration with a broader home system. “Smart lock” is therefore a feature category, not a single design or security grade.

A traditional deadbolt is operated mechanically—normally with a key from outside and a thumb turn from inside, although the exact arrangement varies by product. It has no app or network account to maintain. Both types are legitimate residential choices; the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) addresses conventional deadbolt combinations as well as smart and electronic locks in its consumer guidance.
The right choice depends on the door and the people using it. Start with the physical opening and required access methods, then evaluate certification, failure behavior, and installation. Treat connected features as convenience and access management, not as proof of stronger forced-entry resistance.

Smart lock or traditional deadbolt: the decision at a glance
| Decision factor | Smart deadbolt | Traditional deadbolt | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| How people enter | May support a keypad, app, and other model-specific credentials in addition to a key or mechanical override. | Usually a physical key outside and a thumb turn inside, subject to the model’s design. | List every user, guest, caregiver, tenant, and emergency contact. Decide whether each needs a key, a code, an app, or remote management. |
| Power and connectivity | Battery life, low-battery warnings, local operation, app behavior, and remote functions differ by model. Wi-Fi or another network may be needed for some features. | Ordinary key operation does not require batteries, an app, or a network. | Read the product instructions for dead batteries, lost Wi-Fi, phone loss, account recovery, and backup entry. |
| Physical security evidence | The electronic feature does not establish a security grade. Assess the deadbolt and its certification for the exact model. | Assess the deadbolt and its certification for the exact model. | Look for the applicable BHMA certification and security, durability, and finish ratings. |
| Door fit | May impose requirements for door thickness, backset, bore, interior clearance, and exterior space for the keypad or escutcheon. | Also depends on door preparation, thickness, backset, bore, and clearance. | Measure the existing door and compare every dimension with the manufacturer’s specifications and installation guide. |
| Sharing access | Codes or app permissions can be useful for scheduled or temporary access when the model supports them. | Sharing normally means issuing, collecting, or rekeying physical keys. | Decide who will administer credentials and what happens when a guest or employee should no longer enter. |
| Maintenance | Requires battery checks and, for connected features, account and software upkeep. | Requires ordinary mechanical inspection, lubrication only as permitted by the manufacturer, and key management. | Put the required checks on a household or property-maintenance schedule. |
Security: compare evidence, not the word “smart”
There is no established universal security winner between smart and mechanical deadbolts. The available guidance supports selection criteria, not a controlled test showing that one category prevents more break-ins. A connected keypad can make entry more convenient without changing the strength of the bolt, strike, frame, or screws. Conversely, a mechanical lock’s lack of electronics does not by itself prove superior resistance to attack.
BHMA explains that residential hardware should be selected for the particular door and evaluated for security, durability, and finish. Its residential standards include A156.39 for residential locksets and latches and A156.40 for residential deadbolts. Certified products are tested against the applicable standard; the label is useful evidence, but it is not a promise of a particular break-in outcome.
BHMA uses performance levels A, B, and C for certified residential hardware. Compare the rating for the exact lock and the relevant standard rather than assuming that every product carrying a similar marketing description has the same result. The organization’s consumer guidance puts the point plainly: “When it comes to door hardware, it’s not ‘one size fits all.’” See BHMA’s rating-selection guidance for the certification framework.

What a useful security check includes
- Confirm that the listed certification applies to the complete lock model, not merely to a separate trim or an unrelated product family.
- Record the security, durability, and finish ratings and the standard used, such as A156.40 for a residential deadbolt.
- Inspect the door frame, strike, hinges, and surrounding material. A highly rated deadbolt cannot compensate for a damaged frame or a poorly secured strike.
- Use the manufacturer’s installation hardware and screw lengths for your door construction; do not substitute parts without confirming compatibility.
- For a smart lock, include the mechanical override and electronic attack surface in your risk assessment. The app feature is an additional system to manage, not a replacement for sound physical hardware.
Measure the door before selecting either type
Fit is a prerequisite for security and reliable operation. BHMA identifies door thickness and backset—the distance from the door edge to the center of the lock bore—as key measurements. Also check the bore size and position, edge preparation, frame alignment, and the room available for the interior and exterior hardware. Many BHMA products adjust to common preparations, but “adjustable” does not mean universally compatible.

Measurements to record
- Door thickness: Measure the slab itself, excluding weather-stripping or decorative layers. Measure more than one point if the door is warped or has cladding.
- Backset: Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing lock hole. Record the available setting rather than relying on the appearance of the old latch.
- Bore and edge preparation: Note the diameter and location of the face bore and the shape of the edge recess. A replacement may require a different preparation or an adapter.
- Clearance: Check the interior swing, nearby windows, storm doors, trim, and handle spacing. Smart escutcheons and keypads can need more surface area than a conventional cylinder.
- Frame and strike: Check that the bolt can extend fully into the strike without binding and that the frame is sound enough for the supplied fasteners.
As a concrete, model-specific example, the manufacturer’s listed specifications for the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt cover doors from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick and backsets of 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches. Those dimensions are not a universal smart-lock standard. Verify the exact model’s current specification and installation guide before ordering; a different trim, retrofit, or door preparation may have different limits.
Access methods: match the lock to the household
When a smart deadbolt earns its complexity
A smart model is most useful when the access problem is more complicated than “everyone has a key.” A keypad can let a family member enter without carrying a key. A supported app can make it possible to manage permissions, and a temporary credential can help with a scheduled visitor or service appointment. These are model-specific capabilities: confirm whether the lock supports permanent codes, temporary codes, schedules, audit history, remote control, or only local operation.
Define an access policy before installation. Decide who can create or revoke credentials, how many administrators exist, and how a code is removed when a relationship or job ends. Avoid writing a code on the door or sharing a single household credential when the lock supports individual users. If the model has activity records, decide who can view them and how long they are retained.

When a mechanical deadbolt is the better fit
A traditional deadbolt is often the simpler choice for a household that already manages keys well, wants no account or app, or cannot tolerate battery-related tasks. It also avoids a network outage affecting ordinary entry. A physical key can still be lost, copied, or forgotten, so key control and rekeying remain part of the security plan.

Mechanical operation can be especially practical for a door used by people who do not use smartphones, for a property where internet service is intermittent, or for an owner who wants the fewest moving parts beyond the lock itself. That simplicity is a maintenance advantage, not evidence that every mechanical product is stronger.
Failure planning: batteries, Wi-Fi, and the backup key
Read the failure instructions before buying a smart lock. Distinguish among a dead battery, a failed home network, a cloud-service interruption, a lost phone, and an account problem. They can have different remedies. Some battery-powered locks continue to permit local keypad or mechanical entry when the network is unavailable, while remote functions may stop. Other behavior is model-specific and must be confirmed in the manual.
For the cited Schlage Encode product family, the manufacturer states that the lock uses four included AA batteries, provides a low-battery indicator, includes a physical backup key, and offers up to six months of battery life under typical use. Those are manufacturer-stated specifications for that product family, not an independent endurance test or a promise for all smart locks. Usage, temperature, connectivity, and battery condition can affect actual service life.
Build a practical smart-lock outage plan
- Keep the physical backup key outside the locked home in a secure, controlled location—not hidden in an obvious spot and not attached to the lock.
- Know the manufacturer’s emergency power procedure, if one exists, and keep the required battery type available.
- Turn on low-battery notifications where supported, then add a calendar check so an alert is not your only reminder.
- Test local entry with the internet connection unavailable. Confirm whether the keypad, Bluetooth path, or mechanical key still works.
- Document account recovery and administrator contacts. A phone upgrade or lost device should not strand the household.
A traditional deadbolt has a different failure profile: no battery or network outage blocks the normal key path, but a damaged key, frozen cylinder, misaligned door, or lost key can still prevent entry. Maintain a spare-key and rekeying plan appropriate to the property.

Installation: a reliable process for either choice
Follow the exact manufacturer’s installation guide; the outline below is a planning sequence, not a substitute for the supplied instructions. If the door, frame, or existing bore is damaged or nonstandard, a qualified installer can prevent a fit problem from becoming a security problem.
Before removing the old lock
- Photograph the existing lock, latch, strike, and frame so you can restore the door if the replacement is incompatible.
- Record thickness, backset, bore, edge recess, and clearances. Compare them with the new lock’s published limits.
- Open and close the door with the old lock retracted. Correct sag, swelling, or frame movement before installing a new bolt.
- Read the complete instructions, including battery type, programming sequence, reset procedure, and emergency entry method for a smart model.
- Lay out the supplied screws, strike, latch, exterior assembly, interior assembly, keys, and batteries. Do not mix fasteners from another lock.
Installing a smart deadbolt
- Install or verify the latch orientation and backset setting so the bolt travels in the correct direction.
- Fit the exterior keypad or cylinder without pinching the cable. Route the cable exactly as shown so the interior assembly does not crush it.
- Secure the interior assembly and test the bolt with the door open. It should extend and retract smoothly without motor strain.
- Install the specified batteries, complete the lock’s handing or calibration routine, and set the administrator credential before adding other users.
- Connect the app or network only after local operation works. Test locking, unlocking, low-battery reporting, and the physical key.
- Close the door and repeat the tests from outside. Verify that the bolt enters the strike fully and that weather pressure or a lifted door does not cause binding.
Installing a traditional deadbolt
- Set the latch to the measured backset and install it with the bevel facing the strike as directed.
- Fit the keyed exterior and interior thumb-turn assemblies, keeping the tailpiece aligned with the latch.
- Install the strike with the supplied screws and confirm that the bolt seats completely without forcing the door.
- Operate the key and thumb turn several times with the door open, then test again with the door closed.
- Keep the spare key under controlled custody and record who has copies. If a key is lost or a user should no longer have access, rekey or replace the cylinder rather than relying on memory.
Physical security depends on the door assembly
The lock is only one part of an exterior-door system. Before upgrading, inspect the slab for splitting or soft material, the hinges for looseness, the frame for movement, and the strike area for damage. A bolt that barely enters a weak or misaligned strike cannot deliver the protection suggested by the lock’s label. Correct alignment so the bolt is not carrying the door’s weight during normal locking.
Use the exact strike and fasteners specified for the product and the door construction. If the frame has been repaired, shimmed, or modified, verify that the new installation still permits full bolt extension. On a smart lock, make sure the interior electronics do not interfere with the door, glass, security screen, or handle and that the keypad can be reached without exposing a user unnecessarily.

Compare the total ownership work instead of the purchase price alone:
- Smart deadbolt: batteries, app or account administration, firmware and network compatibility, credential management, and a tested backup-entry routine.
- Traditional deadbolt: key duplication or rekeying, occasional mechanical maintenance permitted by the manufacturer, and physical key control.
- Either type: correction of frame or door defects, installation labor when the preparation is nonstandard, and replacement when the hardware no longer operates smoothly.
Decision paths for common doors
Single-family front door with frequent visitors
Prefer a smart model if temporary or individual access is a real recurring need and an administrator will actively maintain credentials. Confirm local entry and backup-key procedures first. If visitors are occasional and a trusted person can manage a physical key, a certified traditional deadbolt may avoid unnecessary complexity.
Rental, guest, or service access
A smart lock can simplify changing access between occupants or appointments when its permissions are designed for that use. Confirm who owns the account and how access is transferred at move-out. A mechanical lock may be preferable where the owner wants a straightforward rekeying process and no dependence on a tenant’s phone or network.
Older door or unusual construction
Prioritize measurement and an on-site fit check. A retrofit that appears universal may still conflict with the door thickness, backset, bore, frame, or interior trim. Resolve the preparation before choosing electronics or finish.
Household with unreliable internet or limited smartphone use
Do not buy a connected model for features that cannot be used consistently. Select a smart lock only if its local keypad or mechanical path meets the household’s needs without the network, or choose a traditional deadbolt and manage keys deliberately.
Maintenance and troubleshooting
Smart lock will not lock smoothly
- Open the door and operate the bolt. If it works open but binds closed, inspect alignment between the bolt and strike before changing software settings.
- Check that the door is fully seated and that weather-stripping or seasonal swelling is not applying side pressure.
- Confirm the batteries are the type and orientation specified by the manufacturer.
- Do not repeatedly force the motor. Correct the mechanical cause, then recalibrate or reset only according to the instructions.
App cannot reach the lock
- Separate a local-entry problem from a remote-control problem by testing the keypad or physical key with the door open.
- Check whether the phone, home network, or manufacturer service is the failing link.
- Use the documented local procedure while remote access is unavailable, and keep account recovery information current.
Traditional key is difficult to turn
- Test with the door open to distinguish cylinder resistance from frame or strike pressure.
- Inspect alignment, loose hinges, and the strike before applying any lubricant; use only a product approved in the lock’s instructions.
- If a key is bent, worn, or copied poorly, replace it rather than forcing the cylinder.
Final buying checklist
- Have you measured door thickness, backset, bore, clearance, and the condition of the frame?
- Does the exact model list a certification and ratings under the applicable BHMA standard?
- Which people need access, and will they use a key, code, app, or a combination?
- For a smart lock, what works during a dead battery, lost Wi-Fi, lost phone, or account problem?
- Is there a controlled backup-entry method, and has it been tested?
- Who will remove old codes, collect keys, replace batteries, and handle rekeying?
- Will the replacement bolt fully enter a sound strike without forcing the door?
- Are you comparing current specifications for the exact model rather than assuming a category-wide feature or rating?
Bottom line
For a door that fits the product and a household that will manage batteries and credentials, a smart deadbolt is the better access-management tool. For straightforward, dependable key operation with no app or network dependency, a traditional deadbolt is usually the cleaner choice. In both cases, select the exact model using its BHMA evidence, verify the measurements, install the hardware correctly, and plan for the way the lock fails—not just the way it works on a normal day.
