Should You Leave a Water Heater On 24/7 or Switch It Off Between Uses?

Storage heaters are generally best left in their intended mode for everyday use; consider switching off for absences over a week. Tankless heaters heat on demand.

For a storage-tank water heater, use its normal manufacturer-recommended settings for everyday use; the available official guidance does not establish that switching it off between ordinary uses is universally cheaper. For a trip lasting more than a week, Australian Government household guidance recommends turning off a storage hot-water system. A tankless heater works differently: it heats water when a tap draws it, rather than keeping a tank hot.

First identify what kind of water heater you have

The answer depends on whether the appliance stores hot water or heats it as water flows. The U.S. Department of Energy distinguishes storage heaters, which maintain water at a thermostat setting, from instantaneous heaters. With a tankless unit, opening a hot-water tap triggers heating; leaving the unit powered is not the same as continuously heating a full tank. The Department of Energy explains the difference between storage and tankless systems, and ENERGY STAR describes how whole-home gas tankless heaters operate.

What to do in common situations

Situation Practical approach Important qualification
Storage tank, normal daily routine Keep the thermostat and controls in the manufacturer’s intended operating mode. The sources do not provide a universal cost comparison proving that daily manual shutoffs save money.
Storage tank, away for more than a week Consider switching the system off, as Australian Government household advice recommends. Allow time for reheating before you need hot water again.
Heat-pump storage heater, extended absence Check the manual for a vacation or absence mode. Some models can let the water cool and restore the prior setting before your return; behavior and timing vary by model.
Gas tankless heater Use the appliance according to its manual; routine daily switching is not equivalent to switching off a storage tank. It heats in response to water flow and does not maintain a full tank at temperature.
Electric storage heater on a time-of-use tariff Ask whether approved off-peak scheduling suits your tariff and household demand. Australian Government guidance notes this can shift costs to a cheaper period, but does not reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
Small electric point-of-use heater Check whether the unit is designed for timer control. UK government guidance discusses timer-controlled switches for point-of-use heaters in school and further-education estates; this is not a blanket home recommendation.

For everyday use, daily power-cycling is not a universal saving

A storage heater uses energy to maintain stored water at its thermostat setting. Whether turning it off for a short gap saves money depends on the appliance, how long it is off, the energy tariff, how much hot water the household uses, and how quickly the system must reheat. The official guidance available for this question does not establish a universal savings amount or show that switching off between ordinary uses is cheaper in every home. Use the heater’s intended controls rather than assuming that frequent manual shutoffs will reduce your bill.

For a longer absence, consider a shutdown or vacation setting

Storage systems

The Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water advises that turning off a storage hot-water system saves energy and money when you are away for more than a week. The guidance is specific to an extended absence, not a recommendation to switch the heater off every day. Check the appliance instructions for the correct shutdown procedure, and plan for the tank to reheat before you rely on it when you return. Read the Australian Government’s household energy-saving advice.

Heat-pump water heaters

Some heat-pump models offer a vacation mode that allows stored water to cool during an extended absence and restores the previous mode ahead of your return. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program describes this feature, but its availability and operation depend on the model. Check the manual for how to activate it and how much recovery time to allow. See the Department of Energy’s residential water-heater operating guidance.

Off-peak scheduling is different from switching the heater off

If you have an electric storage heater and a time-of-use tariff, an approved control may let it heat during a lower-cost off-peak period. This can reduce the price paid for electricity if the tariff and household schedule make the arrangement suitable. It does not, according to Australian Government guidance, reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Confirm that your tariff, heater controls, and expected hot-water demand are compatible before changing the schedule. The Australian Government’s hot-water guidance covers off-peak operation.

Keep water temperature, hygiene, and scald protection in view

Do not change a heater’s temperature solely to make a switching routine seem more efficient. Temperature advice depends on the appliance, local requirements, and household circumstances. CDC home guidance says settings of 130–140°F can kill germs such as Legionella, while increasing burn risk; it notes that thermostatic mixing valves can reduce scald risk when the heater is set above 120°F. CDC building-system guidance separately recommends storing hot water above 140°F and maintaining circulating water above 120°F as part of a water-management program. Those building-system recommendations are not a substitute for home-appliance advice. Follow the heater manual and applicable local guidance, and seek qualified advice if a household member has particular health or scald-risk needs.

Why a timer is not a universal answer

A timer-controlled switch may be appropriate for a compatible small electric point-of-use heater, but that narrow example should not be generalized to every water heater. UK government guidance discusses timers for point-of-use heaters in school and further-education estates. For a home installation, verify the heater’s rating, manufacturer instructions, and local electrical requirements before using a timer or changing controls. The UK government’s lighting and heating guidance describes that estate-specific context.
