Usually, no: leave tomato flowers on the plant during the growing season because they can develop into fruit. The main exception is late in the season, when removing new flowers about four weeks before your area’s expected first fall frost can help the tomatoes already on the vine ripen.
Why you should usually leave tomato flowers alone
Each flower cluster is a potential crop. Removing it during the normal growing season means removing the chance for that cluster to set fruit. A 2026 Ask Extension response advises gardeners to allow blooms so plants can begin fruiting and produce a harvest.
Flower removal is not the same as sucker pruning. A flower cluster can become tomatoes; a sucker is a leafy side shoot growing where a leaf stem meets the main stem.
When removing flowers can make sense
As the first fall frost approaches
About four weeks before the expected first fall frost, Iowa State University Extension recommends removing new flowers as one way to direct the plant toward ripening fruit that has already set. Use your local expected frost date rather than a fixed calendar date; timing varies by location and season.

During ordinary active growth
Before that late-season window, leave the flowers. Routine pinching is not needed to manage the plant, and it removes potential fruit rather than helping existing tomatoes mature.
Flowers are different from suckers
To identify a sucker, look at the junction between a leaf stem and the main stem. A small shoot emerging from that leaf axil is a sucker. A flower cluster is a separate structure and should not be pinched off just because advice recommends pruning suckers.

Whether to prune suckers depends partly on tomato growth habit and how you want to manage the plant:
| Tomato type | Typical growth and pruning approach |
|---|---|
| Determinate | Grows to a more limited size and sets a finite crop. Keep pruning minimal; removing shoots above the first flower cluster can remove potential fruit-bearing growth. |
| Indeterminate | Continues producing stems, flowers, and fruit as it grows. Selective sucker removal is optional and may help with airflow or plant management, depending on support and growing goals. |
Check the seed packet or plant tag if you do not know which type you have; University of Vermont Extension says those sources should identify the growth habit. The distinction affects sucker management, not whether flowers normally need to be removed.

How to remove suckers without removing flowers
- Find the leaf axil, where a leaf stem joins the main stem, and identify the small side shoot growing there.
- On a determinate plant, avoid broad pruning. Iowa State Extension advises removing suckers up to the first flower cluster; removing more beyond that point does not increase yield.
- On an indeterminate plant, remove selected suckers only if you want to manage the vine’s shape, airflow, or support. Small suckers can be snapped off by hand; sharp pruners can be used for larger ones.
These steps apply to sucker shoots, not flower clusters. Topping a vine, removing leaves, and tying or supporting stems are separate plant-care tasks.

What to do if you are unsure
- If it is a flower cluster and frost is not approaching, leave it.
- If it is a sucker, first identify whether the plant is determinate or indeterminate, then decide whether pruning fits your management goals.
- If autumn frost is approaching, use the local expected first-frost date to judge when the late-season flower-removal window begins.
