Verdict: The Skylight Calendar Max is a genuinely useful family command center if your household needs one large, always-visible place for school dates, sports, appointments, chores and lists. Its 27-inch screen is the reason to choose it over a smaller calendar. Sidekick is the reason to consider paying for Skylight Plus: it can turn emails, PDFs, spreadsheets and photographed schedules into calendar information, reducing manual entry. But it is an assistant, not an infallible scheduler, and the $79-per-year subscription makes the already expensive Max harder to justify.
What is the Skylight Calendar Max?
The Skylight Calendar Max is a dedicated, Wi-Fi-connected family organizer with a 27-inch touchscreen. It is designed to live on a wall in either portrait or landscape orientation, where everyone in the household can see the schedule without opening an app or borrowing someone else’s phone.

It combines synchronized calendars with color coding, tasks, chores, routines, lists, rewards, meal planning and photo-display features. Why the 27-inch screen matters
The Max’s central advantage is visibility. A phone calendar is personal; a wall calendar is communal. Several people can read the Max at once, children can see their own activities without using a parent’s device, and appointments, chores and lists can occupy the same shared space.
That can reduce the daily cycle of “What are we doing today?” and repeated reminders. It is particularly useful in an open-plan kitchen, hallway or another place the family naturally passes throughout the day.
Size alone will not organize a household. Everyone still has to add information, check the display and remove outdated events. WIRED’s independent review similarly found the large screen useful for making a busy family diary visible, while noting that the device cannot create household discipline by itself.

Sidekick: the feature that changes the proposition
Sidekick, also described in Skylight materials as Magic Import, is an AI-assisted way to get information into the family organizer. The intended workflow is straightforward:
- Forward an email or submit a PDF, spreadsheet, image or paper schedule to the Skylight service.
- Sidekick extracts relevant dates, times and other details.
- The resulting events, tasks or meal-planning information appears in the Skylight system.
- A family member reviews and corrects it before relying on the result.
Useful examples include school newsletters, sports-team schedules, appointment confirmations, event invitations, activity flyers and documents containing several dates. Skylight also describes photographing a flyer or forwarding an invitation as ways to import information. The strongest benefit is not that Sidekick “organizes everything”; it is that it reduces the friction between receiving information and entering it manually.
Where Sidekick can save time
- Extracting multiple dates from a school PDF or spreadsheet
- Turning a photographed paper notice into a calendar entry
- Adding event details from an email invitation
- Creating meal-plan ideas or converting recipes into a planning workflow
- Reducing repetitive typing for a parent who manages several calendars
Why you still need to check its work
Sidekick should be treated as assisted data entry, not a final authority. Ambiguous dates, international date formats, missing end times, time zones, recurring events with exceptions, blurry photographs, inconsistent spreadsheets and documents containing several unrelated dates can all require correction. It may also assign an event to the wrong child or create a duplicate when the same appointment already exists in a linked calendar.

A schedule can change after the original email or flyer was processed, too. Before relying on an imported event, check the date, start and end time, location, assigned person, recurrence and notes against the original source. No accuracy rate or complete supported-document matrix is established by the available product information, so claims that Sidekick interprets every document perfectly would be misleading.

What works without Skylight Plus?
Skylight says the core calendar, task manager, color coding and mobile app remain available without Plus. The company also says buyers can use the main calendar features without subscribing.
The features currently associated with Plus include:
- Sidekick or Magic Import
- Meal Planning
- Rewards
- Photo and video screensaver functions
The exact feature packaging can change, so check the current Skylight Plus page before buying. The important distinction is this: the Max can still function as a shared calendar without Plus, but the features that make it more than a large digital calendar are concentrated in the subscription.
Price and subscription value
U.S. official-store prices observed for this review were $599.99 for the Calendar Max Classic and $629.99 for the Shadow Box version. Skylight Plus was listed at $79 per year. Prices and promotions can change, so verify the current figures on the Classic product page and official shop.
At those prices, the first-year cost is approximately:

| Configuration | Hardware | One year of Plus | Approximate first-year total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar Max Classic | $599.99 | $79 | $678.99 before tax |
| Calendar Max Shadow Box | $629.99 | $79 | $708.99 before tax |
Those totals are calculated from the listed prices, not manufacturer-stated bundle prices.
Plus is easiest to justify when the household regularly receives schedules in emails, PDFs, spreadsheets or photographs; when one parent spends substantial time entering events; or when meal planning, rewards and photo screensavers will be used frequently. It is difficult to justify if you only need synchronized calendars, tasks and lists, already maintain clean digital calendars, or strongly dislike recurring fees.
In practical terms, Sidekick needs to replace a meaningful amount of repetitive work—not merely import an occasional flyer—to earn $79 every year.

The Max is wall-mount-only. It includes a wall mount and hardware and can be installed in portrait or landscape orientation. Skylight advertises setup in 10 minutes or less; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured result.
Before buying, check:
- Whether the wall and supplied hardware are suitable for the installation
- Whether a power outlet is close enough for neat cable routing
- Whether the screen will be readable at both adult and child viewing heights
- Whether windows or overhead lighting will create glare
- Whether portrait or landscape best suits your family’s calendars
- Whether the location is central without being exposed to knocks or excessive traffic
- Whether younger children can reach and use the touchscreen safely
The Max is most convincing in a permanent, shared location. It is a poor fit for renters who cannot mount it conveniently, rooms without nearby power, or households that would view it only occasionally.
Screen and touch performance
The screen is large and difficult to overlook, which is exactly the point. However, size should not be confused with premium display quality. WIRED praised the visibility and straightforward setup but criticized the screen resolution and touch response. The available product pages do not provide a complete independently verified specification table for resolution, brightness, refresh rate or touch latency, so this should not be presented as a high-end tablet display.

Calendar Max supports multiple calendar sources and color-coded family entries, making it possible to see who is doing what without opening separate accounts. Tasks, chores and lists extend it beyond appointments: a child can see a routine, a parent can add a grocery item, and the household can keep practical information alongside the day’s schedule.
Rewards can help make chores more visible and motivating, although that feature is part of Plus. The mobile app is useful for parents who are away from home or who prefer entering information on a phone, while the wall display provides the shared view that phone apps lack.
The main maintenance risk is clutter. Recurring events, old school activities, duplicate imports and low-priority tasks can make even a large screen overwhelming. A weekly cleanup—removing obsolete events, checking imported details and simplifying lists—will make the device more useful than simply adding more information to it.

The Max’s main upgrade is scale, not a fundamentally different calendar concept. The smaller models provide a more economical way to get a dedicated Skylight display, while the Max shows more information at once and is easier for several people to read together.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Model | Best fit | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar Max | Large, schedule-heavy households needing a prominent shared display | Highest cost and wall-only installation |
| Calendar 2, 15-inch | Families wanting a dedicated display at a lower price, including possible counter placement | Less information visible simultaneously |
| 10-inch Calendar | Small spaces and lower-cost entry | Least glanceable for a large family |
Official-shop prices captured for comparison were $299.99 for Calendar 2 and $169.99 for the 10-inch model, but current pricing should be checked before purchase. Choose the Max because your household needs the large shared canvas, not because it is automatically more capable in every respect.

Alternatives worth considering
A spare tablet or wall-mounted monitor
A tablet can be cheaper and more versatile, with access to calendars, browsers, streaming and other apps. Its weaknesses are practical: it may be moved, used for entertainment, left uncharged or locked behind a personal account. Calendar Max is a dedicated appliance, which is both its strength and its limitation.
A general smart display
A product such as the Amazon Echo Show 15 offers broader assistant and entertainment functions. It may suit households that want a multipurpose screen, but it is not the same as a purpose-built organizer with Skylight’s chore, list, rewards and Sidekick workflow. WIRED’s comparison described the Echo Show as having a sharper screen and broader functionality in the context of its review, although current price and availability should be checked separately.
Software-only calendars
Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and Cozi can be sufficient if the household already owns phones, tablets or a suitable wall display. They are more economical, but they do not automatically provide a persistent, child-facing appliance or Skylight’s import workflow.

Calendar Max requires Wi-Fi and access to synchronized calendar accounts. Sidekick may process information from emails, PDFs, images and other submitted material. That can include school schedules, medical appointments, travel details and other sensitive family information. Review Skylight’s current privacy policy and account-security documentation before sending such material, and avoid assuming specific retention, encryption or AI-training practices unless the current policy states them clearly.
Also plan for ordinary service failures: a calendar sync may be delayed, a submitted document may need correction, or a subscription change may affect premium features. Confirm exactly what remains available if Plus ends rather than assuming every premium function simply becomes read-only.
Who should buy the Skylight Calendar Max?
Buy it if:
- Your family needs one highly visible schedule in a shared location.
- Several people contribute events, chores and tasks.
- Children benefit from seeing routines and responsibilities directly.
- You receive a steady stream of school, sports or activity information in inconsistent formats.
- Sidekick would replace frequent manual data entry.
- You accept the $79 annual Plus cost.
- You have a suitable wall, power outlet and low-glare viewing position.
Skip it if:
- Your existing phone and calendar workflow already works well.
- You want a general-purpose tablet, entertainment screen or voice assistant.
- You do not want any subscription.
- You lack a practical wall location.
- Only one person will use or view the display.
- A spare tablet or monitor would provide enough visibility.
- You expect Sidekick to interpret every document without checking it.
Final verdict
The Skylight Calendar Max succeeds because it turns family logistics into a physical, shared presence. The 27-inch display is genuinely more useful than a phone when several people need to see appointments, chores, lists and routines at once. Sidekick adds real value when your household regularly receives schedules as emails, PDFs, spreadsheets or paper notices.
But this is an expensive dedicated appliance, and the most distinctive features require Plus. The best case is a large, busy family that will use the display daily and send Sidekick enough information to eliminate substantial manual entry. The weakest case is a subscription-averse buyer who only wants a shared calendar or expects a multipurpose smart display.
