Should Your Workbench Vise Go on the Left or Right?

A face vise usually goes at the front left for right-handed planing and front right for left-handed planing—but your workflow and bench layout should decide the final position.

For a woodworking face vise, a right-handed woodworker will usually want it at the front-left corner; a left-handed woodworker will usually want it at the front-right. That traditional placement supports the work while you hand-plane toward the vise. It is a useful starting point, not a rule: place the vise where it best suits your work and bench.

Why handedness affects face-vise placement

Many right-handed woodworkers plane from right to left, so a vise at the bench’s front-left corner lets the work be planed toward the vise. Left-handed woodworkers commonly mirror that setup, placing the face vise at the front-right. The aim is to support the stock during the planing stroke, rather than to follow a universal bench standard. WOOD Magazine discusses the traditional left-front placement; Highland Woodworking describes the front edge as a general-purpose location.

Choose based on the work you do

If you hand-plane long boards

Start with the handedness-based arrangement: front-left for a right-handed user, front-right for a left-handed user. Check your own stance and planing direction before committing, because the useful position is the one that supports the work along your actual stroke.

If you mostly saw

Think about where the keeper piece and offcut will sit, and whether the vise position leaves the saw a clear path. WOOD Magazine notes that a left-side vise can hold the keeper while leaving a useful arrangement for the offcut, but also says the vise can be mounted where it suits the user. See its discussion of vise placement and sawing.

If you carve or clamp wide, flat work

An end position may suit some carving and wide-panel setups better than a front-edge face vise. Highland Woodworking identifies those as uses for an end position, while describing the front edge as a good general-purpose location. Consider the shape and orientation of your work before deciding. Read Highland Woodworking’s placement guidance.

Face vise versus tail or end vise

These vises serve different workholding jobs. A front face vise is commonly used to hold a board vertically; a tail or end vise is commonly paired with bench dogs to hold a long board flat. On a traditional right-handed bench, the end vise is often at the right end. A two-vise bench can therefore support both vertical board work and long stock held flat, but it is not necessary to install both if your work does not call for them. Woodcraft explains the different roles of front and end vises.

Check the bench before drilling

Once you have chosen a side, verify the actual hardware fits the bench and moves freely. A position that suits your workflow can still conflict with the bench structure or the vise’s footprint.

  • Check that the vise body clears the legs and apron.
  • Move the handle through its full range and confirm it will not hit an obstruction.
  • Account for jaw liners, which may extend beyond the vise hardware and affect where the jaws can sit.
  • If using an end vise with bench dogs, check the dog-hole layout and clearance at the bench end.

These checks matter before drilling mounting holes: Highland Woodworking covers placement considerations, and Woodcraft discusses vise installation and workholding.

A practical decision rule

  1. Identify your most common task: hand-planing, sawing, carving, or holding long stock flat.
  2. For frequent hand-planing, choose the front corner that lets you plane toward the vise: usually left for right-handed users and right for left-handed users.
  3. For a different primary task, position the vise to support that workflow and leave room for the work, offcut, and tool movement.
  4. Before drilling, check the vise body, handle, legs, apron, jaw liners, and—if applicable—bench-dog layout.
