Should You Leave Earlier or Choose a Longer Route During Road Construction?

Usually, leave earlier unless a verified detour is clearly faster and reliable. Road construction can make the signed route’s normal travel time meaningless, so compare current, departure-time estimates for the work-zone route and a suitable alternate. Take the longer route when it offers a credible reduction in delay or uncertainty—not merely because it adds distance.

If no detour is officially supported, open, and materially better, stay on the designated route, allow extra time, and follow every temporary control. There is no universal number of minutes that works for every project, road, or departure time.

The short answer: compare time and reliability, not mileage

A construction route can be slower even when the work itself is not active. Lanes may be narrowed or closed, traffic shifted across the roadway, shoulders removed from use, and speed limits reduced. North Carolina DOT notes that these conditions can remain in place when workers are absent, so an ordinary map estimate is not a dependable forecast while a work zone is operating.

Before leaving, check the current information from the road authority responsible for the route. Compare the expected total travel time at your planned departure for:

  • the signed route through the work zone;
  • an officially identified detour; and
  • another alternate that is open, suitable for your vehicle, and able to handle the traffic.

Choose the detour when its current estimate is meaningfully better and its conditions are credible. Choose an earlier departure when the detour only adds driving time, has uncertain capacity, or is not recommended. If the estimates are close, reliability and the consequence of arriving late should decide the choice.

Why road-work estimates are unusually uncertain

Construction changes more than speed. A project can remove a lane, move traffic into a temporary alignment, close a shoulder, add a merge, or create a queue that reaches an upstream interchange. A crash, a delivery vehicle, a flagging operation, or a change in the work phase can then add delay that a normal route planner did not anticipate.

Washington State Department of Transportation explains that predicting the length of a potential backup is difficult. Agencies therefore use changeable signs at route decision points to help drivers choose before they enter the queue. Treat a live estimate as a forecast with uncertainty, not a guarantee.

Peak periods deserve special caution. Caltrans advises, “Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.” South Carolina’s Department of Public Safety gives the practical instruction: “Expect delays, plan for them, and leave earlier to reach your destination.” Those statements are safety guidance, not a promise of a particular delay or a standard time buffer.

The six factors that should decide your route

Factor What to check How it affects the decision
Current travel time Expected door-to-destination time for your planned departure Compare the full trip, not just the construction segment.
Reliability Whether the work-zone queue is growing, variable, or difficult to predict A slightly longer but stable route may beat a short route with a large delay risk.
Added distance and fuel Extra miles, driving time, and operating cost A detour has a real cost; it is not automatically an improvement.
Detour status Whether the authority recommends it and confirms it is open An unofficial shortcut may be unsuitable or already overloaded.
Capacity and vehicle fit Road width, restrictions, grades, weather exposure, and traffic load The shortest alternate by distance can fail when many drivers use it.
Cost of lateness Appointment, shift, school, medical, delivery, or connection deadline High consequences justify a larger reliability margin or an earlier departure.

How to compare a work-zone route with a longer detour

1. Start with the responsible authority’s live notice

Look for closure information, lane arrangements, queue or delay notices, project updates, and the agency’s recommended detour. Official information can warn you early enough to leave sooner or choose another route. Check the notice for its date, direction of travel, hours of operation, vehicle restrictions, and any statement that an alternate is not recommended.

Conditions are local and volatile. A notice for one direction, weekend, or construction phase does not automatically describe the next trip. Recheck close to departure, and recheck during a long journey if the route decision point has not yet been reached.

2. Compare expected total time at your departure time

Use the time for the actual planned departure, rather than comparing route lengths. A detour that looks attractive at midday can be worse during a school-run or commuter peak. Conversely, a queue that is severe now may have cleared by the time you leave.

Include the time to reach the decision point, the construction segment or alternate roads, and the final approach to your destination. Do not compare only the number of miles added by the detour.

3. Test whether the detour can absorb extra traffic

Check whether the alternate is intended to carry diverted vehicles. Look for narrow sections, low-capacity intersections, weight or height limits, seasonal conditions, and local access needs. An alternate can be open yet still be a poor choice for a large traffic surge.

New York State Department of Transportation identifies avoiding work-zone congestion and conflicts as detour advantages, but also lists longer driving time, higher user costs, and lower service on the detour as disadvantages. The trade-off must be evaluated for the specific project.

4. Add uncertainty, not an invented universal buffer

No official source in the available guidance establishes a general “add 20 minutes” or “add 30 minutes” rule. Instead, use the authority’s current estimate and its warning about queue uncertainty. If the work-zone estimate is changing rapidly or the queue has no dependable end point, treat that volatility as a reason to leave earlier or select a verified alternate.

5. Account for the consequence of being late

For a flexible trip, a modestly longer route may be acceptable if it avoids stressful stop-and-go traffic. For a flight connection, medical appointment, work shift, or scheduled delivery, reliability matters more than the shortest nominal time. Build your decision around the time you must arrive, not the time you hope the road will take.

When leaving earlier is the better choice

  • The authority has not recommended an alternate, or the alternate’s condition and capacity are unclear.
  • The detour adds driving time without a materially better current estimate.
  • The project notice warns that the queue is variable but gives no dependable alternate.
  • Your vehicle, load, or weather conditions make the alternate unsuitable.
  • You can depart before the expected peak and have no reason to risk an unfamiliar road.

Leaving earlier does not mean ignoring a closure. If the route is closed or signs direct traffic elsewhere, follow the designated arrangement. It means giving yourself time for the delay that the authority has warned you to expect.

When a longer route is worth taking

  • The signed route has a long or unreliable queue at your departure time.
  • An official notice identifies a detour that is open and appropriate for the traffic.
  • The alternate’s current total time is materially lower after its extra miles are included.
  • The detour avoids the work-zone bottleneck rather than merely shifting the queue to a nearby junction.
  • Arriving on time is important enough that reduced uncertainty outweighs fuel, mileage, and driving cost.

Use the authority’s recommendation as a strong signal. In a March 4, 2026 notice about the Vantage Bridge project, WSDOT described one lane in each direction and warned that delays would be longer during high-volume periods. It encouraged alternate routes but specifically said Vantage Highway was not a recommended detour because its capacity was limited. That example shows why “longer” and “open” are not sufficient tests by themselves; the alternate must be able to carry the diverted traffic.

A practical departure-time procedure

  1. Set your required arrival time. Include any check-in, loading, parking, or walking time that occurs after driving.
  2. Check the current road-authority notice. Confirm the construction phase, direction, lane pattern, closure status, expected delay, and recommended detour.
  3. Record the departure-time estimate for the signed route. Note whether the agency describes the queue as uncertain or likely to worsen during the peak.
  4. Record the full estimate for each viable alternate. Include the approach and destination ends, not only the added detour miles.
  5. Reject unsuitable alternates. Remove roads with restrictions, poor capacity, unsafe conditions, or no confirmation that they are open.
  6. Choose by total time plus reliability. Take the detour when the credible time saving and lower uncertainty justify its added distance. Otherwise, use the signed route and leave earlier.
  7. Save a fallback. If conditions can change before you reach the decision point, know where the authority directs traffic and where a safe, legal route change is possible.

What to do once you reach the work zone

Agency signs and traffic controls take precedence over a route preference made before departure. The UK Department for Transport’s Highway Code rule 288 says, “Observe all signs – they are there for your safety and the safety of road workers.” That is UK guidance; the exact legal rules differ by jurisdiction, but the safety principle is broadly applicable.

  • Reduce speed to the posted temporary limit and expect sudden changes in alignment.
  • Select the required lane in good time rather than forcing a last-second merge.
  • Follow flaggers, police, arrow boards, cones, and temporary signals.
  • Do not change lanes to overtake a queue where signs or markings prohibit it. Rule 288 specifically tells UK drivers not to change lanes to overtake queued traffic.
  • Leave space for vehicles entering from work areas and for emergency responders.
  • Do not use a shoulder, closed lane, or emergency access as a shortcut.

If the live situation contradicts an earlier estimate, do not make a sudden turn or reverse direction inside the work zone. Continue to a legal decision point and follow the current signs.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by distance alone

A few extra miles do not reveal intersection delays, a low-capacity bridge, or a queue at the detour’s end. Compare total travel time and suitability instead.

Trusting a stale app estimate

Navigation data can lag a lane closure or a changed work phase. Check the road authority’s notice and variable signs, especially before a trip during a peak period.

Assuming an “open” road is a recommended detour

Open status says that vehicles may be able to use a road; it does not prove that the road can handle diverted traffic. Look for the authority’s capacity or recommendation warning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Making the decision after entering the queue

Last-second lane changes create risk and may violate temporary markings. Decide before the work zone when possible, then follow the signed route.

Using a universal time allowance

Project conditions, direction, weather, and departure time differ too much for one number to be reliable. Use current estimates and the uncertainty described by the agency.

Limits of this guidance

The sources behind this advice combine US and UK agency guidance. They are not a single jurisdiction’s legal advice. Temporary speed limits, lane rules, permitted turns, and enforcement depend on the road you are using; local signs and instructions control.

Project schedules, closures, detour suitability, and live travel times can change between planning and departure. Verify the responsible road authority’s current information, allow time for uncertainty, and obey every temporary control. The right answer is therefore conditional: take a longer route only when current evidence shows it is both suitable and more dependable; otherwise leave earlier and use the designated route.
