You do not need to remove them to grow potatoes, and whether pinching improves yield in a home garden is uncertain. Some extension guidance recommends it, while other experts say it is unlikely to help. If you choose to try it, pinch off only the flowers—not the stems or foliage.
Does pinching potato flowers increase the harvest?
There is no established, dependable yield benefit for ordinary home-garden conditions. The extension advice differs: Oregon State’s Ask Extension response says measurable effects appear highly dependent on environmental conditions and that removing flowers will not harm tuber production; Alaska Extension advises leaving them intact because removal is unlikely to improve or increase yield. By contrast, the University of California Statewide IPM Program recommends pinching flowers to favor tuber growth, but does not give a yield estimate or trial details for that recommendation.
A small experiment offers one limited data point, not a general promise. A 2002 paper reported a 1998 trial at Alemaya University in Ethiopia with four determinate potato cultivars. In that experiment, removing flowers increased total tuber yield by 2.2% compared with plants allowed to fruit; removing both flowers and fruits increased yield by 17%. Those results apply to the trial’s cultivars and conditions, and should not be assumed for a different variety or home garden.
- Leave flowers: the simplest choice, and no source establishes that removal is necessary.
- Pinch flowers: a reasonable optional experiment if you want to follow UC IPM’s advice; the evidence does not establish a reliable yield gain for your garden.
Oregon Extension expert Patricia Patterson wrote that removing flowers would not harm tuber production. That makes trying it low-risk, but it does not show that pinching will increase your harvest. Read the Oregon Extension response. Alaska Extension expert Meriam Karlsson recommends leaving flowers intact: read the Alaska Extension response. UC’s practical recommendation is on its potato cultural tips page.

How to remove flowers without cutting back the plant
If you decide to pinch, remove the flower cluster by hand. Do not treat flower removal as a signal to prune the rest of the plant. Flowers are reproductive growth; the leafy tops support the plant as tubers develop.
- Find the flower cluster on the plant.
- Pinch or snap off the cluster gently, without breaking the main stem.
- Leave the stems and foliage in place to continue growing.
Pinching flowers is different from cutting off potato tops. Michigan Extension advises against pruning the plant and recommends waiting for top growth to die back naturally for the largest tubers. See its guidance on potato top growth.

Do flowers tell you when potatoes are ready to harvest?
No. Flowering is not a precise harvest clock: potato plants may not bloom, and bloom timing alone does not tell you how large the tubers are. Cool, wet early-summer weather is one condition associated with blooming, but the flowers and fruit do not affect the plant much, according to an Ask Extension response.
You can dig new potatoes before the plant is fully mature, but they will be smaller than potatoes left to grow. For the largest tubers, allow the tops to die back naturally before harvesting. The University of Florida’s home-garden guide describes tuber development as initiation, bulking, and maturation, and discusses top removal as a later vine-killing step—not as flower pinching. Read the Florida guide to growing potatoes.
