Smart Door Lock With an ESP8266 WiFi Login Page and Arduino

An ESP-01 hosts a local WiFi login page and sends a submitted value to an Arduino Uno, which can pulse a solenoid when the value matches. The tutorial is a prototype, with important electrical, mechanical, and security limits.

This Arduino-and-ESP8266 project is a local-network learning prototype: an ESP-01 hosts a simple login page, sends a submitted value to an Arduino Uno, and the Arduino briefly drives a lock-style solenoid when that value matches a string in its code. It demonstrates how a browser interface can control a physical output, but the tutorial does not establish a secure, production-ready door access system.

How the WiFi door-lock project works

The design splits the work between two boards. The ESP-01 ESP8266 joins a WiFi network, serves a web page, and handles a request to the page’s /save route. The Arduino Uno R3 receives the submitted text over a serial connection, compares it with a hard-coded expected value, and pulses output 9 if the strings match. The tutorial identifies a solenoid as the lock actuator.

  1. Join the local WiFi network. Network credentials are set in the ESP8266 code. The module connects to a shared router and prints its local IP address.
  2. Open the login page. A phone or computer on the same reachable network visits that IP address in a browser. The tutorial suggests putting a QR code linking to the address near the door; the QR code is only a shortcut to the local page.
  3. Submit a value. The HTML page sends the entered value in an HTTP GET request. The ESP8266’s handler writes a nonempty value to serial.
  4. Compare and actuate. The Arduino reads serial data to a newline, checks the accumulated string against its programmed value, and briefly drives output 9 when they match.

The tutorial’s described access path is through the local WiFi network. It does not describe cloud access or unlocking from the public internet. Its prose mentions a servo inconsistently in one code introduction, but the project description and parts list specify a solenoid lock.

Parts named by the tutorial

Part or tool Role in the project
Arduino Uno R3 Receives the submitted value, compares it with the expected string, and controls the output.
ESP8266 WiFi module, specifically ESP-01 in the upload instructions Connects to WiFi and serves the login page. The tutorial’s Arduino IDE setup calls for selecting “Generic ESP8266 Module.”
TIP120 power Darlington transistor Named as a component in the lock-control build.
Lock-style solenoid The specified physical actuator.
USB-to-TTL converter Used to program the ESP-01.
Arduino IDE Used to prepare and upload the code.

These part names identify the tutorial’s general arrangement, not a verified bill of materials for a particular door. The source does not state the solenoid’s voltage, current, dimensions, duty cycle, power supply, or mechanical fit. Confirm the chosen lock’s specifications against the driver, supply, mounting arrangement, and door hardware before purchasing or building.

Hosyond 3Pcs ESP8266 ESP-12E CP2102 NodeMCU Lua Wireless Module Development Board for Arduino IDE/Micropython
  • Not only it is easy to program for this controller by using the CP2102-USB interface, but also unnecessary to press the flash and reset buttons before each flash operation.
  • NodeMcu is an open source Lua based firmware for the ESP8266, ultra low cost wireless modules, development boards for rapid prototyping, integrated with ESP8266 chips.
  • The ESP8266 has powerful on-board processing and storage capabilities, and can be integrated with sensors and other application-specific devices through its GPIOs.
  • It is compatible with Arduino IDE,works great with the latest Mongoose IoT/Micropython.
  • Modern Internet development tools can use the built-in API to instantly put your idea on the fast track.

What the example does—and does not—secure

The example keeps the WiFi credentials and expected password in source code. It sends the submitted value over HTTP on the local network, and the tutorial does not document HTTPS, hashed credential storage, rate limiting, lockout after repeated attempts, access logs, secure credential enrollment, or a security review. These are limitations of the documented implementation, not findings from a penetration test.

Treat the project as an electronics and web-control demonstration, not as a security-tested system for protecting a home, workplace, or other building. A simple page that accepts a string does not, by itself, address who can reach the device, how credentials are protected, or how the door behaves during power or network failures.

Construction and installation decisions to resolve

  • Electrical compatibility: Match the solenoid’s rated voltage and current to an appropriate driver and power supply. The tutorial does not provide enough electrical data to select these safely.
  • Mechanical fit: Verify that the chosen lock fits the door and frame and can operate reliably in the intended orientation and use.
  • Network availability: The described browser route depends on access to the ESP8266 over the local WiFi network. The tutorial does not specify behavior during router or network outages.
  • Safe egress and recovery: Plan how occupants can exit and how authorized users can regain access if power, WiFi, the ESP8266, or the Arduino fails. The tutorial does not document a manual override or fail-safe design.
